A snort-laughing, cruise ship romance takes readers into topsy-turvy waters When a group of four quirky friends retire on a neverending round of cruises, their attire consists of more than floral shirts and gaudy skirts. Armed with walkie-talkies and battle plans, these relationship experts--who’ve dubbed themselves the "Shippers"--target hostess Lacey Anderson and director Jonathan King in their romantic schemes. But the young couple refuses to cooperate. They’ve been on the "love boat" together before, and it went down in flames. Boss matchmaker Emily Windsor has orchestrated multiple romantic successes, and these two upstarts certainly won’t get the best of her. The chemistry between Lacey and Jonathan is obvious, but the couple rebuffs every outlandish plot and "coincidental" meeting, forcing the matchmakers to chart a new course to true love--all while inadvertently thwarting drug smugglers threatening to ruin their floating home on the ocean. This laugh-out-loud rom-com features loveable characters, over-the-top situations reminiscent of 1950s sitcoms, a dash of mystery, and romance to push the reader overboard and all in with Shannon Dunlap's new series.
Shannon Sue Dunlap writes books with a dose of laughter and a spoonful of Love. One of the greatest compliments you can give her is saying her stories made you laugh-out-loud. She favors traveling around the world, singing tunes from classic musicals, and drinking Dr. Pepper. Shannon is a die-hard fan of happy endings and believes the Heavenly Father has designed one for each of us.
I’m a cruising addict, so it’s no surprise that I chose this book!
I often get frustrated when reading a book set on a cruise ship because it soon becomes obvious that the author hasn’t sailed or completed research on the cruising experience. However, this author surprised me. Not only did what I read reflect my cruising experience, but it also reflected the reality for those who work on the ships….especially on turn-around day. Congratulations, Shannon Sue Dunlap!
I was amused at the antics of the Shippers. I’d heartily recommend this to rom-com readers wanting a great beach read. It’s clean, sweet and entertaining.
When 78-year-old Emily Windsor loses her husband, Bill, a navy captain with whom she sailed 51 years together, she decides that living out her days in a retirement home is not an option for her. After calculating that it’s feasibly possible to live year-round on a cruise ship, she makes the MS Buckingham her home. Before long, she’s paired herself up with Althea, Gerry and Daisy, other septuagenarians who live on cruise ships, and dubbed themselves the ‘Shippers’. Emily’s antics soon lead to her ‘notorious matchmaker’ status. On this cruise, her mission is to arrange a love match for Lacey Anderson.
The subplot involves an investigation into Dexter Newberg’s death. Newberg was a cruise director for Monarch Cruises and was mid-contract on the MS Buckingham when he mysteriously died. In addition to a new cruise director, Jonathan ‘Jon’ King, an undercover FBI agent has embarked to help investigate. When the two plots intersect, enlightenment and hilarity ensue. You’ll giggle as you read about Operation Ambush, Alpha strikes, street slang ‘Lechuga’, Ichthyotherapy, and ‘frowsy’.
In perfect balance with the comedy and romance, is the grounding question Emily ponders: Is independence too high a price to pay?
This is a wonderful, quick read that will have you agreeing that the best adventures happen off the schedule.
I was gifted this copy by Kregel Publications and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
What a lovely story! This was an easy read with likeable characters despite one not communicating and doing the assuming the other person wouldn't understand or accept them per say route. I figured out one of the crooks but that lessen any enjoyment of this cute tale. The four older regular cruise ladies/matchmakers; had such spunk as they were rascals but still quite endearing with their intentions and wise sentiments they shared.
