You may know who this actor is, and yes, you may really love this musician. Or, hey, you may actually despise them.
But do you know about their contributions to civil rights causes?
Or to science?
Or what they’ve overcome just to survive in a world that saw them as lesser because of the body they were born into?
Did you know that one of today’s greatest activists started her political activities picketing with Girl Scouts to protest racial segregation?
Or that one of the great singer-songwriters of our time overcame a near-fatal encounter with polio which affected how she learned to play guitar?
Did you know that this television chef not only served in the United States Navy but also held a top-secret clearance and created a shark repellant that is still used today?
Join me in discovering more about women you may have already heard of and many more that you might not have.
Having worked every job from teacher’s assistant and logistics manager to phone sex operator and ‘voice of’ an escort service, not to mention professional stand-up comedian, it’s a small wonder Lisa Lee Curtis is, thus far, the only one in her family without a criminal record.
Winner of multiple completely irrelevant comedy contests, a bourbon-soaked guest on numerous radio shows, and lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time so that she could perform alongside Robin Williams, Lisa has switched gears to yelling at people on the internet and advocating for the LGBTQ+ community as well as for reproductive healthcare to remain safe and accessible.
There are three things I love about this book (and about Volume I).
1) I've learned so much about a number of women I'd either not heard of or whose stories I did not know
2) I love Lisa's writing style. It's approachable and humorous while being respectful to the women whose stories she shares, and properly disrespectful to the ones who often tried to push or hold these women down.
3) Each of the biographies are long enough to capture the essence of what makes these women remarkable, but short enough to digest in a single sitting.
This is the perfect book to read when you feel like you need encouragement. These women truly are badass and Lisa’s writing brings their stories to you in an entertaining and informative way. You won’t be about to put it down, if you superglue the book to your hands. (The rest of us can but we won’t want to.)
