4.5 🌟 rounded up!

I want to preface by mentioning the half star taken off is mainly because of the setting. A large part of the story takes place in a tavern, which is something I particularly do not enjoy. I simply tried to imagine they were only in an inn, in which the relationships and connections made in said inn were so meaningful.

More Than Life follows the life of a young woman dealing with grief after her father’s untimely death. She was also once of high society, who was suddenly cast out to the working class, who had to find her new way of life while still grappling with her grief. There is a good bit of character development and story building leading up to the world building, which I quite enjoyed. This is not merely a grappling adventure, but it focuses on Cordelia's ongoing grief, which is something I do not typically see in fantasy novels. Main characters are expected to push their pain aside, but we see such a shift in this story. Such a real emotion delved into. An emotion not many can describe, yet the author does it so poignantly.

We also follow the story of the mysterious Jaspar, a man who seems to be forgotten by everyone, until he is blessed by someone. We see his mission, his trials and tribulations, and his emotions when he finds something far greater than he was previously searching for.

With the two coming together, they collided in ways I did not expect. There is heartbreak. And tragedy and loss. Yet there is new and uncovered love forged from that pain, which makes the love ever so strong. The author’s description of the world she created made me feel I was sitting alongside Cordelia, like I could feel the ocean spray on a ship’s deck. The emotions are so eloquently described that I felt moved and teared up with the pain the characters faced.

The story and its ending will have you attached to every character, questioning every move and revelation, and make you want to come back for more. (book 2 please)

I read an ARC of this and it is fabulous! Elemental-style magic, a mythical lost island, a slow-burn love story, and an ending that will have you grabbing for book two--More Than Life is a must read!

Secrets and false identities. Lies and betrayals. Grief and love. Hope and found families. Magic and mystery. More Than Life delivers so much.

I’m in love with the relationship we get to see between Cordelia and Jasper. It feels so natural and realistic and I just love their teasing and sweet dynamic.

Bethanie’s representation of grief is so spot on and I love how all the characters handled not only their own grief and also helped others through theirs.

More Than Life is a bit more of a laid back story focusing a lot on relationships, but still delivers an interesting world and magic.
I loved getting to see an almost Slice of Life type story that still delivers what I look for in a good fantasy novel.

The ending has left me stunned and I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do until the next book comes out. I am so excited to see where this story goes especially because I believe it will only get more action packed from here!

As always when I read a good book I wish I could describe how much I loved it without spoiling the whole thing!

Setting up for a trilogy of adventure, romance, and magic! Cordelia is resilient and a great main character. The rest of the cast are so fun, creating up a found family that pulls at your heart strings. The romance between Cordelia and Jaspar made me melt. Chapter 82 lives rent free in my head 😭✋ (Chapters are so short which is a HUGE bonus for me. I love short chapters!)

I wish the there would have been more magical elements earlier in the story, as the first half of the book is mostly Cordelia adapting to her life as a working woman.
That said, as this is the first of a trilogy, I’m so excited to see the adventures we will embark on soon!

We got magic, mystery, friends to lovers, found family, and a very intriguing world, so of course I loved it!

This was the first book in a while for me that was so incredibly hard to put down! The layers to the story and interesting/unique set up are an adventure from start to finish. Also, the descriptions of grief and love experienced through each pov was so well done, I really feel as though I’m looking through Cordelia & Jaspar’s eyes. Thank you Bethanie for putting out this amazing tale! Brb gotta start the sequel asap

More Than Life is a sweeping tale of romance, fated soulmates, family curses, and dealing with loss and grief. The story opens with quite the gut-punch for the main character, which immediately invested me in the story. I enjoyed the dual-POV for Cordelia and Jaspar, and loved watching their romance blossom. The adventure vibes pick up in the third act, and I'll admit that I want more. I'm excited to see where the story goes next!

3.5 ⭐ rounded up!

(In order to refrain from spoilers I am going to do my best to be vague but please know that the majority of what prevented the higher star rating is about personal preference and should not be held against the story itself.)

More than Life is a unique combination of magical sea adventure, self discovery, love, and family. Cordelia is a young, intelligent, and willful young woman who experiences heartbreaking loss and instant poverty. What is so exceptional about Cordelia is that she takes it all in stride. She manages to fight through her grief and keep moving regardless of the pain she is feeling.

It is important to note that this book is the first in a trilogy. There is a lot of character building and you don't really hit on the main plot until 3/4 of the way through.

The author is really working to set the stage and build reader investment in the characters so you can join them on their journey in the next two books.

When you get into the main plot things start to happen quickly! You get pulled in and you really can't wait to see what happens next! So if you're patient, keep going!

Now a few notes, which again I want to preface as primarily being personal preference.

- I 100% enjoy character and world building, but we did have to go through quite a lot of it before reconnecting with the main plot.

- there are several character types that I feel are important to the world, but there isn't much backstory in the first book so at times you may not know what the author is referencing, but this does all feel like it's going to be further explained in the sequel.

- although I truly understand Cordelia's pain at the loss of her father, there was very little about their time together before his death so it was hard to connect. The loss Cordelia felt was so intense it was almost akin to how some describe the loss of a partner. But that also may have just been my own impression and others may receive it differently. I think readers with a similar experience of loss may find this more impactful and connect with it on a deeper level.

