Marshals #6

Tied Over

Rate this book
Josiah Redeker has been tied up, tied down, and just plain tied to Bodhi Callahan since the younger marshal was paired with him five years ago. It was an easy slide from partners to best friends, and though Bodhi wanted more, Josiah thought Bodhi could do far better than him. That made for a bumpy ride, and, of course, the moment Josiah realized that trying to live without the man he loved more than anything was not something he could do, that was when Bodhi broke the big news that he was getting married. Adding to that nightmare, they got reassigned as partners because other people needed them more.

It’s a disaster all around, and all Josiah sees ahead of him is pain—and not only from getting shot.

But what he thinks he knows for sure isn’t exactly all there is. Turns out, he’s not the only one who’s missing his touchstone, and Bodhi might be fraying at the edges, coming undone. When two people have been tied together over and over for so long, it’s not so easy to get loose. And maybe neither wants to be free of the other, and that could be their future, as long as no one comes between them… with a gun.

We're in Chicago again with the Marshall service, so more or less on the home turf of Mary Calmes's readers and what can I say, she's back to her classic writing style with a bit of modernization. If you're a follower of her newsletter story you're feeling quite a home and I have to admit that's something I really like at the start of December.

It's probably not to introduce new readers to the Calmes style because it's not really a stringent story line or one case the story is following. It's just the tale of what happened in the last weeks of Jed's and Bodhi's life before they finally recognize that they're it for each other. Unfortunately it takes the abrupt cancelation of an already planned wedding to bring them to that understanding and I'm not exactly a fan of that topic. There are too many examples where that leaves a bad aftertaste but here it's managed somehow okay.

There is just something I adore about this series and characters - it just works!!!

This book, this relationship, their story was exactly what I needed. A delicious MM friendship that is fated to be more. The banter, the connection - it's perfect in every way.
Partners becoming lovers is my new favorite trope.

This is the first "new" book I read in MONTHS! I've been in such a dump after Aja James' last book that I devoured and waited in vain for more...

It was good. Mainly for the narrator who is one of the MC's - Jed. His partner Bohdi, I don't know. I would say meh, except for how devoted he is to Jed. Bc B was a manwhore while he was partners with J for 6 years. They fell in love with each other pretty much within the first 2 weeks of being partners, and yet over 6 years, they never - neither of them - took the next step. Meanwhile, B slept with anything that moved and paraded those men in front of J which ended with them moving out of their shared apartment and into separate places and ended with them also not being partners for a while and B getting engaged with someone wholly unsuitable for him.

There's a little saving grace that B is a butt virgin and only J got to have that. But still. I feel like 6 years of sexual and emotional tension shouldn't have taken a separation and near-death experience (SUCH A TROPE!) and an impending marriage to resolve.

So that's my main complaint. And the fact that the pacing is kinda off. I was loving it until it got to be like they were old biddies the way they talked so much. I just don't think that's what men do. And then there was not even a kiss or touch until 90% and whomph! sex and more sex. The end.

It was abrupt.

But what I liked most is Jed. He's just such a likable guy. The way he interacts with everyone including B. He just overshadows B. I didn't necessarily think B deserved him with all the manwhoring etc. except that J wanted him. And what J wants he deserves.

I'd recommend this book, but it's not one of the best MMs I've read in recent history. That status belongs to the incomparable Aja James, esp. since I also just finished her new book (for the 2nd time) Embrace of Dragons by Aja James

Josiah Redeker and Bodhi Callahan finally get their HEA! 🥰

'Tied Over' is filled with action, humor, and passion. We get to revisit our favorite series characters who've been there for all the good and bad times and finally see Redeker and Callahan stop dancing around each other after 6 years.

I love the Marshals series so much, especially the steady theme of found family. I love getting more time with good friends, and seeing even the most insane circumstances work out. I love we get more on page time with Sam, Ian, and Miro, but found myself more excited to get to the next part where I would see more Sam, Ian, or Miro, instead of being interested in how Bodhi and Jed finally get on the same page.

I'm thinking it's been so long to finally get Redeker and Callahan's story it demands a reread of the series to refresh memories. That'll be the plan when the audiobook comes out: to re-read/re-listen to the series from start to finish.

