The House of Dead Roses offers murder, espionage, and mayhem to the highest bidder. Agent Harmony Black's war against the infernal cult -- and their seductive, sadistic mistress, the demoness Nadine -- last found her facing off against Nadine's top assassin under the glittering lights of Las Vegas, a battle that left her physically and psychically scarred. Harmony has no time to heal. Now she's in the Windy City with a new enemy in her the Roses' "mastermind," a poker-champion prodigy with a mind like a steel trap and a plan for a heist that will fill Nadine's war-chest with an infusion of dirty money. He's putting together a crew for the job and Harmony, along with her best friend and partner Jessie Temple, is going undercover. What seems like a simple takedown soon proves more complicated -- and more deadly -- than anyone bargained for. The target of the heist, a government defense contractor, is keeping secrets of their own. The prize at stake has global consequences. And as Harmony's occult powers continue to mutate, tainted and twisted by Nadine's curse, she's going to have to push herself harder, go further, and delve deeper into her own darkness than she ever has before. Harmony and Nadine are on a collision course. This time, only one of them is going to walk away.
Craig Schaefer's books have taken readers to the seamy edge of a criminal underworld drenched in shadow (the Daniel Faust series), to a world torn by war, poison and witchcraft (the Revanche Cycle), and across a modern America mired in occult mysteries and a conspiracy of lies (the Harmony Black series).
Despite this, people say he's strangely normal. Suspiciously normal, in fact. His home on the Web is www.craigschaeferbooks.com.
The time hath finally cometh for me to give my old nemesis friend Harmony a 5-star rating. Shock! Dismay! Discombobulation!
What the shrimp happened, you ask? Well, as someone recently pointed out (👋 waves at Fiona 👋), the more dear Harmony compromises her morals and channels her inner violent bitch bad girl, the more she aligns with my own values what I've wanted her character to be since day one. Meek, goody two-shoes Harmony is no more, long live somewhat homicidal badass Harmony of the wonderfully fished-up principles!
Hey thanks for the support, you, um, thing!
Oh, and in case you were wondering, there's a lot more to this book than Little Harmony finally becoming the MC she was always meant to be (better take a deep breath, Super Extra Long Sentence—SELS™—incoming):
We've got a heist that is one hell of a roller-coaster ride, we've got blood, we've got a beautifully deranged cast of characters, we've got yum ewwww, we've got violence, we've got creepy stuff, we've got one of the most scrumptious body counts in recent history (everybody dies! 🤗🤗), we've got hahahahaa (thanks, Jessie), we've got a Super Extra Shady Tinkerbell (SEST™), we've got spoiler spoiler spoiler (and also spoiler spoiler spoiler), we've got a harbinger of death (no, it's not who you think), we've got knife shoes (we sure ain't in Kansas no more, Toto), we've got one of the most delightful (if certifiably batshit crazy) villains ever, we've got my boyfriend Daniel Faust'sThe Guy's Hemi Cuda (coolest car ever if you ask me), we've got bloody-shrimping-hell-of-the-stinking-fish-I-sure-didn't-see-that-one coming, we've got a Taylor Swift look-alike in a pretty pickle (muahahahahaha) and last but certainly not least, we've got Harmony 2.0 4.0 coming right up (if you know, you know. And if you don't well that's just too bad for you).
Need I say more? Didn't think so. And now I think it's time to dance.
There is a slight chance that this might possibly be the best installment in the series so far. And that I have seen the light about Harmony at long last and realized that her character is bloody shrimping cool indeed.
Oh come on, no need to overdo it, it's not like it took me ages to finally like Harmony. I mean, it's only been 7 years since I first met her 😬.
➽ Review to come and stuff.
[November 2023]
Finally, Jessie Harmony is coming back next week!!!
