Love was a losing battle for this country music darling and a single dad, baseball star until one night brings them together and one small town sets the playing field for a possible winning streak.
They call me Lady Boss. Maneater. Queen. But beneath the makeup, blond wig, and glitzy costumes, I’m just a country girl who likes to sing. I don’t hate men, I’m just struggling to find a good one. I’ve learned my lesson. Fool me once, and it will never, ever happen again. So I’m baffled when I meet Ford Sylver.
A superstar in his own right as the centerfielder for the Chicago Anchors baseball team, plus a single dad to three adorable little girls, we share a moment when I save his firm backside and pretend he’s mine. Something that he can never be.
Only, when he suffers a season-changing injury and I need a place to disappear, we both end up back in Sterling Falls, where I’m suddenly and unwittingly his nanny.
There’s danger in having a wild side. I’ll try anything once. However, forced into close quarters with Ford, acting as his personal nurse, and caring for his three little ones might backfire. Because I’m staring at all I ever wanted and never thought would happen for me.
After losing at love in the past, could I finally be on a winning streak?

Obviously, JF Harding & CJ Bloom were spectacular bringing this story to life for me. I have enjoyed them both tremendously in the past and knew I’d enjoy them this time as well. I will say that as a *team* I’m not sure I’ve listened to them before and they were even more outstanding together than they have been separately in the scope of what I have listened to, so there’s that plus plus! :) 👏🏻👏🏻round of applause to them both for a job well done!👏🏻👏🏻
STORY REVIEW & RATING: 4.5 Stars
Listen, I have said this over and over again about Dunbar, but it is worth repeating, over and over again. She is one of the very few authors out there that has mastered the art of later in life romances, and I would go as far as saying she is the best at this craft. #fightme
The story of Cadence and Ford was … hopeful. It was inspiring. It was one step forward, three steps back. It was uplifting and frustrating at times. It was complicated but so full of love and emotion that I felt every word, every circumstance, every up and every down. I felt this story.
I don’t need to tell you guys what the number one way a story becomes a 5-star read, right? Okay, I’ll tell you anyway. It doesn’t matter if a story (which I’m not saying this story had any of these) has overly dramatic shenanigans, unnecessary third-act break-ups or even adults not adulting properly, because if an author makes me feel a story from beginning to end, it is pretty hard to upset me with the aforementioned shenanigans. I gotta feel the story as if I was living it. That is a the most important criteria of a 5-star read. I’m rating this story 5 stars so …
I loved everything about the development of Cadence & Ford. Later in life stories are rarely easy. People come with baggage; that’s a guarantee. That makes the storyline complicated all on its own, without adding anything to it. But Dunbar can add toppings to any of her stories and end up with the most delicious sundae you’ve ever tasted. Every Single Time. She did it with Sterling Streak and I for one look forward to every single time she does it! Now, go do the thing. #trust
friends, i swear these books DONT HAVE THE PEOPLE ON THE COVERS.
moving on: she did way too much for a man who couldn’t even hear her out before he flew off the rails. he could have groveled a lot more than that tbh.
This book was kinda cute but it really bothered me how the author clearly mirrored the main characters & some significant things they did off a popular celebrity couple who are in the spotlight… The story is about a “country Singer”(but she doesn’t stick to one genre)& a “Baseball player”… I have no issue with any of this… However, when the “singer” tells her Athletic Boyfriend that she is “Re-recording” her albums after buying or acquiring the rights to them… & how she hopes her fans embrace this idea she had decided on… At that point I’m like oookayyyy this is def not original… but I’ll keep reading… however when the Baseball player brought friendship bracelets to the “singer” during her concert & put his phone number on the friendship bracelet…. I was pretty much done…. Maybe I’m just being picky but an author should come up with creative things to include in their books… & it just strikes me as lazy and unoriginal to basically copy and paste someone else’s life choices& actions instead of using their creativity to write a book that doesn’t copy the actions of real life celebrities… maybe I’m to sensitive… it’s just that I’m a pretty big Taylor Swift fan& I loved how Travis did this huge gesture with his number on a friendship bracelet yet I felt like this author just wrote this, just included these actions as though they made it up when it was just copied….🤷🏼♀️

First, there is not an ounce of chemistry between the two main characters. Second, Ford, the MMC is the worst character. He's a girl dad and he does absolutely nothing to be a good dad. He doesn't braid their hair, or teach them any thing. He has nannies and family, and he let's them do it all while he sulks and has a bad attitude. Third, the first 50% of this book is a lesson on noncommunication. They have all these internal dialogues and pride and just don't communicate. I skimmed the majority of this book as it was that boring. The author really missed the mark with this one.
