A beautifully illustrated devotional edition of the most popular summary of the Christian faith ever Martin Luther's Small Catechism.
To All The Essential Teachings of Christianity helps believers--both new and seasoned--connect the most foundational beliefs of Christianity to everyday life.
Stirring meditations help Christians embrace and understand truths such as the Ten Commandments, the Apostles' Creed, and The Lord's Prayer. And fine works of art, ranging from medieval to modern, illustrate each Christian living concept. Works by artists such as Michelangelo, Hans Holbein, Paul Gauguin, Henry Tanner, and Salvador Dali are included, along with art appreciation notes.
Based upon Luther's Small Catechism with Explanation, To All Eternity provides a strong review of Christian doctrine. Instructions for use as a Lenten devotional or as a 1-year devotional are included in the front of the book.
Ideal as a gift for newly confirmed youth or adults new to the church.
Also appropriate for confirmation instructors, homeschoolers, and classical educators.
I love the premise of this book: To pair the words of Luther's Small Catechism with fine artwork for the sake of devotional reflection.
Perhaps it is inevitable that such an ambitious project will not satisfy everyone's tastes completely, so I do not fault the authors, but I will say that some of the artworks and some of the devotional reflections were much more compelling than others. I am not sure it was necessarily useful to make sure that all periods or styles of art were covered in such a book, and it might have been more fruitful in some instances to select truly fitting works, even if this meant letting some artistic periods go uncovered.
Also, I become weary of devotional books that feel the compelling need to include questions or applications for the reader. In my experience, the best devotional reading is by theologians who simply teach and let such writing have what effect it will on the reader.
Nevertheless, I have no theological qualms about the book, and it has been a delight to have my young son ask to look at a picture from it each night before bed. That sort of interest is exactly what I would hope for such a book to engender.
