Purgaterry

Rate this book
The Afterlife has a flyover state, and it's called Purgatory.

Overlooked, often misunderstood, and exactly where Terry ends up.

After taking her own life, Terry isn't met with pearly gates or fire and brimstone, but with gray office buildings and a crummy apartment. She wakes up on Purgatory's lowest level with no memory of her life, a lot of questions, and a job to work off the years she had left on Earth as a Soul Shepherd in the hope of achieving a better ultimate destination.

She meets Dean, her quippy, sarcastic manager who evades her questions at every turn, but whose help Terry will need if she ever has a chance to move forward or find out who she used to be. And with the help of new friends who know what it's like to be stuck in limbo, she's determined to make the best of a weird situation.

Besides...she's already dead, what's the worst that could happen?

Now I'm not the best reviewer of books in the world, and a lot of times I can be a little too generous with my friends and their creations, but still I really had fun reading this story. Don't get me wrong though, there are flaws that I will explain in a little bit, but I really enjoyed the unique idea and the characters seen throughout the story. It's probably not a book for those who experienced grief this way, but it could also maybe offer closure, I could be wrong on that front. Dealing with death is hard and we all view it differently. So what happens to our main character Terry before the book even starts is one of the most tragic things that can happen to you, it's definitely not something to be taken lightly by any means, but this story makes what happens after really interesting. I like the idea that you have to work to move on once you have died, it's not as easy as it sounds either, it could take years for some. I really liked the subtle hint that purgatory could be like Dante's nine circles of hell, only they are more like departments you have to work in to move up. It's a clever idea. The characters are fun, I really liked the character Dean, he's stern but sweet. He wants to help Terry but he does it in a way that makes her work for it. Like the interactions with the characters are very well done. Like Chapter 6 has this lovely feel to it like I want to eat those pancakes that Terry is enjoying. I like hearing the conversation Dean is having with Edie the waitress at the restaurant. It just is a cozy feeling chapter and I loved it.
I really liked how Terry was curious about why she was there and I liked how she did have friends to help her along the way like Willow, Juliet, Puck and Asher. They all had interesting quirks about them. Willow was especially fun and she had some memorable moments with Terry that I liked. The more I think about it too, the more I realize that even though she was bouncy and spunky, she seemed to have an air of calmness that kept her from being an annoying character and I liked her presence.
But now I must come to the part that has the flaws. The book left me with a few questions that I would love to have gotten answers to. And I really hope she can continue with another story because I have questions. Like one character in particular was Delilah, she is mentioned a lot, but it never feels like she is fleshed out enough, like who was she really? What made her the way she was and why did she single out Terry specifically? Like I feel there could have been a great part to the story in there. Like the last part did feel a little rushed like it needed a little more umpf or something, I'm not sure. It just felt like it was missing part of the story that it needed.
Still this is definitely a story I recommend for those who are looking for a unique idea and premise. Not a lot of action happens, but that's okay, not all stories need that. Sometimes a good story is just told by those who are in the moment, taking it all in like Terry is in this story. So check it out when you have the time. You will not regret it.

The storyline, plot, and character building was really nice along with the comedic and adventurous aspects. It was a little slower for me to get through but over all it was a good read!

A really fun read and very uplifting for anyone struggling with depression or feeling like they aren't good enough. Right up your alley if you enjoy shows like Dead Like Me.
