Geneva Ashcroft Hayes's marriage to a newspaper mogul might have been arranged, but the New York socialite is devastated when her husband's plane crashes a few short months after their nuptials. When her friend also disappears, she trades her sparkling gowns for coveralls and pilot goggles.

Armed with a new name and career as a wingwalker and barnstormer, she travels from town to town in hopes of unearthing clues and locating her missing friend. But Geneva discovers that her past may not belong to her . . . what she once believed as truth may be nothing more than lies and deception.

Geneva Ashcroft’s father is controlling, he wants his daughter to marry an owner of a newspaper, if she doesn’t he’s threatened there will be consequences and her younger is his target. Geneva loves her sister, she doesn’t have a say in anything in her life, her mother picks out her clothes and now she’s to marry a man her father has chosen. Geneva meets Warren Hayes, she’s pleasantly surprised, he’s a nice man and cares about her feelings and something she’s never experienced before.

Months later when his plane crashes, she’s devastated and a widow, the police think his biplane was tampered with and she's a suspect. Geneva sets out to find who sabotaged her husband’s plane, she has a list of clues from a private investigator, and to prove her innocence. Prior to their wedding and afterwards, Geneva had been getting threatening messages she didn’t tell anyone and she regrets it now. Geneva changes her appearance, she owns her own plane, she’s decides to visit the country towns listed, preforming as barnstormer and wing walker.

In America during the early 1920’s, the army had a surplus of planes left over from The Great War, if you had the money and anyone could buy one. No license was needed to fly a Jenny, and pilots would land in a farmer’s field, take people up for joy rides and others did aerial tricks, barrel rolls and wing walking.

I received a copy of Walking on Hidden Wings by Rachel Scott McDaniel from Kregel Publications and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was pleasantly surprised by this book and it's one of the best novels I have read this year, it takes you back to a fascinating time in American history, during the roaring twenties, with prohibition, speakeasies, and when aviation was in its infancy and less regulated.

I really liked both Geneva and Warren’s characters, he treated his wife as an equal, the feelings they developed for each other and he was the only person to ever show her any kind of affection, her society parents had a lot to answer for and Geneva's father was a horrible man. A page turning, thrilling and well written story about arranged marriage, secrets, mystery, revenge, religion, finding love and discovering the truth, and five stars from me.

I carried this book in my heart for years before I got the chance to write it. Scenes danced in my head. Whispers of dialog feathered my heart. It's a strange thing being a writer, but it's also so very rewarding to have a finished story. I'm grateful I finally got the opportunity to pen Geneva's journey. It belongs to you now, dear reader.

Absolutely breathtaking! Captivating! This story won my heart and soul in every possible way. Ms. McDaniel sweeps readers into the world of barnstorming bringing us into a world of adventure but it's the romance that had my pulse-thumping right along with the twisting mystery. I don't want to give anything away but the ROMANCE is stellar!! I haven't seen it done this well in a long time and it awakened the joy of reading romance all over again. And if that wasn't enough to delight me, the plot had me barrel-rolling with every twist and turn like I was sitting right alongside Geneva inside the Jenny. I don't think words can adequately express how much I loved this book but I think all readers can relate to that feeling inside when they know they are in the pages of a story that stirs up the inexplicable gratitude that we have just experienced a story that is unlike any other and will change us for the better. THIS IS THAT STORY!

Don't wait, don't hesitate, grab this story and remind yourself what brilliant story-telling looks like through the pages of this book!

Prepare for takeoff into a world of high-flying romance, clandestine intrigue, and pulse-pounding adventure with Rachel Scott McDaniel's latest literary masterpiece. From the moment I cracked open the pages, I was captivated by the amazing narrative and unforgettable characters.

McDaniel's storytelling prowess shines brighter than ever in this remarkable tale of love and resilience set against the backdrop of the roaring 20s. With flawless pacing and an intricately woven plot, she effortlessly blends elements of romance, mystery, and light spiritual truth into a seamless tapestry of emotions.

At the heart of the story lies a marriage that blossoms into a love story for the ages. Their marriage ignites into a fiery romance, fueled by passion, danger, and shared quest for truth. Warren, our imperfectly perfect hero, stole my heart with his blend of protectiveness, tenderness, devotion, and unwavering love. Our fiery heroine embodies resilience and determination, a testament to McDaniel's masterful creation of deeply relatable characters.

