… and her mom, Laura Givens is on a mission to give her daughter the best life possible. Despite Mallory’s autism, anxiety, and depression. After pushing her denial and fears aside, Laura is determined to get Mallory the help she needs and won’t let anything, or anyone, stand in her way. Not even her husband, Scott, who is fiercely loyal. He loves his family with his whole heart and will protect them at any cost. So why does his daughter having a disability bother him so much? And why is he so against his wife seeking answers?
Ever since she was a little girl, Mallory has wanted to feel “normal.” It’s difficult growing up, never wanting to be touched or dealing with the unique challenges that anxiety and depression throw at you. Suffocated by her parents’ care and concern, Mallory struggles to fit in with the neurotypical world around her.
Will Laura and Scott come together as they tackle family indifference, unhelpful teachers, teenage angst, and first love to give Mallory the life she deserves? Can Mallory come to terms with her autism and mental illness on her personal journey of self-discovery? Will she ever Become Mallory?
It is tacky to leave a review on your own book? Possibly, but I don't care! I've read this book hundreds of times throughout the course of it's life, and I will love it till my dying days.
I truly hope Mallory touches your heart the same way she touched mine. Bringing these characters to life was such a treat! I want it to melt your heart and cause tears to flow (and yes, I realize a desire to make people to cry is strange. I own it). If you are neurdivergent or suffer from mental illness, I want you to read this and feel loved, seen, and heard. I hope you see yourself in these pages and feel validated. But mostly, I just want you to feel. The subject matter is heavy at times, but I don't want it to overshadow the joy it contains.
Enjoy it, get lost in it, and always remember, you are worthy!
I’ll start by telling you I am not one to typically pick up this genre. But as my IG username would suggest, I do try to read a bit of everything. And for Elaine, I will venture into any world she dreams up.
This book takes place over YEARS of one families life and let me tell you, it is a journey you won’t soon forget. I truly loved reading from so many characters perspectives, it really made the story complete and gave me the best closure I could ask for.
Dearest Elaine, if you don’t write a book giving me Johnnys story, I will riot.
Many thanks to the author for allowing me to beta read & sending me a finished copy!
Let’s take a moment to appreciate the cover of “Becoming Mallory” 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 It’s absolutely stunning! I loved the set up of this book, how it starts off with a teenage Mallory and then the next chapter goes into how her mom found out she was pregnant and so on. There are also multiple POVs throughout this book and time jumps. This is Elaine’s first novel but I knew she would make me love the characters, which I did right from the get go. I feel like the chapters leading up to when she met Caleb were a little slow for me but mostly because I’m a romance girl and I KNEW a boy was about to enter the story. Caleb is absolutely the sweetest boy ever! The way he is getting to know Mallory and doesn’t make her feel “different” just warmed my heart. I don’t want to say too much because you need to experience it for yourself, just know their relationship is cuuuuute. The growth that Mallory had throughout this whole book was super inspiring. Even though she had her struggles she still pulled through and came out better than before. When you struggle with a mental illness you know you have good days and bad and seeing that within this story made me relate to it so much more. This book read so much like a memoir and was super relatable especially when it came to the parents with their children. We know all parents raise their children differently and see that on paper was very eye opening. Being a parent is hard and being a parent to a child with autism/mental Illness is even harder. Show some grace and always remember “you are worthy”. Huge Thank You to Elaine for sending me the ARC of her first book. I feel honored to of read it before release day. I’m also happy to announce she brought me out of my reading slump!!!
This truly was a love letter to anyone struggling, that you are enough, don’t listen to the doubts you have, be firm in your boundaries and advocate for yourself and who you are - which is not defined by one or multiple diagnosis’ but by how you work along side them to find your flow of life.
This made me laugh, it made my eyes well up, and it did make me cry. A must read for, really anyone and everyone because we all struggle with something but we don’t have to do it alone.
Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for this ARC🖤
I am not joking when I say this book made me break down several times.
The main character is a girl named Mallory, who has autism, depression, and anxiety.
The book starts with a little prologue by her, and then goes into her parent's POV before she was born, leading through her lifetime. I loved the way the author wrote this book, the multi-POV, heart-wrenching plot twists, and more. I was so absorbed in the story that I couldn't go to bed until I finished it, and I sat up till 5 in the morning thinking about it. I love that Mallory didn't keep struggling because she found her thing, and she found the one who would support her through it all. This was a beautiful book, I adore it and will be re-reading it, maybe updating this review with more thoughts.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Wow!!! I have zero words to describe my feelings for this book!! - BECOMING MALLORY IS MY SOUL BOOK - … if there even is such a thing.
This book has changed my life. During the last 6 months, autism has come up in my life more times than I would like. With my own kids, my own suspicions, countless evenings spent researching, and now this BEAUTIFUL book!
