She trusts no one…

Bodyguard Laila Rabbinowitz is all business. Tough and stoic, she was the perfect Mossad agent…until a terrible betrayal led to her worst nightmare. Being a bodyguard with the Elite Guardians allows her to keep her heart safe—she’ll never get involved with a client, never let anyone close enough to betray her again. And she’s certainly not going to trust anyone who doesn’t earn it.

He needs protection…

Billionaire Preston Whittaker walked away from his famous family after a terrible event, but he’s put that behind him—or so he thinks. When his father and brother are killed in a suspicious boating accident, he must take the helm of the family business and carry on the family legacy. But someone doesn’t want him at the helm. They want him dead.

She’ll have to pretend to be his wife to save his life…

Enter the Elite Guardians. Preston is going to need someone by his side 24/7, and the only solution is…a fake marriage. Laila needs to pull off acting as the trophy wife to the country’s most eligible bachelor. With the eyes of the paparazzi on them, she’ll have to convince everyone that she and Preston are in love.

But what will it cost her heart?

Preston’s reputation as a party playboy precedes him, and Laila doesn’t belong in his world filled with parties and money. But is there more to Preston Whittaker that the world doesn’t see? Maybe, in time, he’s someone Laila could learn to trust. Only problem is, the danger is closer than they both know…and time is running out.

Disclosure: I received this book free from the publisher/author. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Characters: Preston and Laila were both interesting, well-developed characters. All the trouble associated with Preston and his family added to the plot, as did Laila's job as an undercover bodyguard.

Language: Clean.

Moral/theme: The most prominent theme in Defending Honor was trusting God instead of self.

Plot: Plenty of suspenseful moments and high stakes kept this plot moving right along.

Romance: Clean. Just kissing. Even though this book contained a fake marriage, it didn't delve into the land of too many details.

Writing: Kelly Underwood's clear writing style worked great for this book.

Overall: Defending Honor was an exciting read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction and romantic suspense. I'm looking forward to reading more by Kelly Underwood in the future.

I've been hitting the jackpot lately. Another 5 star book!!! This reminds me of another book I've read lately (The Bodyguard by Katherine Centers)... male famous and female bodyguard. That one was a romantic comedt. This one is more like a suspense book. But I loved this one as well. This had me hooked with the whole "who did it?" vibe the entire time. Had me gripped on the edge of my seat a few times. I loved every bit of this! The two main characters showed SOOO much growth by the end of the book. I loved how their personalities played off one another. The ending shocked me, and it'll shock you too. Go grab this one right now!

I won this book from a Goodreads giveaway. All statements above are my true opinions after fully reading this book.

I loved the fake marriage set up of this story! It was a great way to throw these two main characters together and force them to get to know each other quickly. At first glance it seemed that Laila and Preston were very different from each other. And they did have their differences, not only in background and upbringings, but also in family connections and faith. Yet the author did a great job of showing that although Preston lived a large portion of his life as part of the wealthy elite, he had made a major change five years earlier and no longer valued the same things in life. And although they had their differences, it was interesting to see some similarities in a few things from their pasts that helped bond them. They simply handled things differently when crises came into their lives.

The author did a good job of creating many possibilities relating to who the villain might be. I was eventually able to figure out who was behind the mayhem, yet the journey and danger these characters faced was still very exciting. The author also did a great job of creating wonderful romantic tension and chemistry between Laila and Preston. Their love and care for each other seemed to grow in a very natural way to me.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

'How many times would he narrowly miss falling into this killer's death grip?'

I have thoroughly been enjoying this series, the extension of Lynette Eason's Elite Guardians. She has teamed up with Kelly Underwood this go round, and they have created a great story. Action abounds as a man's life is constantly being threatened. No place he goes is safe.

Suspects are plentiful. The culprit was a big surprise for me, though, and one I never guessed. Plus, there was an amazing spiritual thread moment that blew my mind. I loved it!

My thanks to the author and publisher for a copy of this book. The opinion in this review is entirely my own.

Thoroughly enjoyed this story. Laila is a Ziva like bodyguard determined not to get close to her client. Then they're forced to masquerade as husband and wife. Filled with read herrings and twists.

