This was a very fun followup to Holly Horror and a great option if you're looking for campy horror that's creepy but not all that scary. This time with a holiday theme a la A Christmas Carol! I didn't love this installment quite as much as the first one which was more a haunted house story, I still enjoyed it. We're back with Evie and her friends as they face a dark enemy, and she tries to come to terms with her feelings about her dad since her parents divorce. It feels very YA and very fun. If you liked the first book I would recommend trying this one too! It's a satisfying conclusion to the loose ends left in book 1. I received a copy of this book for review via Netgalley, all opinions are my own.

A strong continuation of the Holly Horror world, The Longest Night delivers the conclusion to Desmond’s disappearance while introducing a chilling new mystery. Evie knows Desmond is alive and trapped with the Patchwork Girl, but the rest of the town has accepted that he’s never coming back. As those around her mourn, Evie and her friends must push forward, determined to unlock her ability to reach the Patchwork Girl—who is now slipping further from her grasp and eluding her previous ability to takl to her.

MJC's writing is highly accessible, keeping the plot moving at a great pace. She crafts horror in a way that keeps you on the edge of your seat, making the characters’ tension feel palpable.

I love the eerie, immersive world she’s created and can’t wait to dive into her backlist.

Thank you to the publisher for a advanced readers copy of this book.

I REALLY enjoyed the first Holly Horror book. It had small colonial autumnal town with Gilmore Girls vibes but spooky. The vibes were so nice and perfect for an autumn and small town horror lover like me, and I knew that I was going to pick up the next installment right after finishing the first book about a year ago. And the moment is finally here! Holly Horror 2 bringing another much appreciated dose of autumn/Halloween vibes during the summer!

So the downside to reading a sequel so far in the future is forgetting the details. I had little memory of the final showdown in book one, aside from a generic recollection without specific details. But luckily, the first few pages do give a very brief recount, which was much needed. Basically, Holly had gone missing when searching for Sarah (the patchwork girl) and they were now lost in the Shadow Land that could be accessed through the mine, where Evie’s (now missing) friend Desmond was stuck in too. And Sarah, Holly, and Desmond are not the only ones in this dark land. The book starts with Evie determined to find out what other entity residing in this dark place had taken Desmond, and how to get him out. Evie dives deep into research, hoping that the answers lie somewhere in Holly’s research about Sarah’s disappearance. But before long, she is thrown into yet another supernatural adventure and has bigger problems to worry about. And this one is even creepier.

Before I had even reached page 30, I immediately got the giddy autumn small town horror feelings again that I got from the first book. All these cute small town details I had forgotten, like Evie’s mom working at a cute local inn (just like Gilmore Girls!) but with a creepy twist of course. The whole thing just gives off such a Hocus Pocus energy. I don’t recall the first book being particularly scary, just cozy and autumnal in vibe. But this one was actually scary! Far scarier than the first book which is a huge plus! This was a much darker and scarier installment. I really love these books and that hope there’s another, though I would feel bad for the characters if there’s another installment because I feel like they’ve been through enough at this point!

I have no critiques and can’t think of any way this book could’ve been any better, so a rarely given 5/5 stars! Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin for sending me an advanced copy in return for my honest review.

Note: This is not the fault of the book but I must complain about this again because I VEHEMENTLY dislike reading out of the Netgalley app rather than kindle. It is MUCH harder to see the text and it is a much more difficult reading experience, though this file was much more tolerable than the other arc I’d been forced to read on the Netgalley app (the bar was not very high though). There is smaller, harder to read text with no option provided by Netgalley to enlarge the text. Penguin, for the sake of other arc readers, please allow them to import this arc into kindle. This was not a pleasant arc reading experience without that.

The sequel didn't live up to the first book, but that seems to always be the case. This book was too long, and seemed to be full of fluff.

What a creepy sequel! This was a perfect read for October, there are vengeful ghosts and town curses, plus some scary visions that gave me goosebumps. The pacing is quick and I appreciated getting a couple new characters to interact with.

The only thing I didn't like was the love triangle that developed. They never work out well and I think this would have been better without the extra romance angle.

I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All opinions are my own. Thank you to Penguin Workshop and NetGalley for the copy.

Thanks to PRH Audio for the copy, all thoughts are my own.

