I grew up with the Buchanan twins. Wreaking havoc. Playing hockey. Causing chaos. Almost all of my memories involve Archer and Maverick. Then I started dating one of them. Archer Buchanan is perfect. He’s sweet. Attentive. Passionate. He’s everything a girl could ask for in a boyfriend. And I love him so much. The problem is…I love his twin brother even more.
Kelsie is a sucker for a love story with all the feels. When she's not chasing words for her next book, you will probably find her reading or, more likely, hanging out with her husband and playing with her three kiddos who love to drive her crazy.
She adores photography, baking, her yorkie, Bob, and her devon rex, Mara. And now that she's actively pursuing her writing dreams, she's set her sights on someday finding the self-discipline to not binge-watch an entire series on Netflix in one sitting.
This book break my heart! I was addicted from the get go. The idea of loving two brothers? Hello have we all seen The Vampire Diaries? And I swear Kelsie Rae is one of the queens of college romance. This book had tension. It had angst. It had forbidden romance. It had spice. And it BROKE MY FREAKING HEART. Do yourself a favor and read it. You won’t regret it. Especially for fans of the don’t let me series. Seeing the couples being adults and all of their kids is super sweet and wholesome!
She was in a secret relationship with Maverick, who she was in love with. She’s about to graduate from high school at the beginning of the story and Maverick convinces her to finally take their relationship public by taking him to prom.
But then he calls her, breaks up with her, and says he won’t be coming to prom while she was waiting for him to show up.
Her best friend, and Maverick’s twin brother, Archer, swoops in to save the day by taking her to prom. That night he confesses his feelings for her and begs her to give him a chance and date him. Eventually she says yes.
She ends up going to the same University as the twins to play hockey for the women’s team and she lives next door to them.
The story follows her and Mavericks POV as they’re constantly put in forced proximity situations and fighting their feelings for each other. At the same time the guilt of keeping it a secret that she and Maverick dated from his twin brother keeps coming up.
This is not your typical hockey romance. It starts out really juicy, turns spicy, and then gets really sad in the end.
I cried as I read it.
I liked that it was juicy and different, but now I’m definitely going to make sure my hockey romances are FLUFFY after this one. I don’t want any more surprises 😂
Also, I was asked several times if there was cheating in this book. There is not technically any cheating. This is also NOT a why choose / sharing situation. It’s more along the lines of a love triangle.
for fuck's sake man. this book was. not it. this entire review will be spoilery because everything about it pissed me off and not in a good and gratifying way, but genuinely irritated me. idk what books you 4-5 star reviewers are reading but clearly not good ones if you think this shit is passable as a good read.
i got this thinking it was going to be a hockey romance book, and granted, it sort of was, but hockey was more on the backburner than it was a heavy presence other than to set up the whole "we're hockey legacies so we're all here in this little duplex" like whatever.
anyways, to start, fuck ophelia. i hate ophelia. it's very, very, VERY rare that i dislike a fmc, and i tried to remind myself like, "she's 18, of course she's stupid," but i've read YA books, both recently and growing up with young adult protags who weren't even HALF as insufferable. ophelia was objectively insufferable and grating and irritating and selfish and just awful. she has to be one of the most unsympathetic main characters i've ever had the displeasure of having to read the pov from.
to get into the book, it just sucked. the writing was juvenile and irritating. it literally flows like a poorly written wattpad story that somehow got published, but i've read better written wattpad and quizazz original stories/fanfics over the years when i did actively used to read stories hosted on those sites. it is baffling to me how this book has such a high rating but eye of the beholder i suppose. i'm yucking your yums because i did unfortunately read through the entire book because i, no matter how much i dislike a book, cannot ever not finish one. i had to use annotation tabs to mark the points of the book that remarkably pissed me off or were questionable and sus and just fucking weird. there were some grammar issues that i noticed closer to the end. overall it seemed fine before i noticed the first one, but like whatever. this book was less prose-y than it was just, awful streams of consciousness and pointless and annoying introspection that didn't make me anymore sympathetic to ophelia and irritating dialogue. there were so few actual in-the-world events like this was like all in the span before the semester even actually started, i think? it was so annoying.
there were some inconsistencies that pissed me off too, like a character named trevor cameron. cameron's clearly his last name, but he'd just constantly be called cameron outside of dialogue. like when ophelia meets him, she'd call him trevor in dialogue but then the narration was saying cameron and it's like... okay whatever. like it's common for for hockey players to nickname each other or call each other by their last names, but like the way that kelsie wrote it felt like she just forgot the dude's name.
i'll be getting spoilery after this so i'll hide it for people who care but.
