Quinn Alexander has committed an unthinkable crime.

But when an unexpected snowstorm forces her off the road, Quinn must take refuge at the broken-down, isolated Baxter Motel. The handsome and kindly owner, Nick Baxter, is only too happy to offer her a cheap room for the night.

Unfortunately, the Baxter Motel isn’t the quiet, safe haven it seemed to be. The motel has a dark and disturbing past. And in the dilapidated house across the way, the silhouette of Nick's ailing wife is always at the window. Always watching.

The twists in the book were good, the only problem was that if you returned to previous chapters, they didn’t follow from what was presented. The sister seemed so empathic and concerned, there was a lot of shivering and worrying about being harmed, but then she was suddenly cold-hearted and full of revenge.

The Woman in the Window meets The Bates motel!

Quinn Alexander has killed her abusive husband-but knowing that nobody would believe her because he is so well regarded and well connected-she makes a run for it..

A snowstorm slows down her escape and forces her off the road, and into “The Baxter Motel” for the night-a place with a dark, disturbing past, and a room-#201 which is never rented out, anymore.

What happened in that room?

In a dilapidated house, across the way, the motel owner’s wife, is always sitting in the window-watching…

And, in the room next door to Quinn’s, an elderly fortune teller, who resides at the hotel full time, warns Quinn to leave while she can.

Did Quinn stumble upon a safe place to hide?
Or a place more dangerous than the one she left behind?

I have been wanting to read something by Freida McFadden for sometime now-and since I have traveled for work, and stayed in hotels every week for many years-I love reading creepy stories which take place in hotels and motels, so this was the perfect book to start with!

Some of the reveals worked for me, and some didn’t but when all was said and done, it was a fun Audible listen!

Pop the popcorn 🍿 and indulge!

3.5 Popcorn Stars

Pop, Pop, Fizzle.....

Pop - A beginning that takes off fast! Quinn is trying to wash off her bloody hands in the sink when the doorbell rings. "Oh No. There's a cop at my door". She has to deal with him and then she is on the run.....

Pop - There is a raging snowstorm and she needs to get off the road and out of sight quick. She finds a seedy, rundown motel, The Baxter Motel. The sign is falling apart and its decrepit, with a wreck of a house behind it - reminisent of the creepy motel from Psycho. Also known locally as "The Murder Motel". Don't take any showers here!

Fizzle - Sigh.... the ending fizzled for me. The plot twist used a recycled tactic that I dislike. Oh, the let down.

I can't spell out the twist without a spoiler, but its one of my pet peeves. Her style reminded me a little of Shari Lapena. You get a fast, entertaining read. So.... if you're looking for something with some creepy characters and setting, this would work, doesn't involve too much brain power.

Although the ending fizzled for me, others have been very pleased. I may give this author another try (maybe).

┆ ⤿ 🗝️ ⌗ thoughts
⟡ i am pleasantly surprised to say that i actually liked this one a lot! i took a break from freida mcfadden books for a bit because i feel like they've recently just been the same carbon copies of each other with the same plot progression, same twists, etc. and while this did have a lot of "classic freida" things about it, the story was so interesting that i didn't even care. thanks to this book i can happily say that i am FREEEE from the shackles of my reading slump, and that honestly made the reading experience even better for me!

do not disturb follows quinn, who we meet in the first chapter as she's standing over her husbands lifeless body. she murdered him, and quickly flees from her town to escape from the cops. when a bad storm causes her to pull over (and unfortunately become stuck) at a motel, her week goes from bad to even worse. the motel has a dark past, and quinn is sure it has something to do with the owner's wheelchair ridden wife who constantly watches her through the window.

⟡ the first thing i really enjoyed about this book (like freida's other thrillers) was how entertaining and fast paced it was. the story immediately started with something shocking happening, and i was hooked from the first page wondering what was going to happen. there weren't any annoying, unnecessary scenes that made me bored, and the suspenseful plot twists at the end of every chapter made me want to never put it down.