Defending Honor by Kelly Underwood and Lynette Eason delivers plenty of suspense with a strong romance thread. The intense action kept me flipping pages and wondering who the killer was until the big reveal. Attraction flickers between Laila and Preston early in the story (and in their fake marriage), but their unfolding romance didn’t carry my interest as much as I expected it to.

My favorite moments in Defending Honor happened when the characters showed vulnerability and talked through their issues. I liked how Preston wrestled with lying (about the fake marriage) to those around him in order to protect himself and his loved ones. Looking through the quotes I marked, I see a pattern of Laila or Preston dropping a great quote at just the right moment. While none of the quotes rated as a main theme or narrative element, they made me smile and keep reading.

Defending Honor by Kelly Underwood and Lynette Eason stands as the third installment in the Elite Guardians Collection. Characters from Eason’s original series (Elite Guardians) and the prior books in this series (Elite Guardians Collection) combine to give Defending Honor a lot of characters to follow. As such, I recommend reading the novels in order. 3.5 Stars.

Oh, this book was so much fun! I've thoroughly enjoyed the original Elite Guardians series and the new Elite Guardians Collection but this book has to be my favorite so far. Kelly Underwood has a gift for weaving intense, nail-biting suspense into an intricately layered plot with characters you'll fall in love with. There were quite a few suspects as the possible villain and the villain actually had a voice in the story, which made the plot all the more interesting. The action was well-paced and there was never a dull moment with Laila and Preston.

Laila seems like such a dichotomous character at the beginning but we learn that she only wants and needs acceptance and unconditional love. Preston is an open book, willing to own up to his past sins and make restitution for them. His solid faith, sole reliance on God, kindness, and tenderness make him an incredibly attractive hero. I loved catching up with the old and newer members of the Elite Guardians.

If you're a fan of romantic suspense, you don't want to miss this book. I received the book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

“That’s just it. You’re fighting battles that aren’t even yours. You’re so busy putting up walls and keeping people out that you’re too tired to fight for the things you want. The things that matter.”

Oh wow, Kelly Underwood delivered a great suspense at the same high standard I have come to know and love from Lynette Eason.

The suspense started right from the start and never ended. There were so many different people who could have been behind everything, and at one point I had a very strong feeling it was a specific character, which turned out to be the right feeling to have. However, with all the different suspects and possibilities, I didn’t have that strong feeling more towards the end – which I prefer – I just hate it when I guess the bad guy and plot twists right from the start.

As like with Lynette Eason’s stories, the romance in this story also took a backseat to the suspense, however, fans who enjoy romance will not feel neglected. It was a while since I’ve read a story where I really really wanted two characters to become a couple like I did with this one. I just loved the characters individually, but even more together as a team.

This book kept me up late, devouring each page to see how it will end.

Well, poor Preston just couldn't catch a break....

Characters:
Layla was intense but also so vulnerable underneath it all. I felt bad for her... She has some serious trust issues. (Don't worry, girl, I know what it's like having trust issues)
Preston...I loved him and felt so bad that no one else was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt...like he's changed and everyone just assumes it's a facade that he'll drop any minute. *hugs*
I loved seeing Charlie again! I'm glad he was in this one!
and all the side characters, the twist I kind of guessed about 40% was still good...I mean, I didn't realize how off their rocker the villain was, so there's that...

Themes:
That we can't go through life or fight our battles on our own... we need God. We need him to fight for us, need to allow Him to guide us. Really good.

Romance:
A few kisses, little more than I usually read but pretty tastefully done...

Language:
N/A

Violence/Gore:
Someone really wants Preston dead, so there's quite a bit going on. From boating accidents, crashes, bombs, snipers, poisoning, near drowning, etc.
It's all pretty tastefully done... but not the most discreet descriptions I've ever read.

Overall:
This was intense! I really enjoyed Preston's character, and the stakes were super high.
Also, the scenes at the gym with all the Elite Guardian team cracked me up.

Has he really changed? Can she?

I've known from the start of the Elite Guardians Collection series that Laila was going to get quite the story, any girl that is ex-Mossad has got to have something pretty impressive. New-to-me author Kelly Underwood didn't disappoint in any way, shape or form! Defending Honor was some seriously edge-of-your-seat stuff in addition to riveting and intense!