Love triangle, angsty, and a bit of a tearjerker at the end.
Ophelia has loved two boys her entire life, and they’re twins. One, Archer, she loves like her best friend, and the other, Maverick… Maverick she loves with her entire being. She starts secretly dating Mav her senior year in high school, but the night of her prom he stands her up, and everything changes. She finds solace in (you guessed it) Archer and when she goes to college, where both boys are her neighbors, life gets messy.
This wasn’t the best love triangle I’ve ever read, but it also definitely wasn’t the worst either.
This was actually such a cringey read that I was hoping my e-reader would burst into flames and save me.
Some people gave this a 🌶️3/5, but it’s honestly a 🌶️1/5. What smut even was there? And when it was there it wasn’t even that good.
I have nothing to say other than this was bad and nonsensical. It was like a well written Wattpad story, but not anything that should’ve been published without major re-writes.
I was not AT ALL prepared for the emotional rollercoaster that was this book. BUT, I loved every single second of it. The dedication held true:
“To all the girls who love a good cry and the founders of Kleenex. You’re welcome.”
So let me be the one to warn you, you will 100% need the Kleenex & about 3-5 business days to recover from this book.
With all that being said, this book was phenomenal. It is book one in the next-gen to Kelsie’s ‘Don’t Let Me’ series. It follows Maverick & Ophelia who grew up together & are childhood friends. They’ve always had a connection, a pull between the two of them but they always ignored it until one night where they both gave into temptation. After that night they started a secret relationship. Everything was going great until Maverick is supposed to take Ophelia to prom & finally be “introduced” to her family as her boyfriend & he ends up breaking up with her instead. But who better to pick up the pieces of her shattered heart than his twin brother…
*CHECK TWs!!*
Tropes: - Sports Romance - Childhood Friends to Lovers - Love Triangle - Twin Brothers - She plays hockey too - Neighbors - Forced Proximity
heart:aching❤️🩹🤕 (don’t worry the romance has a HEA)
this did a number on me (in the best way possible)…
I somehow have 0 thoughts other than this was so good. If you want tension, angst, and a twin brother love triangle - read this!
TROPES & SUCH -twin brothers -love triangle -h ends up with ONE brother -owd: no -omd: other brother -cheating: yes, h & H cheat together* -hea: yes (for the romance)*
*HEA: h ends up w/ one brother & the romance has a HEA; there is something sad that happens w/ another character. In terms of romance, it’s a HEA.
*Cheating: it’s a bit blurry & messy of lines but I’d say technically yes, there’s cheating. The h while w/ one brother cheats with the other brother (the H) — not full on sex but still.
* Emotional Cheating: Again, blurry lines. I’d say yes in sense h still in love w/ H, she tries to get over him w/ brother (🌚 I know) but still has that attachment. Towards end of relationship w/ brother emotions bc more apparent w/ H.
NOTES —Archer is a sweet angel and I want to hug him. He deserved more. He deserved better. 😩😭😭😭😭❤️🩹
—Despite the drama, I completely feel for Maverick & Ophelia 😭🩷; the pull away from Maverick makes complete sense
—Side & personal note: Ophelia has been at the top of my list for baby names FOREVER. I’m obsessed w/ this name. It’s giving mythological goddess. It’s giving ethereal literature & philosophical being ✨✨✨ (imo lol)
OG review 5/26/25:
RTC — once I drink enough coffee to explain how amazing this book was 😭☕️
There were so many issues with this book that I don’t even know where to start. Ophelia’s parents’ book was my favorite so it’s kinda shocking that she sucks so bad. She is so stupid and selfish and I found myself wishing she wouldn’t get an HEA because she and Maverick simply didn’t deserve one. That ending came straight out of pocket and Archer deserved so much better. Like, wtf was that shit? BITCH, IN WHAT WORLD WAS THAT AN HEA?!?
