The Singer Tales #6

Song of Vines

Rate this book
Jacinta never planned to stumble into the world of the giants…or to throw herself back into the prince’s life

For Jacinta and her mother, life is a daily struggle in the frozen north, right in the shadow of Battlement Wall. She can barely remember the happy days of her childhood, when the royal family visited their northern manor, and she and the prince and princess would play together. They’ve forgotten all about her, and life holds nothing but hunger and hard work. At least, until an elf appears from nowhere and catapults her into an unwelcome adventure in the dangerous land of the giants.

Prince Matthias never forgot the playmate who once made his summers so happy. When Jacinta reappears abruptly into his life with a report of giants and treacherous plots, he’s determined not to let her slip through his fingers again.

Except, all the barriers that have kept them apart for eight years are still there. Not to mention his father is determined to exploit Jacinta’s connection with the giants’ land, never mind the danger to her. With the discovery of the threat that’s looming over the entire continent, Matthias shouldn’t be distracted by matters of the heart. But he can’t lose Jacinta, or betray her again. He’ll have to overcome not only the scheming giant king, but his own weakness, or he’ll risk saving Providore at the cost of losing the one person he can’t live without.

Song of Vines is the sixth and final installment in The Singer Tales, a series of interconnected standalone novels set on the continent of Providore, where magic is harnessed by singers. Each story follows a different heroine navigating everything from miniature elves to brutish giants as she chases her own happily ever after. If you enjoy strong heroines, clean romance, and fantasy worlds with a dash of intrigue, discover the world of The Singer Tales today.

Deborah Grace White was more or less born reading. She grew up on a wide range of books, from classic literature to light-hearted romps. Her love of fantasy was inevitable from the time her father read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy to her and her siblings when she was four years old.

The love of reading has traveled with her unchanged across multiple continents, and carried her from her own childhood all the way to having children of her own.

But if reading is like looking through a window into a magical and beautiful world, beginning to write her own stories was like discovering she could open that window and climb right out into fantasyland.

Now she gets to live that childhood dream amidst the fun and chaos of life with her husband and their four kids.

4.5 stars ✨ Clean Fiction - Fairytale Retelling

I made a horrible mistake of starting this book late at night. Which means I finished this book in the wee hours of the morning and which means the next day will be a bear, but oh. Oh! This book was so worth it! My new favorite of the series for many reasons like Matthias (love him!!), the childhood best friends to more trope, the second chance trope (which I usually feel meh about but adored in this one), the cutest romantic parts (!!), but also for how it all worked out in the end. I may have seen the broad ending coming from a mile away, but do I care? ✨ no ✨ it was perfect!

Jack and the Beanstalk, but gender swapped and she becomes a spy for the love interest’s king father and sneaks into the giants’ land. Welp, I’m sold. Give me childhood-best-friends-to-more any day, but add in dangerous spying? *grabby hands*

Despite reading all of the five prior books this month, I couldn’t remember what had been said in the prior books about Matthias or Mariella, so I kind went into it blindly. Which worked out wonderfully in my favor because they were great and then getting to see all the prior characters again (particularly my favorite couples from books 3 & 5) was so special!

Matthias and Mariella also entered more cute sibling content to this book! This series has done that so well and the author writes it perfectly—you can tell she’s from a big family with siblings of her own and I just love how it came across in this series and the other fairytale series. Almost all of the books in this series have highlighted it positively and I think that’s so special to see because most fairytales have mean siblings and it was great to see that element turned on it’s head throughout these books.

I honestly wasn’t super-duper interested in Deborah Grace White’s other non-fairytale series (besides the trilogy that is connected to this series), but I think I will be trying those out this year as well when I’m in the mood for a fantasy series to binge-read because I’ve been very impressed with both series.