Cadence and Ford’s story has a lot going on, and I enjoyed every page. Can Sterling Falls have its magical ways with our latest couple? Both have successful professional lives but are seeking what their professions cannot provide. Both have not had luck in the love department; he is looking to slow the pace, and she a family. Life is a mystery, but can together they be their solution?
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
Oh be still my thumping heart, the Sterling Falls Sylver men are just too scrumptious, too sexy and too alpha good to be true. I'm here for ALL of them. Sebastian, the baker was in Sterling Heat His brother Knox was in Sterling Brick. And now we have the third heartstopper, Ford, who with his adorable three girls just swoops in and takes my heart away.
" I want to be Ford Sylver, brother to Sebastian Sylver, who owns the Curmudgeon Bakery. Not Ford Sylver, center fielder for the Chicago Anchors baseball team, otherwise known as The Streak. "
His tequila driven rendezvous with the country music superstar, Cadence Calloway, starts a new story going. It goes through the usual tug-of-war between hearts and minds, but ultimately love wins.
"As the owner of a lonely heart and the queen of broken heart harmonies, my image has sold millions of albums, garnered millions of fans, and made me millions of dollars. And still, I’m stuck in the one place I’d rather not be. Alone"
Dunbar is undisputed queen of mature romances and after having written multitude of sexy silver foxes, one after the other, her stories never stale. They are fresh, with brand new emotions, different set of problems and the way she tackles them is a simple delight to read. I'm her ardent fan and will continue with my loyalty 5 stars for Good Luck Duck Follow me on: Email🌻 Bookbub 🌻 Twitter🌻 Instagram🌻 Blog🌻 Facebook🌻 Amazon 🌻
Ford Sylver is in the midst of a life crisis. His wife has left him for a teammate and his three young girls need him more than ever. When he returns to Sterling Falls for his younger brother, Sebastian's wedding, he meets the bride's sister, Cadence. She is a country superstar going through her own issues. She has a stalker and is trying to overcome the guilt and shame from her last relationship. I will say that Cadence demands a lot of apoligies from Ford. She doesn't give any, but she does expect them from him. Her behavior was exactly exemplar and she was kind of stalkerish at points. I felt she was overstepped several times when it came to Ford and his girls. They were his girls and she acted like she had some kind of say about Ford and his life. Ford wasn't always a gentleman, but he also wasn't trying to hurt anyone either. He was bumbling his way through life the same as she was. I will say that this book went a bit too far for me with the June incident. Cadence most definitely owed an apology. It was, in fact, her past choices that put June in that situation. It wasn't just Ford's fault for what transpired. I am a firm believer that people need to own their mistakes and she definitely wasn't owning hers for most of this book. Hiding - yes, owning them - no. I never really connected with either one of them because she kept running away for months at a time. For people in their mid to late 30's I expected more adult behavior and less bumbling teenager behavior. The parallels between these 2 characters and Taylor Swift and Travis Kelcie was a bit too much also. The friendship bracelets put me over the edge.
What I’m Starry-Eyed Over: 🤩 Captivating meet-cute right away. And the meet-again (the next day) is a little cute and a little ugly and so entertaining. 🤩 A famous singer/song-writing/music artist and a professional baseball player, yes please!! 🤩 We get some real singing in action and some real time on the baseball field. 🤩 I fell in love with the MCs early on. I love how Ford gets protective and stands up to Cadence’s dad right away, in the best snarky way. I love how Cadence is a gentle care-taker. 🤩 The narrators are fabulously cast and make me adore and lust over the MCs even more. 🤩 It just feels so good each time Cadence shows up. 🤩 I love a little jealousy, both ways. 🤩 The forced proximity, their chemistry, and the sneaking around—all worked on me. 🤩 You guessed it—Cadence Calloway and Ford Sylver are are hot!! The steamy moments are intimate and detailed and fabulous. 🤩 Family, found family, and all that goodness.
What I’m Wishing/Dizzy About: 💫 Some steamy details after the outdoor concert & make-out session would have been so right. 💫 Miscommunication can feel annoying, especially when it seems a little out of character for Cadence. She’s usually pretty good at communicating and getting answers. 💫 Ford could probably use some therapy. Maybe all of them could, actually.
⭐⭐⭐.5 (this story didn't sit right with my spirit, I just didn't like how Cadence didn't understand Ford's fears, especially about the safety of his girls, while expecting him to understand hers. And the fact these two had the worst communication I've ever seen in romance. Too much inner monologues, and not enough talking. ) 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (The banter and spicy scenes were the best part of this book, though I will never be able to look at a Banana Split the same way again 😂)
After reading Elevator Pitch last year, and immediately connecting Ford to that story while reading Sterling Fight. My interests were piqued at what the other side of the story was. And it's pure genius how LB Dunbar was able to connect the two series.