This book has made me realize that it’s all going to be okay. Even if I ever find such a diagnosis in my life… it’s all going to be okay!
I would firstly like to thank the Author, Elaine Evans, for letting me read your book. I cannot in words describe how much joy it has given me! You’re writing is heartwarming and so inspiring!
The characters were amazing! INCREDIBLE!! I felt such enormous love for each one of them and their growth and development during the book was so enjoyable and provided me with so much happiness and absolute euphoria.
The story was raw and real and so absolutely fulfilling. I was completely absorbed in every page and every situation. I loved all the different points of views and that it was so relatable and made me feel like I was an actual part of their family and lives and it touched literally every fiber of my being!
I loved the playlist as well, SO MUCH!! It gave me so many feelings of attachment and need for this family to be okay!!
Mallory and Caleb, their love story, their trials and challenges and ultimately their everlasting love together gave me so much peace and overwhelming joy!!
This book is FANTASTIC!!! This will forever stay with me and has without a doubt become my Roman Empire!!

I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review, thanks for sharing! This isn’t the genre I normally read but it was SUCH a sweet story. I like how it followed Mallory throughout her life and was written from multiple points of view. I think it was obvious that the author had knowledge and experience with autism and neurodivergence and I learned a lot from this book. There were definitely some parts that could have been cut back or further developed, but I think this book ultimately did its job of depicting the struggle of a young woman with autism and mental illness, as well as the beauty that can come from it.
I read this as an ARC provided by Elaine! This novel… is EVERYTHING!! I loved the emotion, the concern, the happiness, and the pure joy of a rollercoaster this novel took me on. Elaine has something special in this story and I look forward to more of her works! This novel would be great for anyone to read not only those who know someone with autism. This novel shows how anything is possible and that autism is not the end all be all.
This book was INCREDIBLE! The autism representation was wonderful. I am on the autism spectrum and it’s wonderful to see a character with autism that is verbal as many think of the nonverbal cases which yes there are some, but autism is a spectrum. You can definitely tell this author has Had personal experience with autism by the way the book is written. It seems more than just research, and in the acknowledgments it mentions that she does have a child named Samantha with autism. I am happy to hear that the camelot center is a real place. It sounds fantastic. I think the resources left are good. I love that the book covers such a large part of Mallory’s life and does so from multiple perspectives. It’s great that it mentions mental health struggles because that is something that many on the spectrum including myself struggle from (at the very least anxiety and depression). I kept on wanting to read more and only took Breaks to squeeze in a couple other books In between. Thanks to the author and publisher for the advanced readers copy . My review Is still my own.
I looooved Becoming Mallory! I rarely cry at books or movies, but this one made me cry. The building and structure of the story were amazing - it hooks you up from the opening scene and leads you throughout the way, holding your hand. I was so proud of Mallory at the end! I really loved how different POVs were used to describe both how Mallory was feeling and how her family was experiencing everything that was happening to and with her, as well as their own feelings. Definitely in my Top 5 books of the year. Looking forward to more stories from Elaine Evans!
Omg I am in love with this book I couldn't put it down. This book had me happy, sad it played on every emotion going and I love mallory despite every she went through she never gave up and this book shows even if you have a mental illness(es) and special needs you can shine bright and show the world your are like everyone else and can be like everyone else

I have a beautiful 3yr old granddaughter on the spectrum. Being so young and mostly non-verbal, it’s not easy to understand what goes on inside that little girls mind. This book was an absolute necessity for me.
Elaine did a wonderful job connecting all of the POVs and timeline into a heartfelt story. I feel like, for this type of story, it’s important to understand how every member of the family feels. But, most of all, capturing Mallory’s thoughts and feelings opened my eyes to things that may occur in our own situation.
Even without having autism in our family, this book would still receive 5 stars from me because it was a well written, smooth, and touches all of the emotions. Thank you, Elaine, for allowing me to be an arc reader for you and for creating this amazing book.
I was given an ebook copy of this book to read and review, I do not earn anything from my review, it is just my honest opinion.
This was such a moving story! The various points of view made this family's struggles and victories so much more 3D than if it had just been from one POV. Having personal experience with children on the spectrum in my own family, this story just touched my heart deeply! I also want to say I absolutely loved how the parents ultimately were there for each other and Mallory. I also thought it beautiful how they took care to make time for their son, Jake, in it all as well. It was all around just a wonderful story of unconditional love and perseverance through the challenges that autism brings with it. The writing was also beautifully done! I highly recommend this book! I'd give it inifinity stars if I could!
A Story that follows multiple point of views of a fictional character. Mallory. Who is on the autism spectrum and has several other mental disorders . It follows her struggles to triumphs in her life. How her family doesn’t give up and put unimaginable amounts of effort into helping her change her life.
