With no streetlights and little light left in the sky, Erica nearly missed the narrow track to the isolated cottage. There was still blue police tape stretched over the front door, and the broken window where the killer had got in was poorly secured with cardboard, sodden from the storm. Erica tried the switch by the door and her heart sank. The power was off. Her neck prickling, she ducked under the tape and stepped inside…

Detective Erica Sands is called out to a lonely cottage in Dorset, England. A local woman, Jane Smith, has been found murdered in her home. At first, it looks like a burglary gone wrong until Erica’s attention is grabbed by a seemingly minor detail. A framed photograph of Jane’s two cats – one black and one white – triggers a strange disquiet in Erica, which turns to shock when she discovers a cryptic note written in blood tucked beneath the frame.

Erica’s curiosity deepens when she's summoned to a meeting with the Director General of Highmoor Prison, who reveals an unsettling twist. Her estranged father, Charles Sterling – a convicted killer himself – claims to possess crucial information about Jane’s murder. He's willing to share it only with her, leaving Erica torn between anger and a nagging suspicion that he might hold a key to the case.

As she grapples with what to do next, Erica discovers a chilling connection between the murder victim and her own past, just as the investigation takes an unexpected turn when a pair of twin girls are snatched from outside the gates of their school on a sunny afternoon. Are the two cases connected? If so, time is running out for Erica to find the girls alive…

With a sophisticated killer still on the loose, and Erica’s father doing everything he can to get into her head, the stakes have never been higher. The Trap will keep you on the edge of your seat from the first page!

Gregg Dunnett

Gregg Dunnett is a British author writing psychological thrillers and stories about travel and adventure, usually with a connection to the coast or to the oceans. Before turning to novels he worked as a journalist for ten years on a windsurfing magazine, briefly owned a sailing school in Egypt, taught English in Thailand, Portugal, Turkey and Italy, taught sailing in Greece and Spain, and also had several rather duller jobs along the way.

His brother is the adventurer Jono Dunnett who in 2015 windsurfed alone and unsupported around the entire coastline of Great Britain, and who is currently windsurfing around the coastline of Europe.

Gregg lives in Bournemouth on the south coast of England with his partner Maria. They have two young children, Alba and Rafa, for whom the phrase “Daddy's working” has absolutely no effect.

Gregg's debut novel was an Amazon top 100 best seller in the UK and was downloaded over a quarter of a million times.

Gregg on why he writes:

"I’ve always wanted to do two things in life, to write, and to have adventures. When I was a kid I imagined grand affairs. Kayaking across Canada, cycling to Australia. Whole summers in the Arctic. Did it happen? Well, partly.

I’ve been lucky, I spent some years abroad teaching English. I worked in sailing schools in Greece and Spain. I really lucked out with a job testing windsurfing boards for the magazine I grew up reading. I made a questionable decision (ok, a bad decision) to buy a windsurfing centre in Egypt. I’ve also done my fair share of less exciting jobs. Packing and stacking potatoes on a farm, which got me fitter than I’ve ever been in my life. I did a few years in local government which taught me that people really do have meetings that result only in the need for more meetings, and they really do take all afternoon. I spent a pleasant few months in a giant book warehouse, where I would deliberately get lost among the miles of shelves unpacking travel guides and daydreaming. I’ve done a bit of writing too, at least I learned how to write. Boards Magazine isn’t well known (it doesn’t even exist today) but it did have a reputation for being well written and I shoe-horned articles in my own gonzo journalism style on some topics with the most tenuous of links to windsurfing. But the real adventures never came. Nor did the real writing.

Then, in 2015, my brother announced he was going to become the first person to windsurf alone around Great Britain. I don’t know why. Apparently it was something he’d always wanted to do (news to me). It was a proper adventure. It was dangerous, it was exciting. Even before he set off he was interviewed on TV, in the papers etc... Some people thought he was reckless, some thought he was inspirational. Lots of people thought he’d fail.