I'm glad like usual LB Dunbar allowed Ford and Cadence to explore each other, and let their love grow. While highlighting how damaging secrets can be. While Sebastian was petty AF for dropping those Cadence bombshells on Ford. I oddly I'm happy he did. At least someone in this story was being honest. However I loved that Ford quickly recognized that Cadence just wanted to be loved. And for that I appreciate this couple, because the people who appear the strongest often want someone to love them and make the noise stop.
The last 25% of the book was my favorite, and the reason this wasn't a 3 star read. Plus the Sterling sibling interactions. They consistently keep each other rooted in reality. But I'm still rounding down to 3 overall.
Despite my feelings towards Cadence she was fantastic with Ford's girls. I loved seeing their relationship. Her empathy is what Ford and the girls needed. “Sometimes it’s better to have one whole, great parent than the half- hearts of two,” Cadence says."
“When people are mean, it’s okay to feel upset. You feel how you feel, but how you react towards that person determines the type of person you are.” “You be the better person, then,” Cadence corrects. “That means, you hold your beautiful head up high and smile despite what she said.” Cadence imitates her suggestion.
"I wanted a lucky duck, too, Daddy. So I made myself one. It’s romance, right? I’m giving it to me because I love me.” 😭😭😭😭🤧 that's right Winnie love yourself.
Now onto my rant:
Ford and Cadence gave me whiplash 😂. And the whole time I was singing to myself Quit Playing Games with my Heart. Cause these two were something else. And I think it came down to the fact they didn't know who they were as people. Often Cadence in the same sentence would say she wanted to be treated like Caitlin, but then would play fully into her reputation, which made me sad.
Ford and Cadence are the perfect example of how money doesn't buy happiness. And it was quite interesting to see the sisterhood between Enya and Cadence. Regarding Cadence, having worldly procession, but craving love and stability. But Enya inviting her parents to the wedding was wild. And I wanted to throat punch them the entire time.
I myself can understand what it's like to have other misjudge you and never offer you any grace despite what you are going through. And therefore this book was an emotional read for me. But the similarities stopped at the fact I've learned that sitting around hoping for things, never changes anything.
Enya and Sebastian's wedding went exactly like I guess, and I loved every bit of it. When he carried her down the aisle I swooned, he's such a golden retriever! Though the situation with Ford and Sebastian made the evening bittersweet.
I was rooting for Ford and Cadence but their lack of communication throughout the entire book was frustrating. Like y'all can sleep next to each other but not be honest with your feelings. This ball in your court stuff is cute in highschool, but not two people pushing 40. Communicate people, life's too short not to.
Felicity is at the top of my list of fictional characters where it would be on sight 💀. Right next to Sae from Peach Girl.
The quote that hit me right in the heart strings 😭.
“Explain to me the significance of the old one.” “My parents had it.” She shrugs, keeping her eyes dipped despite her face pointed at me. “I never wanted to change it in case they decided to call.” Her voice drops quieter with the explanation. “I’m sorry, Cadence. They suck.”
Enya and Cadence's parent are on my list too, they indeed suck!
Now I'm going to be that person: Spoilers Ahead
Cadence didn't sit right with me, and I guess I could be me being a bit judgemental. But whenever she said "trouble follows me" I just rolled my eyes. It's clearly not her first rodeo, she's 35/36, and her frontal lobe is fully developed there as to be a point in her life where her red flag radar needs to go off.
In the world of Google a lot of Cadence's excuses just didn't make sense. If Evan was famous, I'm sure a quick Google search would have given her all her answers she needed. And someone as famous as she was needs to make sure the man in her life couldn't potentially be a threat to her career. When Ford tells her this, and Cadence got into her feelings, I'm sorry but she needed to be told off. If someone kidnapped my kid, because of any connection to the person I was dating, there would be hell to pay 💀.
Cadence had an accountability issue, actions have consequences. But she read like she felt like hers shouldn't. Ford was completely right, she should have ran a background check on Evan. It's tough to hear but it's true. And Ford had the right to be upset his daughter was taken. And her once again running away was just annoying. Ultimately I believe Evan is the villain in all this, but I feel more could have been done to ensure the Angela/June situation didn't happen. Why did Cadence still have a social media presence with a known stalker after her 🥴.
People other than her have feelings, and the right to express them just as much as she. She wants other people's trust, but she is rarely completely honest, so why would anyone trust her.
