Book of Shadows #2

Tethered Souls

Rate this book
I DON'T NEED A WIFE. I NEED A WOMB.

When the Boss of the Shadow Domain buys me from my father, he is very clear about what he wants from me. I'm not to speak unless spoken to. I'm to visit his bedroom every night, then sleep downstairs. There will never be any friendship between us, just a master I'm to serve.

But his jealousy is quick to show, and his obsession of me is dark and dangerous. He kills anyone who looks me, and he takes me whenever he wants.

As his enemies close in on him, I'm thrown into the line of fire. But when I get hurt, will Varius find another bride, or will he finally admit he wants me for more than just a womb?

Miranda Grant is not a serial killer.

As an author of fantasy and paranormal romance, she just needs to know some things, like how many dead babies can fit in a bathtub (34, 52.5 if blended), what human meat tastes like (dry pork), how to get away with murder (it’s really hard to tell the difference between a drowning accident and a drowning murder, just saying), etc.

This non-serial killer lady lives with her partner, who often drags her outside, claiming ‘sunlight is necessary’ and ‘social interactions are a good thing’. Given her questionable search history, she goes along with it, thinking it’ll be better to have less ‘aloof serial killer vibes’ should the police ever knock on her door…

okay so this might spoil one thing about cursed to be mine and broken souls but i know some people will have the same questions as i did so im here to answer it sooo be warned 🫣😂

so DUAL VIRGINSSSSSSSSS
scary bad man who isn’t so scary, just a sad man who thinks everyone is out to kill him is a VIRGINNNNNN and shit at fingering 😂 and lactose intolerant 😂😂😂😂 like everything about that made me love Varius so much.

I felt SO bad for him….living his life paranoid that he is going to be murdered at any moment, never knowing peace, and having his biggest fear be being happy 😭 now don’t get me wrong….he’s an ASS but he does it for a reason and it’s a pretty damn good reason.

Micha was also amazing and badass (even though she had bbs sometimes but she was sold to be a womb for Varius so i don’t blame her)

now the spoilery bit is that in Cursed to be Mine (which was published before this but the author’s suggested reading order is this one first) ALL of the brothers had to have sex with the brother’s blood bond to complete the ceremony. and Varius is one of the brothers so it made me a little grossed out because Micha and the h in CTBM are going to be sisters in law and like eww her husband fucked his brother’s bonded BUT IT DIDNT HAPPEN! Varius didn’t have sex with her and had his shapeshifter brother go in twice to pretend because he couldn’t betray Micha 🫰🏻🫰🏻🫰🏻

but i know that the second book in their trilogy is DARK AS FUCKKKK so like im going to hold on to that sliver of happiness when he’s torturing her 😭🫣

i am loving this series so far and i can’t wait until Varius and Micha get their happy ending 🫶🏻

Disturbingly intense...

… or intensely disturbing; I haven’t quite decided yet as I am still trying to process what I’ve read. I came across an excerpt and was instantly fascinated. Even realizing it was the 3rd book of a series I couldn’t contain myself and jumped right in. There is so much to unpack, so maybe I start with saying that it is a dark paranormal mafia romance, a combination which might strike one as too much, but it actually works rather well, as the world building is done very deftly, with the paranormal elements woven into the narrative sparingly. If you have any triggers, then this book is probably not for you (and although it does NOT have cheating or a TSTL heroine, the insta-lust does sometimes scramble her brains, but despite that she is no doormat).

Varius is the leader of his family clan, but his position is rather precarious as he is a witch without any magic. Somebody has been trying to kill him, and so to solidify his position he has decided he needs an heir.
Micha has become an assassin in order to avoid being bartered off by her father to a more powerful family. But now that it appears that fate is to befall her younger sister, she sacrifices herself in her sister’s stead.
Although it is a marriage of convenience for both of them, the sparks fly right from the beginning. Varius and Micha’s relationship is volatile right from the start and Varius does not know whom to trust. Micha tries very hard to make their relationship work, even though Varius does not treat her the way he should. Just as Micha is feeling that she is making progress, things unravel and Varius is attacked from a side he did not expect. It not only amps up his paranoia, but also threatens to undermine the tenuous trust Micha has managed to build, and things get really dark.

