4.5. This has easily become one of my newfound favorite celebrity romances. What I thought would be a leisurely read turned into a binge read. The blurb sets the stage for everything that could possibly go wrong, and trust me, it does. Fran, a celebrity gossip writer, becomes a personal assistant to a well-known actress. The banter between characters is something I truly loved. While some plot points were predictable, the story unfolds in unexpected and delightful ways. Without giving away any spoilers, I can confidently say it exceeded my expectations. If you're a fan of witty banter, well-developed characters, and the celebrity troupe, this book is a must-read. I received a copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve come to rely on Nan Campbell to deliver thoroughly entertaining stories with substance. I enjoyed reading this book very much, and would probably have read it in one sitting if life hadn’t got in the way.

Secrets that threaten to come out and ruin everything are usually very uncomfortable for me, especially when they’re about a character misrepresenting themselves, or hiding part of themselves, but Campbell writes it in a way that made the unpleasantness take a backseat, in huge part because I came to like the characters so much. Which was not a given, as the first word I wrote in my notes concerning Fran was that she was obnoxious. That’s probably my main criticism about this book, that Fran seems to have undergone a personality change in a few pages that, while welcome, happens too quickly to count as character growth. It made rooting for her a lot easier, however, and I chalked up her arrogance at the beginning to frustration with her life and bitterness that disappeared as she got to know Chelsea and see beyond the movie star.

Chelsea on the other hand is lovely from the very beginning, which doesn’t mean the character doesn’t have flaws. One of the things I love about celebrity romances is when I feel like I can relate to someone whose life couldn’t be more different from mine. The “they’re people, just like us” factor. Chelsea may be a movie star, she may be rich and famous, she’s still struggling with her job, her ex, her kids.

If you enjoy romcoms and old movies—there are mentions of quite a few of my favourites—give this book a chance. It’s sweet and funny, with some unexpected twists and some more predictable ones that make it both exciting and familiar. I can see it become a comfort read over the years.

I received a copy from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is a story about Fran who’s a screenwriter trying to get a script accepted and falls back into a writing celebrity gossip columns. Chelsea Cartwright is a big time movie star with two kids who’s divorced from an alcoholic husband. She needs a PA and Fran gets the job.

I really enjoyed this book and Nan Campbell ‘s writing style, which seems very realistic and fresh. Her characters are well developed and the dialogue is fun.

If you are a celebrity fan, this book fills the bill The supporting characters added to the story and there were several hot scenes too.

It’s probably no surprise to anyone at this point that I love sapphic celebrity romances. When I saw Nan Campbell was writing one, I was thrilled. This story has the reader peeling back many layers of each MC while also getting an in depth view into Hollywood. I read this book in a day and enjoyed their story, even when they were being difficult. Would love to get Trina’s love story *cough with Lorraine cough*, and also see Woman of the Match.

Thank you to Nan, the publisher, and NetGalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.

Run of the mill but added spice: not sure about one of the main characters - Chelsea - but that’s show business for you! Good back characters made it a 5*. Recommended.

I love celebrity romances and Nan’s writing so I was excited to pick this one up. Unfortunately, my feelings are mixed about it. Good first - pacing was great, I wanted to know what happened. There were some good twists and turns that kept me reading. I liked Chelsea’s children a lot, though they seemed young. And I liked Chelsea- she seems like a genuine person. On the other hand, I couldn’t wrap my head around Fran - I think other people will like her, but she didn’t do it for me. Because of that, I had a hard time believing their chemistry and sinking all the way into the book. Nan is still an autobuy for me, if you haven’t read her other books, go get them!

Short summary: Fran is in a rut and thinks working for a celebrity could fuel the stories she writes for a gossip rag. But then she meets her employer and Chelsea is far from trashy. The more Fran works for her, the more she admires Chelsea. But what will happen when Chelsea learns the truth of Fran’s motivations, made more complicated by burgeoning feelings?

⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (3.75 stars)

This story follows Fran and Chelsea, two women whose slow-building connection grows from a quiet spark into something solid. Chelsea juggles family tension and daily pressure, while Fran steps into her life with patience and a protective streak that made her easy to love.

