Hades #3

Club 22

Rate this book
Club 22 is the THIRD in a new Shadow Grove series. Several characters cross over to the Madison Kate series but it is not necessary to read MK's story first. HADES is a contemporary new adult reverse harem series, which means the leading lady has several love interests and never has to choose in order to find her HEA.

◆◆◆

They say to keep your enemies close and mine are all around me. At the heart of it are four dangerously gorgeous men. The man who wants to light my darkness and already paid the price for loving me. The man who can handle my power and loves every dark inch of me. The man who has been my closest companion and now threatens to upend our carefully balanced world in pursuit of me.

But the fourth man is probably the most terrifying. He wants to take the others away. He wants to tear the spinal column out my empire. Destroy my businesses. Destroy me.

Why?

Because the man who should have stayed dead wants me and he will stop at nothing until he’s carved out my bloody, beating heart and left me broken.

He should remember who he’s dealing with…I’m not the girl he knew anymore.

I’m Hades.

This time when death comes for him, I’ll make sure it sticks.

WHY DO YOU WANT TO HURT ME, TATE JAMES?! Oh my my my- Club 22 emulates everything we’ve come to love about it’s fiery heroine- it’s gritty, sexy, unapologetic, bold, and utterly savage. But, as we come to find in this brilliant fete of storytelling, like Hades, this novel is about the big beating heart at the core.

Like so many Tate stories, our prior Hades outing ending in yet another cataclysmic cliffhanger, one that left one of our characters bleeding out on the floor and the delicate romantic entanglements of our fierce heroine in tatters. I can’t speak much about this plot, or even really our remaining characters, without spoiling- and though I know you’re all dying to know just what led to that heartbreaking moment, this series, more than any other series, is meant to shock and ensnare you. I spent much of the book being gobsmacked- by the surprises, the secrets, the panty exploding steam, and the fantastic character evolutions of each and every character, small and big. But mostly, I spent this story in awe of the delicious and twisted story telling unfolding with each passing page. This is by far Tate’s most ambitious narrative-and not just because it is her most complicated and most twisted, but because of the profoundly riveting depth of our title character.

LIke I mentioned in the beginning, Club 22 is about heart. And to explore heart, Tate has to rip down the walls of Hades moment by moment, kiss by kiss, betrayal by betrayal, and emotion by emotion. Hades is an image- a carefully constructed armor that our leading lady has donned everyday since her trauma, a persona she puts on every morning like her Louboutin heels. Club 22 lets us finally see Hayden more clearly- we’ve seen glimmers, the brief flashes of her inspired by gumdrop in particular, but in Club 22 Tate let’s us immerse in her more and more. Our hardened, fierce, and brutal queen has a broken and lost girl, a girl who just wants to be seen, a girl with a lot of baggage and unexamined self-hatred. Hades was built on solitude, violence, and pain, but Hayden is being reborn from connection, love, and healing. Hades has no safety so she engineered it for herself, but now she’s exposed in a way she hasn’t been before- her greatest vulnerability is loving others, NEEDING others. And Club 22 explores that beautifully- both Hayden herself but also Hayden and her crew. Hayden is learning to lean into her heart, and those around her are also exposed, just in different ways. Ultimately, Club 22 is about vulnerability and truth- until now these characters have never been or explored the full parts of their identity. They’ve all hid something, repressed or denied- and Club 22 is about exposing them fully- so they can figure out how they all work together.

And the Hades-Hayden dynamic is what makes this series the best Tate has written- because she's developing not one but TWO characters as she writes these aspects of our heroine's identity. And no heroine of Tate's has ever had this much baggage, this many layers to unpack, this much nuance. And to make sure her harem is WORTHY of that level of complexity, Tate has also paired Hades with a harem with equal complexity and nuance with entirely unique dynamics and a female-centered power dynamic. This leaves a tall task for Tate in her finale book- but one I know she can conquer- the task of fusing the various parts of Hades/Hayden into one owned identity, merging the present and the past, so that Hades emerges as the self she chooses for the future. BUT THERE IS SO MUCH BAGGAGE!

We have a lot of action, A TON of steamy times, more secrets and mystery, and the breadcrumbs to a finale that seems to be both a battle of past and present- because for Hades to emerge as Hayden, for her to find the nexus of both parts of herself, she’s not only going to need to open her heart, like she’s done here, but she’s also going to have to confront what is inside it- the dark trauma and pain that created her. That destroyed parts of her. Chase is on the red herring- Hades’ true battle is going to be with her own brokenness. And it’s going to hurt.

