This boxed set of the popular fiction books for girls includes books 5-8 of the Millie's Steadfast Love (Book 5), Millie's Grand Adventure (Book 6), Millie's Reluctant Sacrifice (Book 7), and Millie's Fiery Trial (Book 8).
Martha Finley was a teacher and author of numerous works, the most well known being the 28 volume Elsie Dinsmore series which was published over a span of 38 years. Finley wrote many of her books under the pseudonym Martha Farquharson.
They are as good as the four before them, but a little bit heavier on the subject material, especially in the last two. Books 5 and 6 deal with Millie and Charles Landreth, a young man that she would love to marry, but he is not a Christian so she can't. In books 7 and 8, she goes to Bolivia to do mission work and assist in opening a clinic. But she's not entirely welcome. There is a witch there who wants to scare her away, but Millie has to stand her ground. I wish that they had written more Millie books to coincide with Martha Finley's original stories, but the books end at a pretty good time, and also leaves the rest of Millie's life to your imagination, unless of course you want to read the old Martha Finley books that go well beyond where these left off. Overall, they get five stars and Millie stays my favorite ALOF girl.
I like these books, but wish that Millie would've stayed in Pleasant plains. I absolutely love the first two books, but usually skip the next three when I read the series.
I SO WISH that these books had been around when I was in junior high! These are Christian historical fiction. I thoroughly enjoyed them and grew in my faith from them -- and I read them as an adult! My mom read them, too, and she and I had so many great discussions. They influenced my current work as a writer of Sunday school curriculum for kids.
