A world where humans and aliens live separately side by side. Just don’t get caught on the wrong side of the border.
Meira had never seen an Avian alien up close until one captured her and chained her up in his cave. Death awaited her as punishment for crossing the border between the humans and aliens. How could she know that the pull she felt toward him would lead to a fated destiny? One that includes his best friend and his most hated adversary. A destiny that would have her hunted from both sides like the rare prey that she is.
Being rare comes at a price.
Reverse harem, forbidden love, winged aliens, mate bond, HEA guaranteed
- Winged Aliens (Not Angels) - Fated mates - Forbidden love - Instant love - Why Choose/Reverse Harem - His best friend and rival/bully - Forced Proximity - Attempted SA (more than once) - I hate Jasper (Yes, I felt the need to bullet) - Extra spicy - Cute nicknames (Little Dove being my favorite)
Meira lives in a world where an alien bird-like species crash landed over a hundred years ago and they live in separate halves of the world, separated by a border that's patrolled and the punishment for crossing is death. No questions asked. She has a bird sanctuary, where she takes in ones that would otherwise not be cared about given the human populations dislike for winged things. She has good friends, though her best friend has been coming on to her stronger and stronger, and she doesn't know what do about it. To put some distance between her and him so she can figure out how she actually feels about his increasingly sexual advances, she accidentally crosses the border and ends up captured by an alien she can't seem to resist.
I had been following this author before her release, excited for winged hotties, but it was just one of those books that fell on the back burner. Until I saw the ARC call for book two. I applied, was accepted, and bought book one to finally read it, happily content that I had a reason to force myself to just read a book I was excited for. Then it was kind of a slow start. Oh boy. But once this book picks up, boy does it run off and never stop.
Overall I really loved this book. The relationship between the main characters is really sweet (even thought we just sort of hurriedly brush over Aeron's past bullying, but I chalk it up to mating bond magic). Meira can kind of feel a little flat, but the boys all have strong personalities. Kyler is fiery, passionate, but submissive. Dristen is protective, kind, and strong. Aeron is sarcastic, loving, attentive, and caring...he is kind of the rock of the group I think. I am hoping that book two we see more of Meira, now that she is full alien and not constantly being assaulted from every angle and has a chance to spread her wings, so to speak.
I hate Jasper. Like with a passion, so much so I DM'd the author to state that simple fact, I hate him, that is all. I never understood how people could possibly hate a POV character's chapters. Like it was a concept that boggled my little brain. Until this character. Oh. My. God. He is everything I hate in a man, and his chapters felt...slimey. Bravo to the author for that honestly. I hate his guts, but he's probably the reason this book is five stars over a four. I felt genuine hatred for this man. Perfection.
I really am looking forward to getting my hands on book two. I can't wait to see what happens in *space* and everything. I am hooked into the story.
Enjoyed reading! This was my first alien romance ever and let me tell you, it did not dissapoint!! This read was unique in the best way possible. Loved the world building and the characters. Now I love me some "why choose " and Torah really gave us why choose on crack. 10/10 on that note. I really like Torah’s style of writing. And can’t wait to read book number two in this series.
A great book for fans of the why-choose trope, fated mates, insta-love, and aliens on Earth! I found the whole premise of the book captivating. The world building kept me hooked from beginning to end. The spicy scenes were many and chili-hot :D I was worried the book might end on a cliffhanger, but it is more of a HFN, so I'm glad I read it before the next one comes out instead of waiting. The characters went through a lot in this book but have ways to go yet; I can't wait to see how their relationship develops in Book 2!
I had high hopes getting into it but I sadly could not connect with the book. For me, the FMC felt flat and I have no issue with insta-lust and even insta-love when the fated mates bond is involved but I expected more because it is not a novella. I might try to resume at a later date.

"Rare Prey" takes an unexpected twist with the alien mates romance genre, a premise I wasn't sure would resonate with me. However, Torah Channing skillfully captivated my attention and turned me into a fan of this unique and enthralling story. So much so that I found myself so engrossed in the narrative that I forgot to update my reading tracker—a testament to the book's immersive quality.
One of the noteworthy aspects of this novel is the execution of trigger warnings. As a reader who appreciates being forewarned, I found the inclusion of trigger warnings to be thoughtful and well-handled. Channing navigates sensitive topics with care, providing readers with the information they need while seamlessly integrating it into the storyline. This attention to detail contributes to a reading experience that is both enjoyable and considerate of diverse sensitivities.