And often I feel she got into trouble simply because of either pride or accepting the false image others created of her. (or maybe just stupidity).
Will the real Caitlin Calloway please stand up.
“I’m not looking for commitment, Cadence.” “Neither am I,” I state, finding I’m the unsteady one. Why can’t he commit to me? Why hasn’t any man been able to?
"I want him, too, but I won’t admit it. I can’t."
"But he didn't chase after me" uhhhh yes he did darlin, you told him goodbye.
Girl bye! (Alexa play quit playing games with my heart) 😭😭
Sterling Streak is the third book in the Sterling Falls series, but it can be read as a standalone.
Cadence (or Caitlin as Ford called her) and Ford spent a night together…but not in the typical one-night stand way. When they run into each other again, they realize they’re about to be family (her sister is marrying his brother).
These two had their own problems, their own demons to deal with, so they couldn’t just give in to the attraction between them.
Ford was a professional baseball player and a newly single father , and he just wanted the best for his daughters. He struggled to take care of them on his own, but he also didn’t just trust anyone.
Cadence was a famous country singer, but she didn’t have it easy. Her parents, namely her father, never once had faith in her and only thought the worst of her. And she also had trust issues.
These two didn’t have it easy, but they slowly started to let each other in. And they had their ups and downs, just like in real life. But they both showed up, and they managed to find healing with each other.
Audio: Narrators: J.F. Harding and C.J. Bloom Style: Dual
Both J.F. and C.J. are narrators I’ve listened to before, and I knew they would do a great job. They truly brought the story and characters to life.
What happens when your one night stand turns out to be your sister’s new brother-in-law? You play nice, get through the festivities, and escape. But when you need a break from your singing career’s pressure and decide to hang out in small-town Sterling Falls and the one night stand is now staying in Sterling Falls for the summer with his three adorable little girls?
The world just got a lot smaller and a whole lot more interesting for superstar Cadence and MBL center fielder Ford Sylver. Their families are intertwined, so there's no avoiding each other, or avoiding the attraction that still simmers between them.
Boy, oh boy, this talented storyteller doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to drama with this one. Amidst that is an admirable family bond, a compelling romance, and the most precious enchantment between three little girls and Cadence. Humorous, hot, and full of heart, you won’t want to miss this charming, evocative, unforgettable romance!
I enjoyed this one on audio! This was my first book by this author. I loved the small town vibes and how each section was written with the baseball season in mind. This is Ford and Cadence's story.
I listened to an advanced copy of the audiobook. It's amazing! Performed in dual narration by JF Harding and CJ Bloom. These two gave an outstanding performance. JF Harding gave Ford's voice that charming persona who adores his three daughters. CJ Bloom gave Cadence voice that soft tone and she showed Cadence's empathetic, caring and loving side.
I enjoyed the flirty banter between Ford and Cadence. When Ford suffers a season-changing injury and Cadence needs a place to hide from her singer life. Both of them end up in Sterling Falls. She ends up being the nanny of his three daughters while also being his personal nurse. Due to her past Cadence never thought she would find love again until now.
I was surprised there was also some suspense in the story. I was also shocked by the twist in Cadence past love. This story has a little bit of everything for a small town romance. Highly recommend!
Audiobook out now!
Thank you to @homecookedbookspromos and for my gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.
Plot- or character-driven? A mix Strong character development? Yes Loveable characters? Yes Diverse cast of characters? No Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes
This is a perfect fit for readers who adore small-town romances, sports-themed stories, and forced-proximity tales, as well as those who enjoy a strong-willed heroine and a swoon-worthy single dad, all set against the backdrop of a charming small town where love and redemption await.
Content Warnings Moderate: Alcohol, Infidelity, Kidnapping, and Injury/Injury detail
It wasn't a bad story, just a dull one. Lots going on, and it all felt superficial for lack of a better description. His stuff, her stuff, felt like filler. Then there was the time jumps, her demands he apologize, and she was the nanny??? I kept waiting..... Wasn't a bad story and your expectations may vary...
The characters in this story were so well written and the family dynamic incorporated perfectly! I loved how L.B. Dunbar expertly included the secondary characters into plot development which, by the way, was engrossing. I loved the three adorable little girls and how Cadence felt about them. Ford and Cadence were meant for each other!
This is a terrific romance and I love that the characters have to work a bit for their HEA. Love does not come easy for Ford and Cadence.
These two celebrities meet in the most non-celebrity way ever and then realize they will be family, in a way. Cadence takes an instant shine to Ford’s three young girls and proves to be a wonderful role model. Their bond is the impetus for Ford allowing himself to have to feelings for Cadence. But his insecurities run deep and it is not an easy path for these two. But I loved that Cadence showed up for him, even when it was difficult for her to do so.
