She’s alive. Tortured and injured–but alive.

And from the moment I scent her, I am certain she’s my mate.

She cowers in fear when she sees me, yet I will stop at nothing to protect her.

And now that I have a reason to live…a whole lot of people are going to die.

This was hot.
I didn’t really love, or even really like, the FMC at the beginning, but it ended up being very sweet.

It’s so fucking weird being so afraid of spiders irl, while simultaneously finding them super hot in monster smut…my brain is full of wonderful contradictions.🤷🏻‍♀️

2.5🌶️

Guarded by the Spider by Cassie Alexander is Book 3 in the interconnected but definitely standalone-able Monster Security Agency series. After being pleasantly surprised by my reading experience with Guarded by the Snake by Layla Fae of the same series (Book 2), I wanted to continue with it, even though spiders are decidedly... not my thing.

While the writing wasn't terrible by any means, and the spidery-ness didn't overpower my emotions as much as I thought it would, I was actually more put off by how fast the romance progressed between the MCs, a kidnapped human female and the spider monster bodyguard sent to retrieve her. Because the MMC immediately recognizes the FMC as his fated mate, he acts almost in love with her from the very start, calling her "my love" and the FMC feels this connection in the form of overwhelming horniness, particularly for her spider monster bodyguard. So because of these two elements the romance was rushed and went from 0 to 100, which unfortunately made the story lose a lot of its intrigue and tension.

Not bad, but not as good as Book 2. I'm still intrigued by the series and love my monsters so will be checking out the other works in the series too.

🌶️ Spicy take: And kudos for double penetration, or should I say, dual penetration? Normally I hate big spiders😏

The Hero: Nia’n’an (a.k.a. Nine) - he is an arachnea (spider monster) and works for the Monster Security Agency. Though he retired and plans to just die in peace in his apartment. His kind tend to die of loneliness if they live past a certain age without finding a mate, and he knows his time is coming. When all the sudden, his boss knocks on the door. They have a ten-million-dollar job to rescue the daughter of a very rich man who was kidnapped and is being held in a place where Nine is the only monster who can access safely.

The heroine: Sloane - she was the dyslexic daughter of a super-genius and one of the richest men in the world. She originally had plans and goals for her life, but she ended up being a wealthy singer and party girl and a disappointment as the only heir of her father. When she is out having a concert with friends and fans, she is kidnapped and witnesses the murder of her friends. She feels it is all her fault for being who she is. She is taken hostage deep into the forest for days and overhears her captors get angry when her father refuses to pay the ransom twice.

The Story: When Nine finds Sloane, he knows immediately that she is his mate. Though his death was still close, he had to fully mate with his woman before he died. Nine and Sloane had to go through quite a journey to get her back to civilization. He found her in the Threadstone mountains which are full of all kinds of vicious monsters. Sloane had a broken ankle and couldn’t walk, so Nine had to protect her and carry her out.

Like the other books of this series I have read, you have to put your gross factor out of your mind a bit to read this one. I like alien romance because the aliens are mainly humanoid, though usually different colors, and some with tails and/or horns, but you can easily picture them as very human-like. As with much monster romance, unless they are shifters, which they aren’t in this series, the monsters are often as much like their snake, spider, or whatever counterparts as they are humanoid. They have humanoid upper bodies, and sometimes weird facial features, like slits for ears instead of human-like ears, different tongues and such. Though like in this book, his lower body was so spider-like with eight legs. I have to admit, that like in Guarded by the Snake, I liked the fact that the monster “packages” were not always humanoid. It certainly made the intimate scenes fun.

Even though monsters are well known and integrated into society in this series, there isn’t that much species commingling going on in the world. So, Sloane has a reaction to Nine like you would expect when they first meet. She is like ewww, yuk, when she gets close to his spider legs. I was a bit surprised at how fast she overcame it though. I know it helps that he was protecting her and basically carrying her, but she starts to want him a lot sooner than I would expect. Especially considering that his translator device broke, so she couldn’t understand him. Luckily, he could understand her, and the fact that she didn’t know he could understand her made things kind of funny at times.

This audiobook was done in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Jonathon Lake and Avery Caris. They did a fantastic job. Jonathon Lake has a deep voice that worked very well for the spider monster. Avery Caris has a youthful sounding voice that was perfect for Sloane. She is very expressive, and I really enjoyed the narration, and the story was very good. I wish more of this series was available on Audiobook.