There was never a dull or quiet moment in Defending Honor, in either the suspense or romance departments. In fact, this third Elite Guardians Collection novel even had some thriller-ish scenes that got my heart pumping and my fingers turning those pages so fast I think I smelled smoke – OK, maybe that was from fire and explosions in the story, but still, you get my point...

Kelly Underwood did an excellent job as Defending Honor was one of those books that really kept me guessing. There were times when I had no clue who the mastermind could possibly be, and yet there was a niggling suspicion that kept popping up from the back of my mind. This, this is exactly why I have been enjoying the Elite Guardians Collection series so much!

This book appears to be Kelly Underwood's debut and I must say that I was quite impressed. Defending Honor fits in seamlessly with the the rest of the Elite Guardians Collection and it more than holds its own within the realm of Christian romantic suspense. I will most definitely be keeping my eye on Kelly Underwood as time goes on because, based on this book alone one can expect some really good reading from her.

Phew — this one got my ire up on so many levels! I am totally not into all things rich and famous or reality stars with skewed values and this story is rife with that. Poor Preston! No wonder he fled his noxious family but now he’s back, reluctantly taking charge of the business empire which puts a target on his back. Loved the intrigue, there were just so many truly dreadful characters to line up as suspects. So many shallow, manipulative, conniving…gah! Like I said, ire up the whole read through.

Laila put me in mind of Ziva of NCIS fame. She has the same kind of grit and determination and aloofness that hides so much hurt. And she’s really good with the Ninja moves. And the pretend marriage trope is sooooo much fun! Equal parts toe-curling and anxiety inducing.

And the suspense was really good. Hooray to me for pegging the villain before our intrepid hero and heroine. But that was after discarding so many other possibilities. This one kept me on my toes. And there’s a gripping scene at the end that sent shudders through me. Very creepy.

An exciting addition to the Elite Guardians Collection.

I love the Elite Guardians! Each woman in the agency brings their own skill set to make a fabulous team and Laila Rabbinowitz is no exception. She is one hard-kicking, laser focused lady who gives everything she has to protect those who have been assigned to her. She has been deeply hurt by all of the important men in her life and Laila assumes that Preston Whittaker is just the same. But, oh man! Is she (and the reader) in for a wonderful surprise as she begins to trust Preston and realize she may have misjudged him.

The fast-paced action and the long list of suspects made this a book that was hard to put down. I loved being reminded that we can, and do, need to trust God in all things. I recommend reading this if you enjoy romantic suspense stories with a mystery and a strong faith message. While this is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone.

All I can say is "Wow!"!! This is a mind blowing, heart stopping suspense book that you will find yourself saying - "One more chapter". The main characters Laila and Preston have lots of issues that have to be worked out along with discovering the person who seems to have it out for Preston's family. There are so many interesting characters and lots of action and suspense going on that you will try to read faster to find out what is going to happen next. Even though this is a stand alone read, you will want to read the other books in this series - if you haven't already! These books are that good!! Way to go, Sunrise Publishing! Another great author takes the stage with this installment of the Elite Guardians Collection. Lynette Eason teams up with Kelly Underwood to bring a suspence packed story you'll be anxious to finish.
Lalia Rabbinowitz is one of Elite Guardians quieter bodyguards. One should be careful not to mistake quiet with incapable. As former Mossad, Laila, has quite the arsonal of weapons and skills which makes her the perfect guard for Billionaire Preston Whittaker. Preston is in trouble and he needs someone to watch his back 24/7. What better way to do that than to pretend to be his wife?
Together this dynamic duo faces all kinds of trouble. Everywhere they turn someone is gunning for them. How are they going to figure out who is behind it when the list of suspects continually grows?
Underwood did an excellent job of bringing this story together and keeping you wondering which directions she would go next. I'm excited to begin following her writings.

“Defending Honor” by Kelly Underwood is book three of the Elite Guardians Collection.

Bodyguard Laila Rabbinowitz agrees to go undercover to find out who is trying to kill billionaire Preston Whittaker by pretending to be his wife.
Preston returns home after being gone for years, taking the helm of his family’s business after his father and brother are killed.

Though the pacing seemed slow at times, the author does set up a list of suspects so the reader can try to figure out who is after Preston.

This book was so good. I haven't had a chance to read the the other 2 in the series, but it was a great stand alone too. Kelly Underwood hits it out if the park. Laila being an ex-Mosaad agent and Preston a recluse was a great combination. The twists and turns in this story line kept me guessing until the end. You won't be sorry reading this.