I loved that this book showed us the opposite of what you’d expect when two celebrities get together. There is no glitz or glamour. There is only a single dad trying to show up every day for his kids and a woman who wants to love them all. Add in some antics from the notorious Sylver brothers and you have a wonderful story.
Ford and Cadence are one of my favorite L.B. Dunbar couples! I could really feel their heartfelt feelings and emotions as they both dealt with fame, family drama and the magic of love. To me they are the perfect couple because they can handle the limelight, are not afraid to take chances and can readily admit that life can be one big surprise.
Being home in Sterling Falls comes with a bevy of babysitters so Ford asked his sister Vale to watch his daughters, and he stole away into the night. Cadence was also in Sterling Falls to attend the wedding of her sister Enya, to Ford’s brother, Sebastian. They both wanted to be alone that night, but when Cadence saw Ford in woman trouble she swooped in to save him from himself. For a big, strong baseball player, Ford’s shy side comes out whenever he is around Cadence. Not that her fame as a country music star made him nervous, it was just that she challenged him, made him laugh and gave his life more meaning. Ford was in over his head with his new role as a single dad, but Cadence’s sweet nature and kind words made him realize that he was doing a good job after all.
Ford is looking for peace and a safe place to raise his girls and Cadence is searching for the family she never had and for someone to love her for who she really was. She is a good role model for Ford’s daughters and they quickly latched onto her as she braided their hair, sang her country songs with them and cuddled on the couch. Ford was mesmerized by her beautiful aura as she blended seamlessly into their lives. It was as if an angel with a heavenly voice had appeared to calm his soul and look after his precious daughters. They were brought together by fate, became closer by opening up to one another, and “found their way back to each other when they feared all was lost.”
Cadence & Ford.... (eerily similar to Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce) was a page turner. I loved Ford bumbling his way through single daddy-hood. Cadence is much stronger and saves the day. When he gets hurt, he cannot spoon her... she explains that she is a "Knife & Fork" girl. I will always smile when I finish a meal thinking about this...
“You know, to signal a meal is finished, you slide the knife between the fork tines. That’s how I like to sleep. Face to face, bodies entangled.” I didn’t need to be cradled. I wanted to be cuddled. I wanted to inhale the scent of my partner and feel his heart pulse beneath my hands on his chest.
I liked the premise of the book, but there were issues. This was very obviously a knockoff of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, down to the phone number on the friendship bracelet, but I hope Travis never treats Taylor the way Ford treats Cadence. She deserved so much better. And what is the deal in all of these books about having weeks of non p-in-the-v sex? I don't buy it, not that much physical intimacy for that long without reaching home plate. I would like this series better if everyone didn't waffle back and forth so much.
This was a challenging read. At times it flowed so well and characters were supposedly mature in mid to late thirties and all seemed good. Then it’s like teenagers who can’t communicate properly. Elements of the story I loved especially the interaction with the girls, but overall was a laborious journey.
Idk. It reminded me of Taylor Swift a lot. But I was torn on Ford as he was devastated after wife left him with three little daughters but he could be such a jerk. I just couldn't love him. Is it just me?
I did NOT like Ford. Like, at all. Time and time again he treats her like shit. Goes for the jugular. Fool me once and all that. He didn’t deserve Cadence. Not even a little bit. Cadence is endearing; especially her scenes with the girls. 2.5*needs a better hero*stars!!!!!
Cadence couldn't help but want to rescue the guy in need of a buffer. She just never expected him to end up being...who he is - her sister's soon to be brother in law. Nor did she expect to fall in love with him and his kids. But he is and she did, so now what? If Ford can grovel his way back into her heart, they could have it all.
Ford just wants to be the best dad he can. And it's hard to do that with his schedule. Athletes are on the road far longer than the average parent, so he needs help. Cue his sister in law's sister? Yep, the beautiful woman who rescued him one night. The same beautiful woman his daughters have fallen in love with. Now he has to keep his hands to himself and his heart intact while his songbird slips under his skin with every day that passes.
Single dad, athlete, the sweetest, most loving singer, ever, and sizzling slow burn chemistry. There is absolutely no way I could resist reading this once I read the blurb. This is by far my favorite story and couple of the author's. I can't wait for more Sterling Falls love now!
ARC provided by Wordsmith Publicity for an honest review.
What a marvelous book. New-to-me author that will now be on my auto-buy list. Third book in a series that I will catch up on and start from the beginning, and since there are seven Sylver siblings I am hoping for at least seven books.
