Unfortunately, this book did not work for me and I DNF'd at 29%. There were a lot of good things, and I enjoyed the cozy camaraderie between the main character and her friends and cat. The murder mystery was set up well, and I was interested to find out the whodunit. However, I did not vibe well with the amount of conversations between the animals (Pepper and Paul). I felt that Pepper (cat) was always talking to Paul (dog) and explaining why humans were doing things the way they did. This style probably works very well for a lot of readers, and I would still recommend the book for them, even though it wasn't for me. Tides of Trouble: A Black Cat Cozy Mystery is book #4 in the The Maggie and Pepper Mysteries series by Wendy Ledger.
I really enjoy this series. Maggie, Owen, Pepper, and Paul make a good team. I felt so bad for Pepper. He tried so hard to be helpful. I should’ve guessed who the guilty party was, but I didn’t until it was revealed to everyone. I like how everything wrapped up and I look forward to the next book in the series.

After a late night of dancing one of the most prominent men in town is found dead. Maggie, Owen, Pepper and Paul are digging into what happened. A sweet cozy mystery. Lots of surprises, with great and slightly quirky characters - human and animals alike. A really wonderful book to read and just relax.
I was so excited to read the new installment of the Maggie and Pepper series and it did not disappoint. This book is refreshing and extremely cozy. Paul makes a great addition to the family of animals and humans. Also, a fantastic ones sitting read.
Although the ending was very good, I was disappointed with the plot that treated women that way. The main women characters came through in the end. The talking animals were interesting.
This was such a fun way to wrap up the series; although, I really hope this is not the end. I will really miss these characters. Sure, the writing is simple, there were some typos, the plot was pretty weak, but the sleuthing team really hit me at a time when I needed them the most. I love the inclusion of another pet detective and how Pepper really encouraged them to be involved in investigating the murder. Per usual, I did not guess the murderer. I love when that happens. I'll keep a lookout for more in this series (hopefully!). I really hope this is not the end.