"Rare Prey" offers 33 chapters of pure bliss, and I am eager to revisit this extraterrestrial romance. The pacing of the story is well-balanced, keeping the reader engaged from start to finish. "Rare Prey" is a testament to the author's ability to weave a compelling narrative that transcends preconceived notions. I look forward to witnessing the reception of this book and eagerly await future works from Torah Channing.
What a treat! I was surprised by this book and have to start off by saying that I love the winged men style books and I have read a few other series that features this and it is a favorite. I really enjoyed th concept of this book in regard to these beings coming from another planet and crash landing on Earth and being stuck here.
The relationship between Meira moved very fast. Like lightning fast. One minute she was trying to maneuver politely away from a human male who was putting the moves on her and the next she was captured by a winged male who as instantly attracted to her and boom! they got busy and she got his mate mark. The same thing happened twice more and she ends up with 3 mates. It really went a little fast and I admit to a little whiplash, but once it all settled, I really enjoyed their relationship and how they treated Meira. The spicy scenes between her and her males was very nice to read and I enjoyed the one on one and the group play.
This was definitely an interesting read. The animosity between the humans and the winged beings was a bit strange and I personally did not like the things that went on with her human friend Jasper. I was almost rooting for them to keep their friendship but ouch! He really turned down a dark path.
Meira kept everything level throughout the book and really took the twists and turns in stride. Also, all of the personalities of her males were great. I have to say I’m torn between Kyler and Aeron being my favorite. I’m curious as to what the future holds. And just FYI, this does end on a cliff.
The premise of this story is right up my alley. And totally delivered on the reverse harem alien romance aspect of the story. It’s probably closer to a 3.5 star for me. But it deserves the round up rather than round down. Since I flew through the story in less than 24 hours.
I have a hard time with insta love. And where as they do the fated mates I this story. The love develops really fast. But it makes up for it in the way they explore their connections with each other.
It is a little whiplashy because one of the mates is the life long tormentor of the other. And they move past that almost instantly.
However, the world building and plot line were well done. And had me on my toes and edge of my seat while trying to find out where the story was going. There are some dark and twisted parts to this story. So make sure you go in with eyes open and aware.
It ends on a cliffhanger. But nothing that is going to leave you heartbroken. They have a happy for now. And I’m excited to see where the series take us. For a debut novel this is amazing.
I received an ARC of this for free. I am voluntarily leaving this review.
"There is a weird sense of intimacy in this intimidating space between us. He is all danger and death, yet throwing off sensual vibes, and it's messing with my head."
This was my first every alien romance and Torah - I'm glad it was you that popped my cherry. I have had Rare Prey on my tbr for so long. Why haven't I read it yet? Well, I have now, and I loved, loved every single word!
Following Meira on her journey from being a human looking after birds to finding her true mates to the trauma that each of these characters felt was a roller-coaster of emotions. I was hooked from page one! I can't wait to read the rest in the series and find out what happens.
It is indeed a rare prey! If you're looking for a book with instant attraction, instant desire, instant love, a tri-mate bond, a thrilling and unexpected twists, this one's for you. A tri-mate bond— not one mate, not two, but THREE! Imagine the fun they have together.
I don't want to spoil too much, but I have never been so infuriated as I was when I read about what Jared did to Meira! 😡
This book took me on a journey that reminded me of why I love romantasy spicy books! I read this book in a day and loved every second of it! I cannot wait for the second book to come out from this amazing author!
This was such a fun and unique read. I enjoyed so many things about it. I haven't read very many alien romances yet, but I'm not disappointed one bit. I thought the detail was good, and I appreciated the character growth. The cliffhanger has me aching for book 2 immediately.
My heat rating is based on the amount of occurrence, length of scenes, and how filthy/unconventional the scenes are. I would give this a 3/5 🌶.
What I liked about this book was the originality of the alien species: I hadn't read a book about a bird-ish species before. The story is high-paced and packed with action.
That being said, I do wish that there was more worldbuilding. The focus of the story seems to be more on the physical chemistry between the 4 main characters that make up the polycule. I would have liked to get a more in-depth relationship development that didn't revolve around fornication. The smutty scenes were well done. However, at the end of the story, I felt like I didn't know these characters as well as I would have liked.
The story ends on a cliffhanger, and I do think it'll be interesting to see where it's going.
This book took me on a journey that reminded me of why I love romantasy spicy books! I read this book in a day and loved every second of it! I cannot wait for the second book to come out from this amazing author!