Sterling Streak is about two people who are hurting. Who obviously feel a strong attraction to each other, and beyond the attraction even tender and protective, but who each say the exact same thing: I’m never giving my heart up again. One devastating heart-wrenching heart-shattering experience is enough.
Cadence, world-famous country singer, is a woman in charge. Strong, vibrant, loves to perform. And sadly once she steps off stage and the glamourous costumes and makeup and bright blond wig are removed, she’s still performing. She’s really just a girl who loves to sing, a girl who wishes she could meet a boy and find true love, a girl who in the deepest part of her heart just wants to be Caitlin. But that’s unlikely to happen and she’s discarded that dream. The always-disappointing daughter growing up, still treated cruelly by her parents, and the victim of a terrible man who lied and betrayed her. And is now stalking her. All Cadence has is her sister Enya, who is marrying into the Sylver family. They’re close, but have very different lives.
Ford is part of that Sylver family. He’s a successful, famous baseball star, but right now that doesn’t count for much. Just divorced, blind-sighted, betrayed, and left with three little girls. He loves those little girls more than anything, but he has no idea how to be a good father to them, how to get beyond the confusion and hurt and feeling like the last ten years of his life have been a lie. Not to mention his childhood, when the Sylver siblings lost their mother and their father changed into a monster and Ford couldn’t wait to escape. Yes, Ford is strong and masculine, grumpy and short-tempered with that jaw-ticking thing going on, but there is something about him that makes Cadence want to take care of him, to feel in her bones after just a few minutes of watching him that he needs to be taken care of. She doesn’t understand why she feels like she does, but she can’t fight it. She demonstrates that care again, and again, and again, but maybe after yet one more emotion-filled outburst from Ford it’s finally too much; maybe she needs to walk away and stay away. But can she? Will he even come after her?
This story will grab you from the first sentence and keep you frantically listening to the end. The narrators of the audiobook are superstars, too. J. F. Harding, with that little growl in his voice, always sounding a bit breathless and angsty, sorry but not knowing how to express it, becomes Ford. CJ Bloom hits the perfect note (sorry) as Cadence: quirky, stubborn, resilient but scared and afraid – and afraid to show any of that.
Sterling Streak is sweet and swoony and scorching and sometimes very sad, with villains that you can truly hate, little girls you can’t help but love, siblings that are aggravating but have your back. Parts of the story are almost too funny and too cute for words and you won’t be able to hold in your smile: writing “MINE” in mustard on a hot dog sounds pretty corny, but in context it makes you sigh in delight; so do rubber ducks and friendship bracelets. And the emotion? I was so involved in this book that I found myself repeatedly talking to it – Oh no! Stop! Don’t! - especially when Ford is hurt. The many, many baseball references are sometimes subtle and sometimes hit you over the head (or with a bat?) but are all delightful.
Thanks to Home Cooked Books and author L. B. Dunbar for providing an advance listening copy of Sterling Streak. I absolutely loved it. Got to listen to two of my favorite narrators, found a new author, a new series, and suspect this is a book that will be one of my favorite re-listens. I voluntarily leave this review; all opinions are my own.
I loved returning to Sterling Falls to dive into the drama of another Sylver brother. Sterling Streak by L.B. Dunbar is number three in this series of interconnected standalone books. This time we focus on Ford; the major league baseball player, newly divorced, single dad of three. His life is in a tailspin with no sign of stopping. He hasn’t been particularly close to his family in many years, so coming home is another stress for him to endure. Nothing a few shots of tequila can quell – LOL – famous last words.
Ford meets Candace, a country music sweetheart, at a local bar, which seemed like a good place to stop before going home. Candace had the same thoughts. Cue the tequila! They have a meet-cute of sorts. Candace has the upper hand though! Ford is a tad recognizable so he can’t fly under the radar like she sometimes can. Her famous face is well known by many, but Ford is oblivious to who she is. The laughs continue when they end up in town for the same wedding. Their siblings are the ones tying the knot so there will be no avoiding each other now. Every scene in this book is brimming with sexual tension; it's highly addictive!
We are back in town for the nuptials of Sebastian and Enya. You can read all about them in Sterling Heat. Ford would rather be in almost any other place than his brother’s wedding, and Candace has her own struggles with a family she disappointed and feelings of guilt. These two had a pull that they didn’t know was there until it kept sneaking up on them. That was kind of what I loved most about them. Until now, they were strangers, but they each saw something they didn’t even know they wanted when they looked at the other.
Things don’t go smoothly for this couple. Time passes, and life goes on, but that little spark that ignited when they met grew more and more every time their paths crossed. Their banter keeps them both on their toes and keeps the fire simmering. Each passing glance stokes that fire. Playing house for the summer becomes all too real, and just when it looks like nothing could break them apart, fear and stress cause regrettable words to be said and actions to be done, breaking their trust and tearing them apart.