It was a beautiful story, I really enjoyed it, although, I was upset by the main female character at the beginning because she was mean to Nine, but over time she grew on me. I was kind of saddened that at first she was mean to him, but, little by little, she started falling in love with him, and I started loving that relationship.

Spicy Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

If you're expecting a literary masterpiece in a book whose title is "Guarded by a Spider", you're pretty deluded. But if you want something "fun" with a few legs or two... or eight... This will be a great pick!

𝙎𝙮𝙣𝙤𝙥𝙨𝙞𝙨:
This is a Dual POV that follows Nia’n’an and Sloane. Sloane has been kidnapped by some mysterious organization and is presumed dead. Nia’n’an believes he's going to die because he hasn't found his mate; so as a last-ditch effort to return to the home of his ancestors while still seeing if he can be useful, he is hired by the Monster Bodyguard Company to retrieve Sloane's body.
However, when he gets close to where she's being kept, he smells his mate. It turns out that his mate is none other than this human Sloane and she is very much alive.

𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙁𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨:
I haven't read many monster romances. So, I'm not sure if this is exactly what to expect in a monster romance or if it's just what I have previously seen in like the only other monster romance I have read. Basically, once Nia’n’an finds his mate, his intelligence seems to disappear and he is lowered down to the basic primal needs of:
- She is now my love.
- I love her.
- I protect her.
- I make her happy.
- And I need to procreate with her and make her my mate.
Basically, he goes full cavemanspider on her...

I think what I liked about Sloane and the dynamic between the two is that Sloane has the mouth of a sailor and she's fucking petrified of this spider creature who has come to save her. But the two of them develop this cute little way of communicating and the two form a sweet little unusual friendship. BUT she also feels the effects of the mate bond, SO IS incredibly horny so the only release is humping a spider with two penises for some gratification. I love that Sloane was feisty and almost snappy and just babbled whatever she was thinking. It was also cute and sweet how caring and generous Nia’n’an was because all he wanted to do was take care of her.

This is not a very complex story. There are a lot of questions that I have unanswered that just get brushed past and I'm not sure if it's just because the world is already established, that they are not touched on... or if it's just the way this story is...

It is NEVER EXPLAINED:
Don't read these if you care about spoilers

It felt like Cassie Alexander left so many things open-ended and it didn't sit well for me. It was almost like she wanted to tell a story of a woman who has slight Stockholm syndrome and develops attraction to a Spiderman. They have kinky sex that at times I was moving my head "confused puppy style" to figure out how it happened. Like I still don't know how logistically they coupled together. I just accepted that they "came together" in some way and did things...

𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙨 and 𝙈𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤 𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙨:
▶ Dual POV
▶ Forced Proximity
▶ Monster Romance
▶ Tending to Injuries
▶ Dressing Help - HE MAKES HER CLOTHING
▶ Bodyguard Romance
▶ Mine
▶ Fated Mates
▶ Instalust and Instalove
▶ More
▶ DVP and DP (He has two of them)
▶ Virgin MMC

Overall if you are looking for a quick monster read that seems to be what Monster Romances are like (at least the one other I have read), I think this is going to give you exactly the relief to that itch you want to scratch.

While I enjoyed the story and the mmc I really wasn't a fan of the fmc.
She went from terrified of the giant spider man to wanting to jump his bones without any kind of character development. All of that while not understanding a word he said?
While Nine knew she was his mate, her falling in love with him in a matter of days wasn't believable imo.
I loved the spice and I found it very creative since he's a spider. I would have liked it better if Sloane was different though.

I'll give this a 3.5 stars anyway. It was a quick read and I had fun.

“In a world so unlike, two hearts beat as one”

This follows Nia’n’an an Arachnid who feels the end is near but the Monster Security Agency was informed that Sloane Marlow was kidnapped. This rescue mission to the mountains is dangerous and he will be going alone… can he save her? Or is there a more fated destiny?

This was way too much fun and a pallet cleanser I needed. We have a little plot but a delicious amount of spice. Nia’n’an has never found his fated mate. He is protective and possessive of her. Sloan is a sassy brat who comes from money and very abrupt and knows what she wants. There is a bit of a language barrier in this. I laughed, I had a good time and the spice had me screaming. Just have fun with it.