But it's not just the aviation action and sizzling, yet clean, romance that make this novel shine—it's the web of intrigue and suspense that keeps readers guessing until the very end. With twists and turns that will leave you gasping for air, McDaniel deftly crafts a plot that is as intricate as it is thrilling.

And amidst the adrenaline-fueled escapades, things hidden in the shadows, and heart-stopping encounters, Walking on Hidden Wings delivers a powerful message of enduring devotion, trust, and love. As the characters wrestle with their struggles and confront the dangerous shadows, they ultimately discover that true freedom lies in clinging to God for everything. As one poignant moment in the book beautifully illustrates, "God's fingerprints pressed upon the dusk, which lasted mere minutes, how much more could His touch beautify the human heart?"

In short, this book is an absolute must-read. With its gripping plot, enchanting marital romance, and timeless messages of authentic trust and hope soar to new heights, establishing Rachel Scott McDaniel as a talented author in the realm of historical fiction. Don’t miss your opportunity to take flight with this captivating masterpiece and embark on an exhilarating adventure through the skies of beautiful storytelling.

I received a digital copy of Walking on Hidden Wings by the author. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. My honest and unbiased opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the compelling writing style and the story’s dynamic content, ensuring transparency and reliability.

I read my first Rachel Scott McDaniel book last year and I continue to be blown away by every book of hers I pick up!!

Walking on Hidden Wings is such a fantastic historical, romantic-suspense! By the end of the first chapter I had a feeling I wouldn't be putting this book down anytime soon and I was correct. Each chapter, each page, each new development of the mystery kept those pages turning and turning!

I loved the formatting of this book. Present day chapters, mixed in with past events giving clues and more details to the story development. It was really well done, easy to follow and a fun way to slowly and entertainingly have details revealed!

This is one of the best suspense books I've read and feel you'll just need to trust me because there are so many aspects of this book that I don't want to give any hints at, just know THIS BOOK IS WORTH THE READ!!!

If you like historical books, suspense/mystery books, swoony-romantic books you have got to get this one!!!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Content: death of a spouse, mentions of affairs, unloving parents, blackmail, murder, mystery, intrigue, romance-kisses and mentions of intimate relationship between a married couple (no on page or explicit details) and a light faith thread.

WHAT A BOOK. I will be swooning over this one for ages. It has the PERFECT combination of my favorite themes and storylines. Marriage of Convenience, Marriage in Crisis, Mystery and Intrigue. This one kept me guessing. So many red herrings! I LOVED this. Absolutely LOVED it. The writing was fabulous. The plot was unique and captivating. I love the 1920’s setting. So much swoon 🥰.

Geneva is a young New York socialite who longs for freedom from the confines of her rigid and cold upbringing. After her father arranges a marriage with newspaper mogul, Warren Hayes, Geneva feels even further suffocated. Upon meeting Warren, Geneva realizes there is much more to this handsome man than she ever realized. Intrigued by his kind and giving nature, his air-plane adventures, and his strong character, she finds herself falling for him. But then a twist. Something devastating happens. Mystery, intrigue and heartbreak ensue for this newlywed couple. Will they survive?

This book is my FAVORITE historical fiction read this year. It’s going on my all time favorites list. Absolutely FABULOUS.

There are Christian themes throughout - I would say medium faith content. I would classify this as Christian fiction with a higher level of spice. Very well done IMO.

I can’t WAIT to read more by Rachel.

**initial reaction - I wish I could give this 255 stars. Oh my word. Absolutely one of my favorites of the year. I read this in ONE afternoon/evening. I NEVER do that. Finished it 2:30 in the morning. I have to read everything else from Rachel. More extensive review to come.

rachel scott mcdaniel you've done it again 👏

McDaniel became one of my auto-read authors last year, and this was one of my most anticipated reads of 2024 (guess what? I LOVED IT) Packed with McDaniel's signature banter and tenderness, with a twisty plot that had me like 🤯😱😍 a few times, it's a gorgeous story of faith and forgiveness.