If I had one, teeny tiny—minuscule, really—complaint, it would be that I needed way more of Matthias’ POV. I’m so soft for MMC that are completely weak for their girl and have the cutest puppy-like energy following her around and yet also will protect her from anyone who means her harm. He reminded me a lot of Bentleigh from Kingdom of Slumber by this author in her other fairytale series, so it’s really no surprise why I liked Matthias so much. 😁

I know I already said this, but it can be said again thankyouverymuch—I loved seeing everyone again in this final book. 🥹🥹🥹 (my face was literally that emoji 🥹😭)

And because I know I’ll probably be asked: No, I cannot pick one fairytale series over the other by this author. The other series is much more of a classic retelling style with some wonderfully unique elements, but this one is different because of the singing music parts and then the less-common fairytales being retold. Apples and oranges, I say, don’t make me pick between them. Which to read first? Hmm, I think either would be fine on that. I liked both series for different reasons, though I will note that this series took until the third book to really suck me in, but these final two books were well worth the investment.

More so than any of the other books in this series, I could see this one not really as a movie in my head, but perhaps more of a webcomic or just a comic. With the giants, elves, and different events in this plot, this series would make an excellent comic or animated movie. I could see the final scene in the epilogue pan out to have the couple embracing under fireworks. Magical, I tell you. Someone get on this stat. If I could draw a decent stick figure, I would, but my stick finger’s arms are always lopsided so I think that should take me out of the running. So I’ll just be the cheerleader with the pompoms cheering the team on. 📣

…I’m sad now. It’s over. I still have the Haiden bonus story which I assume (read: which better) have updates on all of these characters to a certain degree, but just like with any other beloved series, it was a bittersweet ending because I enjoyed it so much. 🥺

Song of Vines is the thrilling finale of the Singer Tales series by Deborah Grace White. With an inspired gender-bent retelling of "Jack and the Beanstalk," a star-crossed romance, magical mishaps, and a big reunion of familiar faces, this book hits all the right notes to bring the series to an exciting crescendo. I enjoyed this book a lot more than its prequel, Song of Trails, which felt off compared to the other Singer Tales stories. The heroine in this book is particularly relatable to Millenials as a curious and hopeful young lady who has fallen on hard times financially. Song of Vines manages to bring together the events that took place in all the other books and wraps up the intricate world of elves, giants, and song magic that has been expertly woven into the DNA of the Singer Tales.

Jacinta has fallen on hard times after her parents lost their esteemed jobs at the castle before her father's passing. Gone are the carefree days of her childhood when she would play games with Prince Matthias and Princess Mariella at their summer estate. Now, it's a struggle just to ensure that she and her mother have enough food to survive each day. Things get so desperate that she is forced to go to the market and sell their prized cow where she unwittingly makes a deal with an elf for some beans that are allegedly magical. Thinking she was conned, Jacinta returns home in defeat to find that the beans actually did possess magic and open a secret passage into Kjemper, the fearsome kingdom of the giants. After following the beanstalk's path, she is given a message from a rebellious giant to take back to her king. When she does so, she is reunited with Prince Matthias and must face the obstacles that stood in the way of their relationship over the years.

One might think that after reading so many fairy tale romances, they would lose some of their appeal but I loved the love story in this book. It reminded me of Andrew Lloyd Webber's underrated "Cinderella" musical in which she and the prince were childhood friends who grew apart over the years due to their drastic differences in status. The prince's parents in this book are horrid, doing everything in their power to keep the two star-crossed lovers apart and constantly plunging Jacinta into danger, which she repeatedly faces head-on out of loyalty to her kingdom. Fortunately, Matthias's headstrong sister, Mariella, goes out of her way to prove to Jacinta that their parents' prejudice does not apply to them and to make her feel as welcome as possible in the castle in the hopes that Jacinta and Matthias can rekindle their old flame. Mariella is a wonderful friend and a bright light throughout the dangers and uncertainties of Jacinta's circumstances.
This book does an excellent job of tying together all the elements of "Jack and the Beanstalk" while also bringing the events of the other books in the Singer Tales to a satisfying conclusion. Although some of the whimsy of the fairy tale is lost when the beanstalk grows in a northward path instead of extending up into the clouds, it is made up for through the clever use of an invisible tunnel that only Jacinta has access to. The kingdom of the giants, which was introduced in Song of Winds, is described in great detail, emphasizing the brutish nature of the mythical race and how different their culture is from the elves and humans who reside in this world. Valwynn, the elf who trades Jacinta's cow for magic beans, is an excellent source of comic relief, always showing up at unexpected times and offering some of the most amusing quips in the book.