3.5 stars rounded up mostly for Sam, Ian, and Miro.

So, I didn't love this and I sort of wish I had done a re-read, at least the meeting of these guys bit, re-read.

I jumped in because after the last George book I knew I had to catch up on the He Said, he saids. I got to a point where I needed to quit those or be spoiled about this so...

That being said, I liked the book but I did not like the romance and setup. I did not like that one of them was engaged and very, very close to the wedding. But, I did like everything else that was going on and I loved all the cameos.

Anywhoo...Making a note here since there will be a huge gap in my reading. I re-read 2020 and 2021 of the He Said, he saids and kept going with 2022 and 2023. 01/21/25 - 01/25/25. I am going to read 2024 until the next Marshal book and then finish.

Loved this one

If I can't have Ian & Miro, then Bodhi & Jed are a great alternative.

This was a fairly straightforward plot, for a change, and I actually liked the slower pace and the more intimate elements of Jed and Bodhi finding their way back to each other.

Interesting, while Bodhi's fiance was in this one a fair bit, I didn't mind because we got to meet his family, who were pretty cool, and it proved the catalyst for Bodhi realising he couldn't marry someone else.

Surprisingly, this one's really low steam, nothing happening until the final quarter of the book, but it worked and I didn't mind it so much.

I'm baffled by who the couple are in the final book though, I've never heard of them but I've also not read any of the other interconnected series' either. Maybe they come via there.

Sadly this was very underwhelming 😑😑😑

This quote by Miro says it best

“Just nice to see this finally taking off.”
“This?” “Yes, Jed. This. You and Bodhi. I mean, Jesus Christ, if it weren’t for the last minute, huh? Or were you thinking you’d wait until his fortieth wedding anniversary?” “Funny. You’re so funny.” “Don’t I know it.” We were quiet a moment. “But really,” he said, smiling at me, “I’m proud of you. It was time.”

Bodhi would have married Hayden and then what. It was last minute to share your feelings Jed 🙄🙄🙄

The whole plot with Brodie was dumb too. AND Brodie and Bodhi are WAY too close in similarities. Authors shouldn’t do this 🙄🙄🙄 with all the names to pick, pick two that do NOT sound almost exactly the same
😑😑😑

And the first time they have sex is 92% in.. way to wait until the absolute last minute I mean the characters have only been waiting 6 years to be together. AND the sex in the car. Ugh. Seriously. This book was a huge disappointment. I think I’ll put a pin 📌 in this series for now and not read the last book. I learned a lesson though. This author is not binge-able. Can’t read too many of her books in a row. And balls to head is NOT a thing 🥱🥱🥱🥱

DNF at 27%

This book is a big NO NO for me. The chaos and the attempts at humor by bringing every secondary character into the room and them slinging nonsense at each other were not palatable at all. Run of the mill straight to DVD action flick like story I just could not read any further. I do not know the MCs or even like them. Everything is one dimensional and boring. I was reminded why I no longer read Mary Calmes books.

Instead of harping on timeline errors, I’m going to cut and paste some quotes. You decide if there are errors.

From book 3, Tied up in Knots, Miro speaking to Callahan:
“Kid?” I repeated to Callahan.

“I’m twenty-seven,” he told me. “But being eleven years older is apparently this whole huge time gap that puts him out of reach.”

So, Bodhi (Callahan) is 27 and states that Jed (Redeker) is 11 years older making Jed 38.

From this book (told completely from Jed’s POV):
when we first became partners, I was thirty-eight to his twenty-seven. Now, five years later, I was an old man at forty-three

EXCEPT (from this book), Jed is explaining the timeline of his and Bodhi’s work relationship:
The third year, we moved to Chicago from Las Vegas,

🛑 Jed is saying that in their third year of being partners, he and Bondi transferred to Chicago. I completely agree with this timeline. At the point when Miro met them in Vegas, they had been partners for 2 years. BUT how could they be 27 and 38 when Miro met them AND 27 and 38 when they first became partners two years PRIOR TO MEETING MIRO?!?