I have read A LOT of Tate James cliffhangers, but I have never been as destroyed by one as I was by this one. Yes, you read that correctly, this one is WORSE than the one in the book prior- and that one almost killed me. Because this finale hurts our characters in their very core- and the wait until the finale is going to be brutal. I am devastated and raw- but so very in love with this world and these characters. There is nothing like it- and I’m desperate for more!

“How had all three of my love interests grown balls big enough to rival my own?”

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙💚💜❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘
World building: 🌎🌍🌏🌎
Character development: 🤐🤫🫣
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Duet Narration

The heroine: Hayden Darling Timber (a.k.a. Hades, a.k.a. Daria Wolfe, a.k.a. Dare) - She runs both legitimate businesses and a crime syndicate. She first took power after killing her father and instigating a massacre of the Lockwood family who was into sex trafficking of minors. That massacre included shooting her former abusive fiancée in the face.

The Heroes: Lucas (a.k.a. Gumdrop), Cass (a.k.a. Grumpy Cat), Zed (a.k.a. Zeddy Bear) - Lucas is model handsome and has a great heart but there are things in his past that are just coming to light, Cass is a former MMA fighter and current gang leader and is a growly monster of a man, Zed is the tough as nails, best friend to Hades and has been in love with her for years.

The Story: Now that Hades knows who it is that has been sabotaging her life and her businesses, she is determined to get him, though her and her men are always a step behind. So when she was betrayed by someone close to her, she had no choice but to take action. Now her and her men are dealing with the fallout and trying to get ahead of their foe.

You know what I hate about some romance books, especially ones with intrigue and dangerous situations? When something big happens and instead of the characters talking about what happened or what information they found, things get steamy and they get busy. I am always just waiting for the intimate scene to get over so they can get down to business. I don’t know why they can’t wait until after everything comes out to jump on each other.

This book had a good plot and I liked the plot about their nemesis trying to destroy their businesses and lives, though I kind of wished they would somehow be more prepared for what he does and playing a bit of offense instead of always playing defense when it came to the sabotage. It got a bit predictable and repetitive. Also the fact that Hades kept her bratty sister in the dark about everything for so long is annoying, to say the least. The fact that Persephone is so bratty and clueless despite what keeps happening around her got on my nerves to no end.

I am loving the duet narration by Noelle Bridges and Lucas Webley. Though after listening to this entire series in duet narration it will be hard to go back to books done in dual or solo narration. So few books are done in duet and I just hate when the female narrator does male voices and vice versa. I am getting a little spoiled listening to these audiobooks.

How is this series so addicting? I don't want to spoil anything from the rest of the series, but the villain is still up to his usual shenanigans and posing a threat to Hades and her guys. I still love the relationship she has with all of the guys and their dynamic together. She definitely solidifies her relationship with more of them, but I do wish we had more Lucas! We got a ton of him in the previous book and I feel like the other guys got a lot more page time than him. But I really liked the more suspense moments in this book and I am freaking out about that ending! I need book four now!! This series is just so entertaining and I eat each book up like candy!

”He was the lighthouse in the storm. He was my safe place. My saving grace.”

the author has a formula with these RH books and i started to grow tired of it in this one. i was dying for Zayden to get his moment, so those parts i did enjoy. i actually like all the men but don’t feel any attachment to them. technically, the stakes are supposed to be high, but i don’t FEEL that. Hayden and her sister were both acting so immature, she goes out of her way to make sure Lucas can defend himself but doesn’t give those same opportunities to her own sister. Chase doesn’t come across as a threat to me, just a man child who goes off the rails when he doesn’t get his way. this was unnecessarily long and repetitive, the ending was something that’s literally been done in both the Madison Kate series and the previous book in this series.. boring.

I really hate that I accidentally spoiled the ending for myself… I didn’t mean to do it!
I just read the first line of the next book’s blurb and… yup, had about half of this book to think about it.

Tate always has some sort of ‘author’s note’ at the back of her books. I really like that it’s an added way of communicating with her readers. She makes a comment that this book is s*x heavy. And boy, is it!!

I mean, good for Hayden and her boys but seriously… It was a bit much.
Anyway, Tate says there's a reason so I’ll trust her on that.

Moving on, I loved that we learned a little more of Cass and his past.
There were some answers to Lucas’ past, though that kind of bit Hades in the butt.