The spiritual elements were done well with mentions of forgiveness, trusting God, putting prayer as a priority etc. As this was a first for me by this author with my sort of "check out new authors to see who is enjoyable/worthwhile for recommendation/ support" ; I can gladly do so and won't mind reading another by her :)
A beautiful blend of romcom with a splash of women's fiction, Love Overboard will keep you laughing from stem to stern and back again. Kick back, grab a bottle of sunscreen, and don't forget a fruity drink with a little umbrella in it (first dibs on the corner deck chair on the lido deck!). Seriously, though. The Shippers are a delightful group of matchmaking something-genarians, and Jon is just a dear. I totally called whodunnit... and didn't. Can't say how without giving stuff away. Yes, Lacey is a bit difficult at times, and yes, I wanted to smack her a time or two, but that's how it's supposed to be! And look, if she hadn't behaved in exactly the same way every time there was a hiccough, that end wouldn't have worked. Instead, it was just perfect--for this story. Hoping to get Abby's story soon! Oh, and that "women's fiction" bit? The Shippers' relationship is a great look at older friendships bathed in the Lord's goodness. I hope I'll be half as fun and frisky at their ages.
Is it possible to give 10 stars to a book? I don't think I have enjoyed a book this much since Loyally, Luke by Pepper Basham. What a treat this book was! Almost makes me wish I was on a cruise to enjoy the setting even that much more.
It is the perfect vacation read. I laughed so much at the love matching antics of the retired ladies, that I couldn't get enough of them! I'm really really hoping that the author is going to do more stories with them. You bet I'll be writing her and asking her.
There was nothing I didn't like about the book. I loved the characters, the setting, the humor and the day to day walk of faith.
*thank you to the author and JustReadTours for sending me a complimentary copy to read and review. All thoughts are my own.
“When you love deep and hurt deeper, it’s hard to let people in.”
📚☕ What fun!!!
I want to avoid ANY spoilers so you can enjoy this contemporary Christian novel as much as I did, so I will be brief and vague:
I adore the fact that the premise could have been simple with a couple of common tropes, but it was so much more.
I liked the mystery of the female and male main characters being written in third person point of view so that too much wasn’t revealed too soon. In other words, I didn’t know everything they were thinking.
It took a while for all to be revealed on both sides, albeit a little too long, but I enjoyed it all!
Favorite part of the book? Hands down, the shippers! 😆
The words that came out of those quirky, hilarious, mature ladies was laugh-out-loud fun! The best part of the book for me was when, in the midst of the weightier moments, one of the shippers would say something absolutely hilarious to break up any seriousness.
Overall, a delight. 😀
CONTENT Squeaky clean romance with no profanity - Hallelu!
MY RATING 🌟🌟🌟🌟
There will be an in-depth review of this book (and other reviews & recs) in a June reading wrap up on my ‘Clean Reads’ YouTube channel. 💙
This was a funny matchmaking story mixed in with a mystery. I enjoyed the older characters and cruise setting. I appreciated the faith elements and multi-generational relationships. 🚢🏝️❤️
Move over, Captain Stubing and Dorothy Zbornak! There's a new love boat and a new set of golden girls that have captured my heart! In Love Overboard, Shannon Sue Dunlap has gifted readers with an endearingly quirky group of senior citizen matchmakers who will keep you laughing out loud with delight and wanting to gather them all up in one big group hug. Meanwhile, a swoony romance unfolds despite some choppy seas, and the dash of suspense adds further opportunity for delightful mayhem to ensue. If your heart needs a boost of joy, then Love Overboard - with its lovable characters, hilarious antics, sweet romance, and gentle faith message - needs to be your next read!
This was such a fun story that takes place on a cruise ship. This is a second chance romance. And I really feel for the man, Jon, he works so hard to get Lacey back. She has issues she has to deal with. But that doesn’t stop the 4 elderly ladies who make it their duty to be matchmakers. These ladies go to the extreme to get Jon and Lacey together. I loved these old ladies! Had good light Christian content throughout. And there was even a surprise twist at the end. The story also has a little bit of a mystery element which was pretty predictable but I still loved it. The story did feel a little slow at certain points but overall I really enjoyed it! Definitely recommend!