A coming of age - with a glimpse inside a young autistic girl world. Insightful and honest, that let us see the inside dealings on how complicated life is every day for someone who’s autistic. From how her parents deal with school, to high school relationships and her struggles in finding herself. A rollercoaster of emotions. That leaves you wanting more.
I love the hard truths in this book regarding life being atypical. Definitely shows the ups and downs of life and how each family member deals with what happens within the family. Mallory is so special and overcomes so much with the support of her mom and family. I love the different viewpoints shown in this book and love the ability to show raw emotion. I couldn’t put it down until it was finished!!
A big thanks to Elaine Evan’s for sharing her insights of the complexities of autism. The spectrum of autism is not limited to the individual but also includes their family and friends. As a mother of two children diagnosed as PDD-NOS and Asperger’s we have travelled the same road as Becoming Mallory. Each scene gave me a glimpse back in time…20 years ago. As a mother I had the same questions, concerns and worries from the onset of diagnosis to the ever growing therapies.
This story seems to fit a three part narrative with Mallory as the FMC. Her early years to high school first crush, then recovery years from a mental episode, and her growing into a woman surrounded by love.
Please note there is on page self harm and hospitalization. Evan’s did not shy away from showing Mallory struggle with depression, anxiety and self doubt. This is the reality of autism. What leaves me feeling hope is that Mallory’s family rallied and did not give up. She was able to recover and with talk therapy, equine therapy and painting she found a purpose. Her high school boyfriend Caleb wraps up this second chance love story into an HEA.
Read this if you would like insight on families who have experienced autism, mental health illnesses and suicidal ideation.
Congratulations to Elaine Evan on crafting a story that my children can be seen, heard and respected.
🌻 I RECEIVED THIS BOOK AS AN ARC 🌻 My review is my my own and I was not paid for my opinions.
I thought this book was absolutely beautiful. The highs and lows innate to living a human existence is all but guaranteed for us all, but all of these things are compounded when neurodivergence and mental health issues are a part of the package. This book shows the full breadth of the spectrum of feelings, emotions and experiences one has when they have lived experience. It was written in a really raw and authentic way to share the impact that it has on the person themselves, but also on their nearest and dearest. Sometimes shifts between time and various characters between chapters can end up clunky or confusing, but I think it really added so much in this case.
This book really hit the mark for me, and not just because there were so many similarities between my own story and Mallory’s. While there were really vivid depictions of the sorrow that can come from living or knowing someone battling these things, there is also such light at the other side. When a person can feel that low, that sad, that done, they are also capable of feeling so high, happy and joyful. My own low spots felt so permanent and all encompassing when I was young, and I wished so much for a neutral way of being, but now I see the value in feeling the full breath of emotion.
This story hit so close to home (literally, they live in Ohio, too!) I don't think that I have ever related more to a book. Mallory is my daughter. Seriously, I couldn't believe how Elaine Evans hit the nail on the head when writing the emotions, feelings, and characteristics of a child with autism, anxiety, and depression. My daughter is 12 and has also been diagnosed with severe anxiety, depression, and high functioning autism. I felt like I could have written the chapters that were from Mallory's mother's point of view. Her concern, worry, fear, love, and devotion to/for her daughter are all things that I have felt for mine; the fearce feelings to protect, advocate for, and help your struggling child. I often read quotes from the story aloud to my daughter because they described what she has been going through lately. She couldn't believe how spot on they were.
This story took me through a slew of emotions both comfortable and uncomfortable. It left me feeling hopeful for both Mallory and my daughter's futures. I loved it. I devoured it, and now my daughter is reading it. I highly recommend this to everyone, but especially to any parent of child with autism, anxiety, and/or depression.
It’s very rare that I come across a book and immediately know that I have to read it without knowing what I’m getting into, but Becoming Mallory was 100% that book. I don’t know what it was about this book that was practically screaming at me to read it, but I’m so glad that I did.
I related to so much of Mallory’s story, and I loved being able to see snippets of life going on around Mallory. I don’t typically like multiple POVs, but I loved it for this book, and I was wishing I could learn more about everyone else, as well! It would sometimes feel like a tease to get a chapter with another character only to switch off again, but it kept the story going.
This book was incredibly heartfelt and touching, and I found myself extremely emotional. This is a book I definitely plan to read over and over again. If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I absolutely would. I’m eternally grateful that I received an advanced copy of this book to read, and I am very happily leaving this review for honest feedback.
This book is a must read for everyone but especially anyone with any neurodivergence’s, parents and siblings of disabled children. This book perfectly captures the struggles of Autism and mental illness (and other neurodivergence’s such as dyslexia) and how this can affect the whole family.
My first thought when reading this book was that is was incredibly easy for my dyslexic brain to read. I read it in 2 days! I definitely recommend it for anyone struggling to get back to reading due to dyslexia.
