What I have tried to do is capture the essence of a decade in New York as I experienced it. It was a time and place when I was young and adventurous, surrounded by treasured friends and parents who supported and adored me. Mother and Dad may be gone now, but most of those friends are still with me and my “chosen family” has made this continue to be a wonderful, exciting life. This book is only Part One. Wait until you hear about the 1990s in Hollywood!
I could not put down Nelson Aspen's excellent autobiographical fiction work. Well-written, Dancing Between the Raindrops, features a gay, recent high school grad who comes to New York City in 1980 to pursue an acting career. The book entertainingly brings the 1980s to life again. The likable, witty TJ Porter (the fictional character based on the author) explores his sexuality and navigates life in the Big Apple with various friends, lovers, and jobs that take him on a life-changing journey from acting Off-Broadway, to a stint on a beloved soap opera, then on to teaching aerobics classes at top gyms and spas in NYC, LA, and Italy during the dawn of the fitness boom. Highly recommended.
I truly enjoyed reading this book and to be honest was a bit upset when it ended. Then, I found out there’s a part 2 coming out! Nelson’s warmth and wit truly shine through. This book takes you through the many truly fascinating and sometimes difficult experiences and maze of wild events that ultimately connect the dots of how he got to be who he is and how his multifaceted career began. The book is intertwined with the warmth and love of his core friendships, his erotic intimacies and taking chances no matter how crazy they seemed. It’s thought provoking while also being feel good. I loved it and am so looking forward to the continuation.