Four older women retire and live year-round on a cruise ship. Together, they are called The Shippers, and they are the matchmakers on the ship. Lacey Anderson is the ship's hostess and Jonathan King is the Cruise director of the ship. Lacey and Jonathan knew each other from another ship. Sparks fly but there are some complications that seem to be difficult to overcome--but The Shippers are a determined group of ladies. At the same time, there is a mystery of who is smuggling cocaine on the cruise line. Are they on this ship? Love Overboard offers a mix of romance, humor, and mystery to the reader. I enjoy older people so I especially liked The Shippers in this book. I also was rooting for Lacey and Jonathan. I enjoyed getting to know the ship crew as well as the other characters. There was a couple of twists near the end of the book that I didn't see coming. Love Overboard has a lot to offer the reader.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through JustRead Tours. All opinions within this review are my own.
Four meddling ladies aka The Shippers with a specialty in matchmaking aboard a cruise ship...one female cruise employee (Lacey) resistant to love...and a criminal aboard smuggling drugs. This combination equates to grins aplenty as the cruise ship travels from port to port.
Enjoyed getting a glimpse of what it's like to travel and work on a cruise ship. It's an interesting premise that The Shippers choose to live on a cruise ship rather than a traditional retirement community. Better meals, better entertainment, etc.
Cute cover!
My gratitude to Celebrate Lit for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.
“Do you remember the first words you ever said to me?” “Were they ‘nice to meet you’?” “No. You skipped the formalities…You said, ‘Are you going to pick up that trash.?’”
There’s nothing that makes me laugh more than a bunch of “mature” senior matchmakers. The Shippers, as this group likes to be called, live aboard a cruise ship and decide to take matters into their own hands to find hostess, Lacey, a match with the ship’s director, Jon, even though she put him in the friend zone years ago.
I loved the hilarious antics often gone wrong of The Shippers, but what made this stand out was the mystery to be solved of an onboard drug ring. Dunlap brought everything together so well and even in the midst of sparks of romance, the humor, inspiration, forgiveness (in a few relationships), and intrigue found a place on the high seas and made for a very entertaining read.
I loved the characters, especially the ringleader, Emily, and there are hints of more to come.
Content: mild romance; talk of drugs; references to religion

This book gave me so many smiles. If you're looking for some characters who are quirky and entertaining from the start, the Shippers fill the bill. The romance was sweet and the mischief abounded. A nice, easy read.
Love Overboard tells the story of a lively group of older women, known as "The Shippers," who live on a cruise ship and dabble in matchmaking in the pursuit of love. The Shippers are led by the assertive Emily, and the group includes the sociable Althea, the always serious Gerry, and the elegant and pampered Daisy. Together, they plot to rekindle the romance between ship hostess Lacy and ship director Jonathan King, despite Lacy having relegated Jon to the friend zone.
Alongside the love story a mystery unfolds involving drug smuggling on the ship, with Jon at the center of the investigation. The revelation of the culprit's identity is surprising, yet ties things together seamlessly.
Love Overboard is full of humor, with The Shippers' plans often going hilariously wrong. Emily, in particular, stands out and quickly became a favorite of mine.
Love Overboard presents a romantic comedy with laughter, unresolved love, forgiveness, and an intriguing mystery, making it a delightful read for those looking for a good romance and a lot of laughter.
Love Overboard is the first book I have read by Shannon Dunlap.
Dunlap has created a whimsical cast of matchmakers with a unique story thread. These four retired ladies (aka the "Shippers") live on the cruise ship, creating mischief with the best of intentions. They give off Golden Girl vibes in their wit and interactions.
Lacey knows what the Shippers are about and wants nothing to do with it. While she loves the ladies, she is not looking for love. She has trust issues and would rather focus on her job and taking care of her parents.
Jon is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Lacey again. As the one who got away, Jon is happy with the Shippers matchmaking attempts. However, Jon is keeping secrets and is on board the ship investigating, and neglects to tell Lacey the details.
