A fabulous read. I don't normally read this genre but I am so glad I did. Sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone is worth it. The author created great characters and I can't wait to keep following this story in the next part. Definitely recommend.

Wow what a good intro to this author. The characters were chefs kiss, I really enjoyed the writing style. All around, great book. Would recommend.

What an amazing introduction to Harper’s writing. I couldn’t put this book down! Such diverse and well developed characters and a unique storyline that pulls you into a magical world. Loved this book!

April 24, 2024Of Light and Nightmares is an entertaining book that I finished in a day. To read almost 500 pages says a lot about the immersion of this book. It just took me away on a journey. I had a bumpy ride but I was hooked and could not stop reading.
Of Light and Nightmares is the story of Emmeline. She has been prone to seizures since her late teens and lives a reclusive life in a mansion in Toronto, managing her family’s philanthropic work. Her brother, Matthew, is a doctor who accompanies her to many of the events. On one such event, she has what feels like a seizure but doesn’t manifest as one. The two women who trigger this in her are intrigued by her. Emmeline and Matthew find themselves plunged into the world of these fantastic creatures that look like humans sometimes.
They call themselves the nainthe. Their job is to protect the world from the raizour, creatures who enter the world through a gateway and cause violence. Historically, they have worked closely with humans who have the unique ability to find other humans who have the potential to become nainthe. They call such humans ‘elystier’. No elystier has existed in the last two decades and the discovery of Emmeline is a saving grace to the nainthe as without her, they cannot continue to exist. I enjoyed this unique set of creatures and mythology.
The story features a diverse cast of characters. Everyone has their own distinct personalities and motivations. I loved the cultural references in Emmeline and Matthew's education, how they refer to elders, the fear of the aunties who are always playing matchmaker and are big gossips. Since Emmeline and Matthew are rich, there is a person for everything and new phones, cars, lawyers and private investigators appear with the zap of fingers. This helped the pace of the plot as things would get taken care of without any issues and also added a lightness to the whole story because the stress was taken away from having to deal with these things personally. Though Emmeline is in her thirties, with her living at home, telling white lies to her caretakers and someone else cleaning her messes makes this story of the coming-of-age trope.
Of Light and Nightmares is a page-turner with a fast-paced plot that kept me hooked from start to finish. It is told in third person from Emmeline’s point of view with sporadic insight into her thoughts. A lot of the book is dialogue which is what helped me fly through it though it also felt like things were being explained to me through conversations rather than described. The dialogue changes into humorous banter as the story progresses and the various characters get to know each other.
While the book has its strengths, there is also room for growth and development in future installments. I found it difficult to build an emotional connection with any of the characters. This may be because of the abundance of dialogue or the third person narrative style. Occasionally I had access to Emmeline’s private thoughts. In the later half of the book, the thoughts increased and there seemed to be a unique telepathic connection between Emmeline and Matthew.
Though there were fights between the nainthe and raizour and people got hurt, the tone of the book felt light to me. Actions didn’t have consequences rooted in reality, particularly because Emmeline and Matthew’s rich status afforded them the luxury to not deal with the messes personally.
I am glad I stuck to the end of the book because the last 100 pages were stellar. I was shocked by the increase in violence. The last couple chapters gave a proper glimpse of the dark fantasy that this story truly is.
I hadn’t expected Of Light and Nightmares to be such a quick read for me! I flew through it in a day and I liked the story. I am interested to see how the follow up volume fleshes out the world and hope that I start connecting with individual characters, not just the relationships and the non-stop plot.

Emmeline spends the majority of her time maintaining her family’s foundation and supporting multiple non-profits. At a fundraising gala she runs into two mysterious women who agitate her seizure condition. After the gala the women approach Emmeline, claiming she’s the person they have been searching for over decades. They claim they are nainthe, supernatural defenders of the world from demon-like creatures called raizours, and Emmeline is a seeker, someone who is able to sense people who will turn into nainthe. Despite her skepticism, Emmeline attempts to help the nainthe while still maintaining her independence.
Of Light and Nightmares is a difficult book to get into, and I suspect it is due to the lack of goals for the main character. Emmeline is a fairly passive character. She claims to not be a doormat, but she often goes along with whatever is asked of her, only standing up to herself in certain situations. For example, the nainthe are extremely aggressive, condescending, and rude to Emmeline throughout their interactions. Despite not getting a clear explanation why a seeker is so important to them or why she should care about anything the nainthe are doing, Emmeline continues to spend time with them and attempt to help them. She spends time at galas and running her family’s foundation, but she doesn’t appear to enjoy it or even like doing it. She dates the mayor even though she clearly doesn’t like him or enjoy his company. What exactly does Emmeline want out of life?
Even the nainthe seem to hate life. They all complain about their sacrifices and how no one would choose to be a nainthe. If that’s the case, shouldn’t they be happy to not have a seeker to make more nainthe? Yes, the raizours evidently are murderous, but it’s also clear that the nainthe have never attempted to make peace with the raizours or find out what they want. It’s hard to enjoy a book where all the “good guys” clearly are miserable. Overall a disappointing read.

