The miracle of friendship spills from every page, bringing in not only the ups but also the downs to create a touching and warming read.

This book is all about friendship. While the cover already hints at the diversity covered in these pages, that's only the beginning. Friendship ranges from old to young, short moments to year-long relationships, and includes happy times as well as sad experiences. All of that comes into play with only a short phrase or two on each page, making this a nice read-aloud, which lets these illustrations really shine.

The illustrations bring each situation to life, allowing the scenes to hit with familiarity and draw young readers/listeners in. The vast array of characters and situations not only demonstrates the huge range friendship covers, but also gives something for almost every reader/listener to identify with...good and sad. The ending leaves a positive note with a sense of care and warmth.
I received a DRC and enjoyed the broad spectrum this book covers.

Richie’s Picks: FRIENDS by Daniela Sosa, Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman, September 2022, 40p., ISBN: 978-1-6659-1147-4

“Life is partly what we make it, and partly what it is made by the friends we choose.”
– Chinese philosopher, educator and popular lecturer Dr. Tehyi Hsieh (1948).

“I don't want to meet your kin
Make you spin or do you in
Or select you or dissect you
Or inspect you or reject you
All I really want to do
Is, baby, be friends with you”
– Bob Dylan (1965)

“You will meet many friends, and each friendship will be different.
Some friends are there from the start.
Others come exactly when you need them.
Some friendships last only a few moments.
Others last a lifetime.
Friends can be very close or far away.
Some friendships don’t need words.
Others begin with words
or end with words.”

Daniela Sosa’s poetic debut picture book FRIENDS is a lovely exploration of friendship, showcasing a diverse bunch of happy young characters.

They are friends...or almost friends. In a particularly poignant spread, a young boy and girl look at one another through the window of a train as the train is about to leave the station. The caption is, “Some friendships could have been, but weren’t.” The book also depicts friendships ending, an experience that humans of all ages occasionally suffer from.

FRIENDS will help promote kindness and friendship to the fives- and sixes- who are the prime audience for this great picture book. It can pave the way for classroom or home discussions about the pleasures and pitfalls of friendships.

Adults would be wise to supplement the book by modeling positive friendship behaviors and explaining that being good friends typically requires putting some time and effort into the relationship. Grownups can encourage children to speak respectfully and avoid negativity and rumor mongering. They can also teach valuable active listening and conflict resolution techniques.

So, let me give you some friendly advice: track down a copy of FRIENDS!

FRIENDS is a celebration of friendship in all its iterations. Told through a poetic form about all the friends who come and go in our lives, be they near or far, the story talks about all the ways that friends may manifest and the ways that friendships may change.

What I loved: The illustrations are absolutely lovely and capture all the beauty of friendship as well as the many types and changes friendships will go through. The children shown are diverse throughout, and the story manages to capture a detailed glimpse into different friendships, such as old friends who are meeting in the park or missed friendships of the children on subway and platform in the same special jacket. The text is simple but poetic throughout and will likely inspire discussion amongst young children of the different friendships they have seen and known.

Importantly, the book also discusses the other sides of friendship in light terms, when it can be tougher to be separated by distance or a disagreement. Some friendships come and go, and they remain important to us for however long we have them. While it does not dwell on either side, the book does acknowledge all the different elements that make friendship so special.

Final verdict: Overall, FRIENDS is a simple but lovely picture book that celebrates friendship in all its magical forms. Recommend for preschool and young elementary school readers.

Hello, friends! Our book today is Friends by Daniela Sosa, a surprisingly candid look at the world of friendship for young readers.

What is a friend? It could be someone you’ve known since birth, or someone you’ve only just met. Someone who was your friend for just a short while, or someone whose friendship will follow you for decades. Friends can be imaginary, or live far away, or perhaps be someone you haven’t met yet. Friendships can teach us, test us, hurt us, and heal us. We can make friendships and lose them, or sometimes we simply grow out of them. But one thing is for sure: even if you feel like you’ll never find a friend, be patient and look closer – a friend may be nearer than you realize.

