Rate this book
A family is divided when its favourite daughter is forced to flee rural Ireland and to seek her living in war-torn Birmingham.

Bridie McCarthy loves her family’s farm in the remotest part of Donegal, even though she’s forced to work hard when all of her siblings leave home. She can’t bear to let down her beloved parents – until a horrible act of violence gives her no option but to run away. She turns to the one person she can trust – big sister Mary, now settled with a family of her own in Birmingham.

Life here couldn’t be more different, but slowly Bridie comes to see the good side of a busy city, and begins to regain her confidence. But fate has more trouble in store, as World War Two looms, threatening everything she’s fought so hard to win.

I can´t convey into words how much i liked this book.Beautiful love story.Story begins before and than continues during WWII. It is heart wrenching and almost painful to read at times, yet I felt I developed such a personal connection to the main characters that I wouldn't have dared to put it down until I knew that everything turned out happily ever after.I will read more books written by this author in the future .

Although Bridie was blessed with the utmost affection of her parents, genuine friendship of Rosalyn, unflinching support of Mary and unconditional support of Tom Cassidy, she was torn by the wicked fantasies of her uncle France and the evilness of her old neighbor Peggy.

The story lingers around why Bridie runs away from the comfort of her home, the love of her parents and the companionship of her dear cousin ?

And and and, can somebody please bring Tom Cassidy to the real world ?

Whenever the Irish are portrayed in these stories they are as a nice, warm, friendly and family orientated and this story is no exception to that. Although the main character, Bridie, has more than her fair share of troubles she manages to stay positive most of the time and if there's a problem she just gets on with it but the war pushes everyone to the brink including her.
This tale has it's fair share of emotions and it is that well written and the characters so believable you want to fight their battles for them.
A very good read

From the very start I was hooked on this book, I did wonder about three quarters of the way through, how Birdie could cope with so much tragedy and heart ache. I struggled to put the book down and got to bed on a night. I felt the story could continue at the end, how Bridie and Joe lived at the farm with her parents. Good read, would recommend.

I have never read a more beautiful story of survival in love in my whole life. Everything about this book was absolutely lovely, although the romance tended to only be in a small middle section of the story when it should’ve been spread out. A wonderful, heart wrenching story perfect for any fan of World War 2 novels.

This book was somewhat difficult to read for me and the character was overwhelmingly hard-headed. I didn't appreciate the extreme sufferings added to her life one after the other. You look forward for a breather as you read but only to be disappointed because more issues about the war made their lives more complicated. I got impatient that I skipped pages to get to the end.

This book was middle of the road for me. The main character Bridie was quite annoying. Sure terrible things happened to her but like usual, the heroine was overwhelmingly stubborn and I guess this ensured there was something to push the storyline along.