- I found it a bit odd that Jasper saw Cordelia at the funeral and at her home, but didn't recognize her at all for several months while they started a relationship. Granted Cordelia was wearing a veil which could make it hard for him to tell for sure, but I always picture veils as a sheer or mesh material and given how closely he was watching her I can't help but think he should have had a bit more suspicion at their next encounter. But that could also just be me looking into it too much. He also seemed a bit nieve at times which felt a little detached from his character.

I feel like there is a large group of readers out there that love this kind of story and knowing that it's a trilogy really helps frame the intent behind the first book.

More Than Life is a 5 star⭐️ for me!
Historical fantasy, pirates, high-class society, sweeping romance, and mistaken identities clash in this adventurous and heartwarming tale.

Right from the beginning, the catalyst of the story takes place. Cordelia gets the message that her beloved father isn't coming back from the seas. As a heroic captain, there is an elaborately portrayed goodbye, which I haven't come across in many books. I have seen glimpses on the news of what such a farewell looks like for high-ranking government officials, but reading about it was something different. Even though you couldn't see the reaction, I could practically feel the various emotions from the attendees. So it hits the emotional string right from the start.

Following the events, Cordelia, who is still grieving, gets thrust into a series of rather heartless events and ends up alone to fend for herself. Fortunately, her staff had already made some arrangements for her at a local bar. This is THE social hub of town, of all places. It's where most of the book takes place and where we meet all kinds of authentic, layered characters.

I have fallen in love with all the characters. But Cordelia and Jaz take centre stage. Jaz, being the captain's apprentice, was tasked to find his daughter and guide her in her life choices. Though through some little mishaps, things have altered his plans. I'd say that the story could have done splendidly without the magic, but with it and the additional mystery of the captain's quests and riddles, it has elevated to story to an immersive and spectacular world!

It is emotionally tender, it is adventurous, humorous, and reflective. I dare you not to fall in love with the ensemble that exemplifies found family. I want to thank the author Bethanie Finger for reaching out to me to read and review a copy of More Than Life. I will definitely dive into the following books asap!

My favourite elements of the book:
- Mistaken identities
- Themes of grieving, character development, and self-discovery.
- Historical setting like Pirates of the Caribbean.
- Unique and original magical system (elemental magic, magical creatures)
- Soulmates
- Found Family
- Riddles, quests, mysteries, legends, and curses.
- Humorous, emotional, mid-level adventure, and slow-burning tender love.

I could yap more about this, but I'm afraid it will look like an intimidating essay, so I'll leave it at this for now. I am happily open for fangirling on bookstagram as booknerd.magic.
Thank you for reading!!!

Okay, wow. This book totally took me by surprise!! 😮 The emotional depth, the exploration of grief, the layered characters, the world-building, and the gorgeous prose made this story unforgettable! 😍

As soon as the story began, I was INSTANTLY hooked. The story opens with the death of her father — a pain written so viscerally that I felt it to my core. I had not realized until the acknowledgments section that Bethanie’s own father had passed away unexpectedly, and this story started as a way for her to come to terms with his death. I’d already felt deeply for the story, but after reading that, I felt like those elements were even more impactful.

This story felt so new and different than most new adult I’ve been reading — it was so refreshing!! It blended historical with fantasy elements and I was 👏🏼 here 👏🏼 for 👏🏼 it. There was adventure and myths and seafaring shenanigans that made this SO fun!! If you like Pirates of the Caribbean, you should definitely pick this one up! Also, the MCs were TOP TEIR!!😍 I loved both their POVs 💖

There was a mystery component throughout that had me guessing, and kept me COMPLETELY intrigued. I wanted to know what the heck was going on haha - who was this strange boy and what did her father not tell her?! I promise, this will keep you HOOKED. And the romance is sweet and swoony! 🥰

There was a slight lull in the middle, but it didn’t last long and there was a serious payoff!! 😍 Just be aware that there’s a cliffhanger at the end that will make you want to pick up the next one immediately! 😉

Book Ratings:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4.5)

Book Review (light spoilers):
This book was so incredibly emotional, but so well written, and had me so invested! This is technically YA but was written for anyone to become completely immersed in and it felt more NA.

Delia losing her father and the sheer grief that she had to learn to deal with was so real and so raw. I feel like most books glaze over it or the FMC is just expected to get over it super quickly, but this was so relatable and real that it was so easy to connect with Delia on.

Jaz having to deal with essentially being unnoticed and forgotten his entire life just broke my heart for him. To have no one and no home…just sob! I absolutely loved getting to watch him grow into someone that finds a home and finds love.

Delia & Jaz together were the truest of slow burns and I wouldn’t trade a second of it. Again, so real and relatable with becoming acquaintances to becoming friends to falling in love. The tender moments, brief touches, and long exchanges made me fall in love with them and root for them.

This ending had me almost in tears…and also like freaking out because this cannot be how it ends for them!!!! I will absolutely be devouring the next book as soon as it comes out.