P.S. There is no doubt in my mind that this will be the installment that will make me fall in complete and utter lurve with Harmony. And that, after reading it, I will no longer wish that Jessie were the MC for this series. Absolutely no doubt whatsoever. Nope nope nope. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Jessie let out a heavy sigh. She walked over and put a firm hand on Harmony's shoulder. "You know that scene in every cop show where the chief is all, 'You're too close to this case! You're in too deep! Now hand over your badge and your gun?'" "Yeah...?" Harmony said. "See, I hate that. It never made any sense to me. I get the best results when I take shit incredibly personally, and I think my sheer petty vindictiveness should be a shining example for the rest of you."
Jessie, you are the absolute best, and always right. Always. And it's just as well, because things here are getting incredibly personal, and it's going to take the best work of the whole team to get them through the plot twists Ms Schaefer sends their way (still not over the hammer in the last book!).
If you're new to this series, you'll have a whole lot more context by going back to the start, but this actually stands alone pretty well. Some of the basics are just good, and when it comes to heists, no-one writes something as satisfying as this author. Harmony, despite everything she's been through, somehow still has that kernel of hope at the core that makes her so special. She is, though, starting to realise that there's appropriate times to open the whoop-ass can, which was badly needed.
There's also an adorable big-spoon, little-spoon moment for those of us who need a good cosy moment in amongst the existential dread and monsters trying to eat everyone's face.
Love this series, and can't wait to see where we're going next.
Ah, finally! Another fix of Schaefer's unique blend of pulp, noir, heist, and urban fantasy. As a die-hard fan of all of Schaefer's series (they're linked), I had a great time reading this one. It's violent, fast-paced, pulpy in a good way, and ends with a curious development for Harmony. Now, I need another Faust novel :)
A heist story that stands quite alone on its own, though at the ending it hints of possible consequences regarding Schaefer's shared universe. As usual with the series, the focus is on a riveting plot, but the characters grow alongside the story, adapting to the circumstances the author throws at them. With this novel, Harmony along with her partner has entered into the sinister cosmic spanning game that's at the forefront of Faust novels.
The intriguing element in this novel is the change that happens within Harmony and her magical powers, and how she grappler with that and comes into terms with it. Her partner Jessie is a stoic support for her and their dynamics work so well that I'm ready to ship them as a badass couple battle otherworldly threats. The demoness Nadine has her fingers in almost every pie, but the reckoning too was impressive. How it will figure out in the next big game is of course another question, but things are definitely gonna change in Harmony's world.
This is a solid 3 star novel, but not Schafer 's best. I still consider the Wisdom's Grave trilogy to be the best work of the author so far. I'm quite invested in the fantasy world Schaefer is creating and would love to get my hands on the next Daniel Faust As soon as possible.
Another action packed installment of Harmony and Jessie's adventures with incarnate demons and people/beings from parallel worlds. Craig Schaefer's books are a twisty, gritty time and I'm so happy he's cranking out more.
Harmony Black and Jessie have a plan to finally take down Nadine. And they need to join a heist crew to get close enough to get her. But everyone else on the crew is a psychopath. Who knows how this will turn out.
Schaefer has a particular niche and fills it expertly, consistently delivering a deliciously pulpy adventure filled with magic, mayhem, and malevolent elder gods lurking in the margins. Beyond the series and its sisters "just" building a vast interconnected universe that coherently weaves together an array of characters and plots across a dozen odd novels, the just-right gradation of power scaling is little short of miraculous. The book's climax makes clear just how far Harmony, the series' protagonist, has come since book one, but every inch of that progression has felt earned and doesn't at all lighten the suspense at the challenges foreshadowed that lie yet ahead. Looking forward, as ever, to the next one!
OVERVIEW/ANALYISIS: Oh boy, I’ve been waiting for Never Send Roses for a good long while. Ever since we got that slam bang of an ending in Black Tie Required, I’ve been waiting to see what Harmony does and how she deals with the trauma she experienced. The hunger she’s been hiding as well as her magic becoming different than what she knows. This book couldn’t come any soon for me. For readers, be forewarned, this is the seventh book in the series and there’s no way you can jump into this as a fresh reader.