They really captured my heart; it sunk to the depths of sadness at this turn of events, and I just couldn’t put this book down until all the miscommunication and trust issues were solved. Ford and Candace may just be one of my favourite Sterling Falls couples – until the next book of course.
"Sterling Streak" by L.B. Dunbar is the third installment in the Sterling Falls series, chronicling the journey of Ford Sylver, the center fielder for the Chicago Anchors baseball team, and Caitlin “Cadence” Calloway, a renowned country singer. Their encounter unfolds one night at a bar, where Cadence comes to Ford's aid after he drank a bit too much. Things take a surprising turn when Ford realizes the next day that Cadence is the sister of his brother Sebastian's fiancée, and they are both in town for Sebastian's wedding.
Tropes: ⚾️Small-town romance ⚾️Prodigal son returns ⚾️ Baseball single dad ⚾️ Famous Country singer ⚾️ Unlikely roommates ⚾️ Forced Poximity ⚾️ Little bit of suspense
4.5⭐️ | 2.5 🌶️
“Don’t run away from me, Caitlin. If you need to run, run to me. Let me be your safe place. Your home plate.”
Recently divorced due to his wife's infidelity with a teammate, Ford is now a single father to three wonderful daughters, as his ex not only abandoned him but also their children. Balancing the demands of being a baseball dad with his rigorous schedule becomes even more challenging after an injury, prompting Ford to return to Sterling Falls for family support during his recovery. Coincidentally, Cadence seeks refuge in the town to escape her tumultuous past with her ex, leading her to become Ford's nanny.
Despite sharing a kiss at Sebastian's wedding, Ford opts to focus on providing a stable environment for his daughters, though the tension between him and Cadence remains palpable. Both struggle with trust and the prospect of finding love again after being hurt in the past. Their relationship takes a decisive turn one day, blurring the lines between friendship and romance irreversibly.
“We circled one another each day, and I skirted the issue at hand. I wanted to be more than friends with her.”
This book stands out as my favorite among the three I've read so far. Having been an ARC reader for all installments, I find Ford and Cadence’s story particularly captivating. The maturity of the characters, aged 30 and above, adds depth to their emotional journey. Despite their respective baggage from previous relationships, they find solace and companionship in each other. Cadence's unexpected bond with Ford's children, despite her initial reluctance, adds a heartwarming touch to the narrative. Ford's personal growth, especially in reconciling with his troubled family history, is commendable.
“We accepted that love sometimes has field errors, like a dropped ball or a missed hit, but together we could play the game any way we wished.”
The slow-burning romance builds anticipation, while intimate moments reveal Ford's dominant side and add steam to their connection. The theme of family support is prominent in Ford's life, whereas Cadence finds acceptance and love within Ford's family circle. In conclusion, I highly recommend this series for its compelling character development, engaging storyline, and poignant exploration of familial bonds. If you're a fan of mature characters navigating the complexities of small-town romance, this series is a must-read. I eagerly await L.B. Dunbar's next installment focusing on another sibling's story.

Sterling Streak is book three in the Sterling Falls series and is the pro baseball player, famous country singer, single girl dad, prodigal son returns, unlikely roommates, forced proximity, small town romance of Ford and Cadence. Cadence is in town for her sister’s wedding and being the darling of country music at the height of her career she is glad of the break. Stopping off at a bar on her way into town, Cadence jumps to the rescue of the hot guy at the bar from a bevy if women admirers and they end up spending the night together. The next day when she arrives at her sister’s she is shocked to come face to face with Ford, the guy from last night and comes to realise he is her sister’s soon to be brother-in-law and a single dad to three daughters. Cadence is immediately smitten with Ford’s daughters, and when they both decide to stay in Sterling Falls, they have the opportunity to build something away from the spotlight. And even though Ford does his utmost to push her away due to insecurities that run deep and his injury, Cadence keeps showing up for him and his girls. Single girl dad Ford wants nothing more than to be the best dad he can be which isn’t easy due to his busy schedule and as pro athletes travel much more than the average parent, Ford needs help. Heading home to Sterling Falls for his brothers wedding and having his entire family around gives him the opportunity to head to the pub, meet a hot woman, and have a one-night stand, only the next day she walks into a party being thrown by the bride and groom to be and it becomes clear she’s the bride’s sister. More than that, his daughters are starstruck by her and he learns she is the darling of country music at the pique of her career. Ford does everything he can to keep her at arm’s length, however, an injury see’s him staying on in Sterling Falls and finally letting Cadence not only in his, but also his heart, and opening his children to someone new. The fantastically talented CJ Bloom and J.F. Harding take L.B. Dunbar’s words from page to audio, and what an incredible job they do. Ms Bloom’s performance as the country singing superstar who heads home for a wedding and ends up not only finding herself a ready-made family but also makes some big career decisions that change her life was sensational. Mr Harding’s portrayal of the pro ball playing, single girl dad, whose trip home for a wedding has him falling for the sister of the bride who happens to be a country singing superstar was simply brilliant. In summation, I loved this audiobook. I’m a sucker for a single dad romance and this title from the talented L.B. Dunbar gave me everything I wanted and so much more. From the storyline to the characters and the side characters, everything came together perfectly and had captivated from start to finish.
