When you've just had a new baby it seems everyone around you suddenly becomes an expert - particularly when it comes to how to feed your newborn. It's an emotional time for new parents when female hormonal balance is skewed, sleep hard to come by and struggling with the pros and cons of how to feed your baby can have a profoundly negative impact on a mother's mental health and sense of self-worth. Here's where Olivia Hinge steps in with her no-judgement, evidence-based guide to help you make the right choices for you and your baby based on fact and not lack of support or misinformation.
There's no wrong or right when it comes to feeding - it's what works for you and your baby, and this handy resource with chapters on feeding cues, length and frequency of feeds, positioning and attachment for breastfeeding, how to supplement if needed, pumping, bottle feeding and teat size, mixed feeding pros and cons, plus a truly comprehensive section dealing with challenges, all delivered in Olivia's imitable style, will make it a popular reference for all new parents.
Really great book, I blitzed through it. Great to finally read a book that doesn’t feel too pushy or judgy. Great resource that I will no doubt be turning to time and time again over the next 12 months!
I would highly recommend this book to expecting mums & also follow Olivia on instagram! She’s so knowledgeable in this area and clearly loves helping other women.
For me personally, Olivia’s advice has been key to my breastfeeding success with my first born. I didn’t breastfeed until he was 3wks old (for different reasons) but by educating myself more I became more confident and just went all in. Even when I start to doubt myself sometimes, Olivia’s posts that she makes on IG are incredibly reassuring and encourages me to keep going.
One of the things that has stuck with me and reinforced throughout the book is how natural and instinctive BF is. It really puts my mind at ease knowing that my body knows what it’s doing and reacts to my babies needs. 🫶🏼
I have been following Olivia on instagram for a while and her videos are the main reason I was able to successful bf my first child, but I’m so glad she’s written a whole book on the subject - I found really useful ahead of having my second child and but this for all my friends who are expecting.
Engaging read, easy to understand language and clearly evidenced based. I found the chapter size to be manageable and the subheadings very useful.
I really enjoyed the additional of diagrams and tables and I screenshotted them all for my notes.
Although I’ve not given birth yet so cannot put this new knowledge into practice, I feel it was informative, interesting and user-friendly. I feel well-prepared now and have been able to pre-manage my expectations, too.
Would highly recommend this book to any new mums or expectant parents. The information is given in a non-judgemental, research driven way and validates anyone going through struggles with feeding throughout.
Olivia Hinge is an incredibly knowledgable midwife and lactation consultant and this book is a much needed and extraordinarily valuable resource to new parents and medical professionals on infant feeding.
A clear and detailed, supportive guide to feeding your baby that I so wish I’d had when breastfeeding my first baby. Highly recommend to any new parent.
Very clear, reassuring and detailed - but more so if you’re breastfeeding than bottle. Overall, most of the content was very heavily focussed on breastfeeding rather than “boob, bottle, and all”.
This book was one of my best friends in the first few months post partum. At a time when you know so little about feeding a baby and managing all the other things that come with being a mother, this book was absolutely what I needed. An easy read which is not judgemental, sticks to the facts and not only focuses on breastfeeding but also other types of feeding. Felt informed and supported. I thought it was so good that I have recommended it to friends, my midwife and my lactation consultant!