But he didn’t. He made it around. He even sailed solo from Wales to Ireland, the first to make the crossing without the aid of a safety boat. I was lucky enough to be involved in a planning level, and take part in a few training sails, and the last leg of the trip. But he did ninety nine percent of it on his own. One step at a time, just getting on with it. That was quite inspiring.

In a way it inspired me to pull my finger out. I’d been writing novels - or trying to write novels - then for a few years. But it was touch and go as to whether I was going to be one of those ‘writers’ with a half-finished novel lost on a hard drive somewhere, rather than someone who might actually manage to finish the job.

I’ve now got two lovely, highly demanding children, so real adventures are hard right now. I still try to get away when I can for nights out in the wilds rough camping, surf trips sleeping in the van, windsurfing when the big storms come. I love adventures with the kids too.

I hope in time to get around to a few real adventures. I want to sail across an ocean. I want to bike across a continent. I definitely want to spend more time surfing empty waves.

DCI Erica Sands, South West Murder Investigation Team #2

Three months ago, fifty five year old Jane Smith is found dead in her cottage in rural Dorset, is it a case of a burglary gone wrong? Why is Commander Black so interested in this case? He asks Erica some very odd questions about it. On a search at the cottage she finds a strange, disconcerting concealed note. Later, Erica is summoned to a meeting with Black and James McDonald, the Director of high security Highmoor Prison where her serial killer father resides. Charles Sterling claims to have information on the Jane Smith death but he’ll only give it to his daughter in person. Erica has not seen him since his trial and incarceration but fervently believes this is a trick and initially refuses to play his game.

Parts of this book absolutely wow me. Erica’s understandably complex feelings about Charles, how her life has been ripped apart by him is done so well you can’t help but feel empathy and sympathy and fully appreciate her reasons for caution. As for Charles Sterling is he the monster Erica believes or a reformed character as McDonald tends to think? The sections of the two together are powerful and positively electric as they verbally bat back and forth as he toys with her like a cat playing with a mouse. The scenes are reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter’s first meeting with Clarice Starling - an inspiration I wonder?? There’s a chilling and palpable sense of something very bad about to happen which proves to be horrifyingly and shockingly true. There are some jaw dropping and high octane moments in which you can scarcely breathe. The complex plot is fast paced but there are some opportunities to inhale oxygen again as the author takes the storyline into some fascinating and clever lines of investigation. You’d expect some maths (head above but even I with my dunces cap on can see it’s clever!) as Sterling is/was a well known mathematician but there’s also cryptography and some psychology which is all told with an air of authority!

The storyline builds and there are some extremely tense and gripping scenes. However, Erica brings down one manipulated soul a bit too easily in my opinion and one or two key aspects are easy to predict - that’s not to say these things aren’t exciting as they undoubtedly are. It all ends on a cliffhanger- will she, won’t she? I for one can’t wait to find out.

Overall, this is shaping up to be a very good series, I enjoyed the first one but this is in a different league to that. Erica as a central character is an excellent conundrum and DI Luke Golding is immensely likeable too.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Storm Publishing for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

This one just didn’t do it for me unfortunately. It should have been right up my street but I found this totally unoriginal and uninspired.

A blatant rip off of Silence Of The Lambs, even down to the Perspex cell underground, here we have a less likeable Clarice and a less interesting Hannibal.

The killer that the Hannibal character is helping is hopelessly disappointing, as is his storyline. Throw in some crypto maths nonsense and you have a book that tries too hard, is totally unoriginal and just not very good.

Many thanks to the publisher for the ARC through Netgalley.

Detective Erica Sands is called in on a murder crime which seemed pretty cut and dry until she saw the picture and the cryptic note written in blood behind the frame. Soon after she is approached by the Director at the prison her father is incarcerated at as he has come forward with info on the case , but he will share it only with his daughter. Erica wrestles with the prospect of seeing her father all these years after he killed her mother and only sister, but only she can stop the killer who has now taken a set of twins.
This fast paced game of cat and mouse between Erica Sands and her father was intense and kept my attention throughout the book. With interesting characters that have you trying to decide their motives and how if possible to stop them. I loved this book and look forward to reading more by Gregg Dunnett.