⟡ the way it was written was interesting to me as well. we got four povs, and it helped the story make more sense. the story flowed more easily that way, and it kept me from getting bored with the main character towards the middle.

⟡ also, the plot twists at the end had my jaw on the floor. i've read so many thrillers that usually i can guess what the twist would be, but this one actually got me pretty good. and in my opinion, it didn't suck! everything was tied together perfectly, and i felt satisfied (but also a little annoyed at a certain character) at the end.

┆ ⤿ 🏚️ ⌗ characters - spoilers onwards!

quinn ꒱ actually was a decent main character, besides the fact that she literally murdered her husband amongst other things.. but in terms of thriller mc, she didn't piss me off as much as other ones have in the past. i feel like she made a lot of rational decisions for the most part, and once we got her full backstory i was really rooting for her. i also felt bad for how her husband treated her, and while i know murder isn't justifiable.... #isupportwomenswrongs 💋

rosalie ꒱ was such a doll, i felt so bad for her. she's literally nina from the housemaid reincarnated. not only is she stuck in a wheelchair with no motivation to live, but she also had to be married to a cheating idiot like nick! i know they made up in the end and actually were really cute, but i still can't help thinking she deserves someone better. anyway, i'm glad she had a happy ending.

greta ꒱ was hilarious omg, i didn't expect to laugh as much as i did. she carried some parts of this book heavily, and my jaw was on the floor. does this make her a girls girl??

claudia ꒱ actually had me gagged at the end, cause why was i thinking some happy little women shit was going on LOL. but in all seriousness, i loved this plot twist so much and i feel like it really completed the story.

┆ ⤿ 📺 ⌗ final thoughts
⟡ all in all, this was such an entertaining read and i can't wait to find another older freida mcfadden book to read. in the meantime i reccomend this to anyone wanting a quick & easy book to read, especially if you're in a reading slump like i was.

Well, I recently rewatched Hitchcock’s Psycho before it leaves Netflix—and wow, it still holds its place as one of my top three Hitchcock masterpieces! That slow-burn, eerie, creeping psychological tension never fails to hook me. So imagine my delight when I discovered this book—a sharp, smart, and wildly entertaining modern tribute to Psycho that blends its suspenseful DNA with a splash of The Woman in the Window vibes. And let me tell you: the WTH twists in this book? Absolutely phenomenal. You won’t see them coming!

The parallels to Psycho are undeniable—from the structure to the sequence of events—but with clever reinventions. Our heroine, Quinn Alexander, is no con artist like Marion Crane. She’s a sweet, sensible banker trapped in a toxic marriage with a dangerously powerful man who hides his abuse behind a charming facade. After killing him in self-defense and panicking when her high school sweetheart, Officer Dwyer, stops by due to noise complaints, Quinn flees in her trusty Toyota Corolla (McFadden sure loves her Toyotas!).

Like in Psycho, she’s stopped by a cop due to a broken taillight and soon finds herself seeking refuge for the night. But instead of a roadside motel, she stumbles into the notoriously sketchy Baxter Hotel—aka “The Murder House,” according to the internet (not that she could check Yelp, since she ditched her phone).

Nick—the soft-spoken, too-nice-to-be-true hotel clerk—offers her a room, barely blinking at her half-baked story and letting her pay in cash. Cue the unsettling cast of guests: Room 201 houses a mysterious, reclusive guest; Room 202 belongs to Greta, a white-haired, blue-eyed, eccentric Hungarian former carnival oracle; and Quinn lands in Room 203.

Things spiral quickly. There’s a house across from the hotel where Nick’s wife, Rosalie, silently watches Quinn’s every move from the window. She's not dead like Norman’s mother—just living with advanced multiple sclerosis and radiating eerie vibes. Add Greta's ominous warning about a murder in Room 202 and red water leaking from the ceiling, and suddenly one night in the Baxter Hotel feels like a lifetime of bad choices.

Quinn only plans to stay until the snowstorm clears, but with the police possibly on her trail and her worried sister Claudia left behind, the question isn’t whether she wants to leave... it’s whether she can.