Something I wish would’ve happened earlier with MK and her boys happened in this book with Hades and her guys so that was good!

I enjoyed getting deeper into Hades mind, her trauma and past. It’s amazing to get an understanding of why a character acts the way they do.

Seph has never been a likable character for me. She was fine in her brief appearance within the first series but here, she really is a bratty, spoiled girl.
I hope she has more development in the next (and last!) book.

Four stars because… I mean, the sex scenes were done well.
And no complaints about the audio version, to boot!

I am at a loss for words on how to express my love for this book. Words just don't do it justice.

As I read this series, I have noticed that Tate James leaves you absolutely loving her characters. Even though I don't love Hades as much as MK (she's just the best nobody tops her), she is still an amazing character and seeing her soften to those around her just warms my heart. She is the definition of hard exterior, soft interior. First the Cass BS from the last book and now Zeddy Bear? UGH TATE WHY??? She really makes you fall in love with her characters and ride through the journey with them.

This book was filled with so much action and spice; I was here for it!! While this did take me a bit longer to read compared to her other books, I was invested the entire time. I was on the edge of my seat eating up every single page. I truly cannot express how much I would recommend a Tate James book. I am determined to read everything by her cause I know I will LOVE IT!!! This gives off mafia vibes while sticking to the thriller, why choose, reverse harem GEM!

Overall, there is not a book by Tate that I wouldn't recommend. I can't wait to dive into the last book in this series and deal with the CLIFFHANGER that was the ending of this book. Nobody does it like Tate James 🙂‍↔️❤️

Am I ready to continue crying? Yes.

I don’t even have words, except, WHAT THE HECK TATE JAMES!! Are you trying to send me to an early grave, I mean gees give a girl some warning.

This story was action-packed, full of mystery, trauma, love, loss and so much more! I loved seeing Hayden start to shed her tough exterior (at least around those she loves and trusts) as she started to give into her true feelings and let those be reciprocated openly. Despite Hayden’s past trauma, which she has handled with immense strength, the connection and bonds she started to form with not only her men, but those she came to know as friends was fantastic.

One thing I absolutely NEVER saw coming was the ending! TATE MOTHERF**KING JAMES...WTF! I literally started cussing up a storm around my house as soon as that ball dropped. Tate James freaking shattered me with this revelation...that two sides of every story she mentioned in the end notes better be true and give me my heart back tenfold! Grrr...it’s a good thing I LOVE Tate James’ phenomenal stories (LOL, I kid, but come on).

I LOVED this book! I was completely and utterly transfixed as I read this story. I never wanted it to end, and when it did I was mentally begging Tate for the next book! SO FREAKING FANTASTIC!

The thing about Tate James’ cliffhangers that I’m noticing is that they’re quickly resolved in the following book, with little to no impact on the overall story or relationship.

The twists, suspense, and cliffhanger were definitely more wild in this book.

I’m rooting for Hades and liking her journey (with herself, her sister, the guys) but I can tell this isn’t going to be a favorite series for me.

Now, this cliffhanger this one right here, this one shocked the heck out of me. I wouldn't have been able to see that coming if you had PAID me.

4.5 stars

Out of all the books in this quartest, this one had the most bangs (if you catch my drift). Honestly, I had been waiting for Zed and Hayden to finally make their move and it did NOT disappoint. I normally am "meh" towards friends-to-lovers, but they are delicious. Also, this is the one where everyone in the harem learns how well-hung Lucas is and it is just my favourite thing ever. Legit, love when the men compare sizes.

Always, can we take a second to appreciate all the nicknames?
Lucas: Gumdrop
Cass: Grumpy Cat
Zed: Zeddy Bear

DONT EVER END A BOOK LIKE THIS TATE ITS A WARNING 😭😭 MY HEART CANNOT HANDLE SO MUCH. remind me again never to read tate james book until the whole series is finished cuz now i am suffering until Timber releases 🥺. As much as i love Cass and Lucas, Zayden is my absolute favourite. I loved the first 2 books but this one felt flat for me until the very end. Things were repetitive, the 4 things that happened in this books were sex, eating, sleeping and going to club... kind of boring but the ending, fucking ending broke me. Holllyyy shiitttt the ending 😭😭🤚 stop tate dont do that again.