Read for:
🚢second-chance romance
🚢love on the cruise ship
🚢quirky characters
🚢mysterious thread
🚢Golden Girl vibes
🚢witty banter
🚢easy read
Thank you to the JustReads Publicity and the author for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
What a FUN cast of characters in this RomCom meets cozy mystery novel! Right out of the gate you’ve got women in their seventies grabbing walkie talkies and packing up for their next matchmaking mission on an up-and-coming cruise. Cruising and matchmaking isn’t just a hobby for these women…it’s become a way of life. This time, they have their sights set on Lacey Anderson, the cruise ship’s hostess.
This book was like a mash up of The Golden Girls and The Love Boat. All the feels of a vintage sitcom with non-stop banter, laughter, quirky characters, and adventures. Completely clean and closed door with elements of faith woven throughout. The perfect book to add to your Summer TBR.
Coined “The Shippers” – Emily, Geraldine, Daisy, and Althea (how could you not fall in love with a group of older women with those names?) had originally planned on setting Lacey up with the ship’s pastry chef. Unexpectedly, Lacey’s ex-boyfriend, Jonathan King, has joined the crew as the new cruise director. Not at all concerned as to why Lacey and Jon had broken up, these Shippers can see and feel the chemistry still left between the two and set their plan in motion. Let me say, these women know how to put the FORCE in forced proximity. HAHA
Jon is on board undercover with an FBI agent trying to crack the case of drug smuggling that’s been happening within this specific cruise line. What fun when The Shippers catch wind of that bit of info – never at all hesitating to insert themselves into any situation they see as needing a bit of assistance. LOL
A wonderful and lighthearted RomCom that’s sure to put a smile on your face!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
LOVE OVERBOARD is a cozy romantic suspense all set on a cruise where four mischievous old ladies try to match the two main characters, who are both cruise staff, together. It has somewhat of a small-town feel as all the characters are on the cruise together, quirky characters with plenty of laughs in the old ladies, and a second-chance romance. Readers of the genre and light romantic mysteries may enjoy this one.
I really liked the premise for this story, the characters, and the romance. The cover is also adorable. The four old ladies are what I would call a hoot. They all have their own distinct personalities and contributions to trying to match up to the two love interests. Jon is a well-rounded, good looking, charming, dependable type who goes along good naturedly about the whole thing. Lacey has a soft spot for the ladies and gets roped into their traps regularly. She is pretty frustrating for most of the book, but of course redeems herself in the end. The suspense aspect was interesting although I felt it wasn't worked well into the story and didn't work for me. It also didn't surprise me. The ending was sweet.
In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a light, sweet read with some likable characters and faith elements. I felt like it needed more development and not everything worked for me, but otherwise it was an enjoyable read.
Content: Clean Source: I received a complimentary copy through Celebrate Lit, which did not require a positive review. All opinions are my own.
I have been trying to talk my husband into a cruise for the longest time now. It seems that reading about one is the only way I’ll be sailing away anytime soon…
So, I was so excited to dive into such a fun romcom with a splash of mystery. ”The Shippers” a group of ladies in their 70s, who who truly make matchmaking a way of life. Emily, Geraldine, Daisy and Althea cracks me up, they were quirky, nosy, and full of life. Their mission was to set Lacey up, who is the cruise ship hostess. They said their eyes out on the pastry chef until they meet Jon…. Who just happens to be Lacey‘s ex.
I loved how Lacey and Jon’s relationship grew and developed. Lacey had a lot of unforgiveness she was dealing with. There was faith in this book and I absolutely adored it. I loved how Emily encouraged Lacey and John to pray. Seeing Lacey become free from those who hurt her, it was beautiful.
This was a wonderful Christian romcom. I thoroughly enjoyed it and definitely recommend it. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series by Shannon Sue Dunlap.
Four little old ladies are living out their retirement in the ultimate way — on a cruise ship! Their banter, antics, and matchmaking make for a fun trip.