So, if you value your sanity, DO NOT read Epilogue II, at least not before the next book, Broken Souls, is out.

I swear Miranda Grant has me hooked in the Shadow's world!

I thought Kahlid was something in cursed to be mine...then she wrote madness behind the mask and i was like nope, there is someone else that takes that spot...but now, Varius!! damn that man is WHOA!!

Varius is the oldest living kid of Sau's and the only one of her kids who did not ascend and gain powers. while he has fine senses, he does not have magic like the rest of his brothers.

he needs an heir...so he buys Micha in a deal with her father. IF she can get pregnant, he will marry her...but until then his only goal is fill her up...he doesn't want to get emotionally invested, but can he stay that way?

While the focus is on Varius, this is Micha's story. I cannot wait for book two...this ends in a major cliffhanger!!

story 5/5
spice 5/5

i received an ARC copy and this is my honest and true review

These books just keep getting better and better.
If you have triggers then DO NOT READ! This is not for the weak hearted people!!!!

Anyways, the story of the beginning for Micha and Varius, and boy you can't help but love the two main characters! Varius is really the biggest grouch you will ever read about but you kinda get why as you read through, Micha is a hard ass woman who also brings in the humour even at the worst possible time!

Watching these two like a tennis ball being hit across the court back and forth was amusing, horrifying and adorable!

Miranda is a brilliant writer and she has you hooked from the first words! I really can't wait to read the next part!!

Tethered Souls by Miranda Grant
Overall Score ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Heat Level 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

I had no idea how much I needed Micha's story. And this IS just as much her story as Varius'. After being introduced to Varius in Cursed to Be Mine I was quite interested to see how Miranda would make him...well.. likable. But after reading this book I just want to give him a big hug and wrap him in bubble wrap. I absolutely devoured the story and cannot wait for the second part of this duet.

What a ride. Too bad the next one isn't out yet because I'm hooked on this series. Still want to see more Aleric, but I guess I'll just have to hold tight and wait for my vampire to show back up and ruin everything.

5 stars for Varius and Micha. This book was not what I thought it would be. Its more. And Miranda managed to wreck me in a different way with another book in the Book of Shadows series. I really loved every second of it and this is the first time I'll be stopping a series even though I'd loved it this much because the next two books is just going to be too painful for me to read. So now I will stop without having even read the second epilogue ( you should too bc this is what the author suggests to read this book as a standalone). I will be reading the other standalone / not dark books in the world and maybe Sau's second book. The song that this book reminded me of was Wicked Game by Chris Isaak.

This book is not dark at all in my opinion, save a two torture scenes that is maybe considered dark. The couple is so good for each other, so green flag with so much yearning it makes my heart blow up. Varius really was my favorite character, the most paranoid MFer out there who is always in control, doesn't show affection in public but finds his solace in Micha the witty and capable assassin. Its arranged marriage, push and pull, grumpy and sunshine, she falls first, he falls harder, JPP hero who is so jealous it is so cute, oh and double virgin MCs. What more can you ask for? The author is so good at showing their feelings with actions, thoughts, you are rooting for them since day one. You just wanna hug Varius half the time, because he is hurting so bad and he is doing his best. This is one of my fav mafia romances ever even though it is supernatural too.

And the side characters are all memorable and lovely too, unlike the prequel. You get to know all the brothers and it is so refreshing. I love Maddox, Leno, Rudy, and Khalid the most. I love how they each have different abilities and are still fiercely loyal to their family.

Yet the fucked up world is so familiar, where pain and suffering and betrayal is around every corner. And honestly, I can't read about it anymore. I struggled with the prequel too because I got too attached to the characters and could not bear to watch them get bulldozed by the plot. And now with me attached to all the characters but having read how bad it could get in the prequel, I choose to believe they just all lived happily ever after at the end of this book. The world building is so rich and captivating, having read the prequel then this book 1000% made the experience better. It felt like saying high to an old friend. I just wish I could read more of the series and it wouldn't BREAK ME.

