The tone of this genre-defying book feels like a teen or YA coming-of-age urban fantasy for most of the story, with the important exception that it is riddled with frequent and potent adult profanity (think ‘f-‘, ‘s-‘ and ‘c-‘ words!).

The main character, teen Olivia struggles with domestic abuse and being a young carer to her mother, then weird things start happening, leading her to doubt her own sanity. There is some interesting exploration of whether Olivia is sliding into inherited mental illness and how that affects her already-difficult life before the book takes a turn towards something more magical, and science-fantasy-esque instead.

Although the book stands alone and has a satisfying story arc and conclusion, there are some questions left open for a potential future sequel, and I would definitely be interested in seeing more of the Mentats and their unique powers.

This is clever speculative fiction with plenty of action and intrigue, and some huge twists that you are highly unlikely to guess. Ideal reading for anyone who likes to read outside of the familiar genre boxes (and isn’t sensitive to strong language!).