The characters carried the book for me. Fran and Chelsea felt warm and believable. Their chemistry stayed gentle and steady, and Fran stole my heart more than once (I love a protective character so much!). I enjoyed how the story didn’t ignore Chelsea’s family life. The stress, the responsibility and the emotional weight added a layer that made her choices much more understandable in my opinion and I also liked to see how her connection with the kids evolved over the course of this story.
The middle section lost some energy though. The conflict stretched longer than needed, and at one point it felt like Chelsea was stringing Fran along.
However, once the tension finally cleared, the story found its rhythm again.
The slow burn worked well, it kept the payoff at the end satisfying and well earned.

In the end you get a calm, balanced romance with good tension, real family dynamics and two characters who fit together. I’d recommend ♡

This is the third of Nan Campbell’s books that I’ve read, and I have liked each one a little more than the last. She is a very good technical writer, adept at crafting her characters as flawed but believable women who just want to do better, be better than who they are and something about that really speaks to me as a reader.

I also enjoyed the pacing of this book. Campbell doesn’t rush and try to cram this story into 200 pages (which seems to be a trend nowadays). By giving her characters room to breathe, it allows us time to truly understand their motivations and go on their journeys with them. By the end of the book, I found myself smiling and just so proud of both of these characters for how far they’d come. Especially Fran, who enters into the job with Chelsea with perhaps not the best intentions but we find out is really just a softy at heart.

And oh, the romance… This book is definitely a slow burn (my favorite) and the chemistry and pull between the two leads is palpable. There is an acknowledgment of feelings somewhat early on, but a good amount of angst and time is thrown in between that by the time they do get together it’s scorching hot!!

If you haven’t read any of Nan Campbell’s books yet this is a great one to start with! 4.5 stars.

Like They Do in the Movies captures the essence of a classic slow-burn romance set in the glamorous yet demanding world of celebrity life. The dynamics between Fran, a celebrity gossip writer turned personal assistant, and Chelsea, the famous actress, form the heart of the story. I went in expecting a plot revolving around Fran using her access to post awful things about Chelsea, but I was so glad this wasn't the case. Fran becomes super protective of Chelsea quickly and their connection feels authentic from the beginning.

I enjoyed the witty banter between Chelsea and Fran, as it provided both humour and depth. While some plot twists felt predictable, the narrative surprises with moments of genuine emotion and complexity. I liked the way the story navigates the perils of secrets and dishonesty, as Fran's initial portrayal evolved beautifully and showed a softer, more relatable side as she gets to know Chelsea.

Chelsea's character shines throughout, bridging the gap between her celebrity status and the audience's ability to relate to her. As a fan of the rom-com movie genre, I loved the inclusion of classic movie references - it added a nostalgic charm that complemented the romance.

For me, the latter part of the book is where this novel hit its stride. I loved the shift from Fran as Chelsea's PA to Fran as Chelsea's colleague - they were able to interact as equals and begin to build an honest relationship. Campbell's decision to allow time for healing and forgiveness adds a depth to the story that fans of celebrity romances will find both smart and satisfying. It's the delicious slow burn and the development towards an equal partnership that make this novel a captivating read.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Bold Strokes Books for a copy of this novel. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

4.5⭐
Fran went through a lot of professional disappointment and writing gossip made her dehumanize celebrities. When I started the book I was thinking: Campbell is gonna have to work hard to make me like her. My heart was quickly reassured. Despite having far from honorable first intentions, her main goal quickly shifts to protect Chelsea at all cost. And my heart always swoons for protectors. I loved how the relationship is developed: through Fran's care and protectiveness over Chelsea and through their passion for movies. Fran is both honest and supportive of Chelsea's work and talent. They helped each other find inspiration again in their professional life while also finding their way to each other. The sword of Damocles of Fran's former job being discovered and Chelsea's difficult family's life add the perfect amount of angst and depth.
I loved the last part of the book when they finally interact as equals and lay the stones of a totally honest relationship. Campbell took the time to let them heal and forgive, and it was smart. This book is definitely a delicious slow burn celebrity romance

Fran is struggling to get anyone to take a chance on her screen scripts that’s about sapphic rom coms unless she change one of her character into male so she resort to writing for a trashy gossip sites to make ends meets. She gets an opportunity to become a PA for a celebrity and decides to use this to advances but she didn’t plan on actress Chelsea being the opposite of what she thinks celebrities are entitled and selfish. Chelsea is trying to be there for her children after the divorce from their father who has a problem by taking on roles that can keep her close to home. When Chelsea needs a new to PA because she believes her last PA had betrayal her trusts she and Fran become closer to the point Chelsea tell her things she wouldn’t tell anyone but what will happens when Chelsea learn that Fran took this job under false pretenses. I enjoy the read both MCs have chemistry didn’t like Chelsea daughter you’ll find out why and even though she redeemed herself still she annoy me her brother was more wise than her.

