Honestly this one could have used more time in the oven. The pacing felt a bit off, and the language used made it seem like it was a second draft or something. The story itself wasn't too bad, but it just needs some more work.
The Derelict is a sci-fi/horror novella about a salvage ship which encountered a drifting barge and during a trip to the derelict barge, a member of the crew encounters an unexplained illness which causes him to become homicidal. Given that this is a novella, we don't get to know the characters, they remain somewhat one dimensional. The pace is fast and matches the plot well. The dialogue is OK, but only OK. Overall, 3/5 stars, recommended for fans is sci-fi and horror.
I found the book to be poorly written. The tenses are mixed up and ,IMO, incorrectly used. Present tense, future and past tense seem to be just thrown together and used in a glaringly incongruous way. The book was hard to read because each time I found something that I felt was incorrectly or improperly used, it jolted me out of the story and made me question what I had read. Because of that, the story didn’t flow for me. I found the story rushed and pushed into an unsatisfying ending.
I don’t normally write reviews but in this case, I’ll make an exception. Overall the book was just bad. Bad sentence structure, bad spelling, bad punctuation, bad grammar. It felt like an AI dump. There was obviously no editing involved. Unfortunately, the story lacked imagination and excitement. Skip this one.
A decent story, to be sure. It needs a good proof reading and some serious line edits. Typos, and grammar and spelling mistakes GALORE. Overall, a good story that could use a prolog to tie in to the ending, but the makings of a fine story nonetheless. Enjoyable if you aren't bothered by misspellings and grammar mistakes.
I didn't like much of the stunted dialogue and lack of tension for a thriller that didn't build up enough. Though it was short and helped my reading goal it was just a curiosity when I saw it advertised. Needs work on grammar, punctuation, and certain missing words that killed the reading flow for me sometimes.
