This is The Fire King
I RECEIVED A DRC FROM THE PUBLISHER VIA NETGALLEY. THANK YOU.
My Review: Literally picks up where the previous book leaves off. Feels more like one long book simply cut in half, in which case I say good decision! This afforded me the chance to rest between battles. This is a thing that the characters get little chance to do.
We are still within the male-dominated narrative of Western European high fantasys Chosen One plot. Betrayal, sadness, and loss are the dominant modes for most of the book. I think it bears repeating that Author Stitle is a seventeen-year-old writing sensitively and well about heavy, hard topics that many much older can do less with than he does. This is very impressive inner-directed writing, given the general trope of fantasy for tormented heroes. These men grieve realistically.
Still fully within genre conventions, though. Nothing breaks the mold...but it does not need to when it is molded so well.
Favorite Quotes: “‘For my mother…’ Castien hesitated. ‘For Elric’… ‘No… For ME!’ Castien pulled the trigger.”
“The smoke cleared, revealing the glowing figure of Faelyn Titansworn-flaming crown atop his head-standing in a crater of his own making.”
Likes: • love faelyn and castien’s characters • the concept behind the characters powers was super well developed • some very good plot twists
Dislikes: • very rushed • Castien didn’t develop his powers at all • the deaths felt rushed through so I didn’t have time to mourn the characters
Thoughts: Overall I liked book 2 and bit more than book 1 because I felt that more of my questions were answered and I had a better understanding of what was going on. The story still felt incredibly rushed and could have been more deeply developed to give the reader a better sense of the world they were immersing themselves. I did like at the end of the book when everything began to come together and connect a couple of plot points that had been left open. I hope a third book is released in order to answer the rest of the questions I have for these characters.

A fantastic continuation. The Fire King picks up where Stormless left off. We find Castien fleeing his home, searching for the truth while battling his own anxiety. Meanwhile, Faelyn sets off on his own journey to avenge his father's death, no matter the consequences. No one knows who to trust as it becomes clear that their understanding of their own country's history is missing quite a few pieces. Who is pulling the strings, and who will be left standing when the dust clears?
I read half of this novel nearly a year ago, and just finally got back to it (due to personal life events). I was so glad to get back into this world. Yet again, I am blown away by how well fleshed out the setting is. These characters have real emotions, and it's refreshing to see it. I loved getting the answers to many of the questions I was left with after Stormless, though there's still much to be revealed in future installments, I'm sure. I look forward to picking those up as well when they are released.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
4.5 stars rounded up to 5 because authors are cool
Big level up from book 1,which I really needed to keep any interest in this series.
I found the character work to be a weak point of book 1, and that was not an issue here at all. Our two main POVs grew so much in this; and one of them especially...holy heck, this person could be an all-timer for me by series end.
The history, lore, geography, and magic of the series are so unique. While I don't always find it to be as captivating as intended, still have so much respect for the creativity behind it.
Received as an ARC, I am leaving my honest review. An epic journey of power, deceit, betrayals and forces that are guiding everything from the first battle to the brilliantly created ending. The ending creates more questions and sets forth a quest that will leave you yearning for the next book. Prepare for battle as kings are assasinated, kingdoms desperately trying not to be overthrown and magic whirling through the paragraphs keeping you gripped to the pages. Fast paced with a storyline and plot that make it hard to put down!
I enjoyed the second book in this series even more than I did the first one! I continue to be amazed at the complexity (but not overwhelmingly so) of the world that the author has created. The characters and story are rich and engaging as well. I will be looking forward to the final book of the trilogy to see where the story goes from here!
Full of twists and action. Book left me wanting more. Great complex characters. Fast paced. My favourite character is faelyn titansworn. He is a flawed complex character
Fantastic!!! An incredible weaving of storytelling that will leave you yearning for more. I wasn't able to put this book down(finished it in only 2 sittings!), and can't wait to read the next one!
I’d like to start that all of the timelines and events in Stormless came together perfectly in The Fire King. Questions were answered in better ways than I could have imagined and more were left for the following books. One thing that was elevated in this sequel was the use of dramatic irony. What was revealed to us kept suspense waiting for when it would happen to the characters.
This book made me feel all the emotions.
In my review of Stormless I made a comment on the writing style, and I’d say it definitely improved in this book. I adored the writing style, the sentence structure fit every scene and the writing flowed. The writing showed how character’s felt or believed rather than telling. Information differed between povs because one character knew less than another and it made it even more fun to read.
The Fire King dived into even more character’s povs and I loved it. My favorite to see was Luka’s. All the characters were fleshed out.
The world came even more into life this story. More settings were introduced and the relationships between people made it all feel that much more real. Every place the characters traveled to was vibrant and interesting in their own senses.
This is a promising fantasy series and I can only imagine it getting better :)
“The jagged peaks of the Highlands stretched endlessly around him. Lone trees swayed in the distance below, painting their eerie shadows on the land beneath them. Stars shined overhead, lighting the way for travelers far below. Folds of the enigmatic, blue-green waves of light floated in the sky above, weaving between the stars.”