Overall: This was one of my fastest, most exhilarating Freida McFadden reads to date! Deliciously suspenseful, irresistibly twisty, and full of clever nods to one of cinema’s greats. I’m gleefully giving this one 5 psychotic stars. So much fun—I couldn’t put it down!

This was trash, and not even in the fun way.

The writing is atrocious and repetitive. Every character has the same voice. Every character is incredibly dumb and does things that completely do not make sense. And then the “twists” that are just frustrating.

I cannot fathom how this has over a 4-star rating. You all need to start reading some better books.

This is my review of No Not Disturb.

Quinn Alexander has committed an unthinkable crime. She killed her husband, Derek in self-defense. Her husband is lying dead on the kitchen floor in a pool of blood.

At the same time as she was washing the blood off her hands, the doorbell rang and it was Deputy Scott Dwyer, her boyfriend when they were in high school. He had paid a visit to the house regarding a noise disturbance, coming from their home, but Quinn reassures him that she had been watching a horror movie with the sound turned up while her husband was working.

But after getting rid of Deputy Dwyer, she had two options: confess or run. She decided to run, but got derailed by a New Hampshire blizzard; forcing her to take shelter at the run-down, isolated highway Baxter Hotel. The handsome owner, Nick Baxter, is only too happy to offer her a cheap room for the night.

But the Baxter Motel has a dark and disturbing past. And in the run-down house across the way, the Nick's ailing wife, Rosalie is always at the window…watching every move.

In the morning when the plows have been out to clear the parking lot, Quinn must leave the motel. But first, she must survive the night.

Do Not Disturb is a Hitchcock-style psychological very creepy thriller that will keep you glued to the pages until you reach the shocking conclusion.

Quinn's story starts with her murdering her husband. This story just takes off and doesn't slow down until the end.

Quinn finds herself running from the law and hides out at the Baxter Motel, were she briefly befriends the old lady, Greta, staying in one of the other rooms and the owner Nick and his disabled wife. With Quinn's sister, is looking for her and a whole bunch of twists makes its way in.

Another Freida specialty, so twisty, suspenseful and fast paced. Loved it!

This book pays it's own tribute to Alfred Hitchcock and his "Psycho" . I had Norman Bates vibes all over, reading this book. It's not a retelling, not at all, but there were parts that reminded me of the classical movie starring Anthony Perkins. "Do not disturb" was a good mystery, unputdownable, suspenseful and intriguing ! I admit i liked it more than her "Housemaid". This book kept me at the edge of my seat till the very end. Finally, my first 4 star rating for 2023!

Poorly written thriller in the „The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window“ subgenre, about a woman on the run after she kills her husband.

It’s full of clichés, boring characters and uninteresting twists. It’s a quick read, but I still forced myself to finish the last 40%. But not without a lot of eye rolling.

This book is written by a really good author, Freida McFadden, and I would not hesitate to read anything she writes. Unfortunately, this book just was not for me. It seems very similar to other plots and the changes come so quickly that it's hard to develop a relationship with the characters. Even so, I will continue to read the author's work because I know there's better coming.

At this point, I'll even read Freida's grocery list. She has become my favourite author for mystery thriller genre and the more I read her books the more I love her storytelling, the way she writes her characters, the scheming and plotting and twists and turns in her stories.

The starting of this book was amazing and the ending was mind-blowing. Somehow I always know what's gonna happen in the ending but Freida never fails to surprise me because she always have atleast 5 or 6 plot twists coming up one after the other.

I also love that Freida always gives us a small romantic story in her thriller books to keep us more captivated in the story. Though you can never believe any of her characters but still it's fun to read that part of the story. And I liked Rosie and Nick's story as well.

This was a multi-narrative story and it was a bit hard for me to keep up with the plot. It was exciting and exhilarating to see the way story unfolded and the truths started to unravel. That old lady still creeps me out **shudders**

Overall this was an entertaining and an enjoyable book and if you are looking for something like this you should definitely give this book a try. It's Freida McFadden guys! Do you really need any other reason than that?