This was the stupidest fucking cliffhanger I've ever read in my life. Not only because I didn't like it. There have been plenty of cliffhangers that I was like 'Oh, I hate that but that is the most clever thing I've ever read' this was not one of those times. How are you going to pick the CHILDHOOD FRIEND/ BUSINESS PARTNER to be the undercover FBI agent? When would he have joined? They have seen each other daily since they started training to be assassins at age 15 so you'll have to excuse me if I have my doubts that he was able to sneak away to become a fed. Also and this stands for like 15 different plot points- you cannot have it both ways. You either get to have 45 internal dialogs about how badass Hades is and about how she runs shadow grove OR you get to have her get her ass handed to her at every turn. She literally has not been ahead of Chase at any point other than the one time that a supposed traitor (which again is where I feel like you pulled this one out of your ass) had a camera hidden.

I don't want to read book 4. I get it- I'm 75% in at this point so my sunk cost is going to kill me but if I had any way to get the summary (and I will look) without actually having to read the probably 500 pages because we all know Tate James does not know what an Editor is) then I will.

This book is a whole ass train wreck. If I could rate it negatively I would.

As the story unfolds, alliances are tested and questioned, and Hades is navigating the complexities of love, power, and doubt in a world where enemies are all around.
It's an amazing read! I really enjoy this series 👌 It has a good mix of everything and is highly entertaining and addictive - I couldn’t put it down!
Such emotional depth and tense plot twists, including a shocking betrayal!

“She’d dived headfirst into the gauntlet of fire and come out harder than titanium”

Chapter four hit me out of knowhere. I mean I figured that a main character wouldn’t be killed off but I had no idea that THAT is what happened. Holy shit. I started reading it and I literally screamed! If you know, you know.

Also… sex starts in this chapter. That’s like 32 pages into the book. Thank you Tate James. 😜

Zeddy Bear? Gumdrop? Cassiel Idiot Saint?!
Grumpy Cat??

As Hades is establishing her relationships with her men, they are still dealing with her ex fiancé. I don’t know what’s wrong with me but I like him you guys! He’s just so horrible and psychotic that I get excited whenever he’s in a scene. Am I a fucking freak for this?

“I wasn’t fighting this war with chase alone. I never had been, with Zed at my back. But this time I also had Cass and Lucas, and goddamn if we weren’t forced to be fucking reckoned with.”

This is a type of book where I can’t really get too much into the plot because it would give things away. This is not a standalone. You must start with 7th Circle. While there is a ton of sex, the established relationship aspect- to me, in my opinion, is a slow burn. It’s a juicy slow burn.
But this book, Club 22, we have some established relationships and the L word gets thrown around. It makes my romantic heart giddy with joy but there’s no time for too much lovey-dovey stuff because not only do we have the drama with her ex fiancé but Hades younger sister gets herself into a bit of trouble in this book as well.
Each guy seems to have secrets they are holding onto. And it’s interesting to try to figure out what the hell is going on behind the scenes. The ending which is an absolute cliffhanger, blew my mind. But I am pretty confident in saying that I know what’s going on. If my guess is correct, I won’t be surprised. I can’t really say much else. You have to start the series though if you haven’t yet!

TATE JAMES I HAVE A SERIOUS QUESTION!!!! WHO HURT YOU?????? TELL ME WHO!!!!!
I don't even have enough words to express the anger that this book series is bringing out of me. And I mean that in the best way possible. It's just the cliffhangers and the lies and betrayal are unmatched and I don't think I have the mental capacity to go through this again!! I love these characters so much that when something like what happened at this end of this book actually happens I want to tear the world apart! I am so livid but I trust Tate James too much. So I know she will make it all make sense and if she doesn't............. OH MAN I WILL RIOT!!!

Ok first she hurt me with the end of Anarchy. Now this. THIS!! I cannot! I have to wait until September for this next book?!?! How am I suppose to function?! I love Tate’s writing style though it’s just addictive and I cannot stop reading or wanting more! Did this book just arrive in my mailbox today? Yep. Did I read until 2am to finish it? Sure did. Am I now heartbroken and deep in the throes of a book hangover. Hell yeah I am! 😩😂 So if you can’t tell, I highly recommend this book. You should go read the MK series then this one! Immediately!

Beyond unsatisfying.

I started skimming the pages hoping to get more than I was given but in the end not even the cliffhanger at the end could save this for me (especially since Tate James seems to throw in shocking twists on the last page that get resolved in half a chapter in the next book and have no lasting consequences for any of the characters). After reading all of MK's books and three of Hades' everything feels repetitive and I'm beyond ready to leave Shadow Grove for good.
