I read this along with Alaska Behind Blue Eyes while sitting on the beach enjoying the sound of the waves on Lake Michigan. If I had to describe Alaska Behind Blue Eyes, the overall feeling I get while reading was a sense of longing and loneliness followed by a deep wonder at the environment and people Alan describes. This book, Standing Ground discusses more of his experiences in Clare Michigan ( a town I am familiar with) and is more of a mix of very light absolutely hilarious stories as well as some of the deeper trials and mysteries in life. I love that he writes about the very real people he has met and the impact they have left on him. He also describes lessons he has learned from some of these people that has helped him to be a more thoughtful considerate person over the years. Very engaging, I am glad to have picked these up on my visit through Clare.

Wonderful read. Really. I laughed OUT LOUD at many points. I read it in one fell swoop while traveling. Literally in one day.

Alan is my cousin. I can hear his booming laugh as I read the words he's put to paper. I highly recommend reading this and don't skip the Introduction like you normally may. It gives you an insight into Alan's personality.

Two thumbs up!