The ladies have set their matchmaking sights on cruise ship employee, Lacey, and the new Cruise Director, Jon. Unbeknownst to these ladies, Lacey and Jon have a past. Not only that, but both have secrets. Secrets about their jobs, secrets about their families, and secrets about what pulled them apart. Throw in a mystery and some good old-fashioned sleuthing and you get a fabulous rom com.
I REALLY enjoyed this debut novel! The author has such a fun and witty writing style. SO many moments that made be laugh - particularly some of the character descriptions.
I think if I had seen more of Jon and Lacey’s relationship, communication, inner dialogue, etc— this would have been a 5 star.
We are following three different POV’s so maybe that’s why it felt harder to get “close” to any of the characters.
But overall, this was a fabulous book and I highly recommend!
I’ve never been on a cruise and honestly, the experience is not high on my list of things I’d like to do. However, when I read the book blurb for Love Overboard, I knew I wanted to read it. I mean, who could resist a group of quirky, matchmaking retirees?
For pure fun, Love Overboard did not disappoint. From hilarious outfits to over-the-top problem passengers, yes, I laughed all the way through the book.
I also enjoyed learning more about the cruise experience without having to risk seasickness or deal with crowds in tight spaces myself. The novel spans three back-to-back cruises on the same ship. The retirees live on the ship, and the heroine and hero work on the ship, so there is no break in the continuity of the story.
Overall, it is a satisfying read–perfect for summer.

“Love Overboard” is a contemporary Christian romcom. Lacey works on the cruise ship and 4 older retired ladies that jump from cruise to cruise are aboard the Monarch. They like to meddle and match make, better known as the “ shippers”. They were quite funny and I could totally see a movie being made off this. Emily and Lacey were always keeping eachother on their toes . Jon and Lacey have history and it’s entertaining to read what the shippers will do to go out of their way for pushing these two together. Retired life on a cruise sounds easy and fun for these ladies! There is a mystery involved which will keep you interested as well. This is a fun read that would be perfect for the beach or summer. These ladies will make you laugh easily.

My thoughts: 📖 Page 121 of 303 Chapter 20 - This is barely holding my attention. It's not bad but the shenanigans are completely unrealistic for a cruise. 📖 237 - Chapter 40 - I'm ready for this story to be over, but it won't be tonight. 📖 269 Chapter 47 - Okay I'm gonna have to admit it I didn't see any of this coming, I guess this was worth the wait.
This isn't my first "Silver-haired Matchmakers on a Cruise" plot, so I can honestly say it took a while to heat up. The way the story was written I felt like I started in the middle of a series and their antics were way over the top but by the last quarter of the story I was fully invested and enjoyed the drama. I'm not sure I'd read book 2 but there's a chance. I was surprised I didn't figure out the mystery sooner.
Recommend to others: Maybe. This story had a lot of storylines but did well balancing the genres and Christianity.
Love Overboard is the first book I have read written by Shannon Sue Dunlap. It was an easy read, well written and rich in vocabulary. Full of wit and adventure. It was truly an enjoyable read. I look forward to reading some more books by Shannon Sue Dunalp.
The character development was good. I enjoyed getting to know each and everyone. The Shippers brough a fun dynamic to the storyline. I hope to be that cool one day, scheming and playing match maker for the crewmates. Getting to the interlayers of Lacey was fun to.
The relationship between Lacey and Jon was sweet. Lacey tried her hardest to deny the relationship was anything. The Shippers worked hard to rekindle the relationship. It was fun watching the ways that they tried to match make. Overall, the relationship was sweet and nothing over the top.
The storyline was fairly good. I enjoyed the setting of the cruise ship. Having gone on my first cruise this year, it really brought the story to life. I enjoyed the mix of mystery as Jon was on the lookout for who was smuggling drugs on the cruise ship. It was the prefect mix of rom-com with a light dusting of mystery.
Shannon Sue Dunlap does a fairly good job intertwining faith throughout the book. I always appreciate when Christian fiction points back to God.
*I received a complimentary copy from the author and voluntarily chose to review it. All opinions are my own.