I cannot comprehend the high ratings of this book. If I had to sum up my review of this story in one word, it would be STUPID. There was no character development at all. The tired jealous sister trope was as ridiculous as it was predictable. I knew as soon as she got real about her feelings about her sister what was going to happen. And what a waste of characters in Rosalie and Greta. Like wtf was the point in all that. How were Naomi and Greta not the same person??? Totally missed opportunity. It was as if this writer had a deadline and bills to pay, but didn’t have any time to actually write, so she slapped it together using some shitty App. Worst book ever. Don’t waste your time.

“Maybe we used up all our happiness. Maybe everybody only gets so much.”

Do Not Disturb, starts with a literal bang. I love me some mystery psychological thriller goodness, especially when they keep me guessing until the end and boy was i entertained. 𝐀 𝐦𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫, 𝐚 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐮𝐧, 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐦, 𝐚 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐲 𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧'𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐰. What's not to love. Someone described this as “An homage to suspense master Alfred Hitchcock” and they were absolutely correct, it reminded me a lot of his movies while still possessing an extra layer of originality.
𝐈 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐲𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫’𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲 𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐮𝐧-𝐩𝐮𝐭-𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧-𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐩𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫. She balanced the story incredibly well with her intricate premise, fast paced storytelling skills, compelling suspense and surprising twists with cleverly POV switches between the 3 characters.

Her style is the ideal binge-worthy Autumn read. 325 glorious pages of fun, creepiness, thrill, edge of your seat suspense combined with knock you out of your seat twists and turns. This was a solid 4.5 stars read.

i was not disturbed. i was bAmbOozLed. this one was entirely too predictable and not in a fun way. Quinn was the worst fugitive ever. i know Freida McFaddens female narrators tend to have an air of stupidity in them, but the dumb-ness in Quinn was inescapable to ignore. she was too skittish & emotional. on another note, i didnt like the “woman in the window” subplot either. Rosalia was so awful 😭 (not in an evil type of way, but just impossible to be around). i wish Nick had left her to die & rot.

(SPOILER par.) i had caught on that the sister was the one having an affair with Quinns husband, but i didnt think that she was the one taking revenge on Quinn. she seemed so worried about Quinn. i thought that she arrived at the motel AFTER Quinn was attacked and to look for her. so, i was confused when i got to the chapter explaining her stabbing Quinn and trying to off Rosalia. idk how i missed the signs. someone help me make sense the chronological order of these events. 😕

There will be spoilers. Continue at your own risk. You have been warned.

It’s Friday night and Quinn has just murdered her abusive husband. She doesn’t want to go to jail so she makes a run for it, hoping to cross the border into Canada before anyone discovers his body. But she has picked the worst possible night to make her getaway because a blizzard is wreaking havoc on her town. Her little Corolla can’t make it through the storm and she’s already been spotted by two people who can tell the police her whereabouts, so she’s forced to take refuge at an isolated motel. There Quinn meets the friendly and good-looking owner, Nick, who puts her in a room next to an older woman named Greta (a longtime guest). And across from the motel, is Nick’s house where his wheelchair bound wife, Rosalie, sits at the window all day watching her.

The story is told from multiple POVs: Quinn, Quinn’s sister Claudia, Claudia’s husband Rob, and Rosalie. Quinn, Claudia, and Rosalie all sounded the same. And I have no idea why we needed to know Rob’s perspective for his brief appearance. To me, I felt like the author didn’t have enough story and tried to stretch it out. She also mixed different movies, thinking she was being clever but did not execute her idea well.

Things that I thought didn’t add up:

Claudia was absolutely worried about her sister and wanted to find her, so she could help her. Yet after listening to Rob’s POV and we learned that Claudia was having an affair with Quinn’s abusive husband, Claudia’s whole tone just shifted to: Yep, that’s right. I hate my f@*king sister. She’s a spoiled, unappreciative b!tch. Of course I was sleeping with her man. And my plan all along was to track her down and kill her because she killed the love of my life. That just came out of left field. I could understand if this was written from a third person POV and we didn’t know what exactly was going on in the characters head but it was written in first person so there’s no way the character should have switched personalities like that. The author tried to throw in at the end that she suffered from bipolar disorder and had stop taking her medication, but that doesn’t justify the personality switch.