Geneva was such a joy to follow, I just want good things for her always. She's so plucky and capable and iconic, but is also working through the heavy load of learning to forgive yourself for things that weren't your fault. Warren had to grow on me but by the end I was SUCH a softie for their relationship. (and their banter?? swoon!!) The themes of forgiveness and trusting God through hardship were beautiful!

The main characters are married early in the story, so a lot of their flirting could toe a line of "too much" for my strictly-clean friends (it had me blushing a few times haha) but there's nothing explicit shown on page! Just something to be aware of. 👍

Rachel remains one of my faves. I can't wait to see what she's got in store next! 5 stars from me!

**I received a copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley. A positive review was not required. All opinions are my own.**

(sidenote we're not going to talk about the fact that Taylor Swift's "How Did It End?" was playing as I wrote this review and it's so perfect for the beginning of this novel and I am Not Okay 😩)

This was just as beautiful as I wanted it to be! The flying and wing walking were perfect! The action and mystery were so much more developed and wild, and it was AWESOME! The ending had me shaking with adrenaline and crying with emotions.
This book was just excellent! An easy, yet forever, favorite.

"I'd once likened love to a crippling disease, but in truth, it was a cure. A haven for healing. With God's love within me and Warren holding me tight, my heart could soar to the highest heights."

What would you do if you were suddenly accused of murdering your husband?

Walking on Hidden Wings is a Christian Historical Fiction story full of mystery, aviation, romance, faith in God and delightful historical detail. Rachel's writing is wonderful and will have you turning pages to figure out where the plot is going to go next.

When a reserved socialist is accused of murdering her husband, she run away and poses as a barnstormer jumping from city to city to find answers on who is responsible for his death.

It is not very often when I am held in suspense by this genre. I found the mystery element to this story to be incredibly well done and unpredictable which made me crave more. The historical elements about aviation and 1920's America were very well done too. I felt immersed throughout the entire read from the wings of airplanes, to the halls of grand estates, I was taken on a journey back in time.

I think at the heart of this book though is the romance! It is an incredibly romantic book and while it is a Christian fiction story...I still found it to be, sultry, delicious and realistic. (can I get a hallelujah?) There is such a wonderful chemistry and attraction between our main couple as they race against the clock to beat the odds stacked against them which only made me love the story more.

All in all I was incredibly impressed with this book. I love that everything is not tied up neatly in a bow but will still leave you happy and satisfied! It is my first read by this author but I daresay... definitely not my last.

Twists and turns abound throughout this intriguing mystery as we walk alongside the heroine who leaves her glittering life behind to disguise herself as an aviatrix in order to search for clues behind her husband’s murder. Impossible to put down, this book left me in awe, inspired, and wanting to read the story again.

Oh my goodness! What a fun, twisty mystery. Love the glitzy 1920s flare along with all the historical details.

Y'all the heroine is a barnstorming, wing-walking dare devil who's trying to figure out who killed her husband all while being an accused killer herself.

This may be my favorite Rachel Scott McDaniel book yet. The mystery kept me guessing and was a good balance between suspenseful but not too dark. The aviation theme was fascinating and woven in in an interesting way without being so detailed as to become tedious. I loved the married romance and marriage restoration themes, as well as seeing Geneva mature in handling her difficult family relationships. The banter, swoon, wit, plucky heroine, considerate hero, and gentle faith elements I’ve come to look forward to every time I pick up one of this author’s books.

DNF due to sexual content.

This is an instance where I was really enjoying reading and would have liked to see how the story ended—especially because it’s a mystery. I liked the slow unfolding of the backstory and the 1920s setting with a high-society protagonist.

The blurb touches on this briefly, but

I stopped around page 150 due to a rather intimate I’m not positive anything “happened,” because I didn’t read the whole section. If anything, it was a “closed door scene.”

For the sake of conscience, I did need to stop reading (Song of Solomon 8:4). I say this as someone who is very sensitive to this kind of content. While I’m certainly not trying to say this would be a stumbling block for all readers, I also don’t think I’m the only reader who may feel this way.