I dove right into this one immediately after finishing the first. This continuation was just as good, if not better than the first. The plot expanded, more characters were added and it really dug down into the cause of the happenings in this town. There were moments that had me wanting to bash my head on the wall because the main characters weren’t making the connections right away, but there were also surprisingly deep moments. #noregrets Overall a good listen, I definitely recommend following up the first book with this one.

Evie’s house feels friendly now, but Desmond is gone. He chased after her into the Shadowland and didn’t make it back out. Everyone else thinks he’s dead but she knows better. All of her waking moments go to trying to figure out how to save him. But Holly is silent. Until she literally runs into a boy. Well, he almost runs her over with a motorcycle, but still. The moment they touch she gets a vision, one he sees as well. He is clearly a key to unlock what’s happening, but how? Besides, he starts avoiding her like the plague after seeing that, not that she could blame him. But when you are battling something not of this world, tracking down a teenage boy is nothing.

This is not the book for me. This is not the series for me.

This series is for fans of YA literature.

The plot checks all the boxes on the traditional YA list:

Plucky teen girl who's different from all the others? Check.
Popular kid who is attracted to the Plucky Teen for no apparent reason? Check.
Other, slightly edgier kid who is also attracted to the Plucky Teen, thus creating a love triangle Check.
A bitter ex of the popular kid, who happens to be the child of someone in authority? Check.
Inattentive and slightly incompetent parents? Check.
A backstory that introduces historic Plucky Teens and the tragic ends of their love triangles? Check.
Junk-science, AKA: vibes/ energy, "thin places," tarot, psychics, and other thoroughly disproved garbage? Check.
A sulky sibling? Check.
Family drama involving separation or divorce of the parents, for which the Plucky Teen blames themselves? Check.
A black sheep member of the family who serves as a mentor to the Plucky Teen and her junk-science abilities? Check.

The list goes on, but you get the idea.

This will be an excellent read for the right person. I'm not that guy.

Holly Horror: The Longest Night was a fun sequel. I wasn't a huge fan of the triangle part but I did think the wrap up of loose ends and overall closure was done really well. The atmosphere was more sinister compared to the creepy vibe of the first one. It played well with the turn this one took.

Both audiobooks are read by Bailey Carr. She is phenomenal y'all! Not only does she sing the creepy little tunes with ghostly pizzaz but her dead girl and demon voices are excellent. She literally brought the book to audio life.

True rating 3.5/5.

A fun continuation of the story. It would be ok to stop here, but I'm guessing (even hoping) it continues. This would be fun to read anytime between Halloween and Christmastime. The subtitle refers to Winter Solstice, and the Christmas Carol allusions were appreciated. The little love triangle added another depth to this story too.

I was so excited to jump back into this scary world. I love the creepiness of it all. The town says Desmond is gone but Evie just won't accept that. When her connection to Holly is severed she has to find help from somewhere or someone else. Something sinister begins taking the townspeople only to return them changed. They are mean and nothing like themselves. It is up to Evie to save the town and hopefully Desmond too. The story was so good and pulled me in from the start. I did not want to put it down. The twists were great and had me guessing. I just loved the book. Thank you prh audio and penguin teen for sending me a free copy and the audiobook.

I found myself gasping and asking if it was a teen horror multiple times. 😂 I was so creeped out at several points. This was an audio that I could only listen to in the daytime.

I think this added to the first book. It felt like a good conclusion to the ending of book 1.

The narrator was amazing. The scary voices she did had me on edge. Also the creepy singing parts were soooo scary. This was so well done.

Thank you Netgalley and Penguin Group for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

"Holly Horror: The Longest Night" by Michelle Jabès Corpora is a horror sequel (I believe the end of the duology) that not only lives up to the atmospheric charm of the first book but surpasses it in terms of horror and suspense. Set in the quaint, autumnal town of Ravenglass, this book is perfect for those who relish small-town horror, especially if you’re someone that doesn’t really like gore (this book mainly focuses on ghosts/possessions).

Picking up where the first book left off, the story follows Evie Archer as she delves deeper into the dark mysteries surrounding the disappearance of her friend Desmond. The story thrusts Evie into a relentless pursuit to uncover the truth about the sinister entity lurking in the Shadow Land. Having forgotten some details of the first book, I appreciated the brief recount in the initial pages, which set the stage for this sequel without feeling lost. The book revolves around Evie with reoccurring characters from the previous book like her friend Tina, and there is also a new character named Sai.