From book 5, Balanced and Tied, Eli says:
But four years ago, Kage had promoted a lot of us,

Everyone was promoted the day Redeker transferred to Chicago. So logically that means that Redeker, and Callahan (who showed up a week later), have been in Chicago for 5 years. Five years plus the two they were partnered in Vegas, adds up to 7 years as partners. Sometimes Jed says they’ve been partners for “almost 6 years.” What gets me is right at the beginning of this book, and at other points of the story, this is Jed’s math:

The guy I’d been with for five years, whom I’d transferred to Chicago with, sort of, three years ago. I’d come to the Windy City maybe a week ahead of him,

🛑 THEY TRANSFERRED FIVE YEARS AGO. I thought maybe Mary Calmes was going back in time. Maybe this takes place one year before Eli and Celso’s book. But, NO! Because later he talks about how Celso is Eli’s fiancé. They also talk about a guy named Brodie who transferred into Chicago the same day as Jed. They talk about how he was fired A YEAR AGO. That happened in Eli’s book. So it’s obviously a year AFTER that book took place which would actually make it 5 years since they transferred to Chicago!

My other issue was this. From book 5 we get:

“Yamane didn’t report the fact that Pazzi was on drugs,” Ian told me. “I sent him down to Asset Forfeiture. I don’t expect him to live.”

But in this book, when talking about where Yamane had been during Pazzi’s six months of rehab:

Sen Yamane, had been out on administrative leave for three and then sent to another district to work until Pazzi returned.

🛑 WHHYYYYYY can’t the facts line up????? Was he in Asset Forfeiture, or was he on administrative leave and then sent to another district?

🛑 Other errors bothered me too, but this is already too long. See my notes and highlights for other things I noticed that didn’t line up with previous books.

Errors aside, ✅👍🏻😃👉🏻 I liked the part of this book where it was about Jed and Bodhi. Their time with Bodhi’s fiancé’s family in Seattle was great! But the case at the beginning with all the different Russian names (Loginov, Lenkov, Petrov, Serveev, Maksim, Grigory, Burian) and mobs and who was double crossing whom, was just too confusing. The thing toward the end with Brodie (don’t even get me started on Brodie and Bodhi 🙄) was weak and underdeveloped.

By the time Jed and Bodhi finally admit their feelings for each other and land in bed, it feels perfunctory. It’s not loving or emotional. It’s more like they’re just taking the next step by making their relationship physical and it’s what you do. Their second sex scene was more emotional, but it was just to end the book. So that didn’t work for me either.

As much as I have loved the Marshals series, I think it’s best to stop after Miro and Ian’s books. There was just too much of a time lapse between book three, when we were introduced to Jed and Bodhi, to this book. It made it all feel disconnected.

3.5 stars that for the life of me I can't round up.

Josiah and Bodhi have been partners for 6 years and they just clicked from day 1. And when I say they just clicked, it is as always happens in the M/M romancelandia where the 2 men have no problems being in each others space, cuddling and just have to look at each other and have whole convos -no shade thrown here to the author because that happens across the whole M/M romancelandia since the time of ever-.

I think in Miro and Ian's 3rd book we were first introduced to Jed and Bodhi, in which book I had a difficult time differentiating between who was when because of all the pining going around from both sides, and pretty much that's the only info from their past we get, apart from how they just kept missing being on the same page throughout the years. So being thrown in their friendship at the point where it turns to something more, even though Bodhi was engaged to be married, I just couldn't see the supposed built already rapport they should have. The whole friendship component is just not there on the page, I just have to take the word of the characters about what great friends they were.

And then the same goes for their romance and love for each other. The story ping pongs from one situation to another that Bodhi and Jed only after the 85% mark spend any significant time together to even have sex.

Did I enjoy it? Yes. Will I re-read? Nope!

Brilliant.

I absolutely love this series, the last book with Eli and Celso wasn’t my favourite and I think it was because it had a different feel to it and I was so used to Ian and Miro being the main characters, but this book with Jed and Bodhi was right back to what I loved about this series. These two were featured in a couple of the earlier books and it was obvious there was a lot of unresolved feelings there, so it was great seeing them finally come together. This one is all told from Jed’s pov, and he’s an amazing character, it was full of lots of cameos from all the characters throughout the series as well as some from A Matter of Time series, we also got some Chickie time as well, which I absolutely loved.