Not me wanting Miranda to write a super super soft version where every body lived happily ever after. LOL. I swear I read pitch black, but I just can't when the couple is a green forest but have to be burned down later on. I'd rather it start super dark like the prequel and not just get progressively worse. Me off to reading Khalid's book sometime in the future when I miss this world.

I'm convinced it's Miranda's GOAL to break her readers because.... WHAT

Having read Cursed already I knew what to expect (sort of) with how things were going to turn out between Micha and Varius but to see their story start from the beginning and to read that epilogue? My heart hurts

I am very curious on exactly how big the size difference is between Micha and Varius - it was made very clear up until the end of the book that he's too big for her (iykyk) but then at one point it's revealed he's eight inches.... so like, how SMALL is Micha then?? Because that doesn't seem so crazy a number but treated like he's a foot long... There's a pet brownie is his little brother's room so wondering if she's not just a witch isn't outside the realm of possibility but like.... my curiosity is getting the better of me!

The reveal on why Varius doesn't have any magic also made me dislike Sau just a bit more - she really likes keeping secrets that seem to fuck up her family and their plans doesn't she? Really wishing Aleric would just kidnap her so we never see her again - then again we all need more Aleric he's the best character throughout this series so far! So I guess no getting rid of her lol

The last few chapters gave me whiplash FOR SURE - Micha's being honest with Varius, the calmness of that last chapter only to TURN THE PAGE and get THAT?! And then when I open Broken Souls to start reading immediately I see there's a message inside from the author "I'm so sorry :("

I'M. TERRIFIED.

A dark, gripping romance that sinks its claws in and refuses to let go
Tethered Souls by Miranda Grant isn’t just a romance—it’s a slow, intoxicating descent into obsession, trauma, and the kind of connection that feels fated… or cursed.
Grant crafts a world where love isn’t soft—it’s sharp, shadowed, and born from wounds that never quite healed. The two main characters feel like fractured mirrors of each other: broken in different ways, but drawn together with a force that feels almost supernatural. Their chemistry burns hot, but it’s the emotional complexity that makes the story unforgettable. Every look, every touch, every moment between them carries weight.
What stands out most is the atmosphere. Grant writes with a cinematic darkness—snow falling against blood, quiet rooms filled with unspoken tension, and a constant sense that something dangerous is waiting just off the page. The trauma elements are handled with care but never softened, making the intimacy feel earned rather than rushed.
It’s messy, it’s raw, and it refuses to be a simple love story. Instead, it’s a beautifully twisted tale about two people who shouldn’t fit, yet somehow fit too well.
If you enjoy dark romance with emotional depth, haunted characters, and that delicious ache of tension that never fully releases until the final chapters, Tethered Souls will stay with you long after you close the book.

🌶🌶🌶🌶

•••

The story starts off 4 months before the events in book 1, Cursed To Be Mine.
Tethered Souls could be read first if reading according to chronological timeline is important to you. For me personally, knowing where we were headed made this book all the more gutwrenching.

There are things happening in this book that are horrific, but the writing is so good that you won't be able to put the book down. The characters are so loveable despite ALL being morally grey and wrapped in all the red flags. Micha is such a witty and strong character and Varius... I have to admit that I thought he was the absolute worst after book 1. And now I love him.

This book cemented for me that Khalid and Rudy are the best brothers anybody could wish for, and I'm also putting down my vote for a book from Maddox pov at some point 🥺💜

Other things that I love about this series:
• Disability rep: There's a blind character and a deaf character. They are treated equally by the other characters, the disability is not portrayed as a weakness, and the other characters take responsibility in being aware and adjusting how they communicate;
• The main characters are poc.

