I’ve devoured this series and enjoyed it overall, but I’ve always struggled with the heavy-handed, misogynistic undertones in how the “mates” are written. Unfortunately, this book crossed a line for me. One of the strongest female characters in the entire series was reduced to someone pathetic and one-dimensional.
Everything became about Slade—his feelings, his thoughts, his control—while Jill was constantly portrayed as wrong, weak, or insecure. The character I respected for her strength and independence was stripped down to nothing more than her self-doubt, while nearly every male around her was framed as strong, protective, and all-knowing. It’s frustrating, and frankly insulting, that the author consistently reduces her female characters to “fragile, broken women” in need of male validation and rescue.
This book left me angry and disappointed. I expected more for Jill.