This book had me invested within the first few chapters, Rachel is great at mini cliffhangers… on multiple chapters! I loved the past and present timelines and how they were written. I’ve read some books where I lose interest about halfway through but not this book, Rachel did a fantastic job. There were twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting, and I loved every minute of it. I enjoyed the fun mix of history, mystery, and romance. Her writing is beautiful, easy to read, and completely captivates you into the story. I loved Geneva, her personality (funny, smart, quick wit), and her abilities as a wing walker and well Warren is amazing (I will leave it at that). I honestly suggest going into this book a bit blind as the story will pull you in, which makes the mystery and twists that much better and keeps you guessing and wanting to read more. I highly recommend checking this book out! I mean the cover itself is gorgeous but the story… is even better ✨

Loved it!!! Geneva has gone undercover to try to figure out who is responsible for her husband's death, but instead discovers much more than she could have imagined. Interspersed throughout we are taken back in time and see her relationship develop between Geneva and her husband. Each chapter ended with a question or a reveal dropped that I had to keep reading to find out what was next. I was hooked. There is romance, mystery and faith all interweaved. I loved it. I have never read anything by this author before and I will definitely be reading more by them in the future.

Walking on Hidden Wings is a fun romp back to the 1920s. I rarely read stories from this era, and I absolutely enjoyed it. This story is of a socialite who married a newspaper mogul via an arranged marriage by her father. I feel it was love at first sight. They both felt attracted to one another at the start. However, things take a strange turn, and someone tries to kill the hero and blame Geneva.
This awesome story has mystery, intrigue, suspense, and swoon worthy romance. Ms. Mcdaniel has penned a lovely historical romance, and I highly recommend it.

Outstanding! Another win by this author and a delightful, suspenseful, swoonworthy buddy read! Such a unique premise too: aviatrix, the Roaring 20's (one of the most fascinating eras in my opinion), and a marriage romance of second chances, the power of love in healing and forgiveness, and a clever mystery that has this novel soaring for the skies. The character growth was on point, and I loved every breathtaking second. I can't wait to get into even more of this author's books and upcoming releases!!

I love this book! The touching, entertaining story packed with mystery and history drew me in with the first page and held me captive to the last! Endearing characters who touched my heart, an engaging plot with perfectly placed twists that kept me guessing, and sweet “married” romance make this a definite “sleep stealer”! The skillfully executed flashback format works wonderfully without stalling the flow of the story or creating confusion thereby adding depth to the narrative. The masterfully crafted 1920s setting and amazing aviation history made me feel like I was there watching the story unfold. I love and appreciate the imparting of relevant faith lessons. I always have high expectations for this author’s books, and they were certainly met and exceeded with this one which I consider her best work yet! I am adding this book to my Best Reads of the Year list and highly recommend it as a must read for Christian Historical Romance fans!

A sweeping, beautiful historical romance that takes you on a whirlwind of an adventure.
I loved the surprised and twists and the deep quality of this story.
The main character goes through so much over the course of the story. You see past wounds, you see flaws, you see healing in the course of the story.
I can't give away too much without spoilers, because many things happen....
And it all is so worth it!
The romance is not only absolutely swoon worthy, it feels authentic with the characters, it had a healing element to it that made it a truly memorable tale.
The historical detail was stunning. I loved the barnstorming and early aviation. It was such a unique story.
A wonderful tale of redemption, faith, and love.
A truly beautiful story.

My friends know that me and Christian Fiction aren't friends. I love my Bible, but I've found few that work for me. This was a pleasant surprise.

I loved how the romance was heavily incorporated into the plot. I also loved how truly romantic it felt. There were some swoony lines, and I loved the tension between the MC's. Color me impressed, because I was totally into it.

There is a mystery to the plot that kept me guessing till the end, which I loved, and it was fun to be constantly changing my theories. I also felt like the writing was great and consistent throughout. (This is my first book by Rachel)

There's an aviation aspect that totally worked for me. I almost wish it would have been explored more because I loved it so much.

THOUGHTS:
There were story lines and characters that weren't explored or answered. Specifically with her sister and mother. I'm not particularly a fan of unfinished plot points but there was enough going on, I can see how this wouldn't bother most people.

Some of the characters choices didn't feel realistic at times, but it worked for the drama of the story.