I am totally obsessed with the Book of Shadows series!!! I absolutely loved this book from beginning to end and can’t wait to see what happens next with Micha and Varius!!! Oh that cliffhanger has my brain spinning that hamster wheel in my head. I really enjoy Miranda Grants writing, she is gritty, don’t gloss over anything and tells these captivating stories that keep me turning the pages. This book is very very very dark and touches on themes and topics that are triggering. Please read the CW to see if you can handle her type of dark. The world she created is dark, scary and kept me on the edge of my seat. The storyline is original and beautifully written with vivid detail. The characters are complex and are broken in their own ways. Their chemistry is intense and explosive.

Micha is strong, determined and loyal. I loved her attitude and feistiness. Varius is very intense, stubborn and determined to get what he wants. They were tragic and heartbreaking. I laughed and cried a few times throughout this book. I felt my heart pick up pace with some scenes and wanted to scream at Varius a few times. Such an exciting, heartbreaking and mysterious book!!!

No one can write a story like Miranda Grant does. I am completely sucked in every time I read one. Regardless of which character it’s following, I’m all in.

I was so interested to see the beginning of Varius and Micha’s story. My heart broke so much for both of them. Even though I knew where this was heading, I still felt all the emotions.

The spicy scenes were fantastic, the connection and chemistry between Varius and Micha is intense.

That ending was brutal. I had false hope all the way to the very end. I need to know what happens from here.

There’s so much detail and things unfolding in this world.

On a separate note, my life is complete now that my name is in a book like this!! I squealed for hours and wouldn’t shut up about it! Thank you so much!! I just need to survive the rest of the series now 👀🤣

Also.. Let’s not forget my love Maddox!! He’s my favourite. I adored him in this!
Also Aleric, my other love (yes I clearly have a type, I’m not sorry about it) I loved seeing more of him.

I cannot wait to see what happens next for the Shadow family.

I LOVE this book with all my heart. This seres has stolen my heart from the very beginning. Micha deserves the world. She is one of my favorite characters. I loved her chemistry with Varius. I needed some warming up to do with Varius. After reading about Khalid and now he was with his Kira, it was a tough act to follow. But, the man is grumpy and stoic to the max that you end up falling in love with him even when he's being a little b.
This book has so many good characters like Micha, Dayne, Maddox, Rudy, the twins 👀, etc. that you want to keep them safe from what is about to happen with the Shadow Domain. There's a lot of action and secrets that may be best to keep hidden. Also, the amount of spiciness is off the charts. These two virgins really get the hand of things quickly. 🥵🤧
I loved them and can't wait for the next book! This cliffhanger is going to be the death of me. I need to know what happens next with these two.

Tethered Souls by Miranda Grant (@authormirandagrant )

Ahhh Didn’t know how much I needed this until I read it!

Wow! Varius and Micha have a very power and control heavy relationship. While they are both Alphas in their own domains, they are both forced to submit to each other, mentally and physically, which made for a SULTRY dynamic.

Their chemistry is rough, impassioned and desperate ~ it made for a very delicious read. ❤️‍🔥

Again WOW - I can’t wait to read more of Miranda Grant - I never thought I’d have such an appetite for dark supernatural romance, but I am so thrilled to have travelled down this rabbit hole!

So appreciative to have read this one and I look forward to all the spicy adventures ahead from this realm!

🎵🎶Also @chloeadamsmusic “Take me to hell” just fit so perfectly 💞

Stay safe, remember your safe words and keep on reading,

Ellie ❤️‍🔥🖤

It grew on me.

I have to be honest and say this was my 4th ever "dark romance" and the first two were ... okay at best. That being said, I actually didn't find this overly dark. Does that make me more into unhinged, pitch-black, touch her and die vibes than I initially thought? Maybe!

I found it started off a bit confusing ONLY because I can't relate to family members selling their children off for their wombs. I didn't understand a lot of the reasoning behind some characters actions but hey, I wasn't raised in a paranormal mafia family in the midst of a race war.

The pacing was great, the spicy scenes were hot AF. I liked the characters and thought Dayne was hilarious and relatable as a bestie. I started the book unsure, and found myself on the epilogue wanting more.

