Catching Lizzy

Rate this book
Lizzy Bennet is a hot mess. She’s about to marry a man she doesn’t love, and she’s sporting a case of cold feet so severe her toes are surely blue. Between her mother’s arrangements, her ridiculous gown, and her stick-in-the-mud fiancé’s compulsive personality traits, she simply can’t go through with the disaster awaiting her. With the help of her best friend, she can stay at Will Darcy’s for the holidays, but to say Will’s good looking is an understatement! She just ran out on her wedding, the last thing she needs is man, but how is she supposed to resist the dark-haired hottie in Clark Kent glasses? Not to mention watching him interact with his daughter only adds fuel to the fire. Oh, holy heck! She’s about to endure the longest Christmas ever!

Will Darcy leads a quiet life with his daughter and housekeeper. He doesn’t need a wife or a girlfriend disturbing his peace and upending little Georgie’s holidays, so when his cousin brings Lizzy Bennet to Will’s house to hide from her crazy family, he balks. He will not suffer through another one of his cousin’s maniacal matchmaking plots! But Lizzy is… Could his cousin have finally gotten something right? No, that can’t be. Something has to be wrong with her, doesn’t it? But for the life of him, Will can’t find a single objection—and he’s tried! What’s he supposed to do if she’s living in his house for the holidays, eating at his kitchen table, and lounging on his sofa? She’s either going to make him lose his mind or his heart. But which is worse?

Amazon best selling author L. L. Diamond is more commonly known as Leslie to her friends, and Mom to her three kids. Aside from mother and writer, Leslie considers herself a perpetual student. She has degrees in biology and studio art, but will devour any subject of interest simply for the knowledge. As an artist, her concentration is in graphic design, but watercolor is her medium of choice with one of her watercolors featured on the cover of her second book, A Matter of Chance. She is a member of the Jane Austen Society of North America. She also plays flute and piano, but much like Elizabeth Bennet, she is always in need of practice!

A Modern Seasonal P&P Novella
Oh, I loved this! ‘Tis the season for Christmas-themed Pride and Prejudice storylines and this one is a joy to read. In this modern variation, Lizzy becomes a runaway bride by escaping out a church window with help from her best friend, Richard. To hide her away from her overbearing mother, he takes her to Will Darcy’s house for temporary refuge. They have never met before.

L.L. Diamond has once again treated her readers to a delightfully feel-good story, that starts out with a hilarious situation followed by an unforgettable introduction. The story is funny, romantic, steamy, and sentimental. I got teary a couple of times, but only in joyous kind of way.

Highly recommend this quick seasonal variation.

Mature/steamy content.

Run… Lizzy… run!

SPOILER ALERT: This review may contain *** SPOILERS ***

>>Rating: MATURE: No kidding: language, graphic sex scenes, mention of m/m love, sex, cursing, the usual.
>>Angst Level: no real danger except keeping one step ahead of Mrs. Bennet. That was the only real threat to our heroin.
>>Health Alert: Do not eat or drink while reading parts of this story. I laughed so hard I nearly snorted my Mt. Dew. Ouch! What a scream.
>>Source: Borrowed from KU [12-8-23]: A quick read at 162 pages. I first read excerpts on the Austin Variations website and had to read it. I’ve mentioned several times that I am not a fan of modern JAFF stories. However, Diamond keeps writing these fantastic modern stories that just draw me in. What can you do?

“After all, if you run far enough, no one can catch you.” –V.E. Schwab, A Gathering of Shadows

The story opens with a runaway bride. Yeah, Lizzy was climbing out the church window to escape a fate worse than death. Her best friend [Richard] was helping her evade Mrs. Bennet as he whisked her away to parts unknown. That was hilarious. I adored all the characters, especially the young child, Georgie. Children always steal the show, especially at Christmas. This would be a Christmas to remember for all of the characters. I loved it. Even though I don’t care for modern stories. The mature rating was due to modern cursing and sex scenes that were explicit.

This modern variation is definitely for mature audiences.

We start out with Lizzy preparing to marry "Bill"...against her own better judgement. However Faith Bennet, her mother, just loves the guy. Then the day of the wedding Lizzy finds her mother has swapped wedding dresses behind her back and she now finds herself imprisoned in a monstrosity of lace. THAT is the straw that broke the camel's back, as they say. (So, she escapes the ordeal.)

Lizzy's best friend, Richard Fitzwilliam, helps her in her escape by finding a place for her to hide...with his cousin, Will Darcy. Will is a widower with a three-year-old daughter, Georgie. The fact that Georgie bonds quickly with Lizzy helps a lot with their attraction for each other.

This story has much to do with both quickly falling passionately in love. We also learn a bit about how Lizzy has rebelled against her mother most of her life with her schooling and her profession.

I enjoyed this story and recommend it.

Review:
Fun read. However, deducted half a star due to narration. I would have enjoyed more had I read rather than listened (e.g., exaggerated voice of Richard threw off his character's comedic timing).

