Khao Lak, Southern A young Muay Thai boxer living in poverty must find the inner strength to fight if he wants to realise his dream of competing at the world-famous boxing arena, Lumpinee, in Bangkok.Conflict arises in the form of treacherous friends, temptation and loneliness. His world is magical yet brutally realistic. Full of kindness, courage, pain and brave deeds. In the world of Muay Thai, things are rarely as they seem, and the final battle reveals an earth-shattering fairy-tale ending.

This book is so different to anything I’ve ever read before. The setting is what first interested me. It is clear that the author has clearly been here before and done the research. I felt I could really understand what was happening and picture myself there. I’ve seen Thai boxing in Thailand so had an idea of the setting but Clarke really brought it to life. I was a bit unsure about the magical realism but thought it was very cleverly pulled off. The characters were authentic and the book really took you on a rollercoaster of emotions.

A fantastic, interesting character driven story with good pacing. Reach for the sky and follow your dreams no matter what.

This is an intriguing mix and well worth reading. There’s a kickboxing story, a bit of mystical fantasy and a goal set and strived for. All mixed in with Thai rural life, gambling and saving the environment. I was impressed with the descriptions of the kickboxing matches. Great pace and energy. The humour lightens the story (especially a grumpy lion when its advice is ignored, made me laugh). Thank you to LiterallyPR Ltd and NetGalley for the ARC. Step into the vibrant world of Muay Thai with S.J. Clarke's gripping novel, "Ringside Gamble." This electrifying story follows Nong, a determined young boxer with dreams as big as the bustling streets of Bangkok itself. As he strives to compete at the legendary Lumpinee boxing arena, readers are taken on a rollercoaster ride filled with heart, grit, and raw emotion.

Clarke masterfully weaves a narrative that pulsates with life, portraying not just the thrill of the fight, but the intense challenges that come from loyalty, betrayal, and the crushing weight of poverty. The backdrop is a vivid tapestry of treacherous friendships and moral dilemmas, where each decision might just tip the scales between triumph and disaster.

What truly sets this book apart is its authentic depiction of the Muay Thai underworld. I am going to be brutally honest and say, this is a book I wouldn't normally pick up. The difference is that the description crept into my mind, and I thought I needed to check this out. I started reading with no expectations and have to say I was wonderdully surprised by my interest in this book!
The way in which this author writes about Thailand and the Muay Thai boxing that Ringside gamble is about shows a definite depth of research and emotions that surround the sport and country. The characters felt all the more real, and their commitment to the sport is crystal clear.
I have to say, the author never shies away from the brutality and sacrifice of the characters to the sport. We see not just the ups but the downs and the darker side to the sport. I was absolutely riveted with every layer to this tale.
Ringside Gamble is such a multi layered, tense, and uplifting read! One book I am so happy to have tried!

Thanks to Lit Pr and the author for my gifted book to write my honest review as part of the tour.

SJ Clarke takes us on a no holds barred deep dive into the world of Muay Thai boxing. A detailed and informative (considering it’s a work of fiction, I learnt a lot!) read. Ringside Gamble is full of action and emotion as young Nong finds his way in this competitive world encountering good and bad in characters and situations along the way.
A fascinating debut novel.

I signed up for the tour on a whim and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by Ringside Gamble. I enjoyed it so much more than I thought.

Nong's story unearthed an abundance of emotions. We read of the poverties he and his family had to endure. His strength and determination to compete in Lumpinee, to make his family proud.

It reminded me of The Karate Kid and Daniel, who too was bullied as a child, before becoming the best at his game.

The author clearly has an affinity with Thailand and I felt I'd learnt so much about the country, its people and its history by the time I'd finished the book.

Characters throughout felt authentic and I quickly found myself emotionally in Nong's character and was rooting for him all the way.

Ringside Gamble is a thoroughly enjoyable action packed read.

Love, love, love Ringside Gamble. I practice Muay Thai and relish a magical realism story. The author has achieved an amazing feat of writing this novel. It's unique and the only authentic book on Thai boxing I have ever come across that entertains and enthralls - praying there's a sequel. What happens next to the heroes Nong and Natcha?

I couldn't help but be drawn into this book after diving into the first few chapters. Following Nong on this journey has been an absolute delight! The character development is truly exceptional, making the story come alive. Set in a mesmerizing fantasy world, this Thai kickboxing tale infused with magical realism is absolutely riveting. The themes of Thai rural life, gambling, and environmental conservation add depth and richness to the narrative. The vivid descriptions of the kickboxing matches are so exhilarating and filled with energy, keeping me on the edge of my seat. The subtle humour sprinkled throughout the story adds a wonderful touch of lightheartedness.