This was such a fun read! Of course, there's a great love story. Lacey and Jon are both a little on the stubborn side and their second chance romance was done wonderfully. I found myself rooting for them to get their happily ever after...finally! I couldn't get enough of them. There was also a little bit of mystery mixed in which made the story all that more intriguing. Throw in some beautiful faith messages and there was really a lot to love here.
Honestly though, it was the Shippers that really made this story an absolutely delightful read. I always love stories that have meddling grandparents... and with this story you get a whole group of them to keep things entertaining. (Even if they aren't the actual grandparents, but a group of older cruise goers). Their matchmaking schemes had me laughing out loud and I loved their sass. So very entertaining. I don't know if the author plans to write more books surrounding these characters, but I would 100% read them all!
**I received a complimentary copy via Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
The best way to summarize this book is… if the iconic Golden Girls were Christian retiree ladies in their 70s aboard a cruise-ship and had a matchmaking not-so-secret society. Emily, Althea, Daisy, and Gerry have the perfect balance of witty banter, strong faith, and encouragement in their friendship bond that is truly friendship goals.
Jon & Lacey are the victims… err, recipients of the Shippers matchmaking endeavours, and they are a cute couple who go through every level of miscommunication and hurdle of distrust before a HEA.
If you want a light & breezy cruise ship romance, with a side of mystery, septuagenarian best friends, and all the witty one-liners you can hope for (Gerry, you are the 70yo version of me and I love you for it!), definitely give this one a read and enjoy a few laughs!
Content: very mild innuendo; a brief mention of book having a racy cover
Gerry, Daisy, Emily and Althea live on the MS Buckingham. It was cheaper than a retirement home and they get food and maid services. They are known as the “Shippers” because they like to play matchmaker on the ship. This trip they have their sites set on Lacey a stewardess on the ship. They already had a potential match in mind but the appearance of Jon changed that.
My thoughts:
This is my first book by @shannonsuedunlap. The chemistry was well written and believable. Lacey was a relatable character; however, my favorite scenes involved the Shippers. They were just the cutest little old ladies that liked to be everywhere and in everyone’s business. All three should have worked for the FBI or some other agency.
I hope there is more books because I need more of The Shippers.
Thank you @shannonsuedunlap @kregelbooks and @justreadtours for the complimentary copy of Love Overboard. I loved the story.
This is such a fun story! I loved the unique premise of Emily and her 3 friends being retirees and/or widows living on a cruise ship and enjoying setting up couples among the staff. They all appreciate the hard work that Lacey puts into her hostess job and the caring heart she has for those around her. When they set their sights on setting Lacey up with her ex, things get interesting! I loved the humor in this story, but I also appreciated that it was balanced with some seriousness, like why Lacey ran the first time she and Jon were together. I also love the way faith is woven into the story. I look forward to the next book in this series!
I received this book from Just Read. This is my honest review.
I couldn’t stop reading this hilarious novel about a group of modern-day-Golden-Girls-turned-matchmakers-turned-undercover-agents in their quest to bring together couples and bust a drug ring operation aboard their cruise ship.
The characters are lovable, the plot is just silly enough to be believable, and author Shannon Sue Dunlap is the queen of tummy-tickling metaphors. My only disappointment is Dunlap’s missed opportunity to share the Gospel through her work, though she does discuss God and prayer throughout the story.
If you’re looking for a light-hearted laugh-out-loud read, then Love Overboard is definitely for you! Let this one bypass your TBR list, and jump right in!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. A positive review was not required, and all opinions are my own.
What a charming and hilarious read! The “Shippers” are a fantastic group of ladies and add so much to the story. They are easily my favorite thing about the story. The mystery angle was fun and I loved the addition of that thread since I love mysteries. The ending was pretty much perfect and overall this book is completely enjoyable. My only issue with the story was I struggled at times with Lacey, her attitudes were a little much for me at points in the book, but she had some nice character growth towards the end and that was good. This one is guaranteed to put a smile on your face!
I received an ARC of this book and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