This is a modern romantic low to no angst Christmas story featuring a cute toddler and kittens! Lizzy Bennet is a runaway bride who is rescued by her best friend, Richard Fitzwilliam. He takes her to his cousin’s house to hide out. She meets Will Darcy and the story evolves from there!

I always love this author’s characters and this book delivers again. I loved Lizzy!

So Wonderful!!!

I am not usually a fan of variations set outside of the recency era, but this is truly captivating. It's wit and humor are amazingly spot on. I often laughed out loud as I read this no angst delight.

I'm not usually a fan of modern variations, but this one was a good, fun read with a nice Christmas touch. Nice alternate use of Canon character names. Odc meet and fall in love (& into bed) quickly with no evil twists. Nice romance.

Modern day Pride and Prejiudice retelling with plenty of humor and entertainment

Really fun! Modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice's Darcy and Elizabeth. I never tire of reading about them in my continued quest to enjoy following Jane Austen's wonderful characters in different scenarios and time periods.

Lizzy was a surprise - talented and modest- and very funny! Darcy was hot and very caring, though initially bit of a prude. Richard Fitzwilliam, Lizzy's lifelong friend was also a surprise, a loyal friend and supporter. Imagining P&P in the modern era can be tricky, but the author blended them into the story in a way that was mostly believable.

I wish the book had been longer. I really wanted to read more about their life before and after marriage. The first person POV of the main characters made the story more relatable and was well done. Definitely, it is a book for mature readers given some explicit scenes.

Thanks for writing this book for our enjoyment. Please keep writing!

Lizzy is Caught

This is a fun modern Pride and Prejudice novella! This meeting is so different than in canon and laugh out loud funny. It is so unexpected. Richard is such a hoot.

I really enjoyed this quick read with a cup of hot tea. I encourage others to give it a try.

There are love scenes, so those who do not like to read about them may need to give this story a pass.

Super cute story.
Though I’ve always enjoyed L.L. Diamond books, this reads like a college assignment, with lots of awkward word choices, and editing problems, and the flow was off.

I just noticed she wrote this in 2023! I’m shocked, it just doesn’t seem up to her usual standards.

a wonderful modern day P&P variation

What a lovely and humorous novel. I love that Elizabeth was best friends with Richard and his family loved Elizabeth. And Richard had known all along that his cousin, William, was perfect for Elizabeth. Getting there was perfect fun!

I loved it!

I'm gonna be honest with you, it's not my favorite Modern Jaff from this year, but definitely in the Top 5 I would say.
I'm a sucker for cheesy rom-com's with such tropes (Runaway Bride with Julia Roberts comes to my mind) so of course I was intrigued by the premise. Ms Diamond didn't disappointed me in the least!

Summary; It's Lizzy's wedding day, and she just can't marry Bill, so what is she doing? Climbing out of a window in her wedding dress (funny scene dear reader!). She gets help from her best friend Richard Fitzwilliam and eventually ending up at Will Darcy's place. From there on ODC's love story is developing and some scenes are so heartwarming. Lizzy with Georgie (his 3 year old daughter). She's such a dear girl! There are kittens too :-D Who doesn't love pets in a story?
All in all it's a light hearted and funny Novella

I do however have one thing; I would've liked to know what 'became' of Faith Bennet aka Mrs. Bennet. Her thoughts on certain events maybe and so on.

-Quick Read (145 Pages)
-No Angst
-A little of steamy content after the first half of the book, but not really explicit.

Moments before tying the final knot with a man her mother favours but she does not love, Lizzy Bennet flees her own wedding. Her best friend Richard hides her at his cousin's house for the holiday. There is only one problem: Richard's cousin Will is entirely too hot for his own good. She has just escaped a wedding … she now can't fall in love with this man.
Will lives a quiet life with his daughter, he surely needs no woman at his side. Especially not when his cousin brings her to his home in what seems to be another of his matchmaking attempts. But Will is thoroughly attracted to Lizzy. Could it be that his cousin finally got something right.
Will Elizabeth find the courage to interact with a man so soon after she flew from her wedding? Will Darcy let Elizabeth in his heart after years of being a single dad? And what does his little daughter think about it?

The story was very well written by the author LL Diamond. I always like her stories very much and I enjoyed this one very much. It's a modern variation that takes place around the Christmas holidays. The story is not overly long (164 p. / 4 h 0 min) and is therefore perfect for the busy time before Christmas.
The story is written in the first person narrative from various points of views, but mostly from Will and Lizzy’s.

The characters were masterfully put in this modern story. You recognize their original characters but at the same time they are new people who fit in this, their own story, in a natural way. It was very well done by the author.