I liked one main a lot more than the blurb had me expecting. Good start!
I'm enjoying this and I know from the blurb that one main will find out what the other used to do, but of course the opportunity to confess keeps being squandered. Even though that is a common plot turn in romances I am actually really tense about what will happen.
Things naturally go awry but I loved the plot twist solution. Yes the circumstances to the surprise reappearance were telegraphed but I am delighted that with 30% of the book still to go we are now on a second chance arc.
I enjoyed this book, I liked there wasn't an immediate connection with the daughter, that the plot played out over a decent length of book and another reason I can't quite verbalise. When I had to stop reading I was impatient to get back to it. 4.5.

(June 2024) This is my shout out to encourage readers to subscribe to author’s emails or other social media. Author’s often have their own emails that update readers about future books, appearances, signings and things the author may be involved with. It is an easy way to connect to an author you enjoy. I subscribe to Nan Campbell’s emails and in February 2024 she had a drawing for copies of this audiobook. I entered, even though I have already read and have a kindle version of the book. I was one of several selected winners and happily listened to the book. I enjoyed the audiobook version and can recommend the story in whichever format you prefer. My original review is below.

*************

(December 2023) Very pleasurable Hollywood celebrity romance. Fran Underhill is an unsold screenwriter who gets by writing clever articles for an online tabloid. She takes a chance and lands a job as a personal assistant to Hollywood actress Chelsea Cartwright. Fran hopes being on the inside of celebrity circles will work to her advantage. She isn’t expecting to like the divorced, hardworking, mother of two so much. Chelsea is easily the more likable for me of the two main characters. She loves acting but is getting the mom roles now, even though she has an Oscar. She is also very protective of her privacy and of her kids.

For added fun there are a lot of movie lines dropped into the story. Fran especially loves old movies. There is an implied age-gap but I don’t think actual ages are ever revealed. I don’t want to give spoilers but I appreciate the extra layers and texture. There is honesty in conversations and banter. Fran has career growth and new goals. Chelsea has to take her own risks and soften towards others. Campbell brings them together without an awkward power imbalance. When passion flairs the connection between Chelsea and Fran is seemingly more important than what they are physically doing. And I like that the kids are not ornamental and behave age appropriately.

On a personal note, I live forty minutes from the home of the Sundance Film Festival and have friends who volunteer there every year. I love that Campbell gets the names of the theaters correct and the smaller less famous ski resort. I hate when I can tell authors have never visited or researched a location they are writing about. If she gets the small Utah things right I trust she got the larger Southern California details correct as well.

This is an easy book to recommend. It uses familiar tropes but doesn’t feel cliche. Like They Do in the Movies is the third book from Nan Campbell and the third time I’ve given her five stars. Whatever she writes next will be on my auto read and purchase list.

How much did I love this book? So, so much. To the moon and back. So much.

You know how when you're reading a book and you love it so much that you feel sad knowing you're getting close to the end? That's what happened to me while reading Like They Do in the Movies. I want Chelsea and Fran to be real. I want them to be my friends so I can bask in their love and humor.

Okay, that might be a touch melodramatic but I really did love the characters and the story and, well, every single thing about the book.

Nan Campbell has cemented her spot on my "must read everything she publishes" list. And Like They Do in the Movies has earned its spot on my reread list.

**2/22/24 - I was lucky enough to score an audiobook from the author and dove right into it. I loved the story just as much but it took me a little bit to get used to the narrator. Don't get me wrong, she does a fantastic job of voice acting and really brought the characters to life. I think it was her actual voice that I struggled with. I don't know. I'm not sure I can put my finger on it exactly. But I'll still listen again in the future. :-)

Thanks to BSB and NetGalley for the ARC. And an even bigger thanks to Nan Campbell for writing such a wonderful book.