The book effortlessly recaptures the enchanting yet eerie atmosphere of the first installment. I I actually found this book to be genuinely scarier than the previous one, a testament to Corpora's ability to elevate the horror elements while maintaining the series' unique charm. I especially liked these interspersed horror chapters that involved various people throughout the town. There was one towards the beginning involving a little kid that was actually pretty creepy.

In this sequel, Evie is more determined than ever, grappling with guilt over Desmond's disappearance and the looming threat over Ravenglass. Evie's quest to reconnect with Holly and decipher her clues is intense and gripping, aided by her friend Tina and the enigmatic newcomer, Sai. I liked how this book fleshed out Tina more by focusing on her background and family, but I wish she had more of a role in this book. It just seemed like she was forgotten at times. Evie’s father is also more prominent in this book as there is more of a focus on Evie’s family drama, which allows for some more character development of Evie. There was a bit of an unexpected love triangle with Sai, especially since Desmond is missing throughout the book. While I liked Sai’s character, he was a bit stereotypical.

The New England town setting in the fall/winter is what really sets this book apart from other horror books. The atmospheric setting (who knew that Christmas caroling could be so creepy?) creates the perfect backdrop for this chilling tale, enhancing the overall tone and immersion. The progression of the plot keeps you on edge, with twists and revelations that are both shocking and satisfying. The nostalgic references and horror elements (I was not expecting such a focus on The Christmas Carol) combine seamlessly, making this a compelling read for both young adults and adults who enjoy a good scare.

Overall, "Holly Horror: The Longest Night" is an excellent sequel that I definitely enjoyed. It's a great choice for fans of YA thrillers and anyone looking to get lost in a spooky, small-town mystery.

The atmosphere of this book makes it a perfect choice for a spooky season read – just like the first book. I enjoyed the continued mentions of one of my all-time favorite books, Alice in Wonderland, and the addition of A Christmas Carol. It’s not usually seen in a dark setting or book, but when you stop to think about it – it is. The identity of the sinister being was fairly easy to figure out, and I think it could have been written a little bit darker. One tidbit that I found weird was Desmond’s mom and Rocky – it seemed that no one noticed them after their incident even though it was a significant one they didn’t resurface in the story.

"Alice finds the door to the Queen’s Garden, but she’s too large to fit through it. She goes through one transformation after another — nearly drowning in her own tears — before she finally gets where she wants to go.

"… 'When I was a psychiatrist, I used it to remind my patients that in order to reach our destination, we must often change in ways we don’t think possible. Like Alice, we must be elastic with our sense of self, enough to allow room for the idea of being — not someone else — but a version of us we never even knew was there.'"

Throughout the first book and into this one Evie’s relationship with her dad is incredibly strained – mainly because he is the one that left. Their reconciliation was well done – more of an explanation and working towards doing better together, making it feel real. I was shocked about Evie’s mom’s revelation at the close of the last book and I have more issues with that than anything her father did. She KNEW and agreed to send Evie off to therapy hoping that they would be able to help her. The situation of her mother being in denial about Evie was realistic – how Evie acted after finding out, not so much. Evie finds herself in a triangle that reminds me of Riverdale’s Betty. On one side is Desmond, the golden boy like Archie while on the other we have dark, stormy & motorcycle-loving Sai, like Jughead. Such a good triangle and I usually loathe them – I’m always a sucker for the bad boy. Team Sai all the way.

The Longest Night was a solid follow-up to Holly Horror and I thoroughly enjoyed the spooky spin on Christmas. If you’re searching for some delightfully spooky books that take place over Halloween and on into Christmas I highly recommend checking out Holly Horror and Holly Horror: The Longest Night – they need to be read in order. As always, a big thank you to Penguin Teen for the opportunity to read a gifted copy. Rounded from 4.5 stars.

After reading the wild ride that was Holly Horror I was beyond excited when I saw that there was going to be a sequel.

I had to know what happened to Desmond, because being left with a cliffhanger was KILLING 💀 me.

