I'm talking about Steve Hockensmith's - Holmes on the Range Mysteries, featuring two novellas: 'Black List, White Death!' The Amlingmeyer brothers are a pair of cowpokes who solve crimes in the Wild West, inspired by the stories of Sherlock Holmes. They're hilarious, clever, and full of surprises. Let me tell you more about their adventures.
In 'Black List', they head to the Arizona Territory to track down a secret list of names that a wealthy rancher wanted dead. He hired a killer to eliminate his competition, but the killer got caught and sent to jail. Years later, he's out, returns to the area, and then turns up dead. On a twist of things, the killer's lawyer hires the Amlingmeyer brothers to find the list. But they're not the only ones after it...
In 'White Death,' they go undercover at a tuberculosis sanitarium, where someone is murdering the patients. Big Red pretends to be a new clerk, while Old Red pretends to be sick. The Amlingmeyer brothers, Old Red & Big Red, are at it again. They are with the A.A. Western Detective Agency. They always seem to solve the cases sometimes just bumbling through by Big Red. Old Red is the one with the brain power. The first story does not fare well for the client as Old Red outsmarted him. But I will not give any spoilers here. The second story is most different that any other mystery or western story I have ever read. Ity will leave you wondering who done it up until the very end.

Absolute delight to have this to read! And choosing to read it to my blind husband made it even better. Nothing quite like sharing a laugh together--and there were plenty in these two stories. Steve does have a way with words and puts words in his characters' mouths that always stay true to their personalities. I'd hire Old Red and Big Red in a minute if I needed a private detective, but even more certainly, I'll read another Steve Hockensmith book or short story.

The book features two novellas featuring cowboy detectives Old Red and Big Red. Up first, the two travel to the Arizona territory to try to find a list of names related to a murder that happened years before. Then, they go undercover at a tuberculosis sanitarium in Colorado where patients have died of unnatural causes. In between, we get a short story involving Big Red’s first solo case in which a package pickup goes wrong.
When you combine the three stories, you get a full-length book. And all three stories are filled with fun. I laughed multiple times while reading. But they are solid mysteries, and I’m always amazed at how Old Red pieces things together. As always, the brothers’ interactions are fun, and I really do enjoy spending time with them as they navigate cases in the 1890’s.
