The Contemplative Heart

Rate this book
James Finley recognizes the depth and range of today's spiritual yearning and refuses to settle for anything but its most profound possibilities. He opens our everyday living to the contemplative traditions, practices, and teaching that have been traditionally the preserve of the monk, and he does so without diluting them. The Contemplative Heart, enables readers to realize that wherever we live, whatever we do, the richest possibilities of a contemplative life are within our reach-that they are in fact what we have been searching for all along.

Finley's language is sublime when describing elements of contemplative living. He is so insightful, and threaded throughout is a sweetness and a little humor that helps to keep one balanced. Really, the most helpful contemporary book I have read on the subject.

This book's about the kind of heart I have. My heart helps me to be peaceful. We all need peace like mine. I'd share my peace with the whole world if I could.

On the cusp of 5 star. Made me cry, but not in a bad way, many times.

3.5. Tough read. I will probably read it again in order to come to fuller appreciation.

A difficult but excellent read on contemplative prayer. This is a book that I will need to read over multiple times to fully absorb. I met the author recently when I attended some talks that he gave on Jesus, Buddha and St. Teresa of Avila. I can't say enough good things about James Finley. He is authentic and walks his talk.

I was disappointed in this book. Finley seems to write over his head and in words that do not tell you anything. The book is really of meditation and not contemplation. There were a few bits of helpful information but generally it was a waste of time reading.

Finley's book on Merton, Palace of Nowhere, is marvelous. I have high hopes for this...

Good taste of Christian Eastern meditation/contemplation and Thomas Merton.