OVERALL:
If you like Christian Fiction, this is one I would recommend. The romance and unique plot is what shined for me and I'm happy to have found a book in this genre I can keep on my shelf.

I ADORED IT! I honestly can’t even put into words how much I loved it, but here is my attempt:

I have always said that anything Rachel Scott McDaniel writes is pure gold and a guaranteed 5 stars. She manages to deliver romance, danger, intrigue, humor, spiritual truth, and well developed characters with perfect pacing….. Every. Single. Time. But this book is her best work yet. She has beaten the gold standard of her own work!

Things I loved about this one:
* Marriage of Convenience where we get to see them fall in love AND have a happily ever after!
* Swoony romance with heat but no scorch!
* Warren….. oh Warren….. is there a hero like him? He’s not perfect, but is the perfectly flawed hero with an excellent combination of protectiveness, tenderness, and loving nature. *le sigh*
* This heroine is a spitfire, and I love her. She has been through a lot, and goes through more, but she is resilient, determined, independent, loving, and just…..wonderful.
* The plot! No spoilers, but the plot will keep you guessing (and probably audibly gasping) until the very end!
* The setting—no one writes the roaring 20s like Rachel Scott McDaniel! And the barnstormer era made such a unique and fascinating premise for this book! I was dropped right into the time of speakeasies, jazz, and biplanes, and I loved it!
* The lessons these characters learn about our Savior are deep and widely applicable. Some beautiful lessons are taught in the pages of this novel!

Basically, just run. RUN! Go get your copy. You do NOT want to miss this one. This one might be one of the best Christian Fiction books I have ever read. Rachel Scott McDaniel has a God-given talent for the written word, and this book shines. I can’t wait to see what she does next!

This story has romance, mystery, and is set in the 1920s. I loved both of the main characters, Geneva and Warren. I thought it was really cool that they were both pilots. I really felt for them, especially Geneva, when they were at odds with each other. I liked watching them mend their relationship and work together to figure out who tried to kill Warren. I loved Geneva’s personality, and when she made up stories about who Warren was to people when they were in disguise. The overall story was good. I love the author’s style of writing and felt the characters were well developed. It has light Christian themes. It does have some marital content that might go too far for some readers so I listed that in the content section. I also thought the story felt a little all over the place at times but overall I enjoyed the story!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Content for those who like to know:
Kisses, neck kisses, wedding night undressing, married couple bathing in a pond together, ogling between married couple, marital touches/makeouts, implied marital intercourse, miscarriage

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from netgalley and the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

First, this story was really different from most historical novels I’ve read over the last year. I loved the addition of a female pilot and planes. It made this story really stand out from my normal read. Second. I also loved the plot of a historical murder-mystery. You really felt the emotions Geneva was going through at each turn. Her grief, sadness, and righteous anger came through each page. This book had me questioning every character and motive. Several times, I thought I found who the murderer was, only to be surprised in the end! The writing was very well done and it definitely kept me engaged. Very unique story that I had a lot of fun reading.

For our April ladies’ book club pick, we read Walking on Hidden Wings by Rachel Scott McDaniel—and oh, what an adventure it was! From the very first page, I was hooked. I even downloaded the audiobook because I simply couldn’t get enough of the story!

I absolutely adored Geneva and Warren. The way Warren loves Geneva—with passion, patience, and perseverance through so many trials—was truly beautiful to witness. I especially loved how he helped her see who she truly is, beyond the labels and expectations her parents and society tried to place on her.

More than just a historical romance, this story was a full-fledged mystery! Twists and turns kept me guessing (and second-guessing), and the ending genuinely surprised me. I also loved the faith elements that were seamlessly woven throughout—reminding us that we are never out of God’s sight, never forgotten or forsaken, and that He always meets us right where we are with what—and who—we need. Sometimes our “angels” are real people, sent with hearts tender toward the voiceless, the poor, and the wounded.

Rachel Scott McDaniel’s gift for blending history, romance, suspense, and faith into a story that captivates from start to finish is simply incredible. She brought the 1920s to life with so much rich detail—Prohibition, speakeasies, barnstorming—and I felt like I was soaring right alongside Geneva.

I absolutely loved it and cannot wait to read more from this author!