When I saw Gregg Dunnett had released a second Erica Sands book, I couldn’t press “read now” quick enough! I absolutely loved The Cove, and The Trap definitely didn’t disappoint.

Book 2 in the Erica Sands detective series sees the relationship between her and her serial killer father develop further. When it becomes clear he is involved in yet more murders, Sands agrees to meet him. But can she work out how the mastermind is participating from his high security cell?

I love Dunnett’s writing style. Suspenseful, thrilling and oh so clever. Another well thought out crime piece. I’m so glad we got more from her father in this book, and loved that the relationship with Golding carried on - the pair make a wonderful team.

Please, please tell me we get a book 3! I need to know what happens next.

Massive thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for my advanced copy.

Excellent, and much better, second entry in the series finds our detective heroine (much less annoying than in the first book) tracking a killer with possible connections to her imprisoned serial killer father. Dad claims to have knowledge of the murder and potential follow-up killings and tries to use this to build a connection with his estranged daughter. Past relationships, codes and manipulation all play a part in the story going forward, with obvious nods to The Silence of the Lambs (a prison guard named Barney, among them). A few of the twists and developments I saw coming long before, but there was still plenty to watch unfold and enjoy. Well-written, as is the norm with Dunnett, with strong characterizations and a solid ending that sets up the next entry nicely. Looking forward to it. Dunnett's best since his Rockpile books. 4-4.5 stars.

✨My Thoughts✨
I’m being totally honest with you when I say that I’ve not stopped thinking about the first book in this series since I read it back in July ( Link in Bio) so I was over the moon when I got auto approved to read The Trap!

This case involves Erica’s father who is a notorious serial killer, could he hold the key to the murder or could it just be a ploy to see Erica?.

In this instalment we got to learn more about Erica’s past and what the relationship with her father was like before he committed his horrific crimes, he’s just so creepy and manipulative.

What I want expecting was the huge twist and shock! It was so harrowing, I couldn’t believe what I was reading!.

I hope we get a book 3 because I need to found out what happens next.

I was a little disappointed by this one. I absolutely loved The Cove, but this one wasn’t as gripping to me. I don’t think I liked the back and forth between Detective Sands and her father in prison. I found the dynamic to be obnoxious more than enthralling.
That’s ok though, this author is great and I look forward to the next book.

The Trap is the second book in the Erica Sands series, and what a fantastic sequel it is! I really enjoy Gregg Dunnett's writing style. Every single chapter pulled me in, bringing us closer to solving the case, with plenty of twists along the way. There's a particularly shocking discovery early in the book, but I won’t spoil it. The case becomes personal when Erica’s father, a convicted prisoner, holds the key to cracking it.

Charles Sterling, her enigmatic father, adds so much intrigue to the story. The cat-and-mouse dynamic between him and Erica makes for gripping reading. For some reason, every time Charles appears, I picture Michael Sheen in the role—likely because he’s portrayed a similar character as a convicted serial killer on screen.

Overall, _The Trap_ was an enjoyable read with a fantastic plot. I can’t wait to dive into more Erica Sands books!
Thank you NetGalley, Storm Publishing & Gregg Dunnett for the arc!

The Trap

Gregg Dunnett

I am not sure what happened... I loved The Cove, but this one... just not so much.

It wasn't bad, and I did enjoy it. BUT.. and there it is, that BUT. Right, we all know what that means. There was something missing and I am not sure if it was just too soon and my expectations were too high.

I read this book over a weekend and it was a incredible read. The lead character Erica Sands was really well drawn, with a dark and fascinating background. The whole story was gripping from start to finish.
I have now purchased book one in this series, and plan to start reading that next. Highly recommended, you will not be disappointed.

Just ok compared to Greggs previous books

Very unrealistic story. Too much detail on math and ciphers. Conclusion not surprising did not really see a twist. Basically I just did not like the storyline.

