A grandfather imparts a tale of courage and adventure to his granddaughter featuring Morpheus, Lucien and the Dreaming! But what he reveals at the end of the tale is the real shocker!
A compelling, well-told story in the manner that we have come to expect and love of Gaiman. It is easy to find the characters involved likeable and real, human despite their very exceptional nature. I particularly loved the ending, a fun, exciting revelation.
Was initially torn between a 4 or 5, but in the end the story made sense and ended up being memorable. The illustrations were gorgeous too, one of Sandman’s best in my humble opinion.
I didn't know what to expect from this - it's the only Sandman story I've ever read. (I was curious to see the context for that bit about a small bone carved into the shape of a small bone.)
Overall, it's a slight story and a very quick read, but fun. Perfect on my tablet in 'guided reading' mode, jumping from frame to frame.
In the Audible Original audio experience, Fables and Reflections actually comes before A Game of You (and also intertwined with Distant Mirrors). To be honest, this is a 3.5 for me. With such a harsh detour from the (main) characters and plot lines, I cannot recall a single thing that happened in this episode. Very dry but still happy to be in the universe overall. Happy to be done with this segment!
"No, it is the book I'm interested in. What's your price?" "Her."
Such a great story about why some wishes are better left not granted, and why marrying "outside" the family / faith / clan will always have consequences.
"A small bone that he had what?" "Carved into the shape of a small bone." "But it was a small bone already." "He carved it into the shape of a different small bone. All right?"
A fairy tale of the East European tradition concerning a young man of 'The People' (werewolves) who comes to possess a portrait of a beautiful princess.
