Breathtaking. Alive with color. Romantic. Whimsical. The garden designs of Ryan Gainey have garnered international acclaim for both their wealth of inspiration and uniqueness. Now, Ryan Gainey shares his garden and ideas, showing how to weave the garden into your life and your home.
Like many of you, we saw the documentary about Ryan Gainey and were inspired to learn more about him, which led us to his book, The Well-Placed Weed. Mr. Gainey was a genius at gardening, particularly in the cottage garden style, and his interpretation of that genre was extraordinary. Part gardening book, part memoir, The Well-Placed Weed is a wonderful book and one we go back to many times for inspiration, not only about gardening but about leading a life of meaning and purpose. (You'll love the documentary, too!)
After seeing the film about Ryan Gainey’s life entitled The Well Placed Weed, I was so inspired that I bought this book. I immediately saw my garden in a whole new light and my creativity soared. I worked in the green industry for many years and would hear stories about Ryan from time to time but I never had the opportunity to meet him. Still he feels like a kindred soul. I think it’s amazing how his success grew from his heart. His Southern roots mattered so much that he returned to a quiet country life at the end. I just moved to the country and now have my own Chinaberry tree that will become a loving memorial to Ryan.
I learned about Ryan Gainey from a documentary on his life by Steve Bransford and Cooper Sanchez. The film appeared on the PBS show Reel South. Through the show I learned of his book. Sadly, by the time I learned about Gainey, he was already dead but his pioneering work in Southern gardening lives on in this book. I love this book and read it/look through it often. If you enjoy gardening, you owe it to yourself to find the documentary and watch it, then find this book and make it a part of your library.