But this installment left me with very few questions like last time. Last time I had sooo many questions ⁉️ and not enough to go off of. So much teenage romance 😍 and everything was left in an unbalance. But not this time.

I was so glad when I started reading this and it was like picking back up where I left off. I loved seeing Tina back in her role of resident bestie and sidekick extraordinare. I really enjoyed seeing Sai as a new character and also a new love interest. Love triangle anyone? ❤️❤️❤️

This book was so full of action, questions and definitely ghosts from the past that helped explore so much from the towns past. Evie not only had the task of being back Desmond but also figuring out what was happening to so many people in town.

Luckily Holly was able to help her along the way. I loved being able to see more of the more humanized side of Holly in this book instead of the other side we saw in the last book. It also explained so much about her from the last book. There was sooo much explained in this book about the towns past, along with Holly and others that had been trapped down below for so long.

This book definitely could be made into a movie that's for sure. As I was reading it was being played out as one in my head. There were scenes that I'm sure have been in movies but nothing that could have been to this degree. This book really took it to a degree that I have never seen in a YA Horror before.

I couldn't get enough of this book and that is all thanks to Michelle and her writing. I am now a Michelle STAN.

This is the perfect finale of the Holly Horror series! A bit creepier and definitely darker than the first book, we are transported again to the little town of Ravenglass.
Picking up pretty close after the first book ends (definitely read that one first) Evie and Stan have made it out of the mines and the shadowland but Desmond is still stuck inside. Evie can feel that he's still alive and as the days turn to weeks, turn into months Evie is doing everything she can to figure out the clues Holly left behind and get back to the shadowland and save Desmond. She has her friend Tina on her side and has recruited Sai, who has demons of his own that make him uniquely qualified to help Evie in her search.

I loved the vibes, it was creepy and the story progressively gets more tense as the darkness grows. Evie is an amazing main character, we see her from every side: her struggles, and her willingness to keep growing even when she's hit a dead end. Sai is a heartthrob with a tortured past that made me want to give him a big ol hug, and while in the first book, I thought Desmond was the dude for Evie, as we got to know Sai more and more, and time passed with Desmond still stuck I was definitely rooting for those two to get together. (must be that British accent, and that motorcycle...)

I thought the pacing was perfect with a steady build to the end, which had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see how everyone would survive. This book was perfect for me from beginning to end, and if you would rather listen than read the audiobook was also amazing. Baily Carr did such a great job bringing the characters and the story to life!

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Michelle Jabes Corpora for providing me with a complimentary digital ARC for Holly Horror: The Longest Night #2 coming out August 13, 2024. The honest opinions expressed in this review are my own.

It's been two weeks since Evie escaped the mines after solving the mystery of Holly's disappearance only to discover that Desmond followed her but never came back. Evie knows he’s alive, lost wherever the Patchwork Girl resides. When Evie tries to reach out to Holly again for help, she realizes that her connection to the Lost Girl—and the shadow world itself—has been severed. Desmond is gone, and it’s all her fault.

Ravenglass slowly begins to move on from the tragedy of losing Desmond, but as winter creeps closer and the days grow shorter, a sinister being begins to threaten the lives of Ravenglass residents, stealing them away and bringing them back different. Wrong.

Evie knows that the only way to stop it is to connect to Holly again. With the help of her friend Tina, and the troubled newcomer Sai, Evie begins to follow the clues Holly left behind, determined to find the Lost Girl once more, at any cost.

I absolutely adored the first book, so I was so excited to receive this book! Ravenglass is a perfect spooky small town with a lot of weird stuff going on. I’m really into horror books set around Christmastime, so this was a really fun book for me. I loved it! I love Evie’s character and I think she goes through a lot in this book because of the events of the first book. I thought Sai was a fun new character. I loved that he helped Evie figure out what was going on. The ending felt a little open, so hopefully there will be another book in the series!

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading spooky YA books!

Evie is back with a vengeance, ready to take on the paranormal forces that have haunted her town. Two weeks after her terrifying encounter with the ghosts of Holly and Sarah, Desmond has vanished while investigating the tunnels with Evie. Now, Evie must track down Desmond and confront an even darker evil that threatens to destroy the entire town, forcing her to join forces with Holly and Sarah in a desperate bid to save everything.