I love Dunnett but this was so far fetched. Little Ghost is so much better. The cove was good. But this one was just ranting that made no sense. He has si many books out there that are so good. But not this one.

A creepy psychological thriller whether it comes from the murderer or Erica's past, never far away ! Overwhelming tension all way through, I couldn't put the book down. Good characterisation focusing on the psychological side .... Some gore details were depicted which I could skip as there were not many of them. I also had enjoyed book 1 and now I can't wait for the third book!!

2,5 estrellas.

Here I am, up past my bedtime again to finish a DCI Sands story and i’m already desperate for the next one! I was started this series due to netgalley allowing me access to this book, but it really exceeded my expectations. I’m not going to give anything away, but this storyline was even better than the first! I did think the last 15% of the book was slightly rushed, as it took a LOT of time and detective work to get any sort of idea how Erica’s serial killer father is involved with the string of murders she is investigating. Once the clue was out there it almost felt like an abrupt arrive-at-destination-and-CUT!!!! Honestly that is about as much of a critique as i can provide, because i did really enjoy this from start to finish. This book kept me hooked and the amount of detail was, literally, perfect. Like i said, i’m already waiting for the next book because that ending was a BRUTAL cliff hanger!

D.I. Erika Sands investigates criminals like the one that raised her. Her dad Charles Sterling is in prison for killing her mom and her little sister but spared her life because he said she was the most like him her family wasn’t his only victims and because of that he has a life Time sentence for years he has tried to get Erica to visit him in prison something she adamantly refuses to do but while investigating the murder of a woman call Jane Smith she learns he claims to have the information but we’re only give it if she does exactly that . Her dad was not only a serial killer but a journalist and a genius. During his trial he became infamous because of that people write him in prison Erica knows this Hass to be the only way he could’ve gotten any information about a murder that happened 27 years after his incarceration. She knows this little game he is playing is some type of manipulation but it will come back to haunt him in a big way before it’s over she will not only catch a murderer but uncovered victims never heard from before. I have left a lot out of my review because I don’t like reading summaries and when I started this book had no idea what it was about but from page 1 was stuck to the dialogue the name of this book the trap is a perfect tidal but in the end who is trapped? I really like Erica Sands quiet yet stoic demeanor I love the respect she has for her fellow detectives and those under her this was such a great book and a book I definitely recommend if you like crime mystery then you definitely don’t want to miss this one it really is a great read! I want to thank storm publishing and NetGalley for my free arc copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

I enjoyed reading The Trap as it has all the ingredients of a great story and once you start reading it you must reach the end ASAP so your curiosity is sated! Erica is sharp but her estranged father is sharper and out of the blue he is the one who is able to give her leads regarding the murders that she has been dealing with, one worse than the other... The story has a very good plot, it's well-written and very entertaining. Highly recommended!

A Complex, But A Very Intriguing Read.
The Trap by Gregg Dunnett is a Suspenseful thriller and is the second Erica Sands book. The first in the series was The Cove and the second The Trap carries on with the story of Erica Sands detective series and follows the relationship between her and her father who murdered her whole family and is a serial killer and is in jail for life.
This story starts when Detective Erica Sands is called out to a lonely cottage in Dorset, England. A local woman, Jane Smith, has been found murdered in her home. Erica discovers a cryptic note written in blood tucked beneath the framed photograph of Jane’s two cats. It becomes clear to Erica her father although in solitary confinement is involved in yet more murders. Erica reluctantly agrees to meet him and her relationship with him will be tested to the max as Erica tries to work out how her father and his cryptic mastermind is participating from his high security cell with a killer on the outside.
The Trap is a well thought out crime with plenty of twists and turns throughout the book. A Good story with great characters and a complex, but a very intriguing read. I enjoyed the relationships between the team especially Sands and Golding. The whole story is gripping from the very first page and the ending of The Trap was unexpected. I certainly look forward to reading more from Greg Dunnett. I highly recommend this book and believe me you will defiantly not be disappointed. Thanks to NetGalley and to the publishers of this book for giving me a free advance copy of the book to preview and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