The plot picks immediately after the events of Black Tie Required as we meet Harmony, Jesse and their rest of the team as they are finally in the driver’s position. Having finally understood how to take down Nadine, the team get cracking on their plan. However things are never straightforward and soon enough Jesse and Harmony have to take part in a heist under the leadership of a brilliant poker player (whom readers might recognize from A PlainDealing Villain the fourth Daniel Faust volume). An already complicated plan becomes tenuous with the addition of several new players and that might not be the only thing. The thing that they have to steal might be the ultimate Pandora’s box in a way that’s Craig Schaefer’s readers will get a dark chuckle out of. This is how the magnificent story explodes and you will have to read the rest to see how Heather’s brilliant plotting works.
Never Send Roses is another fine thriller and a particularly action-packed entry in the Harmony Black series. Once again Heather Schaefer brilliantly combines a heist plot within a Die Hard like scenario & to add to it, there’s the threat of murderous zombies. There’s so many angles to this plot that it’s hard to keep track of who’s trying to hoodwink/betray whom (in a good way). The characterization is strong as ever as we get several characters in various shades of black & grey, Heather has a thing for showcasing character complexity and here we get some hate worthy villains & some intriguing anti-villains.
The ending is action-packed and again gives us enough of a tease about what might come next. There’s enough twists and revelations packed in this volume to keep a fan like me sated but there biggest twist was the one that was teased since the past couple of books. All I can say about it is that it completely blew my mind and now forces me to re-evaluate all that has happened. Because one thing is for sure, Heather plans out things in advance and even the smallest occurrences have reasons. This revelation also throws a special twist in the whole Paladin angle and now the wait is on for the next Daniel Faust title for more light on the whole Paladin-Enemy conflict. The book also has a good dose of dark humour with Jessie and that’s a bit par for the course. The ending also sets up an intriguing Hannibal Lecter- Clarice like scenario and I for one am intrigued to see what the author has planned for the future. The cover is also top-notch and continues the trend from the past few books in marking itself out as a snazzy, eye-catching one.
With regards to any fallbacks within this story, there’s an episodic element to these stories and so that comes with its limitations. There’s always something left for the future books and that can be a tad frustrating at times (that’s not really a complaint urban fantasy readers have most of the time). Not getting a clear answer to the whole Enemy-Paladin is also frustrating. It’s been building up over the past few books in the Daniel Faust and Harmony Black books and I was hoping we would get movement on that aspect of the overall storyline but that’s not the case. I want to make it clear that this is a personal observation and not something that other readers might care about. Besides these couple of small issues, there’s nothing else that would stop anyone from enjoying this book to the max.
CONCLUSION: Never Send Roses promised a lot and it delivered on almost all counts. Heather Schaefer has managed to create a fascinating character in Harmony Black and by creating this series, given us a fascinating action thriller saga to follow. Never Send Roses has action, plot twists and betrayals mixed in with zombies, making it another home run and highlighting what an awesome series this is. Kudos to Heather (and apologies), as I can’t wait for the sequel to this and the next Daniel Faust title.
Title: Never Send Roses (Harmony Black Book 7) Author: Craig Schaefer
Rating: 5/5
Pages: 359
Another book by Mr Schaefer. His books give me a warm welcome home. Familiar characters. A best friend that sucks you into a grimey urban fantasy world. I've been hooked with the Faust and black series since day dot, and I always look forward to his next release.
This book is available via Kindle Unlimited, and @amazonuk is still offering 2 months free trial. (Can be found with a quick google search)
Never Send Roses did not disappoint.
I really liked the catch-up before we delved into the story. Reminding us what happened previously.
The twist and turns of the story had me guessing who was double crossing who. Harmony's character development shifts and can see her grappling with the changes and challenges, making for a very interesting read and build-up for book 8 thanks to an interesting plot twist. I can't wait to see the development between Harmony and Nadine and where it goes next.