Omg OMG when I say you are gonna absolutely love Varius, I mean that with my whole chest!!! Him and Micha have such chemistry it blows your mind!!! Now mind you, you have to read the other books to get a complete understanding of how things are. I love his brothers like Khalid, Maddox and Rudy sigh they are my favs. There is trial and tribulations in this book sooo beware and if you got triggers please check them. I highly recommend this series!! Miranda is such a gifted writer, her imagination encapsulates you in the story. There is lots of spice and plot! You will not be disappointed guaranteed!!!

Believe the hype. What a wild ride. It was a lot of info, terms, and character dumping so I was a bit lost at times. I started with this book first so that may be the problem.

Full of Supernatural creatures. 3 major factions: Wolves (Death Hunt), Vampires (Blood Fangs), and the Witches (Shadow Domain). The three gangs are part of Mafia culture. A war is brewing (isn’t it always), which side will win?

The spice and slow burn was boiling 🥵. It’s definitely more plot than spice. But the spice was hot enough to scald when it did happen.

Just when you sigh in relief at the end…that last epilogue kills! Arrggghhhh!

A Tough Witch To Crack 🧙🥷
This one was the second book in the series but took place before the first book in the series and ended at the same point, which was weird. I’ll try to remember to read the next book coming out in a couple weeks, but I’m confused if this story is going to continue on from this point or no? 😂
Micha + Varius
Her family sold her to save her from the short life of an assassin.
His mother chose her to provide heirs for their bloodline.
What started as a business transaction gets a little complicated.
Have you read this one yet? What did you think?

This book is so amazing! I'm loving this entire series. Varius is the ultimate alpha bosshole. She is a freaking assassin, dont think I need to make any further comment on her badda$$ness!

He just wants her for a baby making machine and she is NOT all for that plan! Such a phenomenal read! This series is 10/10 chefs kiss perfection.

Do read the trigger warnings if you have sensitivities, this series is not sunshine, rainbows and cute puppies (although there is a cute dog 😘)

Holy Crap that was amazing! I keep falling further into the hole of this series and I freaking LOVE it! Each book keeps getting better and better! Tethered Souls was AMAZING! Varius and Micha were an unlikely couple that didn’t seem like much when I read Cursed to be Mine, but their story was freaking fantastic. It was spicy, dark and full of drama! But Holy Hell, that cliffhanger!!!! I cannot wait for the next book!!!!

DNF. Personally thought the potential was there but not a strong story line. Felt like some details were missing and then over explaining in other areas. The spice detail was also a little confusing and hard to filling get into because the author used the same verbiage when describing different areas. This part may not matter to most but I know I’m not alone: the texture of the book itself was too flimsy and the pages were very loud when turning the pages (over all not a sturdy book).

This was the first one I had read of Miranda Grants after seeing it recommended on TikTok.

Micha sets out to become her own strong independent woman until her father sets out to sell her to a family to keep and alliance. of course she is far from happy about this.

Varuis, the husband to be is closed off to everyone because of his own secrets he holds, even to his wife to be.

the story line is written amazingly well and the spice is this book is hot!!!

Both main characters are virgins—rare but kind of fun to see play out. Varius is an ass (a massive ass), but somehow you can’t help but like him. Micha, on the other hand, has so much room for growth that I’m dying to see where her character development goes.

I was SO frustrated in SO many parts of this book (seriously wanted to throw it a few times), but the smut was solid and kept me hooked. I’m not usually a fantasy reader, but I mostly enjoyed this one… and now I CANNOT WAIT FOR BOOK #2!

Overall I am enjoying this series. There is a ton of action, drama, betrayal, sexiness and more. I love the magic and the supernatural aspects. This book confused me a lot though. I did not know that is that happening before Cursed to Be Mine. I was so confused. It makes me want to go back to the end of the first book and read what happened to Micah. I am not sure which order these were actually supposed to be read in, I went by what was in GoodReads. I loved Micah and Varius.