✨ Content to Consider: Mention of miscarriage, murder/suspected murder, plane crash, poisoning, parental neglect, mistress/affair. Romance is clean, with steamy kisses between a husband and wife.

Enthralling and meticulously crafted, this period drama is the very definition of a page-turner. An absorbing read from beginning to end!

Rachel Scott McDaniel has written another stunning, edge-of-your-seat adventure!
Socialite Geneva Ashcroft goes undercover as a barnstormer searching for clues that point to who could have killed her husband. She discovers so much more throughout her journey, including a trust in the One who will never leave her. I LOVED this book! I was on the edge of my seat, anxiously awaiting the next plot twist (and boy those last 2 twists really surprised me!!). A romance with a mystery is one of my favorite genres, and Rachel truly excels at it! It’s been a while since I’ve read a marriage of convenience, and I really enjoyed this one. My heart when out to Geneva, as she learned what true love looks like. Her reactions and hesitations seemed realistic. I loved her relationship with Warren. He is such a swoony hero! They may be one of my new favorite couples 💜. I did not know much about barnstorming before reading this, and I enjoyed that aspect of the story as well. Rachel is my go-to for stories set in the ‘20’s, and this is not one to miss! If you’ve never read a book by Rachel Scott McDaniel, start with this one!

Outstanding! I have really enjoyed Ms. McDaniel's books and after reading this book, her books will have an automatic place at the top of my TBR.

I loved everything about this story: the setting, the mystery, the romance and the faith thread. I found both of the main characters incredibly enduring. The story is told from both before and after the plane crash, skillfully alternating back and forth, peeling back the curtain on Geneva's life and her developing romance with Warren.

Rachel McDaniel's signature attention to historical detail and vivid prose paints a realistic picture of early aviation, in post-WWI America. Like the stomach roiling tricks on Geneva's plane, twists and turns abound. Geneva must sort through the many clues and motives as she seeks to clear her name and discover who wanted her husband dead.

I love Geneva's journey of self-discovery. She must abandon the emotional fences she has built and learn to rely on others. As she lets down her defenses, she finds that learning to trust opens the door to a world full of love.

This many-layered story held me captive from the first page. Definitely a book for the keeper shelf!

Get ready to be swept away, to breathtaking heights!!

I just loved this book. The mystery hit the spot for me. How the main characters had to work together to uncover the truth between themselves and others was perfect?

Geneva could be your everyday rich socialite, except she is anything but.

Warren is the down-to-earth man of money, with a heart of pure gold.

When these two collide sparks fly and mystery abounds as they seek to navigate dangerous turbulence to a happy landing.

The research that must have gone into this book, made me want to go read all I could find on wingwalkers. I truly felt sucked back in time and immersed in another world. One that took me through both highs and lows to achieve a perfect end.

Truly I can not say enough good about this book. If you enjoy mystery, faith, a marriage redemption story, the twenties, and unexpected twists pick up this story today!!!

I received an ARC copy of this book, but all opinions are freely given and my own.

I have found a lot of authors via bookstagram, and Rachel Scott McDaniel is one of them. She has become a favorite. I know I will love anything she writes, because there’s so much in her books. There’s usually mystery that keeps me guessing, and there’s always complex characters that I find myself emotionally attached to. I want them to succeed! I want them to find happiness. I love reading their journeys.

This book was no different. I love that it starts off in the middle. We find our main characters in a tricky position with each other and life circumstances. Then the novel progresses with shifting back in time and then back to the future. We get a glimpse of their beautiful love story, and then flip back to their current reality of not knowing if they can trust each other. I loved this back and forth. I will admit, I don’t always love this in books, but it was done so well that I was constantly excited about either time period I was in. Their love story was beautiful. They had my heart. To then have a mystery come between them (a huge important mystery!!!) was heartbreaking. In all the good ways for book lovers. I loved watching them give to each other. Give each other trust. Give each other their history. Give each other their pains and truth. It was in this giving that their love becomes real. And then I find myself rooting for them and unable to stop smiling at their very romantic encounters.

If you like the roaring 20s, romance, and mystery, this is one for you! I did not figure out the mystery. I thought for sure I had, but I love that I didn’t!