I really liked the development of the relationship between Lizzy and Will. There was not much drama, it was only two people who are attracted to one another and who realize by spending time together that they love each other and want to spend the rest of their lives together. Sometimes it is that simple ;-) … I liked the chemistry they have with one another. It was beautifully written how the sparks between them fly and how they are secretly watching each other.

I love Richard and Georgie. Richard is such a good and loyal friend to Lizzy and he equally looks after his cousin in a caring way. He is definitely the sort of best friend one might hope for oneself.
Georgie is adorable in this story. She is so cute in her interactions with everyone and I like the way she accepts Lizzy with open arms in her family.

What was very well done was, in my opinion, the setting of the story (forced proximity around the holidays). This gives Will and Lizzy the chance to get to know each other very well in a short time. Therefore one also can explain why they rush to the altar when it is not as required to be together today as it was in regency time.

Besides Mrs Bennet who wants to see her daughter settled with a man she does not like or love, there are no villains in the story. That is really a balm because, in my opinion, a Christmas story does not naturally need many villains.

The story was narrated by Scarlett Mae Clarke. At the beginning I thought I would not like her narration because she speaks with an American accent. Maybe it was only because the first person speaking was Mrs Bennet. Later I enjoyed Scarlett Mae Clarke's narration very much and found it fitting for this audiobook.

If you like to know if fleeing from her own wedding will lead to happiness for Lizzy you should definitely listen to this excellent audiobook.

I highly recommend it

Wonderful

Light, sweet, sexy, and romantic. The story begins with Elizabeth being a runaway bride, deciding at the 11th hour to escape a marriage she doesn't want, that she only agreed to in order to satisfy her mother. Her best friend Richard Fitzwilliam helps her escape, and takes her to his cousin Will Darcy's place, as no one will think to look for her there. Will is sceptical at first, but his three year old daughter Georgie loves Elizabeth almost immediately, and soon Darcy does, too.

This is a lovely modern take on P&P. I like Lizzy's career, and I love the character of Richard. This author is a master of humor and light, clever banter. The sexy parts are well done, sweet and not too graphic. A few of the accessory characters from P&P are included in clever ways. I deducted a star for the ludicrous nature of the opening premise. Elizabeth getting married to a stuffed shirt Bill Collins, all in a bid to win some love and acceptance from her mother, made Elizabeth seem pretty pathetic to me, and it didn't at all fit in with her subsequent persona, as a wonderful and successful woman. I just wished the story hadn't begun that way.

However, the book is well written and well edited. I recommend it highly for a wonderfully romantic and fun way to pass some time.

A very romantic Christmas story in a modern setting.
Richard Fitzwilliam is Lizzy best friend and he rescues Lizzy from a disastrous wedding. Lizzy is very out of character in the beginning, having been bullied by her mother into a relationship with Mr Collins. So luckily she leaves him at the altar and she and Richard escapes to Will Darcy house. Lizzie gets too drunk and start by throwing up at Will’s feet. Will is a widower with a cute little daughter Georgie and a warm and welcoming housekeeper Mrs R.
Despite the disastrous first meeting Lizzie and Wills chemistry is off the charts. So be prepared for a very romantic Christmas holiday and New Year’s party

Really funny

I can honestly say I enjoyed this book. I laughed very loudly when Lizzy was trying to escape from her wedding, and Richard was trying to help her get out of that monstrosity of a wedding gown. It got 4 stars from me, instead of 5 because I had a great need to know what she birthed, (boy or girl), and also how her ex turned out. Did he get married and how did that marriage work. He sounded like a stick in the mud.

I enjoyed this! It was a good modern version of P&P. I haven’t read many modern versions as I never really like the sound of them and it never seems to really work for me when moved into modern times, however, I did enjoy this one. It was very low angst, I loved the Richard fitzwilliam character and his interactions with everyone. I liked how some of the other characters were part of it. It was fairly amusing in places and a light and fluffy easy read. Darcy and Lizzie had enough of a genuine Darcy and Lizzie feel about them that i wasn’t put off by them being totally different.

I loved this short, fun, modern, steaming read of my favorite couple, Lizzy and Will Darcy. This is the latest novel from one of my favorite JAFF authors, L.L. Diamond. Ms. Diamond's modern stories are so true to the times now and I enjoy how she keeps certain aspects of both Lizzy and Will Darcy's personalities true to original Pride and Prejudice characters. Another winner from L.L. Diamond.

DNF

I didn’t read far but I was immediately put off by two things - the mentioning of Scarlett O’Hara & the civil war and that the reasons for disliking Bill were traits of autism and/or OCD. I now recall that I had been concerned at the portrayal of BIPOC characters in this author’s previous work - I gave them the benefit of the doubt that time, but I am not willing to do so again.

I’ll give it a 3.5 stars. It was a very quick read. Other reviews mention mature scenes, but I feel like they were B rated. Everything was very very rushed. I definitely liked the idea of this variation, but I wouldn’t have minded a little more between Lizzy and Will getting to know each other or the other Bennet family members.