I had a feeling the sequel to ‘Holly Horror’ would surpass the first in terms of thrills and chills, and I was right. Delving into Sarah’s backstory and uncovering the truth about her ghostly presence in the dark tunnels alongside Holly was a masterstroke. This installment boasted a far more intense narrative that kept me perched on the edge of my seat.

The supporting cast, including Sai, a rebellious boy with a near-death experience that granted him visions like Evie’s, Tina, Evie’s loyal best friend, and Evie’s dad, add a delightful depth to the story. I’m not usually a fan of love triangles, but this one had me hooked, with both Sai and Desmond being genuinely great guys. Still, Evie was the true star of the show, proving herself to be a total badass.

‘Holly Horror: The Longest Night’ was a captivating, spine-tingling, and emotionally resonant read. The characters were well-developed and the villain was chilling. It embodied the essence of a modern gothic tale, leaving me craving more. I’m eagerly hoping for a third installment and another dose of these spooky characters!

This was a really fun sequel. Holly Horror The Longest Night starts out 2 weeks after the events of the first book. Desmond is still missing and presumed dead and the town is reeling from it. Evie must dive deeper into the mystery surrounding the town of Ravenglass and what dark forces are threatening the lives of the residents and bringing them back different and wrong. I really enjoyed the mystery aspects where Evie, Tina and their new friend Sai had to uncover the secrets of their small town. I think this book definitely felt much creepier than the first one. The disappearances and odd behavior of the citizens added a layer of suspense. I also liked how this story dealt with grief/ loss of a loved one and family dynamics such as divorce and parental separation. The romance in this story was much less than in the previous book because for most of the book the characters are looking for Desmond. The new character Sai was a fun addition and appreciated how he and Holly both were able to lean on each other while they were healing from loss. I also really enjoyed the relationship between Evie and Tina. I always appreciate a great female friendship. Overall this was a fun spooky sequel. I think this will be a perfect fall read and definitely recommend this duo.

I really liked the first book in this series. The narrator, Bailey Carr, is absolutely fantastic and I was excited to see that she was also the narrator for this one.

“In this terrifying sequel, Evie Archer and her friends face a new evil ready to devour their town whole.”

We are back with Evie Archer et al. two weeks later. Desmond is gone and Evie feels like it’s all her fault. She knows he must still be alive in the place wherever the Patchwork Girl resides. Evie has lost her connection to the shadow world but works hard to try and find him. With the help of Tina and a new friend, Sal, Evie reaches out to Holly and follows clues to help hoping it’s not too late.

Overall I thought this was a fun YA horror read. Considering it’s only been two weeks there was a part of the story I just didn’t care for but I won’t say too much so as to spoil it for anyone. I did enjoy being back with Evie and joining her on this new adventure and love this world that the author has created. Will there be a book 3? I do hope so!

*I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review*

The second book in the Holly Horror duology, that follows Evie as she continues to uncover the history of the haunted Hobbie house.

I liked the first book, and thought this was a good conclusion to the story. This takes place 2 weeks after the first book ends. The first few pages give a brief recap of the first book, which was helpful as I hadn't remembered some details. I loved the setting of Ravenglass, it was a little town with a lot of spooky things we got to learn about. I also liked that this took place around Christmas time, there's just something about a spooky Christmas book that hits different. I wasn't the biggest fan of the love triangle, and would rather it had been left out. I did really enjoy the friendship between Tina and Evie though!

This is a great book to read in the fall!

Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Young Readers for sending me a copy of this book! All opinions are my own!

There are sequels that don't live up to their original, and then there are sequels that meet every single expectation and then some. And this book certainly raised the bar for sequels everywhere! I love the way this book tied into the first one and the ease with which the story flowed. All too often, horror/mystery sequels can feel disjointed because they're a new "case" or "mystery," but this one flows so well into the next piece of the story, it never once faltered.

The character development in this book was definitely the best part of it. There was so much learning that was done, and not just for Evie but for nearly everyone that she interacts with. The way that Evie discovers herself and her own strength in this book is truly inspirational.

This series is one that stands out in YA horror/mystery for being a head above the rest, and I know you won't want to miss them!

What a messed up, over thought out, and most extremely stupid 'sequel' to a GREAT and creepy fist book! WTH was this mess!?