Boldly realistic yet uplifting. Even for children, friendships can be complicated and mutable things, and Sosa takes a unique approach to the concept with a book that explores both the highs and lows of interpersonal relationships. Adult readers will recognize the sometimes bittersweet aspects of friendship that Sosa describes, yet she manages to do so in a way that never loses sense the excitement, support, or joy that comes from friendships (even temporary ones). It’s a far more complex and honest look at friendships, and one that leaves younger bookworms with realistic understandings and expectations than simply being “best friends forever.” A diverse cast and soft, homey, emotive illustrations nicely match the subject matter. The length is perfect for a storytime, and JJ and I both really enjoyed this one, especially the sincere yet hopeful tone. Overall, this is a unique title for children who may have questions about friendship and want frank answers, and we recommend it. Baby Bookworm approved!

Oude, nieuwe, beste…Vrienden.

Mooi, mooi, mooi!

“Friends” by Daniela Sosa is about the different types of friendships. They discuss the ways some friendships may start and end, who can be considered a friend, how having a friend can make you feel, and what you can learn from a friend. This book describes reality in the way some friendships might not last because of an argument, or how a dog can be your best friend. It describes the different emotions one might have towards a friend, and how a friendship can start at a random time or at any age. This book has many different connections to a different scenario a kid can fit into. Sometimes it’s hard to talk with someone at a young age, while others can talk to everyone and have many friends. Others have long distant friends, imaginary friends or friends who are physically right by their side. These scenarios help shape how friends are found, while showing how friend groups can grow or become smaller with time. The characters are also of different skin tones, age range, and have disability representation. In Moebius’ Introduction to Picturebook Codes, he discusses the way in “what is presented in the text usually obeys certain conventions of recognizability and continuity” (251). Within two pages of the book, it shows three pictures that describe how one girl becomes friends with another girl entered into the scene, then three kids altogether ice skate across the picture on the right. The text shows how friends can grow with more friends. However, in the next two pages, it's connected together to show one big space of the ice, with one girl left skating alone, and two sets of ice skate marks continuing through the page.

Very cute illustrations and fairly simple text tell and show some of the many types of friends you can have. The text is quite simple but some of the ideas are a bit abstract (the text and the illustrations work closely hand in hand and you need to understand the connection between the two) so I think this would be best for elementary and up and would probably work best in a lower elementary storytime.

Though there is good racial representation, all of the children have the same body type (thin) and are all even almost the same height. There is one child in a wheelchair but it's almost like the illustrator was just checking a box because they are only in one picture and didn't even appear for a second time on one of the last page spreads that has a large number of children...but I guess they're in there once, so that's nice?

A sweet picture book all about friends and friendship. Sometimes, friendships last forever. Sometimes they last one day. Sometimes, the potential of a friendship is just barely missed. Some friendships are forged out of similarities, while others are forged from differences. There's no right or wrong way to have a friendship!

Through Daniela Sosa's illustrations, which are bright and cozy, we understand that friendships are hand-crafted and meaningful. This is great to read to a little one getting ready for their first day of daycare, pre-k, or other group activity!

I love getting to read picture book debuts by author/illustrators.

Daniela Sosa gives us an introduction into Friends...of all kinds, how to make them, why we can lose them, and everything that goes into Friendship.

Sosa's illustrations remind me of a hybrid Charles Schulz/Tomie DePaola and I'm here for it!
The emotions evoked by the children featured also keeps the book relevant and engaging.
The text is fast-paced and simplistic for school or library groups as well.

I love the value of friendship and this is a book I want to read again and again to my kids so they see friendship possibility and beauty everywhere. I rated it 4/5 because I felt like I needed it to sum up a little differently than it did. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but it didn’t feel like it quite landed the plane.

Heerlijk! Ik zou hem helemaal aanraden!

I absolutely loved this book! The illustrations were cute and the story was great. It discusses the different friendships you will have over the course of your lifetime and how they will grow or change. It put it in simplistic terms, but still understandable to children.

Tengo um "fraquinho" com livros que versam sobre a amizade... Na minha opinião, o melhor sentimento que podemos ter por outras pessoas, quando realmente verdadeiro.