I love Mary Calmes writing style, her writing is so unmistakable and so familiar to me that its like sitting and having a conversation with a friend. like most of her books, I read this in one sitting, I couldn’t put it down once I started. If you’re a fan of this series then definitely recommend this one.

This is classic Calmes, which I usually five-star, but that last chapter was gooey without much attempt toward good prose--many unnecessary words, for example--and I wish I'd known to skim or skip it. That aside, a good 'chapter' in the series.

Can’t get enough of this couple

I adore the whole series. I’m not sure where this book ranks yet for me, give me a few days and another two or three start to finish read throughs. If you’re not already reading this series or this author you are seriously missing out. Humor, action, an HEA, and the appearance of everyone’s favorite dog, Chickie baby.

I wish I had read the previous books in this series, ‘Marshals’ by Mary Calmes. ‘Tied Over’ may even be the last in the series.

There were so many characters in ‘Tied Over’ that have had their own books prior to this one. They all appear here in the very action packed story of Bodhi Callahan US Marshall and Josiah Redebeker, an Investigative Officer.

Josiah aka Jed is the older guy but neither ages are specified, but there seems to be a bit of a gap. They had been working partners back in Vegas for a Few years until Josiah upped and went to Chicago, leaving Bodhi behind. Apparently both wanted to be more than work partners, just not at the same time, so they lost their chance. Then a couple years later Bodhi got transferred to Chicago too, both have different work partners.

Bodhi had met Hayden a very wealthy man and now they are engaged to be married. Josiah wants Bodhi to be happy, but inside he is sad.

When Josiah is shot and seriously injured Bodhi is there in a flash and takes care of him. Even though Bodhi is supposed to be at Hayden’s parents home to be introduced to the family and friends, he puts it off. Then he takes Josiah there to recuperate and meet Hayden for the first time. 💔💔 for Josiah.

Events happen at Hayden’s, Josiah is star of the show with the whole family, Hayden doesn’t like what happening.

In the middle of a huge reveal, an emergency occurs back in Chicago, the guys are recalled, and all mayhem breaks out.
***************

It took me a while to get into this story, it only took off for me after Josiah’s was injured and I began to see what part the other played in Josiah and Bodhi’s work life. Again this was due to my coming into the series too late.

Josiah was very easy to engage with first, Bodhi took a while as his character was different when he was with Josiah, sassy, funny, but when he’s with Hayden he is more subdued.

It was an exciting read mainly because of the fast action events that erupted on several occasions, shootouts, dead bodies, kidnapping, hostage taking, etc. All in a few days work for US Marshals, apparently.

I was thrilled when a new Marshals book came out and this book was as wonderful as the others. Jed and Bodhi were so good together and when Jed was hurt Bodhi made sure that he was taken care of and you kept on thinking that he really couldn't be getting married to someone else. And the visit to Hayden's parents house was amazing and then Jed became a true hero when he realized that Stella was afraid of Luke and I was so glad that he acted on instinct and proved that Luke was as despicable as you thought and saved her and Margo. I was so glad that Jed spoke his mind to Bodhi and he broke off his engagement and was annoyed at some of the reactions especially when they had to leave because Ian was in trouble and they were so self-centered to think it was just an excuse to leave. I was glad that Ian was saved and that Bodhi moved in with Jed. Brodie's getting into the house was frightening and I was so scared that he was going to hurt Chickie and so glad that Jed was so smart and kept him safe until the rescue. They are so good together and so glad they adopted Gordo and decided to get married. Love the group and wonder if more stories are coming.

I'm not sure why I let myself get so invested in these two, just to be let down time after time... but, of all the ways I saw them getting together... this would NOT have been it. But, it happened and my heart is glad to see they finally pulled their heads out of their a$$es ... just sayin'!!!

Mary Calmes is awesome!

This is the sixth book in her Marshals series, and I loved reading it. Just so you know, this one stands alone and you can read it all by itself. However, once you have read it, consider going back and starting at number one, and reading all the others.

