A Game in the Life: A Personal Journey Through Timeless Video Games

Rate this book
Video games are a nostalgia-producing machine, and A Game In The Life breaks down over a dozen timeless titles to see what makes them so compelling years after release. Looking back at classic titles like Capcom's Mega Man 2 and Square Enix's Final Fantasy VI, in addition to more recent games like BioWare's Mass Effect 2 and FromSoftware's Dark Souls, Jordan Rudek shares his insights as an avid player, reviewer, and lover of all things video game. Interwined with discussions and descriptions of these incredible digital works are a series of recollections and memories of the life moments Rudek experienced when he came upon these games. The result is an autobiographical dive into the times and events surrounding a collection of memorable video games, mixed with storytelling and a flair for the dramatic. Ultimately, A Game In The Life seeks to highlight how video games can have a lasting and profound effect on those who enjoy them, and how they can serve as miniature time capsules of the periods in our lives when they brought us so much joy.

Immersing myself in the pages of this captivating book was like embarking on a heartfelt journey through the corridors of nostalgia. The author skillfully weaves a tapestry of memories, seamlessly blending the cherished moments of their life with the profound impact of video games. As I read, I couldn't help but be swept away by the vivid recollections of virtual worlds, particularly the eloquent homage paid to the iconic Mass Effect 2.

The way the author articulates the profound influence of video games on their life is nothing short of enchanting. Settlers of Catan becomes a metaphorical landscape where life's lessons are learned and friendships are forged, echoing the real-world impact of these digital realms. The intersection of personal narrative and gaming anecdotes is masterfully executed, creating a literary mosaic that resonates with anyone who has found solace, joy, or profound meaning in the pixels and polygons of their favorite titles.

This book is not just a celebration of gaming but a profound exploration of the symbiotic relationship between the author and the virtual worlds they inhabited. Whether reliving the gripping narrative of Mass Effect 2 or strategizing in the vast landscapes of Settlers of Catan, every page exudes a genuine passion for the transformative power of video games. A must-read for anyone who has ever found a profound connection within the immersive realms of pixels and code.

In full disclosure I ended up in touch with the author and getting a free copy of the eBook for the purposes of giving it a review afterwards. Once I finished the book I went and bought my own eBook copy from Amazon as I enjoyed the book and wanted to fully support it and the author Jordan Rudek.

As a fellow lifelong video game player in my mid 40's this book and it's concept immediately had my attention. And as someone who has personally played every single game that is singled out in this book aside from one (and it's a series I'm very familiar with just haven't played this one particular entry yet) I can only review this as someone coming at it with my own knowledge and attachment to games, especially these mentioned in this book.

I really like the quick nature of this book. It's a quick read and a fun and enjoyable one as well. Getting to re-experience these games through someone else's own lens was really quite interesting. And I don't think you need intimate knowledge of these games to get the passion and interest in them from the author.

If you have a love of video games as a whole and want to experience key games and moments of someone's life intertwined with them then this is an easy recommendation to make.

'A Game In The Life' is an engaging, accessible journey through the world of gaming and personal discovery, with heartfelt anecdotes and insightful reflections as the author 'levels up'. Jordan's passion for gaming leaps off the pages, and each chapter invites the reader to relish in his captivating recollection and storytelling, covering timeless classic titles like 'The Legend of Zelda', 'Super Mario 64', and 'Tetris'. With broader themes of friendship, personal growth and overcoming challenges tied in, 'A Game In The Life' stands as an ode to the profound and lasting impact of gaming on a personal level. After reading I was hit with my own wave of nostalgia and reflection on the various games I've played throughout my life, and their lasting impact on it. For anyone who's ever touched a video game in their life, I highly recommend this book!

The chronological order of game releases with the chapters made this book fun and enjoyable for a mid-30s man such as myself! I felt like I could have been the author or any of the miscellaneous childhood gamer-nerds (like me) that the author mentions over the years.
A great read for a gamer husband or gamer dad. Video games do imitate life!

A nostalgic and thoroughly fun read! Jordan really brings you into the world of each game and perfectly matches his own life stories. If you grew up in the 80’s or 90’s (or even if you didn’t) this is a no brainer read down memory lane!