Ringside Gamble is a book that's full of the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of Thailand, all surrounded by the world of Muay Thai Boxing, both training and tournaments.

It's a coming of age story, as we follow our main character Nong, as he strives to make his mark in the Muay Thai scene, in a tale filled with raw emotion, heart and determination.

The author weaves a story that's full to the brim with life, challenges, loyalty and betrayal, all set to a backdrop of crushing poverty.

It's a powerful story of the fight ( both figuratively and literally ) against adversity against all the odds, and I'm sure it'll captivate your heart, as you root for Nong through all of his struggles.

I read this in two sittings.

3.5 stars rounded up. This was a well-written story with engaging characters and interesting themes. I liked reading about a world that I'm not familiar with. The story was a bit slow for me though and I found myself skimming a lot at times. I wouldn't say it was a favorite book of mine or particularly fun to read, but there was a lot of promise here and I can see why other readers really seemed to enjoy it.

I read a copy of this book from NetGalley. All comments are my own.

The author's depth of research shows in the level of detail in the world building, from aspects of Muay Thai fighting, to the recipes used, with even a hint of magical realism.

Those who wish to understand what it is like to compete in Muay Thai and/or living in Thailand might find this interesting.

A brilliant debut – it’s intense, authentic, and emotionally complex. The story is brutal in parts and full of sentiment in others as it vividly brings Thailand, its culture, and the importance of Mauy Thai to life.

It’s an absorbing, well-researched novel, the importance of the characters’ values in shaping their paths shines through. Muay Thai is introduced to the children at a young age for them to hone their craft, they learn discipline, resilience, sacrifice, and we see the duty they have to honour their family underpinning everything.

The struggle to make a living from Muay Thai is realistically depicted, it’s tense and uncertain. We also see the darker side of the sport, it’s open to corruption and unexpected dangers and Clarke pens an unflinching look at the issues faced in a thought-provoking and action-packed way.

Amidst the temptations, betrayals and difficult choices a wonderfully engaging story unfolds of community and striving for a better future. There’s mysteries to unravel and an intriguing mystical element that fits beautifully. Don’t hesitate to pick up a copy to enjoy!

With thanks to @literallypr for my copy and place on the Tour.

Ringside Gamble by S. J. Clarke was an excellent read from start to finish, especially as I have been to The Far East and Bangkok and had the opportunity to go and watch Thai boxing. The author S. J. Clarke has done a lot of research to write this book. I thought I was back in the Far East re-living my fabulous holidays, sadly without the smells, beautiful Thai food, and the heat! lol.

Khao Lak is a young Muay Thai boxer, and he is living in poverty. But, he has a big dream and has to find the inner strength to become a Thai boxer.........he wants to compete at the world-famous boxing arena, Lumpinee, in Bangkok This is going to be very hard for Khao even to make his dream come true, but Khao is determined to do this. Sadly, conflict arises from his so called friends and now with temptation all around him and now loneliness, he is the only one to make his dream come true!. People tell him he is dreaming but he has his heart to go to world-famous boxing arena, Lumpinee, in Bangkok and become a Muay Thai boxer.

Does he do it?

This book was excellent. Even

my hubby read it and enjoyed it.

I highly recommend this book. A must-read that will inspire you to go for your dreams!

A knockout read with heart, history, and high stakes! Ringside Gamble isn’t just a coming of age story—it’s an immersive journey into the rich cultural landscape of rural Thailand, where the weight of family, heritage, and ancestral responsibility looms over the young protagonist like an unshakable shadow.

S.J. Clarke’s storytelling is both vivid and evocative, bringing to life the sights, sounds, and traditions of a world where Muay Thai fighting isn’t just about winning—it’s about honour, survival, and carrying the hopes of generations past. The tension builds masterfully, weaving together action-packed ringside moments with the deeply personal struggles of families and individuals torn between duty and ambition.

Ringside Gamble is a beautifully layered story about identity, sacrifice, and the fight to carve out one’s own destiny. A must-read for anyone who loves stories where culture and personal stakes hit just as hard as the punches in the ring.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – Powerful, immersive, and unforgettable!

What a great book!

I have an interest in Muay Thai Boxing so of course, I was interested in this book!

The story follows Nong who wants to train and then fight in a renowned arena on Lumpinee, Bangkok. The reader follows his journey.

After a chat with S.J. Clarke, I found out that she has a love of Muay Thai and also trained in a gym in Thailand! With this in mind, you know that this book is very authentic as the author is very knowledgeable.

While we follow Nong, we are also treated to vivid descriptions of Thailand alongside the boxing events and training - from food to places, we really do see Thailand while Sat at home in our comfy armchair!

The educational part of the book was also fantastically woven throughout the story so you are constantly learning traditions and also about the sport itself!

A fantastic read and one I recommend you try!