Action packed and intense ride.
This is another fun read in the Elite Guardians series.
Laila is challenged to new limits as a bodyguard when she pretends to... be married to the guy she's hired to protect.
She thinks Preston is just another spoiled rich playboy.
I enjoyed seeing their interactions and their relationship progress.
The mystery, suspense, action, and lots of....did I say action?!
Preston is ready to step in and take over the family business. But someone is determined to stop him. The suspect list just kept getting longer, and the longer I read, the more questions I had.

Laila and Preston each had things to deal with from their past. Things that had kept them from trusting each other.

The story is well written, and held my attention the entire way through. I couldn't wait to find out 'whodunit'.

I definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.

Defending Honor by Kelly Underwood was a thrilling read. Danger and excitement started from page one as the Elite Guardians and the police department tried to figure out who wanted Preston dead before they succeeded at their task. Yet, there were moments of connection between Laila and Preston that had you cheering for their happily ever after.

I suspected who the villain was early in the book but Ms. Underwood did a great job of presenting a full cast of potential suspects.

Laila and Preston made a great couple, even when they were faking it and you'll find yourself rooting for them, hoping they'll get their happily ever after.

Readers will be reminded that we're not meant to fight our battles in our own strength.  Instead, we should allow God to fight our battles.

Wow! Author Kelly Underwood truly understands the concept of romantic suspense and she's teamed with Lynette Eason to write an amazing thriller that altered my pulse and kept me turning the pages! Defending Honor has a multi-layered plot, intriguing characters, and some tantalizing romantic chemistry between Laila Rabbinowitz and Preston Whittaker. They are complete opposites of each other and it's their differences that make them so special together! Past experiences have left Laila leery and unwilling to trust but Preston's troubled past has made him keenly aware of where his strength comes from. He has a deep trust in God, and he knows that his past failings and mistakes have been forgiven because of God's grace. Can Preston's witness of faith soften Laila's heart and convince her to trust both him and God? Will this Elite Guardians bodyguard successfully protect him, or will they both become targets of an unknown killer?

Defending Honor has several suspects, many questions, and numerous surprises but there's also a powerful faith message woven into this story. I highly recommend it to all who enjoy romantic suspense and I applaud Underwood's writing debut!

Wowzers! What an incredible book! I’ve been eagerly anticipating Laila’s story since the original series, and this story was everything I dreamed it would be and so much more!
I love the first two books in the Elite Guardians collection, but I think this one may be my favorite!
Laila is a fantastic character, I was cheering her on from the first page, and I loved watching her faith journey! And Preston was an awesome hero, I loved him!
I’m a big fan of the fake relationship trope, and I love that it was featured in this book!
The action and suspense in this book was phenomenal, I was on the edge of my seat from start to finish, and the climax was absolutely brilliant!
There aren’t words to describe just how much I loved this book! I loved every second of this story and hated to see it end!
Kelly Underwood is an amazingly talented writer, she has become a new favorite author for me, and I cannot wait to read her next book!
Defending Honor has a spot on my list of favorite reads of 2022, and I most highly recommend it!

If you enjoy romantic suspense reads with plenty of suspects, strong females, and intense action, Defending Honor by Lynette Eason and Kelly Underwood is just the book for you (as is the entire Elite Guardians series).

In the third installment of the series, readers get to know Laila. This member of the team is the all business, no-nonsense, get the job done, in-and-out type. So, when she is assigned to protect former playboy Preston Whittaker and thrown into a fake marriage, the proximity to her client pushes her to reveal some of her best kept secrets—and deepest hurts.

Eason and Underwood ramp up the stakes with numerous attempts to harm the people Preston loves and the growing attraction between Laila and Preston. And while I guessed the culprit before the end, I did go through several other options before eliminating the true villain.
You don’t want to miss this series.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I found it to be well written and had a nice biblical faith thread in it. I loved seeing Laila and Preston together and them finding their walls coming down. There were a lot of twists and turns and adventure in the book. I did figure out the big plot twist and the person behind everything fairly early on in the book, but I kept reading to figure out if I was right and it didn't lessen my enjoyment of reading the story. I look forward to reading more books by Kelly Underwood.