I adored the Marshals books, so of course I bought Tied Over as soon as it came out. I miss Miro and Ian, so frankly, without them, Tied Over is just a regular Mary Calmes novel. But that's still okay. Also, this one totally stands alone, no need to read the other ones first.

The audio version of Tied Over is narrated by Nick J. Russo, who delivers a tolerable performance.

Okay

I have to admit, this was not as good as the other books in this series, in my opinion. I was never drawn in, or loved the characters like I have with the past stories. I wish I could have loved it. I am not saying not to read this, others may have a different feel about it.

Mary Calmes at Her Best

This has been one of my favourite series and I was so excited to find out we were getting another book.

We met Redeker and Callahan in a couple of previous books and it was obvious that there was a lot of unresolved tension and chemistry between them but they were partners at work and best friends and even shared an apartment for a while. Neither acted on their feelings, scared they would lose so much if it was not reciprocated. They were a double act, so in tune with each other that they could finish each others sentences and communicate without words.

When Bodhi announced his engagement Jed was gutted, he’d waited too long.

This book was so good, the action, banter and hot 🔥🔥🔥 scenes, it was a slow burn, and the deep feelings Josh and Bodhi had for each other coming to the boil, all whilst dodging bullets. I love Mary’s writing style and this book was, as always, wonderfully written and reminded me why she is always a one click author for me.

I really hope we get another book in this brilliant series and I really recommend you read it and if you haven’t read the authors series A Matter of Time, where it all started with Jory and Sam you should really check it out.

I absolutely love Mary Calmes! This series is one of my favorites, even though Matter of Times series is number one. So glad to see Sam Kage in this. I love the Marshals series and this was just as great as the others.

This one has been coming for some time and Mary Calmes did not disappoint.

Jed Redeker is determined that his partner, fellow marshall, Bodhi Callahan should only have the best. And despite how much Jed loves him, he is also pretty determined that there is someone more worthy of Bodhi’s love than he.

That lasts until Bodhi finally seems to give up on his pining and moves on with his life, falling in love and getting engaged. That’s what it takes for Jed to realise that he has lost his chance at having Bodhi be his partner in all ways, and life kinda sucks. Add to that getting shot and being forced to vacation with Bodhi and his fiance and Jed is pretty sure he’s in hell.

Man, I had forgotten how much I loved the way Mary Calmes writes her characters. They’re not perfect – both Jed and Bodhi are argumentative, pig-headed, stubborn, know it alls with alpha male stamped all over them. But the streak of protectiveness in each of them and just how much they care about each other make them pretty much perfect together. It is a tried and trusted method that Mary Calmes uses – the main lead who everyone loves and sees in the best possible way, along with the partner who just has to get them to get their head out of their behind to see how happy they could be together. And it totally worked with Jed and Bodhi – no matter how frustrating the two of them could be (Jed is so determined that Bodhi has the best that he ignores his own desires for FOUR years), you are still rooting for them to make it.

Add in fellow marshals from the past – including Sam Kage who is one of my absolute fave of Mary’s characters, alongside Miro and Ian of course – and this story took me away from daily life and into the whirlwind that is the Marshals series. If you’ve read any of the other books, you know pretty much what you are in for: action, romance, banter, friendship, and men who will stand in front of a bullet for someone because it’s the right thing to do.

I regularly re-read the previous Marshals books, and having book six to add to that re-read list makes me a very happy person!

I don’t think I’m alone in having been waiting for Callahan and Redeker’s book since they first popped up in Marshals.

Though, I admit, once Mary started writing dual POV and even introduced it in Eli’s book when the series had up until that point been singular POV, I was worried. When Mary mentioned working on this book in a newsletter and said “Callahan and Redeker's marshal book that is so far a bit different than normal”, that compounded my worry. When I finally read Eli’s book and it was a big, fat disappointment, I was almost dreading reading this.

But Mary pulled through. This is very Classic Calmes, and fits seamlessly into the Marshals series (unlike Eli’s book).

I’m so glad she didn’t write dual POV. I’m so glad this wasn’t “a bit different than normal” (or if it was, I didn’t perceive it to be). I’m so glad that Callahan and Rederek got the book they deserved.