This was a really sweet and dynamic romance story set in Hollywood. I have a definite soft spot for celebrity romance stories so I feel like I have read many, but this story still felt unique and complex in the way it dealt with being a celebrity. It explored ideas of privacy and power within Hollywood but did so in such a genuine and down-to-earth way. It really did feel like I was reading about two real people navigating a romance amidst the complexity around them.

The first half of this book was definitely the strongest. I absolutely loved the getting to know each other stage of the story where we learnt lots about the characters individually and together. The romance in this story is definitely more slow burn, but the tension and the feelings really build right from the beginning which I loved. With Fran and Chelsea working so close together there was a lot of opportunity for sexual tension to build between them, which it definitely did.

I was much less of a fan of the middle book where the pacing seemed to be completely thrown off. The characters felt separated before they were even really together, which made this part of the book feel very slow and with little payoff. In saying that, I did love the soul searching and individual development of Fran and Chelsea at this stage of the story. Both characters really went for the dreams and had a lot of character development before they came together again under completely different circumstances. I just wish that this part of the book didn’t drag in for as long as it did with so little payoff.

Overall I think this was a super enjoyable read and a really unique take on the Hollywood romance trope. In saying that, I think the romance aspect could have been stronger towards the middle of the novel.

Amazing!

Fran loves the movies and is an avid and talented screenwriter, but no one is picking up her scripts for rom-coms about women loving women. Having found herself working for a low paying job writing celebrity gossip online, when an opportunity presents itself to work as an assistant to actress and Hollywood royalty Chelsea Cartwright it is one she can’t pass up. Chelsea loathes the celeb gossip sites and is struggling, so when Fran appears to be the answer to all her problems, it stirs up feelings she wasn’t expecting.

Loved every second of this. It had everything a celebrity based romance needs. Drama, tension, secrets, and scandal but amongst all that, Chelsea and Fran were genuinely lovely people just trying to make the best of situations and life. Fran had a lot at stake by taking the job with Chelsea and although her intentions at first probably weren’t the best idea, it only took seconds of being in Chelsea’s life for her to change her mind and make better choices, but because she’d omitted her writing for the celebrity website I worried about the fall out when that was discovered.

Fran was so resourceful and clever, really smart and brought out the best in Chelsea, even if at first Chelsea was wary of opening up to her. Instantly they had a connection that left me knowing Chelsea would probably feel supported and safe with Fran quite quickly, but when it became clear her previous assistant hadn’t had anything to do with her problems as she first thought, I enjoyed the mystery of trying to figure out why the paparazzi were still following Chelsea and her family around. There was so much packed into the story that made it exciting and so much more than a celebrity romance, and you’ll just have to read it to find out what they all were because it’d just spoil everything to share in this review.

The story really delivered, and I enjoyed every second of it from the relationship building between Chelsea and Fran, to the excitement Fran shared whenever something involved the movies. It was infectious and cute, and I can’t wait to read it again and again.

The books has two narrators.
Chelsea, a very famous actress with a fancy house and two kids. I imagine her to be a cross between someone like Gwyneth Paltrow and Reese Witherspoon.
Fran, a former journalist, who wrote gossip columns to get by, and is now Chelsea’s PA.
The inherent dynamic of a PA treating their employer in an infantilizing way is creepy to me. Sure everyone can use help, but the level of PA Fran and Lorraine (the PA Fran replaces) provide is like what a 10 year old would need.
The books consists a lot of first world problems. A lot of problems are just not that deep, but treated as that.
It’s pity the book doesn’t have more diversity.
The pacing is pretty slow, and really not that much happens.
I find Fran more palatable (but barely) than Chelsea. Although she is a feminist I don’t really understand why she loves old movies that much.
Both are skinny/slim, and that is mentioned several times which I found odd.
The fact that it has a bi and lesbian character is what has it going for this book.
Without spoiling the book, the script Fran writes, is a movie I would absolutely want to see.
It is a very low stakes book, so if that’s what you’re looking for than this is the book for you.
Maybe this genre is just not really my thing.