From the powerhouse duo of veteran suspense novelist, Lynette Eason and new author, Kelly Underwood, Elite Guardians gains serious traction. Suspense and action are stacked upon themes of haunting past mistakes, trust, redemption and second chances. Main characters are flawed yet likeable. Circumstances are realistic and intense. Defending Honor is a welcome edition to the must-read series.

Defending Honor by Lynette Eason and Kelly Underwood is book three in the Elite Guardians Collection. This series follows Lynette Eason’s original Elite Guardians series. While it isn’t necessary to read the other books, I highly recommend that you do. Both the original and sequel series are amazing, suspense-filled reads. You’ll see many familiar faces and this book does reference previous characters and their ongoing relationships.

Laila Rabbinowitz is former Mossad and she is all business when it comes to protecting her new client. Tragedy has thrust former playboy Preston Whittaker back into the spotlight, this time as the head of his family’s business. When circumstances force them into a fake marriage, they will both be forced to face past hurt and betrayal as they fight for their lives. When the line between fake and real begins to blur, they’ll need to decide who they can trust.

If you’re looking for a lighthearted romcom based on the common fake marriage premise, this isn’t the book for you. But if you love an action-packed mystery, filled with well-developed characters and suspenseful plot lines, then read on! I wasn’t sure what to expect with the fake marriage, but the depth of the plot and the character development of Laila and Preston made this a win from the start. The past has caused each of them to withdraw from life and their “marriage” forces them to face these hurts and learn to reach out to those around them. While developing their own relationship, they also learn to rebuild relationships with family and friends.

This was a great addition to the series and, as always, I love seeing previous characters and learning new snippets of what’s been going on in their lives. I highly recommend this book.

Another powerful installment in this remarkable series . . .

'Defending Honor' is the third book in the Elite Guardian Collection where Author Lynette Eason introduces readers to a new author of this Christian romantic suspense series. I have had the pleasure of reading all three of these well-written novels.

The story opens with the mysterious Laila Rabbinowitz getting herself involved in a scary mess in her job as a bodyguard for The Elite Guardians agency. Her assessment of the assignment and situation ends up being off-target, and it ruffles some feathers and leads to some uncomfortable moments.

She is swiftly assigned to another job as a bodyguard for wealthy former playboy and current recluse, Preston Whittaker. His father and brother have been killed in a tragic boating accident, and he decides—against his better judgment—to attend the funeral in his old hometown.

The constant action in this story is riveting; and the dangerous mix of greedy, vindictive, jealous characters ratchets up the drama in this intense plot. Along with her increased involvement in keeping Preston safe, Laila's respect and affection for this man grows immeasurably as the story progresses.

There are lots of twists and turns, red herrings, and surprises in store for readers as the story unfolds.

One of my favorite themes in the book was the strong faith thread. Preston shares his faith journey with Laila on many occasions, and I found his heartfelt story of God's role in his life to be believable and admirable. As he opens up about his past while sharing with Laila, he shows the readers that he has learned a lot from his previous mistakes.

I will look forward to reading more stories written by this author. This book is completely clean in language and content.

"I've never met anyone like you. You showed up the minute I needed help and tackled me like you were ten times bigger than me . . . "

Laila Rabbonowitz might be petite in stature, but she sure packed a punch when called upon to protect the life of a client; her very handsome client, her very high-profile client, her very newlywed . . . . husband??? A fake marriage was certainly one way to remain close to billionaire and former party boy Preston Whittaker, who obviously needed a bodyguard after the suspicious deaths of his father and brother .. . .but what was the man thinking when he agreed to this plan? Laila didn't do "close" . . to anybody, notwithstanding the face that she and Preston were as different as night and day. Or were they? Neither found it easy to trust.

"Laila knew there was a reason she hated dressing up. She'd just never expected her cause of death would be her overpriced sandals."

Fast and furious. This story begins that way and continues at a frenzied pace, overshadowing the few awkward transitions in the beginning of the story; numerous characters had personal motives to thwart Preston's move into the executive head of Whittaker Enterprises, leaving the real instigator to slip through the seams unnoticed until the end. . . . the very dramatic ending, when Laila decides that she "no longer had to do everything on her own, because whether she lived or died, she wasn't alone. It wasn't her battle anymore. . . . . .Tap-tap-tap".