Although not one of THE best books, it's still 5 stars. There was grime, violence, and swagger, and the story kept my interest. As always, I couldn't put the book down. Jessie was as bad ass as always, and the character shifts between the two partners was interesting.
I can't wait for the next instalment.
Have you read this book or series? Will you give it a go? What's your favourite urban fantasy book at the moment?
The fact that it's Thursday and I'm not finished with the latest Craig may surprise you. (I only started reading it in two places last night. 😅)
Anyway, if you like a book that has one long focus point with little in the way of distractions (a little like a haunted house)—or are simply determined to read every book by this author—this one is for you.
If you prefer a book where the plot is lively and gives you lots to think about (like Black Tie Required), you might find this book frustrating. (I never thought I'd miss Kevin and April's presence, but here we are!)
There are a few interesting revelations here and there (including a major one when I flipped to the end), but when I'm more than 75% of the way through the book and feeling like it lacks Craig's usual pizzazz (it took until chapter thirty-two to get to her standard gross outs, for Pete's sake!), it's not her best work.
(Yes, I like muddling her pen name with her real life pronouns. It's fun that way! 😂)
I think I need to go back and re-read Down Among the Dead Men. Primarily because I miss Daniel, but also because apparently I finished reading it and cursed with surprise and joy. ("...chicken tender, damn"? Hahaha, okay!) And it could be another six months or more before Dig Two Graves is done.
I'm a fan of the Faust series and have enjoyed the Harmony Black books, but this was weak. It felt like the author was just going through the motions. When someone takes the time to.describe the Chicago "Bean" in the exact same terms more than once its lazy.
When the animating event for one of the most.powerful freedom earth is the need to recoup $5 million (which should be chump.change to.the head of the Dead Roses its lazy.
When the heroes' cunning plan is to join their arch enemy's heist crew, even though they are almost certainly going to be recognized its lazy.
When we are reminded over and over and over again that Harmony and Jennifer are best friends and partners its lazy.
When Jennifer offers to show someone "what a real monster looks like" (including Harmony us mother, for some reason) its lazy.
Worst of all, changing from.an interesting, underpowered, scrappy underdog to an overpowered Mary Sue is the height of laziness. Add some cringe worthy dialogue and you have the recipe for an eminently skippable entry in the Harmony Black series.
Sorry for the low score. This book might have been better than that. But I was waiting through the WHOLE BOOK for the answer to the question of "What's the deal with Harmony?" which was posed as a cliffhanger at the end of book 6. (And I hate cliffhangers!!!)
So what I really wanted from this book was the answer to that question. I impatiently read this book, skimming and skipping at times. And finally, my impatience was rewarded when they told me about Harmony right at the end, and hinted at some other stuff that made me more interested in reading the next book. Which is good because I was going to be SO done with Harmony Black forever (I always liked Daniel Faust better, anyway.) I was REALLY annoyed the entire time I was reading this book.
Please don't do this again, Heather. Thanks. The next Daniel Faust just arrived this morning b/c preordered. It is 2nd my the queue. Goodie!
Well, that was one h*ll of a mission! From start to finish, this was an edge of your seat kind of read. To be completely honest I now feel like re-reading this entire series, so much time had elapsed between books that I kinda forgot about the other characters besides Harmony and Jessie. Kevin and April were barely given anything to do here, but still the story felt RIGHT. Jessie managed to be that protector, BFF, voice of reason that Harmony desperately needed to hear and have at her side. Their friendship and working relationship is the heart of this series and I’m totally here for it all. Kinda wish we got more than a two sentences about what went down at the hospital, during the fight to save daniel’s body before he got exorcised from Hell.