It was great to be back in Dunbar’s Sterling Falls. I’m enjoying this series and the Sylver family. This time it’s Ford up to bat (sorry, couldn’t resist!), a divorced single dad who’s approaching the end of his baseball career. In many ways he doesn’t want to be, but he loves his 3 girls, and wants to be there more as they grow, something his career makes difficult. An injury and friction with a teammate don’t help matters. There’s also family tension, so the night he arrives in town for brother Sebastian’s wedding, he slips out for a minute to breathe and meets Cadence. She’s not only sister to the bride, but also a country music superstar dealing with her own case of heartbreak and professional tribulations. What follows is a push-pull that builds to a lovely connection between two people who need to relearn how to trust so they can love - and not just each other. Dunbar built effective tension throughout, but also crafted enjoyable moments of them just being together and lots of great chemistry. All in all, I just really liked their story.
The secondaries here are still top notch. Just love this family! Obviously the Sylver siblings are great, whether they’ve found their match or are still looking. (I am particularly looking forward to Judd’s story! And Vale’s, too!) But Ford’s daughters, his darling ducklings, were just so wonderful, too. My heart broke for them, given their mother’s behavior, but seeing how Ford was as a dad -learning his way and trying so hard for them-put it back together. And Cay-Day was just a great addition to their little flock.
Book 3 is another excellent audiobook. I just adore C.J Bloom so much and she was a fantastic Cadence. The way she portrayed both the confidence and vulnerability of the character, was just really impressive. She’s also great at humor, and Cadence did have e some fun moments. J.F. Harding as Ford was equally wonderful. Poor Ford was going through it throughout the book, but he also had his gentleness with his girls; Harding was able to portray both the gruffness and the sweetness of the character. And of course the sexiness! Overall, I loved every minute of the narrator performances. Not only did they fit Dunbar’s characters, but they worked really well together.
This one is absolutely worth a listen and I look forward to the hearing the next Sylver meet their matcH!
I received an ALC copy of the audiobook via Home Cooked Books and read via KU. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
Sterling Streak Sterling Falls, Book 3 By: LB Dunbar Narrated by J.F. Harding, CJ Bloom
L.B Dunbar pens another wonderful novel set in her “Sterling Falls” series, a captivating romance between a professional baseball player, single dad and a country music star. I found it refreshing that this book focuses on mature characters who are already established in their lives. Ford is a single dad of three young daughters and plays centerfield for the Chicago Anchors with three years left on his contract. Cadence/Caitlin is a successful and well-known country artist and her sister is marrying Ford’s brother, but the two meet for that, when he was drinking away his sorrows to the point of oblivion and she stayed with him to make sure he would be alright, but he remembers little of that night. Both these characters are dealing with their own demons, she has made a mistake getting involved with the wrong person and he is struggling to get past his wife’s infidelity, while trying to raise his three daughters. Ford and Caitlin hit is off and she is even great with his children, but he has serious trust issues and it does not take him much to fly off the handle and jump to conclusions, being his own worst enemy. I thought these two were great together and for each other, the chemistry between them was electric and smoking hot. I loved how everything played out in this book, it is a wonderfully plotted story with lots of layers and the complexity and depth of the characters is remarkable. The story has the perfect balance of drama, relationship, family and workplace, heartfelt emotions, romance and some charming moments. L.B. Dunbar, thank you for another wonderful story and emotional rollercoaster ride.
🎧📚🎧 J.F. Harding and CJ Bloom are wonderfully talented voice artists and they did an amazing job bringing these characters to life and understood who they were portraying. I loved how they took each role and made it their own, grasping every aspect of their character’s personality, sounding believable and just as I imagined they would sound. They set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the characters’ emotions and had you feeling them all. These entertaining storytellers are a pleasure to listen to and their performance elevates this already fabulous story to another level. Thank you for another exceptional listen.