Song of Vines is a triumphant finale to the Singer Tales, masterfully weaving together the threads of previous books and fairy tale inspirations. Deborah Grace White's clever retelling of "Jack and the Beanstalk" shines with a star-crossed romance, magical mayhem, and a grand reunion of beloved characters. With its expertly crafted worldbuilding, heartwarming relationships, and thrilling adventures, this book is a must-read for fans of the series and fairy tale retellings alike. The satisfying conclusion to the Singer Tales series will leave readers with a sense of wonder and a reminder that even in the darkest times, love, loyalty, and friendship can conquer all.

Fantastic end to these tales! Jacinta and Matthias were childhood friends unlike the other couples in these books. It felt like it took a while for them to meet, but around 25%, they met and the storyline pace picked up. Matthias’s sister and Hagen round them out perfectly without feeling like they’re third- or fourth-wheeling. They all were dynamic and we got a chance to learn about each of them without detracting from the plot’s progression. I enjoyed this series. The plot was well-written and concluded nicely. Some cameos even appeared! I would happily recommend this book and this series!

A Perfect Conclusion

This was a great conclusion to the series. I loved how the giants and the beanstalk were woven into Jacinta’s story in new and unexpected ways. I loved the sweet childhood friendship turned romance, and I wanted to give the king a major set-down!

Wonderful conclusion to the series

I really liked Jacinta. She was humble and sweet. The balance of heroines throughout the series was the strongest aspect of it all.

Jack and the Beanstalk in a whole new light.

Jacinta and Matthias were childhood friends. Along with his sister, Mariella, the children enjoyed a month of laughter and play each summer in Briarford, a quiet town on the far eastern corner of the kingdom. Those childhood days, however, quickly came to an end when the King and Queen stopped vacationing in Briarford when Jacinta and Matthias were 10.

It’s 8 years later and Jacinta and her mother are on the point of starvation when Jacinta leads her cow to market in order to barter for food to see them through the winter. Tricked by an elf into trading her cow for 5 magic beans, Jacinta buries them out back, behind the outhouse… and overnight they grew. To Jacinta’s surprise the beanstalk runs along the grass and buries itself in the massive Battlement Wall- a wall built so high and so thick that no giant living in the neighboring country could ever breach it.

Or could Jacinta fit into the tunnel made by the beanstalk and follow where it goes?

Lots of fun awaits in this last official book of the Singer series, There are dangerous missions, dashing swordplay with tunics off, chaste kisses that take ages to get to but so worth the wait, and an elf who has a serious love for her cow companion. What’s not to love?

As for me, now I am off to read Island of Secrets and Sacrifice from the Sacrificed Hearts series as it’s set in the same world as the Singer books. So, yay! Technically there is another book for me to read in this fascinating world.

Review for it will be up in a day or so.

This is a Jack and the Beanstalk retelling with childhood friends to lovers woven throughout it. It took me a bit to like Jacinta and I know I’m not pronouncing her name right…haha! Matthias was great! I loved the banter between his sister and him! It was so good! Books need more of that! Mariella and Hagen were so cute! I loved them! It was really cool to see Herlief and Adrienne and their baby as well as everyone else from previous books!! I didn’t care for Matthias’ parents at all! They were such a pain! Matthias and Jacinta’s love story was amazing and I loved it! Man, that ending was heart pounding and thrilling! This was so good and a wonderful ending to the series! This was probably my favorite of the series with Song of the Sea coming in as a close second! 5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Quotes that I liked:

🫘 Again Matthias's answer was swift, his voice low and throbbing this time. "To me, you're worth the pain."

🫘 “Jacinta, I want so much more than friendship from you. I've loved you all my life.
The nature of that love has changed since we were children, but it's a change that was inevitable. Even my own parents recog nized that, well before I did. No distance or years could remove you from my heart. I don't believe anything ever will."

🫘 "I've waited all my life for you, Princess Jacinta. I would have waited eight more years if I had to. You're worth every minute."

