Stupendous, amazing. I reviewed the NYRB English selected edition here, which I'm gradually adding to now that I can go through the original.

Only read years [1851 to 1858] included, 405 pages with plenty of bottom page notes.
Interesting primarily as it points to "minor" (or supposedly minor) authors, long forgotten authors of theatre plays or popular novels or drawings sketchers focused about the working classes and the entertainment scene in the mid 18th century. Please note that it gets boring in 1857 and 1858, sometimes chaotic and full of self indulgent cryptic prose.
But where else would I have heard of artists such as Gavarni, Alphonse Kerr, Celestin Nanteuil, Léon Gozlan, De Banville, Ponsard, De Kock, Théo Barrière, Monnier, Champfleury, Aurélien Scholl, Henri Murger or Théodore Chasseriau ?
Next step will be [1868-1873] in volume II , should take a fortnight.