Thank you for the book Bethanie. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

More Than Life really captured me. I was drawn to the characters immediately, from the very first pages. The emotions, the grief, the joy, and the sense of adventure in the characters are all so pure and authentic, it’s impossible to not get sucked into this world.

The story starts in a naval kingdom just as Lady Cordelia learns her father, the naval captain, has died. Now, not only does she have to deal with the loss of the man she adored, she is tossed from her home and stripped of her title. Suddenly, everything she knows is gone. What Cordelia doesn’t know is that her father had secrets and has left guardians to watch over her, one being a mysterious man named Jaz who is destined to lead Cordelia on an adventure that will reveal her true identity, if of course, she accepts. So much exciting stuff going on!!

More Than Life is thoroughly captivating. From the worldbuilding that is complex without being overbearing, to the subtleties between Cordelia and Jaz as they fall in love, I couldn’t put it down. Characters are rich and authentic and even the minor characters had a grip on my heart.

This is a thrilling series, good for YA audiences as well as adult readers. Loved every minute of it. I won’t rest until I have read the entire series!

*I received an e-copy of the book from the author and publisher for review. Thank you for the opportunity. All thoughts are my own*

More Than Life was such a pleasant surprise, and a compelling read! This story was one of grief and loss, a journey of self-discovery and growth, found family, romance, mystery, adventure, magic, and even some time on the sea! I loved the world building and the magic system that is being set up, and I look forward to learning more in the next book.

Nineteen-year-old Lady Cordelia Kimbal lives a life of luxury in the sea faring kingdom of Mikiria, as the daughter of a high-ranking sea captain. When her father dies unexpectedly, she is forced to give up her home, her servants, and her title and join the working class.

She begins working as a bar maid in a tavern, determined to rise above her losses and prove her worth. She chooses to go by the name Delia. She begins to make friends with her coworkers and patrons in the tavern. She meets an intriguing patron named Jaz, who winds up staying at the inn and helping out at the bar. They begin to develop feelings for one another. Their connection is more than they both realize. Four months after her father’s passing, a mysterious letter arrives at the tavern for Delia. The letter inspires her to embark on a quest to discover a lost island and find out who she truly is.

I absolutely adored Delia and Jaz and thought they were such likeable characters. Delia has gone through so much, but she is so resilient and doesn’t give up. Jaz has also gone through a lot, and I liked how he and Delia help each other through their grief.

I definitely recommend for fans of fantasy and sweet romance! I am eager to read book as soon as I can.

What a splendid book!

Bethanie weaves an emotional, moving tale of loss of a parent which I deeply sympathize. I adore Delia and Jaz - for their resilience and compassion. What amazing characters! Bethanie also weaved a fantastic world - one of my favorite aspects of a solid book. I devoured this novel over the weekend and even stayed up until 2am one evening reading half the book and being irresponsible before a Monday. That’s how excellent this story was written.

I canNOT wait for the next one!!

Where to start with this book? 🤔 I absolutely loved it as simple as that. This book was an amazing beginning to a what is sure to be an amazing trilogy.

The characters were so dynamic and jumped off the page. I felt so badly for the FMC because of her situation at the beginning of the book but I have a good feeling that her strength and will will grow as the story goes on and she will be a force to reckon with. Jaspar was a heartbreaking character as well, but I have a good feeling for his future.

I loved most of all the nautical themes of the book. I am such a sucker for this, and it gives the story such an amazing feel.

I am so excited to see where this story goes. ❤️❤️

Once this story starts, it doesn’t stop. At first I was incredulous as to how the main characters could keep so much from each other but then it all started to make sense and was perfect for the rest of the story! I liked that everything was explained so throughly at the point that it was, and how it changed and shaped Cordelia and Jaspar’s relationship after that. The ending…oh my goodness, I could cry. So excited for the rest of this story!!!

This book is full of so many tender moments. It’s a slower pace that takes some time to really speed up but I loved getting to follow Delia’s journey as a bar maiden and Jaz becoming part of that life.

Speaking of speeding up, the 30% of the book became a jaw-dropping wild ride that leaves you on a pretty big cliff hanger. Cannot wait to read book 2!

A very strong start to both the series and to the authors body of works. There is a TON of world building taking place in the book both in the beginning and then again at the end as she sets up for book two. But the middle sets up a very sweet romance that I loved getting to see develop.

One thing I love about fantasy’s is the world building. Learning about the magic system and its history never gets old to me. The first half of this book spent a little more time on getting to know the main characters with small hints of the magic sprinkled in. It did make it more of a slow burn which I was fine with, but because got pov from Delia and Jaspar it was hard to understand how one of the characters didn’t put two and two together a lot sooner. I was happy the author addressed why after the big reveal. I loved the second half of the book. The adventure, magic and history was easy to follow and by that time I connected more with Delia. I knew it was going to end on a cliffhanger but it made me look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Thank you to the author for the gifted copy

Bethanie Finger was kind enough to drop the Busy Girls Book Club and ARC so we could discuss this with her. I really loved every character in this book. It was a bit slow at times, but that made the time I spent with the characters impactful. The adventure doesn't really pick up until the last third, and then a LOT happened. I'll need a recap before the next book.
