Koraly is back with her fierce anti-establishment poems, and man does she tear the status-quo in shreds! She speaks her mind, says the thing you’re told not to say, and cuts right through to oppressive truths about Australia, men, and the migrant experience. This is the third poetry collection of hers I have read, and it does not disappoint!
she’s not normal by Koraly Dimitriadis was an impactful collection of feminist poetry about anger and sadness following different interactions with men and the Australian government. There were many poems that I found pretty inspirational and that made me feel indignant and angry.
Poetry is not my normal genre, but I have been really into feminist literature recently and wanted to check this collection out. Almost all of the poems were meaningful and made really good points into flaws in our world and communities. I live in the United States, and so Australian politics is not something I know much about, but I found many of the references and stories still relevant. Any poems referencing specific events that occurred were explained at the end of the poem, which was nice.
I would recommend she’s not normal to women who are looking to be empowered in a world that sometimes tries to tear us down. I really found it quite impactful and it was a quick read that inspired me.

I like an angry woman who is unapologetic about the crud of expectations piled on her. I'm grateful that her words helped others too. She's right. Her poetry isn't going to win her roses with academic professors or purple prose enthusiasts. Probably not going to end wars.
That's fine. Her poetry is slam: direct, raw, and from the heart. They're often dedicated to the soul of another. I can dig that. Would like to hear her perform these someday.

I love this book. I was lucky to see Koraly perform a few of her poems recently, when she passed through Canberra on her national tour. What a force to be reckoned with. Her poetry is powerful and authentic. Her stories are intensely personal but shine light on much bigger issues in our society. It’s funny, troubling, challenging and thought provoking, sometimes all at the same time. I’m so glad I’ve discovered her and will definitely be looking for more.
