Bella Bright and the Witch Tree: A brilliantly fun and spooky story!

Rate this book
If you go down to the woods today...

Eleven-year-old Bella Bright has invited her three best friends to visit her new cottage, which stands in the shadows of a ruined manor house. As they explore, Bella thinks she catches a glimpse of a pale face in one of the empty windows...who could it be?

Things go from spooky to scary when they get lost in a hedge maze, and find themselves hurled back in time by the mysteriously burnt willow tree growing at the centre. Now trapped in 17th century England, Bella must uncover the mystery of how the manor was destroyed, find out whose face she saw at the window, and try to get herself and her friends back home to their own time before they are stuck in the past forever.

Frighteningly good!

This spooky sequel to last year’s award winning debut ‘Bella Bright and the Ghost Game’ had me gripped from page one. Bella’s no longer the new kid, but life (and friendship) is never simple for teenage girls, is it! Especially when you throw ghostly apparitions and a spot of time travel into the mix…

New and delightful characters join the familiar four as they take their unexpected and perilous trip to the past, pushing their relationships to the limit. These include a pair of brave and wise women, who refuse to be cowed by a despicable villain driven by prejudice and hatred, and a young boy struggling to interpret the world through his own eyes.

Bella herself must find out how strong, resilient and courageous she really is through heart stopping moments and cliffhangers aplenty. The plot builds to a thrilling climax - the crisis of this story may be the best written chapter I’ve read all year - and a truly satisfying denouement.

Don’t miss this, it’s perfect for independent readers aged 8-11 who like spooky horror with high stakes (and lots of puns).

This outstanding book is extremely well written with lots of description, imagination and hard-work. Carolyn Ward is an excellent author who puts lots of effort into her books. I definitely recommend this book to 7-11 year olds as the story features simple vocab as well as an amazing storyline and structure that is easy to follow along. Bella Bright is an eleven year old girl who recently just moved to Spooktwist Cottage and invited her three friends. As they explored the cottage, Bella caught a glimpse of a pale figure. Unexpectedly, they get brought into the past. Who was the figure? How will they get back?

Absolutely loved this! Another spooktacular story from Carolyn Ward, this time there's a hedge maze and time travel and lots of creepiness throughout. Kept me on edge with just the right balance of tension, adventure and ghostliness. Can't wait for more stories from this author!