From Claudia’s original POV, she said she passed police while heading to the motel, talked to Nick and was shown to her room, then met with Greta. Now after the big twist, she said as soon as she pulled up to the motel, she saw Quinn leaving, had a whole convo with her, stabbed her and then placed her in the trunk. After that she spoke to Nick, got shown to her room, met & stabbed Greta, noticed Rosalie in the window and went to try to kill her too because she figured Rosalie saw everything. Like what??? If we’re in Claudia’s POV how was none of that mentioned the first time?

When Quinn decided to leave the motel, she was attacked and stabbed immediately from her perspective. So why didn’t she mention seeing her sister and having a conversation with her before being stabbed? Oh, I know why. Because the author wanted it to be revealed in her big stupid twist.

And throughout the entire story, Rosalie sat at the window watching everything that was going on in the motel with her binoculars. She had full view of every motel room because not one person closed their blinds. (Insert: a hard eye roll) But Rosalie never saw Claudia confront Quinn, stab her, or stuff her in the trunk. Yet she saw Claudia sneaking around Quinn’s car then pulling out a knife after Claudia spotted her. Like give me a break.

Then the author tried to throw in a previous murder that happened at the hotel to make it look like Nick was the killer. I knew from jump it was Greta. Like why else was she even in the story?

After everything is revealed, the author tried to tidy everything up. And she gave everyone nice sweet endings except Claudia who remained a b!tch in jail and didn’t get a POV.

I don’t know how this got so many positive reviews but I guess some people like these make no sense plot twists.

Very entertaining read, i ate this up in one day—Frieda Mcfadden just knows, how to do it. Engaging, fastpaced, twisty… that’s her work. Even though i’ve read bad and good thriller books from her, bad were… bad but the good ones?? I’m still thinking about them till this day. We’ve got four povs and every one of them gets a part in the story—characters were kinda bland, but that’s thrillers after all.

I mean, it was fine. But wouldn’t recommend.

Freida has quite a distinct writing style, one that at times can be annoying. Most of her main characters are insufferable, but the plot twist can be so good that it makes up for it in the end. Unfortunately, the opposite is the case for this one.

The story was interesting enough, not overly engaging, but I didn’t mind the main character, I also felt like Freida’s regular writing style wasn’t as evident in this book, so it was an easy read with not much frustration. But the plot twists were lacklustre at best and although totally different to where I thought the story was going, just not gaggy enough to excite me.

"Do Not Disturb" had no shortage of disturbing characters and plot twists.

When a woman kills her husband in self-defense, her quick crime scene exit gets derailed by a New Hampshire blizzard; forcing her to take shelter at the run-down, inconspicuous highway Baxter Hotel.

Is the Baxter Hotel similar to the Bates Hotel?

Throughout the book's entirety, the author teases readers with Bates Hotel comparisons; keeping readers in wait for that famously gruesome shower scene.

Freida McFadden's books are fast-paced, fun, and keep you guessing.  Although this book's ending was contrived and implausible, this book was still a 4-star read for me.

I listened to the audiobook and the two narrators did a superb job.

I always enjoy Freida McFadden's books and look forward to listening to her future titles.

2.5 Quinn killed her husband, Derek, and is on the run. One thing bugged me throughout the book. Not only is Derek devastatingly handsome but he is super rich too, of course. They live in a mansion, he has a fancy car, they mulled over plush carpet samples, to choose the perfect one YET…when Quinn was making a mad dash away from her house, her heels clacked against the LINOLEUM floor in the kitchen. Really? Uber rich. Best of everything and linoleum floors? Most of the writing seemed juvenile to me. A couple of twists were interesting enough I bumped rating from 2 to 2.5
