Hi there I'm Matt and I'm the author of the COMPTON VALANCE series, ALIENS INVADED MY TALENT SHOW and the creator of THE WORD MONKEYS podcast.

Compton Valance is a boy who accidentally creates a time machine and does things like wipe out the dinosaurs with a packet of biscuits and turn his dad into a woman. It's funny and totally gross so you'll LOVE IT! ;)

The second book, COMPTON VALANCE: THE TIME TRAVELLING SANDWICH BITES BACK was published in OCT 2014.

An enjoyable halloween themed romp with vampires and witches and dragons oh my.

I enjoyed the world of Grackelser Odd. I enjoyed the conflict. I enjoyed the humour. I enjoyed the artwork.

The main problem was that the plot took too long to get going.

My 8yo son really enjoyed it.

Qué libros tan divertidos, bien escritos y bien traducidos.

Vampires, dragons, draffins, a human girl, The Danger Dive of Death and a wicked witch.”
I haven't read the first book so I can confirm this is ok as a standalone.

Kevin the Vampire (age nearly 11) and his family lead Carnival Monstromo, in this they are travelling the road on the way to the Festival of Fear. Kevin is going to be allowed to ride Brannie, their dragon (she pulls the carriage with Gerald the Draffin) in the parade. Kevin wants this to be the year that Carnival Monstromo win the Carnival of the Year, by doing the Danger Dive of Death!

He is joined in the family carriage by his friend Susie Cabbage, she is in the carriage with Dog (who isn't a dog but they have no idea what she is). Susie isn't happy because Kevin's mum gave her a horrid scratchy dress to wear while they washed her clothes. But in order to get to Monstros City in time for the parade, they need to go through the Wild Woods, home of Grayvon Fury - the most wicked witch in the area.
Anyone that takes anything from the Wild Woods will be taken by her to live there forever. So Kevin, Susie and Kevin's brother and sister must stay inside. But unknown to them, Dog gets out and eats something...

There are other mysteries....why don't Uncle Drax and Lazarus Vandross speak to each other?
What are Kevin's parents taking about when they say that "Susie won't fit in"? She thinks she understands but does she?

Really nice story with lots of interest. Stunning illustrations add to the story.
Thanks to Nosy Crow for this copy.

Having read Kevin the Vampire, I was keen to see where Matt Brown took his lead characters and it didn’t disappoint.
This adventure sees Kevin, along with the Carnival Monstromo heading to Monstros City to take part in the Dragon Parade. Joined by best friend Susie Cabbage, who he met in the first book and who now lives with Kevin and his family, they embark on an unexpected journey that sees them both perform some pretty amazing tricks, mainly the Danger Dive of Death, whilst uncovering the truth about Uncle Drax’s falling out with Lazarus Vandross. Not to mention, with the help of The Sphinx, finishing off Grayvon Fury, the most evil witch.
The book sees the return of some of the magical monstrous creatures from the first book, with a few more characters thrown in. Matt’s talent for creating humourous characters and fun storytelling, transports the reader to a whole new world, supported by the most fun illustrations from the talented Flavia Sorrentino.
It’s fun, sometimes slap-stick humour, creates a world where monsters are colourful, hilarious and a little bit bonkers.
It’s a fabulous middle grade read, that is sure to draw in monster lovers, as well as the most reluctant readers.

Thank you to Net Galley and Nosy Crow for the opportunity to read Kevin the Vampire:A wild and wicked witch prior to its release.

Children around 7+ years will absolutely love this book.

Coming straight off the back of Book 1, this sequel takes Kevin and his new human friend, Susie, on a journey into the lion’s den - Monstro City - where they will be taking part in the famous Dragon’s Parade.

The characters are silly and fun, even the villains. There is mild jeopardy, adventure and lots of narrative asides to keep the tone light and the pace fast. The wonderful illustrations by Flavia Sorrentino help to bring the story alive.

This was loads of fun. Kevin and his family go to the biggest and best carnival around, but things don’t quite go his way. With evil witches, time mists and centuries old arguments afoot, will the carnival ever start? I love all the illustrations and the messages about being yourself and letting others be authentically themselves too!