Contains kisses and a violent death of a giant (as one expects from Jack and the Beanstalk)

I liked that Jacinda was level-headed. I liked the beanstalk aspect going horizontally rather than vertically. I liked that Jacinda didn’t steal the stuff as Jack does in the original but instead they are gifts. And I liked that instead of stealing the giants stuff and then murdering him the death of the giant was about self-preservation.

I didn’t like Jacinda’s name and the MCs relationship. They are friends in childhood, don’t see each other for years, when they see each other again it is short spurts at a time since his parents disapprove of their friendship. The thing i hated the most was him saying to her “how do you not know that I love you?” Like how would she know??? You never talk, she’s never been vulnerable with you, she keeps running away, how are you in love???

Also, I remember after reading book 1 that I wanted to know what happened with the giants. I was disappointed that the next books didn’t continue the story. Now we have the story but it’s been so long since I read book 1 that I couldn’t remember what happened and who all the royals were.

What a fantastic ending to this unique series! It always makes me both sad and happy to come to the conclusion of a good series, and this is no exception. This Jack and the Beanstalk retelling is now my favourite of those I have read. I loved the ways the original story (as I know it from Disney ;) was brought in without feeling forced.

The characters were so fun- Jacinta, Matthias, Mariella, Hagen. There are also super fun cameos- from the main characters of other books, and even some side characters who had a bit of an air of mystery to them when we first saw them.

All told, this was a wonderful story and a solid ending to the Singer Tales series. (Although, if you love the world, make sure you read the pages following the note from the author!)

Violence-wise, there is some fighting and some death, but nothing in a very gory way.

Romance- clean! There is a HEA, of course, but I find this story well in like of my preference for just a kiss or two, and not steamy ones at that. : )

I was so consumed by this wonder friends to lovers second chance romance with a huge dose of obstacles and impossibilities placed in their way. The class differences were really handled impeccably, and added so much to the story.

The Jack and the Beanstalk retelling was handled incredibly well. I really appreciated how the author remained true to all the elements of the original tale while making it all fit seamlessly into this world with its unique magic system.

Although this is the sixth book in this series, it serves perfectly as a standalone. I have not read any of the other novels in this series and thoroughly enjoyed this one without any difficulties. From the few hints about some of the other characters, I’m certainly inclined to check out the rest of the series.

I loved every moment of this and highly recommend it for lovers of less-often retold tales and no-spice slow-burn romance that hits the spot.

Boring and rushed

If this is the conclusion of the series it really was super boring and rushed. The giants were teaser throughout the series and a bad guy stealing magic..then when it gets to that point...nothing. Like, seriously nothing. Jacinta walked to the castle in giant land..passed no one. Wasn't confronted cuz she was invisible. The 1 scene where she was noticed was about a page long. There's barely any story here. Its not a very good book

the plot finally reaches its climax!

The author tied things together very neatly in this story, and the much-awaited gathering of each couple felt natural and organic instead of just a pleasure-insert. The romance was sweet — and with the depiction of class differences and the prince’s staunch loyalty, I admittedly felt more for these characters than the others. An excellent story and conclusion to the series.

incredible and worth the read!

This is like the textbook perfect for finishing the series: all secrets are exposed, mysteries are solved, all evil is conquered, all main characters reappear, and the ultimate HEA is achieved.

And in the midst of it all, we see a beautiful, romantic, and magical fairy tale retelling with lovable characters, engaging style, and a gripping plot.
Well done, Mrs. White.

Lovely twist on a familiar tale

I love Matthias and Jacinta's relationship in this book, and the twists on the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. I also found Valwynn and her cow very endearing. As well as the cameos from past characters in the series, and a side romance. Very lovely story!

Wonderful Jack and the Beans talk retelling

So much more in depth than the original! Well developed characters and story line. I loved Jacinta with her unfailing courage, Matthias and his unfailingly love, and of course Mariella with her untameable enthusiasm. And then there is the stoic and steady Hagen.

well written series!

If you like clean, retelling of fairytales with great twists, and good characters, this is a wonderful series.
One thing I appreciate from Deborah is that she doesn't get overly sappy, she doesn't feel the need to repeatedly describe the characters’ appearances every page, and that she provides a good sense of humor amid the challenges her characters face. Life would be daunting with out joy.