Mr. Schaefer has truly excelled in honing his craft. Reading the latest tale of Harmony Black and then re-reading the first Daniel Faust novel, you see how far this author has grown as a novelist. Now don’t get me wrong, there is nothing better than a shady crooked magician leading a pack of strays out in the Vegas sunshine (and Mr. Schaefer, some of us are still WAITING for the next Faust novel to land) but with his latest Harmony Black story, Schaefer goes all in on his talent… The man is a gifted author and, honestly, there isn’t a book he has written which I haven’t read yet which keeps me spell bound to the end. Great work Mr. Schaefer but please can we have a little Faustian adventure next???
Another fast paced banger. Admittedly, Harmony Black still isn't anywhere close to my favourite Schaefer character. She's still way too neurotic and insecure for the position she inhabits and her constantly switching between high strung professional, angsty mess and stonecold killer gets a bit old. The villains this time around also were a bit cringy even by Schaefer's over-the-top standards, but the high-octane undercover heist plot and the satisfying conclusion make up for that. Nevertheless, I hope Harmony's background and her new powers get a bit more attention throughout the next books in the series.
The wait was worth it. I had to slow down my usual reading pace to make sure I picked up everything that was laid out before me. What a great ride! Plenty of harmony action with all the characters you know and love. Plus a twist or two as is expected in a Craig Schaefer novel. Now I get to wait for the next one!!!
I love this series. This one continues the trend of being a captivating read- I couldn’t put it down. After Black Tie Required I’ve been dying to know the answer to the cliffhanger. And now that we have it I only want more. Another great book, I am already hungry for the next!
I used to read a lot of paranormal books, but I don't much anymore except this one. I love Harmony and Jesse. Their friendship/partnership is the best thing about these books. I couldn't put the book down but at the same time wanted to put it down so it would last longer. I'm bummed it's over for now. Can't wait for the next one.
I don’t know why I enjoy these books, but I just do ! I am not a fan of horror, but somehow found this tale deliciously gruesome. It must be that the writing draws you in and keeps you there, or maybe because the characters are so interesting , or perhaps because the escapism is just plain fun ! Thanks Heather for a ripping yarn , entertaining absorbing and refreshing .
Another solid ride with Harmony and Jessie! And finally the payoff that we've been waiting for since Black Tie Required, if not Right to the Kill. Righteous, and very on-brand.
This marks two years in a row of my first completed book in the new year being a Schaefer release. I don’t mind this trend.
Another solid entry into Harmony Black series. Harmony and her friend go undercover to take part in the heist organized by 'demon incarnate' Nadine. They manage to capture Nadine in the end, in the process saving humanity from deadly machinations of mad scientist. The ending clearly indicates that we are not done with either Nadine or the danger of mad scientist experiments.
This is another one of Craig Schaefer's pieces of art. I've read several of his books and the entire Harmony Black series. His parallel world with demons, witches, and houses of the damned never disappoints. The stories are rich with colorful characters and scenarios worthy of great mystery and thrill seekers.
This series just gets better and better. Every book has a little bit higher stakes than the last one, a little more emotional heft, and another fun and twisted heist. I’m really enjoying the ride
You would think she earned a well deserved vacation after the last mission. But we all know by now that's not how Harmony and Jesse roll. Buckle up for another wild ride.
What a riveting read from the very beginning to the climax. Having read the continuing stories that are being written by Craig Schaefer I’m always eager to experience this authors next creation
Harmony Black is my favorite character in Craig Schaefer’s books. She is always changing and in spite of all the gruesome missions she always comes out ready for the next one. This book is exciting and kept me anxiously turning the page!
This was a fun addition to the Harmony Black series. I enjoyed learning more about how Nadine affected Harmony and how her power is manifesting. The cliff hanger was interesting and I can't wait to find out more.
3.5 ☆ I don't know what to say. I expected something else. Well, foolish me. The not-quite 4 stars are because this mission was different. I don't care for Nadine either :/ Still intrigued for what comes next.
Good action and character moments, but both the showdown with Nadine and the resolution of the cliffhanger from Black Tie Required could have used more on page time.