My second thought after finishing “Becoming Mallory” was Mallory could be me. This book is so relatable it was scary. Elaine has perfectly captured the stress and confusion of Autism and mental illness.
I loved that this book advocated for the rights of people with a disability. It normalise inter ability relationships and shows that everyone deserves love.
I personally enjoyed the inclusion of equine therapy and general horse riding as a fellow horse girl.
This book made me laugh, cry and want to throw my phone across the room and I am it will for anyone who reads it.
Mallory Givens is autistic – something her parents Laura and Scott initially find difficult to come to terms with. As Mallory grows up, however, Laura and Scott learn about autism and, as Mallory’s advocates, must tackle the ignorance of others, unhelpful teachers and a world that is intolerant of people who don’t fit neatly in the neurotypical mould.
Mallory herself, as she heads through her teenage years and towards adulthood (and adult relationships) has so much more to deal with than her parents do – this is her life in an unaccepting world.
I titled this review ‘A Journey of Discovery’ and this is many-fold in this book. It includes the journeys of Mallory herself, of her parents and of others who come to know her. Mallory’s journey is not without trauma, so be prepared for a ride that is harrowing at times (trigger warning re suicidal thoughts and depression). An excellent book.
A courageous family continually growing in love and empathy. An outstanding book, based on the author’s own family, which explores the sensitive topic of a child with special needs. Laura and Scot, with children Jake and Mallory, are a typical all-American family, until Laura notices that Mallory’s milestone achievement is atypical…. The reader becomes an integral part of the saga when Mallorys autism diagnosis is confirmed and gradually accepted by the extended family. While Laura and Scott, as parents, learn to deal with Mallory’s needs, Jake helps them realise that he is also an important part of the unit with his own needs. The chapters highlighting Mallory’s point of view are eloquent and heart-rending, especially when Caleb is introduced. There is so much that can be said about this book, but suffice to say: read it! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
An incredible story, one that is hard to put down. Mallory is diagnosed with autism at elementary school age. Though her parents try, at first, to deny it, they become incredibly supportive. On the higher end of the spectrum, Mallory leads a somewhat normal life, until she falls in love as a junior in high school, with a typical boy. When he tells her that he is moving to California for college, her world and her fragile mentality falls apart. He doesn't get the chance to tell her that going to Stanford is the only way his father will pay for college.
Written from the view of her mom, her dad, Mallory, and her boyfriend really gives the reader insight into how everyone feels and copes with the autism and an atypical girl falling for a typical boy. The characters are so well written that I was surprised at the end to find out it was a novel and not real. A real life storyline and a satisfying ending makes this a great read. #GoodreadsGiveaway

This is the first Advanced Reader Copy I have read that suggests that the events are more than fiction. Writing a book about mental illness and autism while finding the balance between reality and empathy is one of the most challenging things to do. Elaine Evans writes a full circle story, giving each member of the family to show their love and support to Mallory. On the other hand, Mallory is a character who gives life to people experiencing mental illness and autism by accepting reality while doing her best to live a better life. She is grateful and, at the same time, exerts herself to grow despite the struggles that she experiences. Becoming Mallory is about finding hope and being fearless, chasing a dream despite unfavorable circumstances.
Becoming Mallory brings u into an immserive experience of a family learning of their daughter’s autism diagnosis - you have a front row seat as we follow along with her family and friends’ reactions and eventual acceptance of her diagnosis and into her early adult years. It is based on the author’s own experience with her daughter who has autism.
Elaine gives u POV changes for each character and small time jumps that really move the story forward. I can’t tell u how many times she transported me back into my living room as a teenager watching a 90s sitcom family like the Matthews help their children navigate the harsh realities of life. It was all just so real and raw.
Also, if you need a romantic subplot, boy are you in for a treat because the romance with Caleb is one of the most pure I’ve read in a while, and I cannot explain how many times I was holding my breath during the text conversations later on ( won’t go into more detail or I’ll give too much away)
TW warnings below 👇 -suicide ideation & mentions of self-harm
This book was exactly what I needed. Sometimes stories have a way of finding you. It was hard reading the beginning where her parents didn’t want to fully accept what could be wrong with their daughter. It turned into such a beautiful story of struggle from both sides. I appreciated getting to read the events from multiple POVs. The author does a great job dealing with some sensitive topics and I suggest checking your warnings. The timeline moved so well and could easily understand the point in her life and what she needed to go through and learn to make her better in the future.
This book hits home for me! I have a child with autism and the early years of this book had me in tears. Hearing how Jake felt when he was younger due to Mallory and the care she needed. It took me a long time to read this book because every emotion in the book is real for me and my family. Elaine, you did an amazing job capturing what life is like with a child on the spectrum, who also struggles with school, social skills, etc. you my friend have given me so much hope for my son as he grows!
