Leaving his homeland for the first time, Jason is thrust into a world teeming with peril. Hunted by the ruthless Lightguard for uncovering their dark plot, he flees deeper into the treacherous Canyonlands.
But power is elusive, and the path to it, perilous. The enigmatic Citadel, the very heart of his enemy, holds the key. Deep in the city's ancient bowels, a secret, potent enough to alter the course of history lies hidden. One so dangerous, people are willing to kill to keep it buried.
Jason must delve deeper into his mastery of shadow-weaving to challenge the Lightguard and confront an Emperor's tyranny. Navigating a labyrinth of deceit and betrayal, Jason must discern friend from foe. In a world where every shadow could harbor a dagger, Jason’s best chance may lie with a clandestine rebellion of whispers and fragile alliance.
As war looms over the Canyonlands, the fate of its people is in Jason's hands.
The only complaint I have on thise book was the editing. Some of it needed some touch up and wording changes for flow purposes. Other than those minor things, this story was absolutely fantastic. The world building grows even further from book 1 and we are introduced to a wider and more complex cast of characters. Jason makes some amazing strides in his weaving and does some pretty incredible things throughout this book. The story overall was well written. The stakes from the first book are expanded upon and blown way up making all hope seemingly lost at points but then you realize you still have hundreds of pages left and realize this can't be the end. I definitely reccomend this book if you love fantast, a cool magic system, some cultivation themes and tons of others like friendship, sacrifice, standing up for what's right, ect.... I could go on and on. I can't wait for book 3!
This book took a massive step down in quality for me. Not so much in the writing itself but more in the actual story telling and plotting.
The last book had such promise of the huge world we’re stepping into with our MC vs the world. The decision for the mc to be the head of this uprising for a city we don’t know or care about was baffling to me. I was so bored with the narrative
The magic system seems to have plateaued. I just wasn’t engaged with the progression of the magic or the exploration like I was in the first book.
Their entire life, faith, and prophets were a lie. The valley burned, but they survived. Having learned about the Lightguard climbs out of the valley to find among them a cure for his father’s affliction. He will find that the world is so much bigger than his valley.
This cultivation series has been really interesting. It’s been fun to learn more about the other types of mana users other than shadow. The history of this world is very well fleshed out. I’m excited for the next book! While there was a narrator change, Kevin Brown did a great job with the narration.