Well written celebrity romance with kids, agents, and exes - in both the romance and previous employee. I read it this last weekend, got lost in the story, and read until 4AM. That's later than I've read in nearly 10-years, and it got an assist from the change to daylight-savings. I was pretty startled when I saw it was 3:53AM. I couldn't, and wouldn't, have done it if the writing wasn't so smooth, reading was almost effortless, and the characters were so lovable. I will definitely be rereading this one.

I do love a good celebrity romance and this one is about as yummy as they come. Employee falls for celeb boss, lies by omission, f’s up but her heart is already lost. If that doesn’t draw you in immediately, make a doctors appointment 😉

I received an advance review copy for free from Netgalley and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Fran Underhill is a fledgling screenwriter. She loves rom coms and almost got to the stage of selling one of her scripts, if it weren’t for the fact that the studio wanted her to change her Paula and Pauline to Paula and Paul. She won’t do it. Fran wants to make a movie that she herself would have wanted to see growing up. To make ends meet she starts writing for a gossip website. She hates it, but it’s money. When she gets the chance to become a personal
assistent to Hollywood star Chelsea Cartwright, she thinks she found a sure fire way to increase her gossip posts. That is until she actually meets Chelsea…

Chelsea Cartwright’s star is firmly planted on Hollywood soil. When she discovers her assistent fed information about her whereabouts to the paparazzi, she fires her and needs to hire a new PA asap. Fran is new to the business but is the best worst option from all the available candidates. It doesn’t take long for Fran to prove her worth and her dependability. Slowly Chelsea learns that her life without Fran would be bleak as hell. Until she finds out the one thing Fran didn’t tell her about her career experience.

As I said before, you can wake me in the middle of the night with a celeb love story as good as this one. The relationship Fran and Chelsea build is so full of respect and warmth. They actually see the other exactly for who they are, with all their strengths and insecurities. These two women felt so real to me. They are fully formed, three dimensional characters. If science would let me add a fourth dimension to this description I would!

Nan Campbell’s writing style flows easily and grips you so you just have to keep turning the pages. It’s lighthearted and funny when it can be, and sensitive and vulnerable the next moment. Let’s just say I will be doing a double take whenever I see a pizza delivery person on a scooter for the foreseeable future.

I loved the way Chelsea just can’t seem to stop herself from loving Fran, even though it takes a while for her to admit it. Fran on the other hand never hid her growing feelings, but instead of pushing she allowed Chelsea to get there in her own time. Then when they finally get together, whoa boy, it’s sizzling off the page!

The relationship between Chelsea and her kids and the struggles she faces with her addict ex-husband feel so real, you just want to hold your arms out and give her a hug. I love it when celebrities get to be actual humans. There is even a tiny bit of a whodunnit woven into the story.

Of course it’s a romance trope, of course there is a HEA, but Campbell absolutely nailed this one. What more can I say? It’s just freaking good! And, now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to dive right back in for a re-read.

I knew when Nan Campbell’s debut novel, The Rules of Forever, was chosen for a Lambda Literary Award, she would be one to watch. Three books later, that theory still holds true. Her talent continues to drive her to the top and make her a fast favorite among sapphic romance readers. Her newest book is a testament to that.

Like They Do in the Movies’s storyline involves an often-used trope—a celebrity falling in love with a non-celebrity. Sapphic romance readers seem to enjoy this trope because it provides a glimpse into the glamorous and often mysterious world of Hollywood. Their themes of fame and fortune provide readers with a place to enjoy the challenges of navigating a relationship that circles the public eye and the media. The interplay between the characters’ public and private personas also supplies built-in conflict for the narrative. This conflict ultimately paves the way to exposing vulnerabilities, increasing the emotional depth of the story. It’s pure escapism, and Campbell understands how to capitalize on it big time, enabling her to deliver something special for her readers.

Like They Do in the Movies is a romance that needs to be savored, though. It’s a slow burn, and Campbell uses the pace effectively, letting the romance between Chelsea and Fran unfold organically. Using time and space, she gradually builds the anticipation, tension, and chemistry. This is smart writing, especially considering the trope. Portraying the relationship in an unhurried manner fosters a deeper connection between the characters, ultimately making the romance feel more authentic. What’s more, it paves the way for reader investment, inviting readers to care about Chelsea and Fran. When the end comes, the resolution resonates in a satisfying and meaningful way.

