This is my first book that I've read by Mandalyn Kaye aka Neesa Hart and it fulfilled my expectations with a hero and heroine that had depth and a complex setting that helped to keep the pace of the story interesting. It is 1817 Scotland and you meet the heroine, Arren Grayland, immediately. Running with fear. On page two the hero, Duncan MacCraig, is taking off after her. Their adventure begins.

Secrets, awesome attraction between the two main characters, evil enemies, and action. Mix all four of these elements and you get THE PROMISE: Duncan's word that he will see Aaren to London and 'safety'. Without giving away too much of the plot, Duncan makes the story exceptional. He talks to Aaren. Oh sure, they have their own misconceptions, Aaren has a few mild TTSL moments but nothing Duncan can't fix. Probably my pet peeves were a little too much crying and Aaren's weird ability to fall asleep anywhere, anytime.

What I loved about the story is Duncan never gave up on Aaren. From the Scottish Highlands, to the Atlantic Ocean, over tall cliffs to a farmer's cart ride, they suffer from their own smells, blisters, exhaustion and headaches. But their secrets keep driving them to continue on and not give up.

The romance builds, there is some steamy sex eventually and love happens. Do you ever wonder after you finish a romance whether the hero and heroine will be together in 50 years? Well, you don't need to worry about these two. This is just another reason why you shouldn't overlook little-known authors or older books. Closer to 4.5 stars this romance adventure is a keeper.

An important note: though written first, this is the SECOND book in a trilogy. I made the mistake of reading this book first and it would have helped to understand many of the characters if I read BEYOND ALL MEASURE first. The conclusion to this trilogy is A MATTER OF HONOR. Because they were written in the mid-1990's you will want to have on hand all three books before starting this group of connected stories.

**Update** I read the first book and though it introduced characters found in this story, I did not care for it nearly as much. Skip it.**

years ago, a few friends and I used to trade grocery bags full of romance novels of questionable quality. This is the only one I kept, and maybe every five years I decide to read it again in the middle of the night and wonder about my life choices.