This was fun... but if you're scared of spiders... this is NOT for you.

I loved the hero. He was so great. He thought he was going to die so is convinced to go on a potential suicide mission.

The heroine was not hugely likeable, but she grew on me. She was pretty freaked out in the beginning by the hero (I mean, he is a giant spider). I liked how their friendship progressed. There's a joke that he's kind of like Little Mermaid because much of the book is without him speaking in a language she can understand.

They're both getting horny and escaping villains together. So, don't expect a deep love story.

I actually would have loved to get more of her story as she changes after this trauma. Before her kidnapping, she's sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll. After... I guess spider sex? But it feels like she's probably making changes that we don't see.

Safety deets
- He's a virgin... she's been around the block quite a few times.
- No OW/OM.
- We get to see them in their HEA at the end.
- LOTS of webs and spider 💦

Sometimes the author’s way of describing things was pretty confusing. Like when she describes appearances or situations. I felt like I had to SEE it to really understand what was happening, which is tough for someone like me who likes to picture the whole thing in my head like a movie 😆. Thankfully i didn’t feel like that happened too much to take away from my enjoyment much though.

I really loved the audiobook too 🥰. Loved the narrators voices. Avery Caris is so nostalgic to me after listening to the Brutes of Bristlebrook series 🤭😏.

Oh yeah, I also didn’t like the ending. It felt incomplete and I wanted morreeee ☹️😆.

I was fully expecting to DNF this book (because spiders— yurlhkch!), but it ended up being a pleasant surprise!?

The MMC is a spider bodyguard who is getting ready to die because he has not found his mate, and goes on one last suicide mission to rescue a billionaire’s kidnapped daughter (the FMC).

I felt bad for the MMC because he spent a lot of time pining while trying to keep the FMC safe (and making her cute sweaters! 😍), and she was fearful and *so mean* to him… but he’s literally a giant spider so I also couldn’t blame her lol. They were cute together at the end though.

I really enjoyed the general storyline and how useful the spiderwebs were, but although the sex scenes were probably hot I could not get past how spider-y the MMC was. YMMV!

tropes: non-human MMC, human FMC, virgin MMC, fated mates, double 🍆, DP, DVP

3.5 stars rounded up.

I did enjoy this book - it was a good sci-fi *real* alien romance. There were just a few things I didn’t enjoy. Mostly the FMC. She was kind of annoying. Her behavior was true to her character’s back story - spoiled. The spice was decent but I hated the fmc’s dirty talk. Their first scene together was DP because yay, the MMC has two 🍆🍆.

“𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐦𝐞. 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝.

“𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭?” 𝐈 𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐝, 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐚 𝐡𝐚𝐳𝐲-𝐞𝐲𝐞𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤. 𝐈 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐮𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐣𝐚𝐰, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐫𝐚𝐩 𝐦𝐲 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭. “𝑭𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒕, 𝐍𝐢𝐚’𝐧’𝐚𝐧. 𝐘𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐮𝐩 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐞,” 𝐈 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐡𝐢𝐦. “𝐍𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐧’𝐬 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞. 𝐌𝐦𝐦𝐦. 𝐅𝐮𝐜𝐤.”

The fact that she says, “Feel that shit,” totally took me out of the scene because it’s DP and now I’m thinking about him actually feeling shit, lol. I know it’s supposed to be dirty talk but it’s making it feel actually dirty 😅

The MMC was a virgin, very cinnamon roll, and hopelessly in love with the FMC.

When I first read in some other reviews that this story was 'weird', I thought that was a strange thing in itself to say because...yeah, it's an alien-human romance involving a giant spider--what do you expect if not something weird?

But, once I read further and further into this...yeah, that kind of became my consensus as well.

It's...hard to describe just what makes this 'weird', per se; so, instead, I'll focus on what I believe is a weak point: namely, the romance.

On the hero's side (yeah, not going to attempt to remember how to spell his name), for him it's insta-love because he scents that Sloane's his mate, so for him I'm pegging it down to that, because...

...as soon as we meet Sloan, I kind of hate her.