Also, I have questions. So in the beginning, she’s 18 and he’s a junior in college, which would make him at least 3 years older than her. Now, that isn’t a large age gap. But, it gets real icky when he and his brother constantly talk about how they’ve wanted her for years. You mean when she was 15 and you were 18? Wtf? 🤢
i’m at a loss for words right now. the last 10% of this book genuinely had me so shocked and confused. i really liked archer and felt bad for him the whole time AND THEN THE ENDING??? my man didn’t deserve that😩 i wish there would have been a win-win solution for everyone but that’s not always the case and i’m just glad it wasn’t for nothing. i think this emotional aspect of the book really added to it and made this book have a lot of depth.
also thank you kelsie so much for sending me an arc copy!
4⭐️ I really enjoyed this book. It had a great storyline and the characters were lovable also the trope was one that I feel is harder to write without it being boring or weird. This book was really well executed but SO SAD at the end like wtf I did not see that coming. I audiobooked this and the narrators were perfect for the story. I will DEFINITELY be reading the next book in the series.
This book has vexed me to a point where I wanna fight the main antagonist or more protagonists. I’m sorry nothing about this story sold me on their relationship or any of the characters relationships. Like where do I even begin with the diabolical nature of the Ophelia? We endlessly told that Archer has been her best friends since childhood, but there’s no chemistry to indicate a fiends bond anywhere. It’s a case of telling instead of showing.
This book was so diabolical that I wasn’t even sure I wanted to finish it. And I’m scared looking at all the other reviews because I’m convinced we didn’t read the same book.
Ophelia I’m even embarrassed to be the same gender as cause girl stand tf up. A man hides your lil relationship, breaks up with you before your prom and says you were never official? And you wanna go crying over that same man the entire book? Is it crack that you’re smoking? Girl stand up😭 like your sister ate you up so bad in that scene and I see why y’all don’t see eye to eye. Like I felt like this book was mocking me because ain’t no way all this nonsense is going down and the only one to really stand on business is the sister we barely hear from the entire book.
Mav was the most annoying character, no scratch that both the brother were equally annoyin🤬🤬🤬 like I don’t think you understand how vexed this book made me cause it’s just glorifying toxic behavior that needs to be eradicated.
You know what I’m being to hard on Opie or whatever her name is cause she just finished high school and it’s starting uni and all, so her frontal lobe isn’t fully developed to know how to be a decent human being. Like she’s literally just turned 18 so she’s a lil naive, so my blame would be on Mav cause how a grown man about to graduate college messing around with a girl that JUST FINISHED HIGH SCHOOL😳 I’m currently in uni and the thought of hocking up with someone who hadn’t even finished high school at the time, makes me want to throw up. This man is basically 22 years old and she’s just turned 18 if she even is that age……like are y’all computing this information?? I can’t
The constant mentioning of lil girls plans for the future yet I can’t even tell you what she plans for her future. This is my problem with this book, it’s constantly giving us information in a manner that we just supposed to accept it. Like the characters are the most one dimensional characters I’ve read. The most interesting character was lil girls sister and that was just from a few pages. These characters are diabolical and the person who recommended this book on the clock app needs jail time, because I want my time back……I feel robbed of the time I spent reading this book.😩😩😩
I haven’t even finished this book but I’m almost done and I’m so pissed. Are we serious?!?!? Archer had to DIE?!?!! Are we fucking SERIOUS ?!
It was an okay story before I found this out.. I might have given it a 3 maybe 3.5 stars but now it’s just a straight up 1…
I understand the sentiment over offing archers character to make it more “impactful” but no… I was not expecting it to go this way and honestly I get you have to make twists and turns and have drama and shock value sometimes but this is an instance where I would have been fine with the mundane happily ever after where the brothers just made up and Lia and Archer were friends again and Mav ended up getting a heart the other way. But fuuuuuccckk this.
