A note on the series: The Secret Chronicles of Lost Magic' is a collection of standalone epic fantasy novels rather than a series. Each novel is a complete story that invites readers to fully immerse into a rich fantasy world. Each ‘Chronicle’ is set in a different era within the same world and can be read in any order, but here’s the chronology for interested readers:
#1 The Raven – a ‘prehistoric’ era #2 Dragonshade – a ‘Bronze Age’ era #3 The Veridian Wars (2 books) – a 'classical' era

From high fantasy to paranormal, Aderyn's stories cover the broad spectrum of Fantasy. Inspired from childhood by the wonder and mystique of Susan Cooper's 'The Dark is Rising' and the adventures in Tolkien's 'The Hobbit', her love of the Fantasy genre has been life long. As a writer, Aderyn brings characters and places to life in stories filled with magic, mystery, and a good dollop of mayhem.
Aderyn studied Literature, History and Creative Writing at university, travelled the world, and taught English before becoming a full-time writer. She is also a part-time farmer passionate about self-sufficiency and poultry. She lives in a cosy cottage on a small farm in Victoria, Australia with partner Peter, their dog, cat, and a little duck called Snow.
It took several chapters of the story to even figure out what was going on. There is an intro that explains that you do not have to read a book before this. I hope that there could be some sort of a prequel.
Grigos, Barabas, Arete, Hera and Drusa are the main characters, each with their own chapters. There is no order and some have more chapters than others. The timeframe is also spread out as you go into different parts. The layout of the story made me think of Game of Thrones since there were different places where the book/show would jump around.
Again it took several chapters to even catch onto what was going on, especially when the main character switched and there was not a very good clear connection between them until way into the book.
There is a book 2 to come, but this one was so long, it would have been better to have a more concise layout and have more events that build up the actual stairs that reach point of the story. Grigor easily became my favorite character and the way this ended, I don’t know where he was even headed since he did have a purpose since the first chapter. I thought he was more important in the story than he was brought up. One of the parts did not even include him. I honestly think I’ll look for the next book just to see where he and his friend Jxi journeyed to.

4.25 stars This is the kind of fantasy that reminds me why I started enjoying the genre in the first place, it grips like Magician by Raymond E. Feist from the very get-go and holds your attention thereafter all the way through to the denouement. Yes, it is a weighty tome, coming in at over 800 pages, but this re-imagining of the fall of the Roman Empire with its pervasive, destructive religion, decadence and decay at the heart of society is a fantastic effort by a writer who deserves to become well-known.
There's a little magic, a hint of dragons, intellects at play and the stubbornness of all great fantasy characters, here embodied by Grigor to a large extent. I know this is officially book 3 of a series, but these are stand-alone stories (though this one is shortly to have a part 2!) and Aderyn Wood needs to be on your TBR list if you love fantasy.
Stunning, epic fantasy. The complexity of the world and characters was incredible. Grigor was easily my favourite character and I looked forward to all his chapters, but there was so much going on with all the various POVs that kept the pages turning quickly. The author's world building, drawing inspiration from ancient Rome, was just mind boggling, and so tangible on the page. Definitely one for epic fantasy lovers.
Great book. Follow the adventures of the various characters with twist and suspense. The book has magic, intrigue, and dragons. Love the method used by the author in which each chapter follows the story line of a specific character. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.