She's just...well, she tries to make a point that she's not just the spoiled little rich girl that everyone assumes her to be; except that that's exactly what she IS, and nothing else about her stands out except her random horniness for the hero. She "rebels" against her father by doing drugs and sex and whatnot, but that's not at all different from what real spoiled rich kids do, seriously. Can't FOR ONCE a "not spoiled rich kid" just go against their parents by, I dunno, becoming an archeologist when their parents would've preferred a lawyer or something? Why do down the "ruin my life through drugs and sleeping around" bit, seriously? It's just annoying and not to mention typical.

Also, from Sloane's perspective, the romance legit makes ZERO sense. Okay, maybe I can buy that the whole fated mate thing makes her horny; I get that. BUT, to go as far as to say that she loves the hero and would follow him into death after just legit a few days of knowing him (and without his translator, I might add, as he had to break it earlier to create fire for them, so while he can understand her perfectly, she can't understand anything about him) is just...lazy. Like the author couldn't be bothered to come up with actual character development and therefore an actual romance, so she just stenciled one in and didn't bother to see if the edges were well inked.

Meh, you get what you put into it, I guess, and in this case it's subpar.

All in all and other than that though...yeah and MEH, that's about it. *shrugs* All I can say is that if anyone's looking for a GREAT spider-human romance, check out Ensnared instead--a 100000000% better, trust me.

Guarded by the Spider is the fourth book in the Monster Security Agency series and features Nia’n’an (Nine) and Sloan. The Monster Security Agency is an elite bodyguard service and Nine, set on dying because he hasn't found his mate, takes a risky rescue mission.

When Nine stumbles upon Sloan to save her, he realizes she's his mate but his translator is broken and Sloan doesn't speak spider. The two of them have to get out of danger while also fighting the chemistry brewing between them.

I love Nine. He was such a giant teddy bear and he just wanted to worship the ground his mate walked on. He wanted to spin her in his web and keep her. Sloan was a total asshole through about 60% of the story. She was judgmental and mean. She didn't deserve Nine. However, toward the end she did get her head out of her ass and I liked her a little bit more. Nine was just everything.

This story was action packed and spicy in a deliciously kinky spidery way. I liked it.

“I love you, Sloane Marlow. You will be my mate, and an Arachnaea mates for life. There is no other person in the world for me but you. You will always have my heart, and I will always be your protector. From here on out, everything about me is yours. So please trust that whatever is waiting out there for you, you will not be facing it alone. I will be at your side forevermore.”

I received a copy of this ARC to read and listen, I am leaving this review voluntarily.

First, let me preface with saying, I do not like spiders. At all. They make me pukey and give me the heebie jeebies. HOWEVER. I LOVED this book. "Nine" and Sloane are honestly perfect for each other and I could not get enough.

"Nine" is what most of the characters in the book call Nia'n'an throughout the book, he is the spider type humanoid-ish monster. He is dying because he has not found his mate. So he is sent on a mission to rescue a billionaire's daughter who has been kidnapped. He is sent by himself, since he is dying, so as to not put any of the other team at risk for an impossible mission. They are unsure if they are bringing out Sloane alive, or as a corpse.

Sloane is probably one of my favorite FMC's to date. She is such a strong character. She was kidnapped at her concert after it was shot up and people died. She was underground for over a month, caged like an animal, by her captors. She is taken by Nine who she can't communicate effectively with because his translator broke. She falls in love with him quickly and does not understand its because they are fated mates. She is terrified of him, and then turned on by him. She is incredibly funny with her comments she makes, often thinking he does not understand her.

The majority of the story goes back and forth between the two of them and their self monologue. Nine definitely has those touch her and d!e vibes. I also like that he has his own organic, all natural, self made shibari rope because he just trusses Sloane right on up wherever he can make her stick. He also uses it to hold her in place during the few spicy scenes they have. There are only a couple of spicy scenes, but boy are they spicy. They each have their own self spicy scenes, Sloane can't stop with the self pleasure because she does not know or understand it is her body's reaction to being by her mate.

I do wish the book went on a little bit longer. Towards the end they are trying to conceive a baby and it would just be nice to know if the vial provided by Sloane's father actually helped them produce a child, and what that child might be like. Nine is really great with other people's kids, and I love the way he responded to her when she was upset thinking she was infertile. That entire scene had me cracking up, he was very nonchalant with his "sacs" of his baby making juice and hiding them LOL.

The narrators were *chef's kiss*. They were very EXPRESSIVE in their scenes. The spicy scenes made you feel like you were a fly on the wall or apart of it. The duet worked really well together. I will be looking for more of their works in the future. It is Avery Caris and Jonathan Lake.