Poor archer gets shit on by the girl of his dreams/best friend and brother and then DIES?!? yeah no, absolutely horrendous.
I’m not even interested in finishing this book now… but I guess I’m gonna go skim it and see what dumb ass sappy ending it ends up being. Like I’m so annoyed… I thought it was a joke when mav said “he died” like what?!?!???! I thought “there’s no way he just said his brother died and that he for one, just died and maverick said it that casually… and two there’s no way he just died to further this plot along in the STUPIDEST way possible???”
She could have at least had archer die and then mav and Lia end up together and realizing they are meant for each other AFTER?!? Archer could have at least got the girl before he died and they both could have had her.
And then she had the BALLS to write maverick telling archer when I die you take care of her ?!?! Like um no sorry buddy you’re dying before me now even tho maverick has the fucking heart condition and oh yeah jk in the split second of finding out you died I’m also taking your heart?!?!?! Like WTF baffled, so baffled. Other than that the story was just very mid anyway. Nothing special, it was fine reading for the most part, up until this bs happened😀🙃
Okay update: THEN THEY HAVE A KID AND NAME HIM AFTER ARCHER?!? Like actually give the kid archers name???? Idk it’s wild to me it was so glossed over about his death and so not TRAUMATIC to them?? and then a few years later they literally replace him in a way with the new kid??? My own brother died and I would never give my kid my brothers first name like that’s my brothers name… he’s never going to be replaced…and I would never want someone to take over his name.. yes I would put his name or something that relates to him as a middle name but never take his actual name and give my child it… idk maybe it’s just me but just bad vibes all around with this whole ending and now just the whole book for me lmao

I absolutely loved it! I was not expecting to have my heart ripped out while reading this. I definitely wasn't use to this kind of heartbreak from Kelsie Rae but it was an amazing read. She has a way of writing books that I just can't put down and always wanting more. This book was no exception. I never wanted to stop reading this book because I constantly felt the need for the tension to be resolved. This book had the perfect amount of tension and I really connected and fell in love with the characters. I already can't wait for the next book to come out! My advice for new Kelsie Rae readers is to read the wrecked roommates series, then the don't let me series before reading the little things series, it will make the entire reading experience so much better!
i finished this book at 1:37 a.m. and all i can say is what. the. fuck. i will be mentioning spoilers further down the list so just a heads up. - i hate this book - ophelia was a shitty person & i hated her - i have no idea what both of them saw in her - the cheating trope makes me want to pull my hair out - SPOILERRRRRS - even i could tell tatum was in love with archer - we could’ve gotten a story for them two but NOOOOO they just had to ruin the one good person in this book by LITERALLY killing him - i really don’t get why we couldn’t have maverick getting a heart AND archer getting to actually live his life. how it happened is so fucked - archer deserved better. - 1 star ⭐️ if i had the physical copy of this, i’d throw it out the window and into the trash. i’m so pissed off lmao

The rollercoaster you go on is phenomenal. All the emotions that you go on while reading this book is truly amazing.
The angst between Ophelia and Maverick is such a big part of their relationship and Kelsie builds their relationship up so beautifully. I wanted to hate Maverick after him hurting her time and time again. However the heart wants what the heart wants and Ophelia followed hers throughout the entire book.
Archer had loved Opie their whole life and after “mystery man” broke her heart on the night of her senior prom he was finally able to make his move. He was patient and willing to piece her heart back together and wait for her to be ready.
Lia got to college and she wasn’t prepared to see Archers twin Maverick every time she went to hang out with Archer and their teammates. Maverick is an absolute donkey to her anytime she is around. Over time it gets better Opie starts listening to her heart and breaks up with Archer after a fight one night. She kissed Mav the same night and they proceeded to have another “secret” relationship. Archer finds out that Mav was her mystery man from prom night and there is a full blown dramatic episode.
