Our first glance at the masquerade is electric, then he rescues me.
He’s a mysterious figure in the crowd I can’t resist, testing every ounce of my willpower.
I’ve never experienced such an intense attraction, nor has anyone brought out a submissive side of me.
Yet I crave everything he embodies.
For a fleeting moment, he was my hero, but he disappeared as quickly as he appeared.
And I’m reminded why I guard my heart against falling for another man…
However, he returns months later, transformed. Now more assertive, he declares his intention to claim me.
His words send a clear message… I am to be his.

Saved by the Mercenary (also known as Bred by the Mercenary), part of the Baby Breeder Session 2 series, was about 24-year-old Amelia, a waitress at the Cactus Canyon Bar, and Daxton
After breaking up with her abusive boyfriend on the way to a party, Amelia was saved by a stranger from another abusive man who was putting the moves on her. After the stranger dealt with the other man, he disappeared and reappeared more than once, only for the two of them to escape to a secluded balcony for a spicy moment. Unfortunately, they got interrupted before things went too far, and the stranger, who had introduced himself as Daxton, got a call and disappeared without exchanging any information with her.
Several months after the party, Amelia was working when she heard a familiar song, one that she remembered hearing at the party. She would soon learn that Daxton had purchased the bar she worked at and was in the process of seeing her again. She also had the problem of her ex stalking her.
This story had plenty of angst, drama, and conflict, with a rollercoaster ride full of twists and turns. While it had plenty of grit, there was still the feeling that it was rushed and incomplete. The two main characters had almost no backstory, so there wasn't much to show whether or not there was any growth for either of them.
The book was both boring and predictable, with hardly anything to hold the reader's attention. I started this book two days before I wrote the review, and that never happens. I can finish a book this size in less than 4 hours. This story was not at all riveting, and it could not hold my attention.
The book had potential, but the author didn't tap into it or write it to the fullest. It was just okay. There were too many grammatical errors and the flow of the story was too choppy. I only gave this a two-star rating because that's all it earned.
Amelia breaks up with Ryker, then gets accosted by a stranger. Daxton saves her, spends time in a hot embrace, then, suddenly, he leaves. Months pass when she finds out there was a murder that same night. She's worried it was Daxton until she finds out he just became her new boss. She can't deal with that on top of Ryker stalking her. Will Daxton save her?
There is a jump in PoV mid-chapter 4 that makes things confusing. Her age changes in the book (22 to 24), but it also stated only (3 or a few) months had passed. There was also a scene that says Daxton drives a mustang, but later, he's driving an SUV. The story and plot are there. There are just issues.
Amelia finally takes a stand, defends herself and cuts the dead weight that was her relationship, to then be swept off her feet by the dark and mysterious Daxton. Labels and personas can be so misleading, "good guys" who you meet in the library can turn out to be very, very bad and abusive. A Mercenary who lives in the shadows and is essentially a hitman can turn out to be a gentleman and the perfect guy who protects and worships his woman...can you ever trust a first impression or are we all wearing masks? A great addition to the series, I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
Had to take off stars because it’s not properly acknowledged that the FMC hit her ex, in the face, first. Yes he was a jerk but she is the one that assaulted him then got upset when he hit her back and compared him to her abusive father. Red flags all around from all of the characters.