OHHHHH MYYYYYY LANTAAAAAAAA 🔥

Like WHAT! This story has me wanting my own freaking hot spider now 😂😂😂

Like I am NOT. A fan of spiders. No. Nope. HECK TO THE NOPE.

But Nine??? HOOK.ME.UP!!!!

Mind you. He’s half spider (bottom😏)- Half man (top)

He’s like a cinnamon roll, but touch her a d!e type of alpha spider.

No joke.

He has waited for his mate, and had finally given up hope.

Then turn of events has him on a mission to rescue a human girl, and plot twist. The human girl IS HIS MATE.

Sloane is HILARIOUS. Despite her situation, she’s bold, and says what she’s thinking (even if she thinks the spider-man can’t understand her) which also. Was HILARIOUS.

Nine was so cute and protective of her! Almost gentlemanly with his words and how he wanted to care for her. Like never thought I be swooning over a spider. But here we are.

Did I mention the two 🍆🍆? No? Okay then, YES I SAID TWO!!!!!!! and a wide 👅…….

Also. 🕸️. AS. BONDAGE. 👀😏

I am all about the spider romance now.

Another great read by an incredible author!🖤🕷️🖤

Oh My Spider

First off; I am terrified of spiders and small enclosed spaces 😂. But in books, I figured they won't seem so scary to me. So this was my first Spider romance. But I've read multiple books by this author, and I've enjoyed all of them and I knew this wouldn't be any different.

Half Spider/Half Human x Human female
Kidnapped and Rescued
Caves and Tight Spaces
Language Barrier
Virgin Male x Experienced Female
Breeding Kink (no pregnancy in story)
DVP
DP
Multiple Peens 🍆🍆
Fancy Peens 🍆
Lots and Lots of Spice 🌶🌶🌶🌶
Little bit of BDSM
Cinnamon Roll for his female
Touch her and die 💀

I loved Nia'n'an so much. He was so dang adorable but badass at the same time. I loved meeting Sloane and Nia'n'an. The time they spent alone trying to get away from her captors! Sloane and her little antics when she thinks he can't understand her were hilarious 🤣 I would honestly probably react the same way she did in that situation.

And don't get me started on the spice! Those scenes could definitely be one-handed reads 🥵🥵 and their chemistry when they finally could interact was off the charts.

Nia'n'an was so sweet! All the stuff he was telling Sloane was everything you could want in a book boyfriend 🫠🫠🫠

Thank you to the author for a chance to ARC read this.

Do I like spiders? No. Did I love this book? Absolutely!

Nia’n’an works for a monster security agency but is holed up in his apartment waiting to die due to being unmated when there’s a knock on his door and he’s given the mission to rescue a billionaires daughter who was kidnapped. While he’s on the mission he smells his mate and has to follow the scent, much to his surprise it leads him right to Sloane. Nia’n’an ends up having to use his translator to start a fire so Sloane can’t understand anything he says. Although there’s a language barrier between them they can’t help but grow close as Nia’n’an works hard on getting them out of the mountain Sloane’s captors had hidden her away in.

Nia’n’an was so sweet, such a cute cinnamon roll. I really enjoyed the way he worded and explained things. Like the way he pointed out that he could see why Sloane was attractive although they’re different species. And although he’s a cinnamon roll he’s very protective and will do whatever it takes to keep Sloane safe.

If you enjoy monster romance and ever wondered what it would be like to be strung up and ✨serviced✨ check this book out! 😏

You know, when the miscommunication trope appeared I became unsure about this one, but I just tried to trust the process & was so happy to see that it led to a very well-matched couple.

I loved how my initial reaction to each mc was flipped on its head, & that though they at first seemed like an unlikely pair, they ended up being such a good fit for the other. Just pure, playful love & lust between the two.

Monster lovers unite! This steamy, action-packed, spider-mate romance is off the charts! I LOVED every single web-slinging, spidery moment . . . and I'm not a spider lover. FANTASTIC book, well-written, sweet and spicy combo. Pick it up and read! You won't regret it.

Dnf at 120 pages.

This book was bad. It was very low effort, and surely written for the sake of tacking it on to a series. There’s no way I’m finishing it, since there’s no way it can make up for the quality from the first 100 pages.