With the completion of book three, it’s clear that Campbell is a skilled writer. It appears she works hard to hone her craft and make each book better than the last. Her research is strong, and her use of literary devices is on the money. As far as Like They Do in the Movies goes, it’s the secondary characters that nudge readers’ attention. Helen, Petal, and Lorraine subtly stir growth within Chelsea and Fran, making their change appear genuine. When all is said and done, these creative decisions benefit not only the development of the characters but the overall story.

Final remarks…

Like They Do in the Movies is a real treat for fans of celebrity romances. It contains all the necessary elements that make it entertaining—fame, glamour, media intrusion, and undeniable chemistry. This romance resonates; it’s skillfully written, immersive and sure to delight. If you’re a fan of Tinseltown romances, it needs to be on your reading list.

Strengths…

Well-written, compelling narrative
Well-scripted dialogue
Well-constructed, likable characters
Immersive, entertaining story world
Original twist on an old trope
A 4.5 star book

Not entirely sure what makes a book stick with me. Secret sauce undetermined. But I can say this one had it. The characters? The sweetness? The drama? I just don't know. But I know this one hit all the right marks for me. I do love me a good celeb romance, so this one already had advantage at the gate, but I really can't say what makes it so endearing to me. I just loved it. Also, the narration by Lula Larkin was really up my alley. I would recommend as a feel good. I would recommend as a really sweet celeb romance. I just recommend because I loved it.

Like they do in the Movies is a fantastic and swoon-worthy novel. I love celebrity romances... I love them even more when the premise focuses on the disgruntled employee who wants to write dirt (gossip journalism) on the boss but then turns out to fall in love with her.

This book was fantastic in the sense that it took a well worn trope and gave it a little pizzaz. Enough to where I was glued from the first page. I loved to see how Fran's dreams of fame and fortune clashed with the harsh reality of celebrity culture, and Hollywood in general!

Fran is such a genuine character and I found myself totally on her side from the beginning... Yes! Let's take down Hollywood from the inside. If we hurt Chelsea Cartwright, so be it. But Chelsea won my heart by being this genuine and loving character. Their interactions at the beginning of the book were so awkward and yet so sincere! Swoon! That's all I can say.

Also, can we talk about Nan's writing for a second? Her writing is a breath of fresh air, offering readers a realistic and immersive experience. The characters are well-developed, and the dialogue crackles with wit, adding layers to the narrative. Fran's internal conflict is palpable, and the chemistry between her and Chelsea is electric, setting the stage for a complex and forbidden romance. She captures the reader in a way that literally envelops your senses and makes you forget for a second that you're reading a novel.

The banter between characters is a standout element, creating moments of humor and tension that keep the pages turning. The book effortlessly balances the allure of celebrity romance with genuine emotional depth, making it a captivating read.

Like They Do in the Movies transcends expectations, delivering a nuanced exploration of the highs and lows of Hollywood. I absolutely loved Like They Do In The Movies. This celebrity, age gap, boss/personal assistant novel was funny, emotional, and hot all rolled into one.

Fran is a lesbian screenwriter who keeps being looked over because she won't change the script from Paula to Paul. She writes gossip articles on the side to get cash so she can pay her monthly rent. When there is an opportunity to apply for a job as a personal assistant to a major celebrity, she jumps at the chance as it's a way to find out some juicy goss to get a bigger payout for her writing.

However, things don't go to plan when the big hot celebrity turns out to be Chelsea Cartwright, a queer icon to Fran from her college days. Chelsea is going through a divorce, and the paparazzi are harassing her left right, and center, which makes Fran both protective and guilty for even thinking about using this time as her PA to get dirt on her.

Of course, close proximity, learning more about each other, and hilarious situations make it hard for these two women not to start falling for each other.

I loved the way this book was written. It was like an extra-long prologue with the first half, and the second half all about second-chance love. It made it more emotional to know how much sexual tension there was between the two and everything that happened afterwards was so much more special.

I loved the characters, the acting scenes, and the screenwriting. I loved the dialogue between all the characters, and the truths that were said to each other to make sense of situations were heartwarming.

I absolutely would watch the movie Fran wrote, or just read it. Make it happen, Nan. Haha
