He's a Fae prince, and I'm the girl with a knack for chaos. Now, in the Sun Court's twisted drama, we're not just fighting for our freedom; we're fighting to keep our love alive.
I’m Gracie Smith, the messed-up advertising assistant who managed to dodge a bullet and stop a Fae plot to mess up the mortal realm. Victory? Sure, but life's got a wicked sense of humor. Now, Hawk and I, my unlikely lover - him being a Fae prince and me a regular mess - find ourselves trapped in the hostile Sun Court. And it's not all sunshine and rainbows. Beneath the dazzling exterior of the Sun Court, there's trouble brewing – and we’re right in the thick of it. They’ve got us pinned as the culprits in a robbery and aren’t in the mood for mercy.
Hawk's Fae senses are in overdrive, and my knack for landing in hot water has never been more reliable. Together, we have to find a way to unravel the twisted threads of this crime and expose the real troublemakers, because if we don't, freedom's just a pipe dream.
And our fledgling relationship will be over before it’s begun.
The Sun Court might be dazzling, but beneath the surface, it's a game of shadows, and we're playing for keeps. Will we crack the case, break free from this golden prison, and come out on top? Stick around, and let the games begin.
This is book five of the Shadow Court series and the main characters are fated mates, human Gracie Smith and Fae Prince Firian of the Shadow Court, known as Hawk, who were supposed to be portalling to the centre of his court, yet end up in the middle of the Sun Court of the Unseelie, his enemies and beings who hate mortals. Gracie was a marketing manager until she found her boss was actually a Fae and her boyfriend Taviel, had actually used his Fae glamour on her to enslave her. The two of them wanted her connection to her best friend, who is the fated mate of the King of the Shadow Court, Hawk’s brother. Guards throw them into prison cells on separate ends of the palace, until Seshra, First Builder of the Sun Court, comes to speak to Gracie, who inadvertently gives her true name, her full name, giving Seshra power over her to get the truth. Seshra believes them to be spies and wants to know what they had to do with a theft from her court just a few days ago. But for some reason, fate has brought Hawk and Gracie to the Sun Court and he has to promise they won’t try to leave until they have permission to, in an effort to solve what has been happening and get back to the Shadow Court without causing a war, instead of the peace between different Fae Courts that Raven has had visions of.
A lot of the Unseelie Fae find the fact a mortal is in their presence to be offensive, but having a Fae Prince of the Shadow Court there is possibly worse, with their people being enemies of old and always at war. Hawk has to curb his anger and the fact he and Gracie keep getting separated in their quest for answers, but they manage to get some of the Unseelie Fae to believe in them. There are still some that don’t like them being there and are also against Sersha’s rule, with a large number who were loyal to her brother Taviel, who has caused a lot of problems for the Sun Court, making their magic go haywire, causing destruction to a large part of their Court. Something none of the Sun Court want Hawk to know about. But Hawk and Gracie need to find out who the real culprits are for the theft and what they are really after, or they won’t get their freedom. It seems Gracie is going to come across her former foe and have her mind messed with again by an Unseelie Fae, and she is going to have to try and stay strong to overcome them one more. An unexpected coming together of the two leaders, to try and stop the magic in the Sun Court destroying anymore of their court, gets interrupted by those fighting against Seshra, who have their own agenda and were behind the theft at the Sun Court. Danger is being brought back to the mortal realm and Gracie wants to get there as soon as possible to stop them, but that isn’t quite as easy as she hoped. First they must return to the Shadow Court and that might bring a few issues of its own, especially since they are bringing some extra fae with them, who may not be quite as welcome! Still more to come from this series and I look forward to seeing what comes next. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Mask of the Fae by K J Baker 5/5 Action-packed fantasy thriller This tale is from Gracie and Hawk’s pov. A fast moving, action-packed story that deals with overcoming hatred and prejudices. Arch enemies discover compassion for each other and become allies. A mere mortal helps the Fae to realise how the Summer Court can be healed. I loved the humour and fighting scenes and how so many of the characters were forced to change their minds about each other. Loved the in-between times magic and how Gracie is still subject to enchantment by the hostile Fae. Neatly written with a plot line that links to previous stories in the series and hints at more action come!
This was probably the best book in the series so far. I think Gracie is a way better character than Asha and her story, while similar, is more entertaining. I do have two complaints… this book left off where we started. I was hoping to see the end of Felena Sand.
My second complaint is the covers of these books are terrible! The man on the front does not resemble anyone in the story, nobody has a big chest tattoo either. I think if the author were to give these books a more fantasy novel style cover (a sword or some shadowy mist etc…) this series would be way more popular. The current covers make this series look like a cheesy smut book with no plot, which it isn’t.