After having just listened to the first book 'Holly Horror' and LOVING IT, I thought that this was going to be just as good.....I was SO SO wrong! This was just a ridiculously stupid, and such a dumb story, that it was like the author took everything that worked SO well in the first one......and added 20 more non relatable storylines, put them all in a almost broken blender then poured them in a glass that had a crack in it! LOL.....yes, this was THAT bad of a story. The creep factor that was so perfectly written about in the first novel; a 70's child's toy; the Holly Hobbie doll that was actually being haunted by a ghost and set in the best of haunted houses, just takes a flying LEAP into the mine, by 'slide down my rain barrel.........etc' and drowns in the worst smelling dog feces ever! Cannot recommend this horrible and so called sequel that was just a MESS!!! Stick with the first one only and skip this!
1.5 so what's!

Thank you to Penguin Teen for an e-arc of this book!

I very much enjoyed the first book, and the ending left me wanting more, so I was thrilled when I was given the chance to review this book.

This book was just as creepy as the first book, and the atmosphere was just so on point. It had the spooky autumnal vibes that I absolutely adore.

The writing was just fabulous in this book, it kept me engaged all the way through. It carries the mystery from the first book into this one, but it also introduces new characters.

I did enjoy the new character, Sai, in this book. Evie was still such a great protagonist in this one!

This book was an enjoyment to read, and anyone who loves spooky, scary stories with ghosts, and other horror things will enjoy this book! I really enjoyed the plot of the book and I got invested!

Another great book, and I'm thrilled I got the chance to read a review copy!

This is the second book in the Holly Horror series. I definitely recommend reading the first book before grabbing this one! Though I really enjoyed this book, I didn’t love it quite as much as the first book. The author did a great job transitioning from book one into book two. The continuation with Evie and her friends was perfect. Book two definitely answered some questions left over from the first book.

I thought the author did a great job making this book feel very atmospheric, everything from the creepy house to the unsettling characters with their mouths sewn shut. The perfect mix of horror, mystery, and spooky vibes.

I’m interested to see if there is another book in this series because the ending left a few things unanswered. It also felt a bit rushed, but still enjoyable. Overall, a fun YA series that I recommend to readers who enjoy atmospheric novels with spooky vibes and small town drama!

Book 2 in the Holly Horror YA horror series by @michellejcorpora

It’s been two weeks since Evie escaped the mines only to find out her boyfriend, Desmond, went in after her and hasn’t been seen since. Evie feels that he is alive and is trying to contact the Patchwork Girl again, but her connection to the other world is no longer. As winter comes, the town residents of Ravenglass seem to be acting differently, very zombie-like. Soon it seems like she might be the only one left to save the town so she reaches out to Holly again in an effort to find Desmond and save her new home.

What a great follow up to book 1! I loved Sai’s character and want more of him if there is a third novel. This paranormal title releases a few weeks ago and both are perfect for upcoming spooky season.

3.5/5. I liked the first book more but this one is still a good book it just had a massive pet peeve. So after the last book things we knew, more or less, what a goal for this book was going to be. Not really surprising as Evie did get into a bit of trouble near the end of the last book. It was nice that Evie got involved more with the town that she moved to and getting to know other characters instead of turning into a super ultra obsessive Nancy Drew mystery girlie. I was a bit alarmed that was going to be the case as a lot of characters in middle grade/young adult books go that route. The book takes some unexpected plot twists along the way and one of those plot twists is a personal pet peeve and the main reason why I won't be rating this a 4 star: a love triangle. Between Twilight and Stephanie Plum books I'm totally tired of this literary device and the madness needs to stop. I'm unsure if there will be another Holly Horror book but if there is I will want read it.

The sequel to Holly Horror, a YA haunted house story, this follows Evie as she continues to uncover the history of Hobbie House and its ghosts.

Like the first book, this book has such a fun and cheesy (in the best way) vibe, but with so many moments of genuinely expertly crafted horror. The imagery is terrifying, and there are moments from this book that are sticking with me the same way the scariest scenes of a horror movie do. The plot in this one was not quite as compelling as the first book for me, but it gives some much needed closure, and overall I was happy to have a sequel to such a fun horror book.

Thanks Penguin Teen for the ARC!
