The Whitby Trap

Rate this book
It is 2022. Derek is drowning in the dreary routine of his job, his love life, his friends, everything … and a weekend break in a Whitby cottage is just another reason to get drunk.

Waking up on a whaling ship in a snowstorm, with a hangover the size of Yorkshire, is a bit of a jolt.

While Derek is lost on the Jurassic Coast, his friends – Amy and Sarah – are desperately seeking him in the early 19th century. Even the simplest things are a struggle in a town where people work twenty hours a day to survive. And Amy has a secret she daren't tell Sarah. With betrayals, double-dealing, wild experiments, piracy, love and loss for company, the strange duckfoot pistol in the hands of the eccentric snuff-snorting sleuth who breaks into their lodgings is the least of the women’s problems.

What exactly is happening beneath the old town hall, and is there any way back?

“𝘗𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘯 meets 𝘑𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘤 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘬 meets 𝘉𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦. I love it!”

"Exciting, thought-provoking, weird and intense in all the best ways."

It is a pretty good idea for a plot, and I could imagine it being used as a TV movie/serial.

That said, I did struggle with it for the first few chapters, but it got better the further I read, although spoiled by quite a few typos. Sadly, perhaps this should be expected these days from a small (local?) publisher. It could probably be improved by someone with more resources?

I bought it in a Whitby independent bookshop on a bit of a whim, which is unusual for me. I was hopeful to read about Whitby and its history, and I wasn’t disappointed, as it was clearly quite well researched. Worth reading 😃

DNF @ 58%.
could put myself through anymore of this shit. tried but just couldn't do it. it was poorly written, and the storyline was just lacking in every department. I absolutely love whitby and bought this while there thinking it would be an interesting read. how wrong can 1 person be. if you see this book anywhere and are curious about it, honestly, either keep your money or spend it on something else because this one is an absolute waste of time, effort, and money. utter rubbish.

Absolutely Brilliant. Rich Vibrant Characters in an amazing old Fishing Port that I love & know fairly well so that also helped, plus this was different as it's set between three time zones which could be confusing to some at first but eventually makes complete sense, but which makes the book rich with History too, I will be highly recommending this Book & my granddaughter is eagerly awaiting to start reading it. #Amazon.co.uk, #FB, #Instagram