This book was fairly slow paced for most of it but HOLY MOLY did it just ramp up in the last 70 pages! Also maybe the first time I have ever been jump-scared by a non-horror book. Things I loved about this book: minority representation done well (racial minorities, accessibility in fantasy races rep, bisexual rep, neurodivergence), the slow-burn (mostly) romance that I was immediately invested in, and seeing how a grown-ass woman with a life and responsibilities has to adapt to many of the common 'chosen one/fantasy destiny' shenanigans that we usually see being dealt with by teens or 20 somethings. Where I think this book could improve is some of the conversation/banter between characters. There wasn't a lot of flow and it sometimes felt very forced and unnatural. Not to mention I have many annotations where I think some of the dialogue choices are just so unrealistic for what most of the time is a very rational and grounded FMC. In the front half of this book I was lukewarm but in the back half this book really grabbed me and now I am delaying the book I was going to read next to IMMEDIATELY start the next book in this trilogy. Do I need answers to the main fantasy plot and to see where this goes? Yes. But am I REALLY just waiting for the climax (pun intended) of our romance sublot because the author is making me work for it WHICH I LOVE? Also yes. It's very refreshing for a romance subplot in an adult fantasy novel to not feel like insta-love. You can do the obvious almost fated mate style immediate attraction and pointing out to your readers who the end-game couple is while also giving us a slow build and yearning and Alex B. Harper has that down.

Emmeline took over her family’s charity foundation at a relatively young age. Her brother, Mattie, is a doctor on the autism spectrum. Despite the wealth and privilege, they have lived fairly normal lives until Emmeline starts dating the city mayor and discovers that she is meant to help the nainthe guard against the demon-like monsters called the raizour.
The premise of a group of guardians protecting the world from evil is not a particularly unique one, but there was some interesting world building, and plenty of action. The characters got me, though. I became more attached than I expected to the core group and enjoyed the care that they displayed for each other. The fallout from the climactic scene had me tearing up.
My only real issue is that there were a couple of very serious plot holes at the cliffhanger ending. I’ll have to read the next to see if that is resolved but I am really looking forward to it!

The premise of this story was pretty cool. I don’t know if it’s original, but I don’t think I’ve read anything like it. As the first book in the series, this is off to an exciting start.
Harper does a fantastic job of the world-building with striking imagery. Some parts of the story felt like the pacing was too slow for me, and parts felt rushed. I get attached to characters quite quickly, and Emmeline was a character that was easy to get connected to.
In this story, Harper covers several sensitive issues and does it well. The book comes with trigger and content warnings, so please read those to decide if this book is for you. I don’t typically read dark fantasy, but this was enjoyable. This does end in a cliffhanger, so be warned. This thrilling story follows a reclusive heiress, Emmeline, who would become the most unlikely yet sympathetic heroine. Her wealthy parents passed away almost a decade ago, and from a young age, she learned that when power and wealth were involved, the monsters came out in droves. Now an adult, she’s discovered that not only are there monsters, but they’re also from another world, and they’re on her doorstep looking for her. Emmeline realizes that she might be the salvation the monsters have been searching for, but she needs to decide if she’s willing to risk her life when she doesn’t know who, or what, she can trust.
I finished this book in under THREE DAYS. It was the absolute favourite part of my day to get lost in the story with my coffee after a long work day. Now I cannot wait for book 2 to be published fast enough!!

I absolutely loved this book and need the next two books now!! I was nervous to read it because lately I’ve felt burnt out from fantasies because of all the info dumps and intricate world building. But this book was so well written. The information was presented so well that it didn’t feel overwhelming or forced. I loved the world created here and want to know more about the Nianthe and the Raizour. The pacing was perfect and everything included in the story felt intentional. There wasn’t a lot of added fluff, instead everything felt like there’s was a reason and context to it, even if we won’t know it until later.
I loved every single character. Emia is one of my new favorite female main characters. I loved how strong she was and how she always fought for herself and the people she loved. She made sure she was taken seriously and not walked all over. She didn’t need someone else to come in and speak for her, she did it herself even when she was scared. She’s also full of empathy and cares for so many people. She is one of the best written FMC’s I’ve read in a while.
The only thing negative thing is I’m not a big fan of the cover. But that’s just my personal opinion about not liking real people on covers.

The premise of this book was so interesting—I don’t think I’ve ever read anything quite like it, which is awesome! The author did an amazing job with the world-building and foreshadowing. I really appreciated how much the characters grew throughout the story—finding their sense of identity and making real sacrifices.
The characters were strong and had such distinct personalities that I honestly felt like I could be friends with them. As a dark fantasy lover, I was totally sucked into the world. The author really nailed the atmosphere and tone of the genre.
I’ll admit, I struggled a bit with the beginning—the world-building was dense enough that my eyes glazed over at times (though that’s probably a me problem, since I have the attention span of a gnat). But once the story picked up, it really picked up.
It ends on a cliffhanger, and now I’m counting down the days until the next book comes out!

I could not put this book down and absolutely adored the storyline and the characters! It’s an adult fantasy (not YA, so the characters are a little older), and I almost want to call it a “post-coming-of-age” story. So addictive and that slow-burn romance had me hooked. Love, love, love!!!