Just when I thought it might be okay Maverick drops a bomb on her and everything clicks into place as to why he tried to distance himself from her. After his near death experience he finally tells his family, which breaks my heart. Archer and Mavericks talk in the hospital made me cry so bad. After everything they were able to make amends.
The last few chapters had me bawling- I didn’t see Archers ending and his saving of his twin brothers life. I cried while reading everyone’s perspective and what they were feeling at the loss of Archer. Archer gave Lia and Mav a true chance to truly love each other without Mavericks diagnosis.
The epilogue had me smiling so hard- AJ being her new knight and Mav still being her “clown” (jester) made me so happy.
Absolutely loved this book- I can’t wait to read about Dylan, Fin, and especially Reeves. I loved Reeve in this book being the friend that pushed everyone together. I want to see what Kelsie has in store for him because he deserves an epic love!🤍🤍🤍

tsitp winter edition with ice hockey. the brothers, the girl, the yearning… all of it felt the same.
honestly, there was only one exception where i could forgive him for treating her badly, and that exception happens in the book..like fine i forgive you
the ending was way too fast paced and the time lapse didn’t satisfy me. one second the book was all cute tension, and the next it turned super emotional and heavy , it felt a little rushed.
and Archer… he didn’t deserve that. It was a wasted potential. I’d love to see him get his happy ending.
Was recommended by one of my best friends, and was not let down! Super gripping, fun, and heartbreaking All in one. Be ready to gobble this chunky romance right up!
-Maverick. God, I really did like him. I felt like his character had the most depth once you got through the first 150-200 pages of the book.
-The depth this book ended up having once you got through the first 200 pages. The ending was extremely predictable, but it still made me emotional.
-The writing itself was mostly good and easy to read and follow. This was the first book I’ve read from this author, and it held my attention, even when I was rolling my eyes.
-The way that the characters owned up to their mistakes and didn’t make excuses at the end, even though it took a long time to get to that point.
✨Here’s what I didn’t like:
-Ophelia is not my favorite FMC. I know she’s only 18, but she read like an 18 year old too, and that made it difficult to like her at times. I don’t know if that makes any sense. 😅 She was extremely immature for the first half of the novel and it almost made me DNF the book completely.
-The first 200 pages are cringey. So cringey and immature. I can’t tell you how much I rolled my damn eyes, it was so obnoxious. The miscommunications, the weirdly sexual banter that felt out of place, all of it. The pacing was weird at times, too.
-It was too cookie cutter sometimes. The parents buying the duplex for their kids? Okay… ALL of them going to the same school? Okay… I get that these are likely people tied in from other books by this author, but it wasn’t my favorite.
-The ending. The ending was predictable. And it makes me mad when it feels like a character gets the short end of a stick to the extent that Archer did, just to give your two mains a happily ever after. It just felt… Weird. And I felt awful for Archer and how much he got seriously screwed over at every turn in this book, even before the ending. 🥺
-How some of the conflict was handled wasn’t my favorite. It felt juvenile.
In all, this wasn’t my favorite book, but it held my attention and I do think the story as a whole got stronger for the most part the longer it went on.
Definitely worth reading once and I’ll likely check out other novels by this author. 😊
I hated this. Matter of fact, this is the second book I’ve read by this author and the female characters are always the absolute worst. They’re whiny and annoying and so incredibly selfish. You know who you like, so why do they always feel the need to be annoying.
There was soooo much inner monologue that was unnecessary. There was also so much apologizing and blame gaming through out.
Also the house party games? Idk they just seemed … idk.
Ngl, I did not see that plot twist. But like it was a shitty ass plot twist.
This book ripped my heart to shreds then got put back together just to be ripped again. This book is definitely a tear jerker. I loved it though. Honestly such an amazing book. I wish I could read it for the first time again and feel all the emotions I felt throughout the entire book. Worth the read!
✨ 💯/10. I'm in love. What a nice introduction to a new author! Ophelia and Maverick stole my heart. Their love was beautiful. I even let a tear fall in the last few chapters. I am looking forward to Dylan and Reeves' book. ✨
